Aspect Cross Theory; or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Quadrants
Or at least, that's what I'm calling it.
I find a lot of the explanations I hear about the aspects really confusing in some ways, but I thought up a way to explain and visualize the aspects in a way I feel is a lot more intuitive. And I think it can help explain some parts of the aspect wheel that kinda confused me about viewing Blood, Breath, Time and Space as axes on a graph.
I don't know if this is something someone has already come up with or not, but I haven't seen this way of looking at it before. (Though, I'm pretty new to classpecting, I only just finished reading Homestuck.) Ultimately, I like this idea too much to not share it.
The basic concept is the same as the axis theory, just repackaged.
Each quadrant has a meaning, and the aspect in the center of each quadrant, the pole aspects, is what defines it. So there's a Time quadrant, a Space quadrant, a Breath quadrant, and a Blood quadrant.
The aspects clockwise and counter-clockwise to the center can be thought of as variations on the center aspect, focusing more on a specific part of it related to whatever the quadrant adjacent to it is.
For example, Heart can be thought of as "Blood-like Time," Time has a large focus on action, while Blood has a large focus on emotions and relationships. So Heart can be thought of as the part of action that has to do with emotions. Motivations, and, by extension, one's identity.
One thing that confused me a little bit about the axis theoy is why, for example, Heart and Rage seem so different despite both being related to Blood and Time, and I think this way of viewing it explains it pretty well. Where Heart is "Blood-like Time," Rage is "Time-like Blood," the part of emotion that has to do with action. Rage uses action as a tool to resolve its feelings, while Heart uses its feelings as a tool to understand its actions.
This can also give an explanation for why some vertical/horizontal pairs will feel more closely related than others. Doom is a lot more like Rage than it is like Hope, I'd say, and with this graph you barely even have to think about why that is. Doom and Rage share a quadrant, but Doom and Hope are on completely opposite sides.
In other words, Doom and Rage are both types of Blood, while Doom and Hope are both just "Space-like".
I feel like this also helps intuitively explain why Light, the aspect of knowledge, is associated with luck and victory, something that I had a hard time understanding. Light is, at its core, "Breath-like Time," focused on what concepts and idealism have to do with taking action, like learning, and victory. And of course, if you were to steal victory, you'd probably have a good deal of luck.
Again, these ideas really arn't new, but I hope this is at least a novel way of visualizing it that might make it easier to think about. I've found it helpful in understanding the nuances on how the aspects relate to one another and taking a more zoomed out view on the meaning of each aspect.

Hello! As someone who loves having good study materials, I made a Beginner’s Guide to Homestuck Classpecting. It’s only 5 pages!
This guide has a focus on the class side of classpecting, covering foundational information including:
What the classes represent.
How the class system is structured.
How active and passive are defined.
It includes links to where all the information comes from. Most info is from the comic itself and nearly verbatim, while some info is from archived or now-deleted tweets from Andrew Hussie.
This isn’t a comprehensive guide, mostly it’s a guide for people who either know nothing and need a good spot to jump in or for people who like having a lot of references organized in a quick to find place. Either way, I hope someone enjoys checking this out! ✨

