Trilonyte - The Drowsy Pokémon! (#70)

Type: Rock/Bug Ability: Groggy Height: 1' 8" / 0.5 m Weight: 15.4 lbs / 7.0 kg

Trilonyte is a Fossil Pokémon, obtained by first retrieving and then reviving the Molt Fossil at the Clefton Museum of Natural History (but be careful - Trilonyte is exclusive to Pokémon Steel)! With what is known today about its behaviors, many scientists consider it to be a minor miracle that any Pokémon of this species survived to adulthood. Trilonyte sleeps a whopping 20 hours a day, and spends the rest of its time wishing it could be asleep. It is often seen using the protrusion on its tail as a pillow and dozing by the riverbank and relaxing under its soft, plush shell. It relies mostly on Bivoutel to protect it, though they hardly fair much better, and are usually asleep right beside them.

Both Trilonyte and its evolution have the Signature Ability Groggy. Every turn, a Pokémon with Groggy has a 1/12 chance of gaining the Sleep status. Groggy cannot trigger while the Pokémon is already asleep, but can while it has a different status effect.

If it manages to survive long enough, it become Bivoutel. The corresponding fossil Pokémon exclusive to Pokémon Flint is Ikivac, which you can read about here.

I think that this Pokémon is by and far the one I have struggled the most with designing so far. I knew I had to do an isotelus Pokémon (for the state fossil of Ohio), but much like how I was reticent to make a dunkleoestus Pokémon because of Relicanth and Dracovish/Arctovish, I was also feeling wary because it felt like Kabuto and Wimpod had the market cornered with trilobite-esque Pokémon. But, after a lot of work, I'm fairly happy with the result.

The spark of inspiration was twofold. The first part was this weird thought I had where I realized that the overlapping layers of a trilobite's shell kind of look like a sleeping bag. I actually designed Bivoutel first because of this idea, though it ended up not looking like a base stage Fossil Pokémon. The second was that there are two already-existing Pokémon with really good stats that have horrible Abilities: Archeops, a Fossil Pokémon, and Golisopod. I figured that if I'm going to make a guy that looks similar to Wimpod anyway, I might as well go whole hog. You can only get so wet, right? So, with Archen's ability lowering your stats and Wimpod's swapping you out involuntarily, I completed the trio of undesirable Pokémon effects by just having him fall asleep. And like those two, don't worry, its evolution is going to have, like... a 580 BST.

There's not too much to say about their design, other than I struggled with it for a weird amount of time. It's hard to tell, but they're supposed to have a striped pattern on their shell, like a security blanket. Maybe I should have gone for a baby blue color, like Linus's blanket? Oh well. Either way, just for fun, here's the drafting process for this little guy. You can see in the bottom of the first picture, I toyed with the idea of giving them a long, dress-like shell to more accurately reflect a blanket, and even a horn that looks like a nightcap at one point. In the second, you can see my first go at his pillow tail, which went less well than I would have wanted.

if i absolutely HAVE to state a fault of Rings of Power, it'd probably be that it's more catering towards people who already have some knowledge of Tolkien's legendarium outside of the Lord of the Rings. I watched the first episode before I read The Silmarillion, so I was pretty confused. After I read it though, it became extremely enjoyable.

But even then, I feel like you'd only be so clueless if you have only watched Peter Jackson's movies. I just wasn't paying a lot of attention while reading The Lord of the Rings.

That also can't be considered a fault, as my friend @cleftones so rightly pointed out, because it would motivate people to read Tolkien's other works as well, meaning it increases people in the fandom.

So all the purists, who think this show is a desecration of Tolkien's works, is it really? Or do you just not understand it, because your pea brain is unable to comprehend anything beyond Peter Jackson's movies? They are obviously a work of art, but imagine adapting something that isn't even written as a novel series, like The Lord of the Rings is, and creating a wonderful show out of it! Could you even write a synopsis for the events in Second Age Arda? I know I definitely could not.

That aside, does the idea of equality and representation not sound great to you? Elves don't just have to be white people, they can be brown, black, hispanic, everything! I personally, as a brown person, find that extremely exciting. If you don't, I think that is something you personally need to work on, don't you?

