Epic Systems, a lethal health record monopolist
Epic Systems makes the dominant electronic health record (EHR) system in America; if you're a doctor, chances are you are required to use it, and for every hour a doctor spends with a patient, they have to spend two hours doing clinically useless bureaucratic data-entry on an Epic EHR.
How could a product so manifestly unfit for purpose be the absolute market leader? Simple: as Robert Kuttner describes in an excellent feature in The American Prospect, Epic may be a clinical disaster, but it's a profit-generating miracle:
https://prospect.org/health/2024-10-01-epic-dystopia/
At the core of Epic's value proposition is "upcoding," a form of billing fraud that is beloved of hospital administrators, including the "nonprofit" hospitals that generate vast fortunes that are somehow not characterized as profits. Here's a particularly egregious form of upcoding: back in 2020, the Poudre Valley Hospital in Ft Collins, CO locked all its doors except the ER entrance. Every patient entering the hospital, including those receiving absolutely routine care, was therefore processed as an "emergency."
In April 2020, Caitlin Wells Salerno – a pregnant biologist – drove to Poudre Valley with normal labor pains. She walked herself up to obstetrics, declining the offer of a wheelchair, stopping only to snap a cheeky selfie. Nevertheless, the hospital recorded her normal, uncomplicated birth as a Level 5 emergency – comparable to a major heart-attack – and whacked her with a $2755 bill for emergency care:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/10/27/crossing-a-line/#zero-fucks-given
Upcoding has its origins in the Reagan revolution, when the market-worshipping cultists he'd put in charge of health care created the "Prospective Payment System," which paid a lump sum for care. The idea was to incentivize hospitals to provide efficient care, since they could keep the difference between whatever they spent getting you better and the set PPS amount that Medicare would reimburse them. Hospitals responded by inventing upcoding: a patient with controlled, long-term coronary disease who showed up with a broken leg would get coded for the coronary condition and the cast, and the hospital would pocket both lump sums:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/06/13/a-punch-in-the-guts/#hayek-pilled
The reason hospital administrators love Epic, and pay gigantic sums for systemwide software licenses, is directly connected to the two hours that doctors spent filling in Epic forms for every hour they spend treating patients. Epic collects all that extra information in order to identify potential sources of plausible upcodes, which allows hospitals to bill patients, insurers, and Medicare through the nose for routine care. Epic can automatically recode "diabetes with no complications" from a Hierarchical Condition Category code 19 (worth $894.40) as "diabetes with kidney failure," code 18 and 136, which gooses the reimbursement to $1273.60.
Epic snitches on doctors to their bosses, giving them a dashboard to track doctors' compliance with upcoding suggestions. One of Kuttner's doctor sources says her supervisor contacts her with questions like, "That appointment was a 2. Don’t you think it might be a 3?"
Robert Kuttner is the perfect journalist to unravel the Epic scam. As a journalist who wrote for The New England Journal of Medicine, he's got an insider's knowledge of the health industry, and plenty of sources among health professionals. As he tells it, Epic is a cultlike, insular company that employs 12.500 people in its hometown of Verona, WI.
The EHR industry's origins start with a GW Bush-era law called the HITECH Act, which was later folded into Obama's Recovery Act in 2009. Obama provided $27b to hospitals that installed EHR systems. These systems had to more than track patient outcomes – they also provided the data for pay-for-performance incentives. EHRs were already trying to do something very complicated – track health outcomes – but now they were also meant to underpin a cockamamie "incentives" program that was supposed to provide a carrot to the health industry so it would stop killing people and ripping off Medicare. EHRs devolved into obscenely complex spaghetti systems that doctors and nurses loathed on sight.
