Thoughts on the new Superman movie

Sure this movie is not perfect, but this is literally the best adaptation we could have gotten for Superman: it's colourful, it's dorky and above all it's hopeful. So bear with me because it's been two days since I've seen it AND I NEED TO TALK ABOUT IT

What I most loved about the movie is the fact that it shows how much kindness is important, it shows the incredible impact that something that looks so simple and basic can have. It shows that even though humans fuck up so many things, they can also do a lot of good: yes, Superman is an alien BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY HE'S HUMAN (guess who cried their eyes out on that last speech, spoiler: me).

The way war is literally manufactured by a xenophobic billionaire who cares only about himself and the way we're all aware that it's very very clear which wars are being critised here. The way Superman is not tied to America but to all people because all people deserve to live in peace and to be protected. The fact that the only thing he cares about is helping others, not because it's a political act but because it's the right thing to do. The way animals' lives are shown to be just as important those of human beings. The way they show how family is not just blood and also how much it's important to teach kids kindness because maybe one day that's what's going to make them save someone. The way it shows how much real journalism is important and the way it talks about the very real effects of the widespread hate that we see online. The way it shows the barbaric treatment of immigrants and how they're denied even basic human rights (and I'm not referring just to Superman's arrest, but also to the way Mali was seen by Lex as nothing but expandable meat - the way he makes fun of him after he killed him was literally terrifying).

And then there's also the ways the character are treated. Lois never needs to be saved, on the contrary she's the who saves superman. She's a badass who's not afraid to confront fucking Superman. Then we have Mr. Terrific who's just terrific (I apologise for my sins) and the fact that he was played by Edi Gathegi who deserved so much better than how Marvel treated him and who did such a good job portraying the character that it's actually insane. Then there's my daughter Eve who literally outsmarted one of the smartest people on the planet with some sexy selfies: she's an icon, she's a legend. And let's not even talk about my son Metamorpho, my mother Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner and his green fuck-yous to war. And the fact that Superman keeps getting beat up is beautiful: he know he can take it and so he keeps acting like a shield for others, he keeps getting beaten up because his main goal is to save people not to destroy his enemy with his god-like powers. And he's so so silly and he says "golly" and he saves squirrels and he wears his underpants over his pants (and I'm getting emotional just thinking about it, David Corenswet did such an amazing job). And Krypto is just the bestest boy and that's really all there's to say because he's just so precious and silly and I love him. But I also LOVED what Nicholas Hoult did with his Lex Luthor, because literally what???? I hated him so much: no redemption arc, no sad backstory, no likable personality. He's just pure evil.

So basically thank you James Gunn for understanding and loving Superman. Thank you for given the fans and the non-fans such a great beginning to the new DCU.

I'm flabbergasted; I love them already to an absurd degree. They're literally if batman and superman were actually gay for each other, killed, and also better in every other conceivable way imaginable <3

So, o dont want to spoil anything about how when Clarke realizes she does love Lexa. But i can certainly talk about when she realized she could love Lexa.

And funnily enough, Clarke's realization comes from falling in love with Finn. She knows from the start they will never work. She knows its young love and although as an alpha she could technically break her engagement with Lexa and marry Finn, it would be embarrassing for Clarke's family, humiliating for Lexa's family and more importantly, it would devastate Lexa.

And is in loving Finn that Clarke realizes what love is. And that she doesn't feel that love for Lexa and yet, how easy it would be for her to love her. Lexa is her best friend in many ways. Clarke adores her already, all that is missing is actual romantic love. And as Clarke realized what love is, it somehow shows her a future where she loves Lexa - because she can only see her future with Lexa. Not in a resigned to her arranged marriage way, but in an excited and hopeful manner. Clarke wants to marry her best friend and spend her life with her. Now that she knows what love is, she is so positive she can feel that for Lexa.

This is why Clarke assures Lexa that the relationship she has with Finn will end for certain. She just needs to live out this love for the beta so she can almost learn to love Lexa later.

And in the end, Lexa is grateful for that. She knows her heart is safer with Clarke than with any one else, even if she was to place it in the ends of another alpha who loves her from the start.

Their marriage and love are about choice. They are a deliberate act. Lexa is constantly choosing to continue to love Clarke. Clarke chooses to choose Lexa's love every day.

And it's by loving someone else that Clarke understands that loving Lexa is not an if but a when. So why postpone their future for when she is in love when Clarke will already so happily choose to fall in love with Lexa forever?