My guesses of what the Candy/Omega Kids' Classpects will be
Currently, we lack information on both the classes and aspects of all the new BC-original characters. But since they all seem to be entering the game, and Vrissy in particular has been confirmed to have a god-tier outfit, it's safe to assume that they'll have classpects.
A theory that's been common since the original launch of ^2 is that the Candy kids will have the Classes & Apects which remained unused by the Beta & Alpha kids. I agree with this, as continuing the pattern would let the team examine the less explored parts of the classpect system, and help separate the Omega kids from their parents. Furthermore, I think that the new kids just represent the unused aspects very well. So, as for which person I think goes which which class & aspect, I believe the following: Yiffany "Yiffy" Longstocking - Sylph of Rage Tavros "Tavvy" Crocker - Bard of Doom Harry Anderson Egbert - Mage of Blood Vriska "Vrissy" Maryam-lalonde - Thief of Mind
I have considerate faith in my aspect guesses, though less so in my Class guesses.
As justification for Yiffy being Rage, I am simply going to post this excerpt from Page 562 and the EZ Rage description and let them speak for themselves.
As for her being a Sylph (with sylph meaning "understands their aspect"), I think her attitude of thinking she understands everything about how the world works fits that description.
(Alternatively, she could be a Bard because her muteness and the orderly bullshit she's dragged into [like being held captive or, even worse, private boarding school] prevent her from showing her rage at all times [in a similar manner to how Gamzee's sopor, Kurloz's sewed lips, and dirk's overthinking suppressed their aspects]. Not to mention, her love of watching shit get destroyed. This class has a blatant issue, which is that she shares it with Gamzee, which is why I have my doubts on it despite it lining up so well with her character.) As for Tavvy, I say he's Doombound because of him being the Crockercorp CEO's son. Being in that position, he's been put onto the side of the organization/empire that's brought most of the suffering and conflict currently encapsulating Earth-C. Tavvy's whole attitude also has an aura of 'doom and gloom,' to it, even in comparison to the original Tavros Nitram. Also, it should be noted that him being Doombound would be an interesting subversion of Jane & Meenah, the previous Crockers, being lifebound.
I say he's a Bard because he goes against the Doom-full situation he's been stuck in, albeit in minor ways. He's allied with the resistance, and is dating the daughter of one of the main resistance leaders. And despite him not being the most optimistic, he doesn't let it show too much. Harry and Vrissy were a bit harder for me to decide on. Starting with Harry, he's described as a "social climber," in the patreon commentary of the page where we saw his phone, works with others for musical plays, and appears to be the person who's most into the celebrity-esque role thrust onto him by his literal-son-of-god status. He also appears to be closer to his parents than the others are, or at the very least talks about them more. Being bloodbound would give yet another candy kid an inversion of their parent's aspect, as he's the opposite of John's Breath. Lastly, I want to add the anecdote that when Vrissy makes fun of Tavvy for his genocidal parent during the pre-hiatus run, he's the first person to say that it's not cool to bring Tavvy down for that.
Mages are a... confusing class, and one with very little to work with. My personal (and admittedly unpopular take) is that it's the Active equivalent of either Heir or Maid. Since the role of popularity is something which has been thrust onto him more than note, and because he gets dragged along with his parents' feelings consistently, I think it fits.
Lastly for the Omegas: Vrissy. One class and one aspect remain: Thief and Mind. Firstly, I would like to mention that Vrissy has not once been shown bearing the Scorpio sign. It's nowhere to be seen on her outfit, and when she texts someone her face is used instead of any symbol. As such, there's nothing tying her to Light, Despite Vriska and Aranea both being Lightbound. Considering that this story has gone out of its way to never associate her with Light, I believe her aspect is something else. My best guess is Mind. I say this because unlike Vriska, who's usually going straight into things without a plan, Vrissy consistently comes up with a plan before taking a step forward, though given that she's still a Serket, this usually results in her arguing with her friends while trying to make said plans. Finally, Vrissy being Mindbound makes her a Serket with the Pyropes' aspect, while her being a thief shows some inheritance from Vriska.
The previously mentioned arguing is also why I say she's a Thief. She's the one making her partners go through impulsive shenanigans for her, may it be to hide a body or to crawl through a window for a makeout session. Also, her improved Vriska mind control abilities enable her to literally steal minds.
Aaaaaannndd that's it. I was originally going to conjecture over the Deltritus kids as well, but I'll save that for another post since this one has gone on long enough. Just as a bonus: Harry, Vrissy, and the Satyrs (Dirk's Species) are Prospitan, while Tavvy, Yiffy, and the Nymphs (Rose's Species) are Derse. Why? Because it came to me in a dream goodbye