But there was one group that loved EHRs: hospital administrators and the private companies offering Medicare Advantage plans (which also benefited from upcoding patients in order to soak Uncle Sucker):
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8649706/
The spread of EHRs neatly tracks with a spike in upcharging: "from 2014 through 2019, the number of hospital stays billed at the highest severity level increased almost 20 percent…the number of stays billed at each of the other severity levels decreased":
https://oig.hhs.gov/oei/reports/OEI-02-18-00380.pdf
The purpose of a system is what it does. Epic's industry-dominating EHR is great at price-gouging, but it sucks as a clinical tool – it takes 18 keystrokes just to enter a prescription:
https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2729481
Doctors need to see patients, but their bosses demand that they satisfy Epic's endless red tape. Doctors now routinely stay late after work and show up hours early, just to do paperwork. It's not enough. According to another one of Kuttner's sources, doctors routinely copy-and-paste earlier entries into the current one, a practice that generates rampant errors. Some just make up random numbers to fulfill Epic's nonsensical requirements: the same source told Kuttner that when prompted to enter a pain score for his TB patients, he just enters "zero."
Don't worry, Epic has a solution: AI. They've rolled out an "ambient listening" tool that attempts to transcribe everything the doctor and patient say during an exam and then bash it into a visit report. Not only is this prone to the customary mistakes that make AI unsuited to high-stakes, error-sensitive applications, it also represents a profound misunderstanding of the purpose of clinical notes.
The very exercise of organizing your thoughts and reflections about an event – such as a medical exam – into a coherent report makes you apply rigor and perspective to events that otherwise arrive as a series of fleeting impressions and reactions. That's why blogging is such an effective practice:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/05/09/the-memex-method/
The answer to doctors not having time to reflect and organize good notes is to give them more time – not more AI. As another doctor told Kuttner: "Ambient listening is a solution to a self-created problem of requiring too much data entry by clinicians."
EHRs are one of those especially hellish public-private partnerships. Health care doctrine from Reagan to Obama insisted that the system just needed to be exposed to market forces and incentives. EHRs are designed to allow hospitals to win as many of these incentives as possible. Epic's clinical care modules do this by bombarding doctors with low-quality diagnostic suggestions with "little to do with a patient’s actual condition and risks," leading to "alert fatigue," so doctors miss the important alerts in the storm of nonsense elbow-jostling:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5058605/
Clinicians who actually want to improve the quality of care in their facilities end up recording data manually and keying it into spreadsheets, because they can't get Epic to give them the data they need. Meanwhile, an army of high-priced consultants stand ready to give clinicians advise on getting Epic to do what they need, but can't seem to deliver.
Ironically, one of the benefits that Epic touts is its interoperability: hospitals that buy Epic systems can interconnect those with other Epic systems, and there's a large ecosystem of aftermarket add-ons that work with Epic. But Epic is a product, not a protocol, so its much-touted interop exists entirely on its terms, and at its sufferance. If Epic chooses, a doctor using its products can send files to a doctor using a rival product. But Epic can also veto that activity – and its veto extends to deciding whether a hospital can export their patient records to a competing service and get off Epic altogether.
One major selling point for Epic is its capacity to export "anonymized" data for medical research. Very large patient data-sets like Epic's are reasonably believed to contain many potential medical insights, so medical researchers are very excited at the prospect of interrogating that data.
But Epic's approach – anonymizing files containing the most sensitive information imaginable, about millions of people, and then releasing them to third parties – is a nightmare. "De-identified" data-sets are notoriously vulnerable to "re-identification" and the threat of re-identification only increases every time there's another release or breach, which can used to reveal the identities of people in anonymized records. For example, if you have a database of all the prescribing at a given hospital – a numeric identifier representing the patient, and the time and date when they saw a doctor and got a scrip. At any time in the future, a big location-data breach – say, from Uber or a transit system – can show you which people went back and forth to the hospital at the times that line up with those doctor's appointments, unmasking the person who got abortion meds, cancer meds, psychiatric meds or other sensitive prescriptions.