Flawed Vs achieved classpects
First post but whatever Ok, so i have a semi-Head canon/ Semi Theory about classpects, and this could be dumb but fuck it, my wife thinks its cool and thats good enough for me, Flawed Vs achieved classpects The basic premise is that everyone has at least 2 classpects, their flawed, and their achieved. Their achieved classpect is what everyone considers to be their actual classpect, what they achieve after all their hard work and journeys through sburb. Their flawed classpect, however, is when that fails, or if they fail to change at all.
Classpects are supposed to mark your ultimate self after moving past your problems through sburb, right? So... what happens if you just. dont do that? That is your flawed classpect. Think of it like the opposite of an ultimate self, you are the embodiment of your problems. Let me give an example. Say a player with heavy hatred towards themselves plays sburb, and throughout it, they learn to Accept, and even love themselves, while also helping others love themselves, and thus become a Sylph of heart. Now, lets look at another timeline. In this one, they continue to hate themselves, and even hate anyone who even acts like them. In this timeline, they fail to change, and achieve their flawed form, a prince of heart. Does this sound familiar? yes, that's just dirk. A flawed/Achieved classpect is one of those things that you cant really use a quiz or anything for, its a very introspective thigny [Sic]. It is also very specific to a person, and their personal problems. Here's a non-canon example I had involving canon characters that i thought was interesting. Caliborn, as a lord of time, is his flawed classpect. He does not improve, he does not change, he just takes what he wants, and kills who he pleases. Calliope, as a muse of space, is also her flawed classpect. She is unable to actually achieve anything, and just continues to do what she has always done. What are their achieved classpects? The opposite of eachother. Muse of Space Caliborn, and lord of time calliope. In this alternate timeline where they both achieve their true and ultimate selves, things go a lot differently. Firstly, with no LE to "already have been here", Calliope would have just given everyone a happy ending. Boring, I know, we love our angst here, but she would have just not let sburb ever happen, similar to the MSPAR timeline. But, with the help of a much friendlier muse of space caliborn, the two of them would have likely played around with the timeline itself, making new... Alternate Universes. Yep. They both basically just become actual AU and Fanfiction writers.
This actually makes sense too, as they're both meant to represent different parts of the fandom, and thus, the ultimate forms of the fandom are to come together and create something new. (MSPFA's, Fanfiction, AU's, Fanart, ETC.) Has this absolutely been a dumb theory? Maybe, but fuck it, its cool and i like it, so im posting it anyways.

Heart aspect theory:
We know that in Homestuck hope players are naturally alluring (as we see with Jake) and that light players naturally bring attention or "light" to themselves (as we see with Vriska and from what Callie said). So by this logic we can assume that all aspects have some kind of attraction/repulsiveness spectrum that they sit on.
However I noticed something about heart players, or specifically the fandom connection to heart players. They might come of as weird for their peers or other characters, but they are heavily popular in fandom. Both Nepeta and Dirk are characters very well known even for people who don't know what Homestuck is, Bro is definitely very popular character in fandom and a lot of his behaviors are either forgotten or overshadowed by his fanon version (not to mention all bro simps), Meulin is one of more popular dancestors with BARELY any screen time. Not to mention Davepeta who is absolutely adored by fans.
So my point is: Heart players seems to be usually very popular outside of Homestuck. Maybe something along the lines of; heart players are naturally likeable outside of their 4th wall.
There are 2 counterpoints to this theory: 1. Disciple who is also a heart bound is often forgotten when you talk about ancestors, but also not all hope players will have this natural charm like Jake (Both Eridan and Cronus show that, mostly because of their class), and 2. How could Hussie expect the heart players to be popular, and here I think he MIGHT have chosen specific traits for this characters to get fandom attached to them (like Nepeta's roleplaying and shipping, or mentioning that Dirk likes rainbow dash. Some small traits like that might have helped them to get more likable in eyes of the fans.)
Being popular in fandom doesn't mean however that they are strictly just liked by their personality, since we all know how often mischaracterisation happens in fandom. But in general concept they are popular for both fanarts and ships.
So basically this is short theory I have for now and I think it's at least plausible. Pls let me know what you think about it!!