The fact that anonymized data can – will! – be re-identified doesn't mean we have to give up on the prospect of gleaning insight from medical records. In the UK, the eminent doctor Ben Goldacre and colleagues built an incredible effective, privacy-preserving "trusted research environment" (TRE) to operate on millions of NHS records across a decentralized system of hospitals and trusts without ever moving the data off their own servers:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/03/08/the-fire-of-orodruin/#are-we-the-baddies
The TRE is an open source, transparent server that accepts complex research questions in the form of database queries. These queries are posted to a public server for peer-review and revision, and when they're ready, the TRE sends them to each of the databases where the records are held. Those databases transmit responses to the TRE, which then publishes them. This has been unimaginably successful: the prototype of the TRE launched during the lockdown generated sixty papers in Nature in a matter of months.
Monopolies are inefficient, and Epic's outmoded and dangerous approach to research, along with the roadblocks it puts in the way of clinical excellence, epitomizes the problems with monopoly. America's health care industry is a dumpster fire from top to bottom – from Medicare Advantage to hospital cartels – and allowing Epic to dominate the EHR market has somehow, incredibly, made that system even worse.
Naturally, Kuttner finishes out his article with some antitrust analysis, sketching out how the Sherman Act could be brought to bear on Epic. Something has to be done. Epic's software is one of the many reasons that MDs are leaving the medical profession in droves.
Epic epitomizes the long-standing class war between doctors who want to take care of their patients and hospital executives who want to make a buck off of those patients.

yall are about to piss me off by not having any PASSING basic knowledge of the way the u.s. military manipulates its recruits into joining by typing up one of your uninformed, unresearched, unempathetic, individualistic, unbelievably annoying posts about how 100% of the people in the military ended up there because they just Love America So Damn Much! they're extremely mature and informed at time of recruitment, they can totally leave anytime they want, they totally had tons of other avenues in life they could've taken, there was no rush at all to get income as fast as possible, and everyone in the military also totally is part of the combat divisions and personally enjoys being IN the military very much, big believers of violence. everyone in the military is shooting guns all day, that's how that works. they LOVE BLOODSHED. also I love the "amewicans haha" twang to this type of shit because you're actually TOTALLY stealing our Thing, which is turning systemic issues into Individual Issues. Instead of talking about the powers that be, it's so Personal Choice up in here. It's, "well you shouldn't have done it then. I totally wouldn't because I know better." you don't wanna talk about the military industrial complex as a whole, and you don't want to talk about recruiters, you just want to pin the blame on Specific Individual People one-by-one, as if they're responsible for the system that they're being ground up in. someone was in the military? bad person, no matter what. it's easier to believe that, I guess, than to acknowledge that Normal People (with high school educations) are manipulated and incentivized into joining a system that is Bad. at like age 18. but yeah no that 18 year old should have just been smarter lol haha anyway here are some screenshots for no particular reason
side note this reply of someone going "umm just get loans and go into a high paying field it's easy XD" as a direct response to someone trying to explain how most americans joining the military are being funneled in that direction out of a need for money.
and another person who Decided that americans join the military just CLENCHING their teeth thinking of other people, and not thinking completely selfishly about their own selves and their own income/housing/healthcare.
#I had a longer post w more bullshit in it but ukw nobody's even gonna read THIS one. so.#dumb ass cunts seriously LMAO just the individualism of it all....#we're all just selectively forgetting that most people join the military straight out of high school / after failing to kickstart#their lives so they don't know shit yet and they are categorically not educated and don't have money#you NEED money and have been groomed by recruiters ALREADY into believing this is#The Best and Only to make a survivable amount of money without a college education-- bc they can't afford college btw#and they don't want to take on student debt either bc everyone already knows what a big fuckeroo that is#recruiters WILL DO ANYTHING TO GET YOU TO JOIN. they will KEEP CALLING YOU. they'll answer your questions#to make it sound like this is going to be a GREAT life decision. you can get all KINDS of jobs (true)#they love to say the thing about how only about 15% of the military will actually see combat in any way#they love to list all the jobs where you will literally just be working at an office or a pharmacy or in tech etc etc etc#the recruiters are offering housing healthcare steady pay and BONUSES if you sign on for longer.#so you let your guard down because you were so scared of the actual fighting. BECAUSE YOU'RE 18 IN THIS SCENARIO BTW.#you cunts will not meet anyone who hates the military as much as people who are NOW DONE working in the military#you don't know enough when they get you and then either you stay placated by the benefits or you scramble away as fast as possible#the number one military haters are people who know what goes on bc they already did it#source: I LIVE NEXT TO A MILITARY BASE LMAO PEOPLE HATE IT HERE!! they are NORMAL PEOPLE#I need you to get it into your head that the people committing atrocities in war were NORMAL when they joined#and that for every person in the military who's actively shedding blood there's 20 who do PAPERWORK#and they both are being put in the same category by you!! and they are BOTH being controlled by the same system!!#sergle.txt#I hate yall I really do.

donnie's "my space needs to be perfectly and traditionally clean and organized and sterile and if anything is out of place i will start tweaking" neurodivergence vs leo's "my space needs to be reflective of me and my organized chaos and it needs to Feel like mine at all times and if someone cleans it without my constant input i will start tweaking" neurodivergence Fight. donnie sprays febreze in leo's room because he thinks it smells bad and leo attacks him
#personal#rottmnt#mikey doesnt count in the second category because his room is Just a mess#its organized chaos but i honestly just see him as 'lazy' (adhd procrastination gets really bad with chores. not his fault)#while with leo it LOOKS that way but he actually has it exactly to his preferences. which describes leo as a character pretty well i think#like YES he puts all his clean clothes in one hamper. it cheats the adhd system. he gets mad when donnie rants about wrinkles and tries to-#-hang them up. shit like that

I'm about 5 seconds away from getting real mean about people implying or outright saying that being pro endo = being endogenic if people don't fucking knock it off.
#syscourse#I'm so tired#stop fucking basically fakeclaiming my and many other systems trauma#and implying you do not think we were actually traumatized and that that trauma caused our system#because we aren't against endos#bc I know damn well most of the people doing this are putting systems with other non anti endo labels in the “pro endo” category too

this evening I am once again mourning the fact that there's never been a really good high budget cyberpunk mmorpg
#it seems like scifi mmos in particular have a really hard time for some reason#I mean.... there's a million billion failed high fantasy mmos out there AS WELL#but I feel like every time a scifi mmo at least gets big enough to have SOME recognizability and a tiny sliver of market share#it either fades into the 'limping along supported by a small fanbase of really dedicated players' category (swtor)#or it just fucking dies and gets wiped from the face of the internet (wildstar)#BUT ANYWAY just THINK...... how cool that would be#flexible classes based on what kind of guns or melee weapons you wield#maybe it's a shadowrun clone so there's also magic. or like. definitely-not-magic that's all technobabble#cybernetics upgrade system that has both mechanical and cosmetic components#big grungy neon-drenched hub cities but there's also smaller settlements and mad max style wastelands#and some rare ~untouched wilderness~ that definitely doesn't have any secret government facilities hidden in it#motorcycle mounts#in one of the dlc you go to the moon for some reason

a few additional notes on the matinee + what i wrote down for the final show of STAGE/FRIGHT (all apr 5. i'm probably the last one to realise apr 5 = 9??)
‼️ spoilers ahead ‼️
the matinee:
-during the SARDINES reference in the kidnappers, someone behind us gasped and said "sardines!" (so cute tbh!!)
-one thing i forgot to mention about the lack of video wall - we also miss the "Reece Shearsmith 1969-2025" bit. i wonder how that played out with the first-timers!