Damn, I never noticed these parallels!
It's honestly hard to tell whether they're due to the character's Title, though. Most of these characteristics aren't really unique to the Class they're assigned to here, with one exception.
Yes, the two Knights grew up vigilant - but Vriska's childhood made her jumpy, too, and Jade was explicitly encouraged by her grandfather to be on guard. Plus, all Alternian trolls need to be ready to fight - their planet has a million ways to kill them, from highbloods to FLARPers to cullings to undead.
It's true that Rose never understood her mother, but her peers aren't any better. Dave's still half-convinced the puppet porn is ironic, and John spent his entire life believing his father was a circus clown. Evidently, there's not a lot of straightforward communication going on in any of these families.
Both Witches have a duty they've long been aware of - but so have Kanaya and Aradia. However, there might indeed be something to what you said about their Guardians.
It's hard to dispute that Jade and Feferi have the strangest custodians in their respective parties - two eldritch monsters with unclear motivations and world-ending capabilities.
I've never had much luck analyzing the Witches, but maybe I should start with their unusual familiars. Perhaps the Witch is Sburb's answer to a Druid or Ranger - a class designed to interface with the natural environment and its inhabitants.
You run your whole palace as a sort of WILDLIFE ADOPTION FACILITY, even if the wildlife's need for care is dubious at best, and the practice really just amounts to an elaborate ROLE PLAYING SCENARIO.
If you squint, it certainly seems to fit. Jade's furaffinity for nature is well-documented, and Feferi's most valuable contribution to the party is the alliance she's formed with an alien species.
The main issue is that, again, these aren't the only characters with an affinity for the natural world, so I'd need to see a lot more evidence before I'm 100% sold on this take. We'll see if it holds up, going forward.

So I've been generally out of the loop with Homestuck^2 but I have some thoughts due to the most recent upd8.
Please HS2 team don't be messing with me I NEED to see another game of Sburb because there is so much potential for the roleplayers, wiki divers, game devs and game enjoyers out here waiting with bated breath for more info.
As many of you may or may not know, there are LARGE gaps in the info we have about Sburb that HS2 could be aiming to patch. Namely: What does a regular game of Sburb actually look like? All the ones we've seen have had both major deviations from what "normal gameplay" is as well as large parts glossed over that I know I and many people would LOVE to have more explanations for.
Even just more data points would be great, which brings me to something else HS2 could show: What do all the (cl)as(s)pects do? Now we do have some ideas about what all the aspects and classes do but as many theorists know we are simply lacking data points on many different aspects and classes. With the chance that some ex-players could be going in with them I am personally hoping the last few aspects and classes get some extra info on them in the form of the latest kids.
The following classes and aspects being assigned would give us at least 2 proper data points on each if they are assigned:
Mage, Thief, Sylph, Bard, Blood, Rage, Mind and Doom.
These classes and aspects are given to at least one troll but no humans, thus begging more questions about them. At least with Sylph and Thief we have Arcadia and Meenah, but a full game showing these off would be greatly appreciated.
Of course I am extremely curious as well about how all our ex-players/guardians will affect this upcoming game but instead of getting into my theories on that let me leave you with this:
CLASSPECT GUESSES DUH!!!
Harry - Sylph of Mind
Tavros - Bard of Doom
Vrissy - Thief of Blood
Yiffany - Mage of Rage
I feel like some of these are off, but Vrissy mirroring Vriska as a Thief and Yiffany being a Rage player seem pretty likely unless I'm just dumb lol
#homestuck#hs2#homestuck 2#beyond canon#classpecting#theories#PLEASE GIVE ME ANOTHER GAME RUNNING TABLESTUCK WOULD BE SO MUCH EASIER PLEASSSSSE!!!!!!!

i feel like theres a stigma surrounding dewdrop's classpecting brochure for multiple reasons, and i was turned off from it at first, but holy shit it's actually the best classpecting resource out there by a country milk.
*mile
my advice to anyone who wants to get really fucking good at classpecting, and wants to actually take it seriously. read the brochure. hear them out. even if you disagree on the controversial bits, there is so much good class/aspect analysis in there
specifically draft 18 is the latest one at time of writing
#homestuck#classpecting#there is so much conflicting info out there around classes but dewdrops theories. are very sound. very solid

I…find myself thinking about Homestuck again.
…a lot. I’m going to have to exercise this demon and I think that’s going to have to be either fan art or theory posts. Maybe both.
For now, I leave you with this clusterfuck:

I made this cheat sheet to every Direct Mention of a class's active/passive alignment today.
In above, i've excluded everything like interpretation of characters' behaviors or of subtext, mentions of a character being active/passive and mentions of classes in ways that don't directly indicate activeness or passiveness. I do also want to keep a more general track of those subtexts and generic mentions of classes, so i'll make a list of them below and might update as i find more. I'll quote relevant parts where it's shorter and leave entire pages at the page reference. {And leave my personal comments in brackets like so}
Homestuck Proper: Calliope on Rogues, Calliope on Princes, Aradia on Knights and Seers: p.4514, 4564, 4354 - {Mentioned above, but there's more i haven't quoted.} Scratch on Seers: p.3832-3835 - {Too long to be quoted. It's unclear exactly to what extent Doc is talking about "A Seer", "A Seer of Mind" and "Terezi", respectively. } Brain Ghost Dirk on Pages: p.4875 - "Pages have a lot of untapped potential. That's practically all there is to the class, actually. But when they eventually find it, look out." Aranea on Sylphs: p.6553 - "I am a very powerful Sylph of Light. I have had millions of sweeps to hone my abilities. As one gifted with the aspect of light, certain outcomes will be prone to breaking in my favor. And as an ancient, highly experienced sylph, I wield an unprecedented ability to heal. A doomed timeline is really just an anatomical feature of a much larger organism. Like a capillary which comes to an end, because it has withered and died. I believe I will be able to heal this offshoot. And with enough time and patience, I am confident I can restore its vitality to such a great extent, it will effectively take over as the alpha timeline, thus reducing English to a lost footnote of paradox space." - {Obviously that last thing didn't happen, but she did end up making the Game-Over timeline take over as the alpha timeline. She just didn't understand the implications of that within Paradox-Space's framework.} AH on... Clowns?: p.5484 - "It means crazy clowns just won't die for some reason. In adventures such as yours, they tend to linger long past their welcome. They linger and linger and linger, and just when you think you're totally fed up with their bullshit and you can't take another second of it, they just linger some more. And you never know what they're up to, and they're always scheming in the shadows, and it's quite possible that whatever master plan they're hatching just doesn't make the slightest bit of sense at all. But it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter how stupid the clown's schemes are, or how sick of him everybody is. He just. Won't. Die." - {This is sort of my crackpot theory, but i believe this passage is a subtextual explanation of the Bard as a character archetype. Essentially a Jester staying in the shadow of its king. }
Beyond Canon: Got nothing beyond what's in the sheet
Q&A: On how Lunar Sway relates to Active/Passive Classes: p. - http://wheals.github.io/tumblr/tumblr.html#post25156009290q1 - {In the cheat sheet, but as before, there's more}
Book Commentary: On Aradia and Vriska: Book 4, p.143 - "Aradia's extremely passive nature as a ghost makes her an easy target for this kind of overbearing attention." - {Hussie is commenting on aradia, not Maids, but the language is pretty strong}

Idea: Relating your Classpect Crafting to Classpecting Itself
Classpecting is a fun exercise, somewhere in between D&D building and Tarot reading, based on the 12 universal elements in Homestuck.
Like anyone spending too much time with it, I learned early on that anyone could be described by literally any combination of the classes and aspects... in some way.
People are too complex, and don't have narrative arcs to really drive these things in a specific direction.
I could see Breath in my impulsive, wayward patterns. I could see Time in my lifelong obsessions with nostalgic past and struggles with reality. Doom dominated my mentality almost as much as Hope did, in those existential adolescent years trying to make sense of life. Bound between too many people I saw Blood in myself, and a self in which to reflect Heart through acting. And a great Void, in that great abyss in which I couldn't really know myself with any clarity.
In the end, "Mage of Space" was something I got randomly rolled from a random number generator during an ARG.
Ironically, with my take that Space relates directly to the idea of fiction and stories itself—it ironically became the most fitting thing I arbitrarily slapped on myself. By being about fiction itself, my struggle to assign myself elements of this fictional setting was itself tied to the mythological title.
Tonight this entered my mind, and I thought—
What if a basis for assigning oneself a Classpect would come from thinking "What Class and Aspect ties most closely to my relationship to Classpecting myself to begin with?" What's the goal?
Somewhat filling in the shoes of a narrative arc in a meta-textual way.
Loving metanarrative stories about neverending stories, and wanting to connect with them and make them, is how Mage of Space is mine.