-on a related note - i'm 99.9% sure the 2 men sat behind us were seeing the show for the first time, bc the one who said "oh my godd" kept asking the person he came with, whether the show had been running for long. iirc his companion couldn't really answer & said "today's the last one i think"
-the people sat next to me i felt like they were wondering why i was covering my ears before it started. well. they found out why soon enough 🤣 (also at some point before the first jumpscare & the one before the start of act ii, i yelled at @somuchwatersoclosetohome that i wasn't listening to anything she was saying 🤣🤣)
anddd this behaviour did not change for the last show 😂 gosh how was knowing there were jumpscares even worse!! it's the anticipatory reaction or something, i guess??
anyway. for the last show - AGAIN thank you @somuchwatersoclosetohome for the ticket. honestly, the matinee show was an impulse decision made while i was at work (which really shows how terminally online i am 🤦♀️), but the final one i was like ?? do i even try? but after a brief chat and she came through so quickly it was like what!! this is happening i guess!!
a quick note: i'm aware more of the fandom have seen this one so none of the below is original or even coherent tbh. just everything i jotted down during the interval + formulated in my head earlier today!
the seating:
-was up in a box (with @donotbelasagne) this time! here's what the view was like:

-the far-left of the stage is obstructed view, so for moments like in terror at the asylum eg the goudron/cragg bit by the door or the painting of madame goudron's head coming off - you would miss if you didn't lean forward (well the former you would still miss, actually).
-on the plus side - what was fun was seeing all the marks on the stage!! which i didn't start focusing on until bcdr when tommy & len are moving/things around. and little things like seeing prop (or real?) sushi in the itsu box during a house divided, and something actually in maggie's pret coffee cup (but likely a prop since i don't think there was actual liquid in it lol). and vince's coffee cup was definitely completely sealed (there was what looked like a black sticker on it). also seeing len/steve crouching behind the wall during brown bottles! hehe
-the main bit that i stared at was during the self-taping scene when abby & sherrie go to play the tape back, there's nothing actually playing in the camera. i suppose that's obvious knowing the video wall footage is pre-recorded, but still oddly satisfying to see it!
-as an aside, us being in an upper box means i was conscious of people possibly staring at me covering my ears before the jumpscares loll but you know what! i saw a few people do the same thing before the end of the interval. so. you know.
the kidnappers:
-fr i just wanna quietly say, i was hoping the last guest would be tim key (more about him in my upcoming soppy/journey post)
-but jonathan ross was a nice surprise!
-the part that got me unexpectedly was tommy's usual "you're not on graham norton now" line, and jonathan's response of just flipping the bird lmaoo, then tommy/reece's subsequent "he wouldn't have you on anyway!" 🤣🤣🤣
-jonathan calling len/steve "odd looking" and tommy/reece "generic/short handsome guy"?? someone please tell me the EXACT phrasing bc i was too busy going 😮🤭 (self-reminder to watch that interview!!)
-when he goes to hide in the wardrobe, he doesn't close the door properly iirc! christina(?) had to close it!
-steve drawing out the celery line omggg it was amazing
-when jonathan bursts out of the wardrobe to correct len, he just goes back in again! i think someone backstage or christina again had to remind him to go back out.
-the only part of his tirade that's seared into my brain is calling len/steve a hedgehog (what!!!)
-as mentioned in @kookaburrito's post, jonathan's bit going up the stairs is namedropping mark (ofc), but he says "mark gatiss and his beautiful swan neck" (omg!!!) he was NOT expecting that combination of words to come out of his mouth lbr!!
interval:
-at the ~15min mark, the safety curtain kept going up and down, and the lights kept dimming and brightening? definitely got a bit nervous that the video wall wasn't working again.
-just for fun i recorded a bit of this (i hope this gets uploaded/posts properly, lmk if it doesn't):
-it went maybe 5mins over than usual but all seemed well when the theatre attendants closed the curtains!
stray observations:
-before the show, @donotbelasagne mentioned that there are recorded coughing noises playing throughout?? it was funny to hear this bc during the matinee, i can't remember during which part now, i definitely DID notice some coughing. i tend to be easily annoyed sensitive of this, so when i heard it, i remember thinking "who the HELL is coughing at a time like this??" for this one, i did clock coughing again!