So how long till you drop the Deltarune Classpect expansion featuring the secret bosses? Haha just kidding. Unless... But anyway having not thought about classpects in like half a decade that post was a fun read.
i'm so glad you enjoyed it! ^^ it's nice to know there's a demographic for stuff like that still sksjsjk
the post in question for those out of loop here : x
and now.....
It appears my work is not yet done.
Jevil // Bard of Breath
So this is a bit irregular.
Since classpects are not only an allegory for a place in the narrative but also for character growth and progression, it can sometimes be hard to pin down a title of a character who had already gone through their arc. Jevil is someone like that - he's just hanging out. He fights you because it's fun and he's bored and won't you come outside? Let yourself be free?
Jevil screams Bard from miles away and his theme of freedom couldn't be more blatant but the problem I encountered was pinning down which aspect he was ghosting and which was his own. Bards usually experience a psychic break of sorts - we call it a crisis of aspect - that causes them to stop acting aggressively like they're bound to the opposite aspect. But the problem is - I would describe his encounter with 'a strange someone' as something exactly like that. So is he a Bard of Blood that is still in a way ghosting his opposite aspect, destroying the concept of imprisonment by calling being locked up as being truly free? Or is he a Bard of Breath that destroys through Breath by getting himself imprisoned and twisting the definition of freedom?
I decided to go with the latter because not only do I see his encounter with that strange someone being his aspect crisis as non-negotiable, this is not the only clue we have (even if it's the most crucial one). The way Bards operate before their aspect crisis is destroying their aspect through embracing the opposite one. Being a court jester is a very social role that I would say fits someone who is Bloodbound or ghosting the hell out of Blood well. Blood heroes are leaders, confidants and advisors and I think this fits well pre-crisis of Breath. He realized he's not truly free and never will be so he simply smashed his definition of freedom and remade it.
Spamton G. Spamton // Mage of Life (Kind of.)
So, hear me out. I promise it adds up.
Spamton has clear marks of someone Lifebound. This clingy attitude towards success, recognition and money is a very clear mark of that. Another one is how Life heroes are laughably susceptible to contact or persuasion by some kind of dark forces. His separation from other Addisons to become a big deal on his own has connections to a theme of rebellion, and his subsequent rise to the top of the social ladder is emblematic of the theme of authority, both of which being something that very up Life's alley. ...Also, he can literally heal. There's that.
Mages, as I've discussed in Noelle's case, experience the good and the bad of their aspect and can even experience harm because of it. And the cycle of Life says what rises up must fall down. In fact, I believe that what we're dealing with is Spamton's experience with the one who stopped calling him pulling him to the bottom and straight through, leading to him inverting to being the opposite of his title.
Spamton G. Spamton // ↺ Heir of Doom
Sometimes characters can experience a switch to the opposite title. That is called an inversion. It won't make sense for those who are reading this just for character deconstruction and have no knowledge of HS but think of how Rose acted like a Witch of Void, the inverse or her Seer of Light title, when she went grimdark. This isn't ghosting - it happens when a character actively rejects not only their aspect but their whole title.
This leaves Spamton acting in a way that is contrary to his nature - something isn't quite right. We get a feeling this isn't how he should operate but something happened and left him like this. For all intents and purposes, the narrative treats him like an Heir of Doom now, bringing about all things that have to do with being Doombound - this means he attracts the worst parts of the narrative, acts bitter and resentful, even fatalistic, is prone to visions of an awful end or unfortunate fate (this one I'm bringing up specifically because of his phone) and has a connection with nihilism and fatalism.
The inverse of his class being an Heir is also significant. Heirs inherit and embody their aspect, and Spamton does this two-fold - he serves as a cautionary tale of what happens when you hit rock bottom after trying to climb too high up, and, after the fight in the basement, becomes an omen to Kris that leaves a significant impact on them.