-about the toby/reece switch - i realise it's not a huge technical thing but this time i did try to watch the centre of the stage. when it goes completely dark and abby starts circling around with the camera light, i did see that a body (don't know whose ofc!) was still lying there! and...that's all i have to say about that lol
-during tears of laughter, iirc after bloody belle's bit, the associate director & simon evans briefly go into that box to watch! simon was also recording a bit on his phone!!
-i missed looking at goudron's sleeve garters wtf!! but now that i think about it i guess i did see them but wasn't going gasp it's sleeve garters. idk?? gah!!
-steve flubbing the "bloody good piece(?) of theatre" line haha!!
-WHO shouted "bloody belle" three times early, during the addressing the audience part!!
-the curtain call and steve thanking every member of the company, the stage hands, and the front of house staff!! 🥹🥹🥹 (also iirc toby was actually crying or at least extremely teary-eyed! as was everyone i think!)
-for both shows iirc many people "aww'd" at the "maybe every ghost story really is a love story" line at the end <3
two thoughts on stage door:
-i did attempt to make eye contact this time! don't think i did last time due to the sudden-ness of it all, but alas r&s weren't really looking at anyone anyway - probably due to the rush!
-can i just say it didn't immediately occur to me before, but bhav is quite good-looking!!
alright i think that's it for now! anything i've left out or forgotten i'm sure someone else may bring up & articulate it better lol.
#in9#inside no 9#inside no. 9#stage/fright#reece shearsmith#steve pemberton#it's good to get this all out of my system so i can try to be a bit more offline tomorrow#seeing everyone's soppy posts come up...ah 🥲#(will also be formulating one and it WILL be long and rambly. as per.)#(not totally sure if i'm writing it tomorrow night or when i get home)#actually tuning in a bit to the oliviers where they just presented the category before s/f's?#eh. good night lol#(did some editing but again excuse any errors)#vagueeyes.pdf#vagueeyes.jpg#edit: fixed minor wording error

You know what is really getting me about the current moment in the UK? Among all the other things that are really getting me, that is. It's that the trans community is being forced to roll back the arguments we use and leave behind language and battles we were making headway on, and now I read article after article, by trans people, that never even mention the fact that non-binary people a) exist, b) are trans and c) are affected by the whole dealio that's going down.
#i'm used to my existence being a footnote but i kind of was used to the footnote being there you know?#but it would be nice to have it acknowledged that those of us who can't and don't want to be sorted back into either category#are at risk too - sometimes more risk#hang on the article i was just reading was *by a non-binary person* and they STILL never brought us up as a coherent group#i don't feel terrifically threatened on a day to day because i am not someone who's easily threatened by things#but other people are - i have friends who are in more precarious positions than i am#but i am obliquely aware that by existing as something that looks like 'gender non-conforming or crossdressing man' from the outside#i'm putting myself in the line of fire#to an extent i'm doing it on purpose. i'm hard to threaten and have a support system#but it's a weird position that i'm in#transitioned so hard i came almost full circle while not changing at all

Whenever I see the defense of the lack of evil choices in a game be 'well our data showed most people choose the good options, so we've taken out the bad options' I get really frustrated.
NOT choosing the evil option *is also* a part of roleplaying. Making your character someone who chooses the 'good' option, only matters if they could 've chosen the bad (probably easier) option.
It doesn't even need to have a big branching path - much as I would love to see it - but if the bad option is completely absent, you are damaging the potentional to roleplay for both evil and good characters.
#veilguard critical#also stop using cold data to make story decisions#presumably you hired writers to write#the infamous 'no one wants to be a renegade' data from bioware#guess what you created a system where you needed to be either one or the othet to unlock the best choices at the end of the game#bioware#mass effect#got it better in 3 where you could choose from both categories and still unlock unique choices later on

2024 reads / storygraph
Asunder
slow-paced high fantasy
a woman who has a contract with an eldritch entity allowing her to see the dead & survives by taking various jobs
when a job searching for stranded smugglers in a cave goes wrong, she ends up with the soul of a dying stranger bound to her shadow
along with a scholar and her old childhood friend, they travel to his home country to find a way to unbind him and save them both
dark fantasy world with gods, demonic entities, arcane magic, and semi-sentient beasts used as transport
#asunder#kerstin hall#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#okay SUPER fascinating worldbuilding with some very visceral creatures and biological constructs and interesting magic systems.#many things I like. A great cast of characters. Honestly I could read tons more stories set in this world.#it’s very slow building and meandering narratively; focusing on the complex journey of the main character#didn’t love the audio narration tbh - it felt like some lines are read with the wrong emphasis or tone? but I got used to it after a while#So this has one of my absolute favourite tropes (bodysharing.) unfortunately it turns it into a romance which is. well.#it just doesn’t hit the same if you make it romantic!! so that kinda made it change traintracks from being on a direct line to#potentially 5 stars to a whole different station where i do not live. lol.#I SUPPOSE it’s a well developed relationship and I’d prefer romances more like that than instalove I guess.#I did love their dynamic; too; but suddenly realising it was romantic threw me for a loop. I had put him in the annoying dad category.#I do also feel like we didn’t get quite enough of him as an individual person and characterisation - which obviously makes sense to an#extent; but I felt like I only got to see more of him in the brief time around his father.#Also he was surprisingly chill and nice to her immediately considering he was essentially her hostage???#Anyway I did enjoy a lot of it; it just suffers the unfortunate tragedy of#[literally my favourite thing made for me] [turns that thing into literally my least favourite thing i hate]#but also -random dude you’re bound to being overly protective and considerate despite barely knowing you (platonic/familial vibe) - yeah!#random dude you’re bound to being overly protective and considerate despite barely knowing you (romantic) ehhhh…idk.....#(to me personally. i'm sure people enjoy that. whatever)

one thing i really like about Fukase is that, as a gnc, he kinda validates me in a weird way? like, his design is obviously pretty fem: the fluffy hair, the soft face shape and uhh... the skirt... and the tights...
BUT!!! unlike many other designs for gnc boys, Fukase is kind of extremely tasteful/restrained in a way. like you don't get to see his midriff or 90% of his legs. two things which are kind of extremely difficult to replicate for peeps who have testosterone (at least for a time period longer than one or two nights). mostly because of hair. and not all of us have the money and foresight required to look like astolfo. yet Fukase still looks distinctly feminine! like sure, you don't get to see if he fits the stereotype of slim hairless twink, but you know damn well this guy rocks his shit and lives his truth.
and his voice, too! so, again, unlike most feminine guy characters Fukase's voice actually sounds. well. at least a little masculine. this does depend on however the voca producer decides to mess around, but i still think it's worth mentioning. like yeah, you might find a cover that makes Fukase sound like teto, but also... @bar0nxfukase makes him sound so goddamn good you guys. makes me shed a tear. especially the kyu-kurarin cover! RAHH!! the art, too... i love when people draw Fukase with more masculine features. i love all Fukase art but ouuughh something about Fukase with a sharp jawline just hits different...
so yeah!! Fukase is awesome. he is like one of the only characters with a distinctly feminine design that actually makes me feel valid. shout out to all my Fukase artists. please never stop he fuels me. sobbing.
#fukase vocaloid#vocaloid fukase#wait what else do i even tag#gnc#i guess??? idk mang#just wanted to get this out of my system even though its midnight#i didnt want to forget this train of thought in my sleep#so here you go#also i do realize i kinda glossed over his face being androgynous but like#ehhhh i think its relatively fine?? not like ive seen anyone do it much better tbh#also you never know maybe hes just using makeup#same goes for possible facial hair btw#is it weird to discuss a vocaloid's facial hair?? i feel like i look like a psycho right now tbh#like i know people say wackier stuff but this is in a different category of things you can say so#maybe im the most deranged fukase fan out there who knows