If even that isn't the problem, and you just dislike the changes they've made to the story, then you must be a real hot thing at parties. How fun. You can't comprehend people having different ideas? This isn't natural law, it's a story. Have you never read an alternate universe fanfic? Or one with OCs?

It takes skill to be able to create something that so perfectly ties in with an already existing world. It all takes skill. Could you pull off something like The Rings of Power cast, crew, writers, etc. are doing?

Thank youuu!! As Bronislava's self-proclaimed no.1 fan, I'm so devastated about the lack of canon and non-canon media of her. A lot of my headcanons and ideas of what Bronislava is like is based around the way she presents herself in the comics, since there's not much to go off of personality-wise within dialogue 🥀

BRONISLAVA HEADCANONS

— the youngest of Heavy's sisters, with Yana being a year older and Zhanna being 4 years older. She tries her best to appear sensible but can't help but be her lively, loud self around people she trusts. Out of her sisters, I'd say she's the most extroverted and optimistic, with Zhanna being very monotone and Yana being soft-spoken.

— VERY brutally honest, but not out of malice or anger - if she likes you, why would she lie to you? That dress is ugly and she won't let you go out and embarrass yourself like that! She gives you her true opinion with a smile and loves to give her own opinions on things

— speaking of her opinions, she has a lot of them, and she likes to drone on and on about them. She won't do this around new people (unless trying to awkwardly flirt with them). Could go on for hours about one topic. Tends to repeat the same point over and over on accident, especially when speaking English, since she finds it hard to find the words to express what she means.

— she has a passion for art, though she isn't exactly naturally inclined with the paint and pen - that's where her kick for photography started. She got her first camera after the death of the administrator and hasn't put it down since.

— A very lively and fun person who enjoys including people in her work and discussions. Quite a touchy person aswell, a pat on the shoulder to get your attention, shaking to emphasise a point, etc. She communicates with her body, throwing her hands around whilst talking.

— gets crushes quickly, but has a hard time shaking them off (happened with Sniper). She heard Mischa talk about him briefly and instantly had a thing for him, but meeting him in person? Life changing. Insane. She had to get her hands on that man or she'd DIE.

— big fan of travelling, mainly for the opportunities for photography, but she also loves to go to art museums and galleries. Never stays in them too long, but loves to have a walk around, pointing at things and acting like she's a true art connoisseur

— BIG fan of doo-wop music. She loves doo-wop. That's it. Think;

And;

— she's an ENFJ - empathetic, authentic, charismatic, outspoken and idealistic. She's very attuned to others and that's where her brutal honesty comes in, she feels as if she needs to tell others what they can't see in themselves to help them.

A/N - this is a little cheesy, I won't lie. sorry for the long wait!

You giggled, leaning back to escape the feathery kisses Jack peppered across your face. His grip on your waist was secure, preventing you from squirming in his hold. A few wisps of dark hair had escaped his perfectly combed hairstyle, you resisted the urge to tenderly brush them pack into place. He looked as if he had walked straight off set and into your shared living room, wearing a chestnut colored two piece suit and black buffed dress shoes that shined brighter than New York’s city lights. You had half a mind to believe this was a dream, that he was still at the studio, tirelessly smiling into the black lens of a camera. 

The faint bitter smell of whisky that invaded your nose as his lips ghosted over your cheek were a dead giveaway though. He was here with you, and currently drunk. 

“C’mon darling, dance with me,” he urged, beginning to pull you towards him. A record spun on the turntable, the melodic harmonies of The Cleftones filling the large space.

You firmly placed your hands on his chest, pushing him back.

“It is one in the morning, and you’re drunk,” you chided, trying to fight back the growing smile on your rouged lips. 

Jack chuckled, his fingers curling into the fabric of your dress. “Now what does that have to do with anything?” 

“I just don’t want to see you fall on your ass.” 

He grinned, glassy eyed as he leaned forward, like a flower towards sunlight. Jack always seemed to find himself bending towards you, no matter if there was a height difference or not. Something had tethered itself around his soul, forever pulling him in your general direction. 

His grip on your hips tightened, bunching the soft fabric of your dress in his palms. He thought about how pretty you looked earlier tonight, waltzing around the house. The edges of the dress swishing around your bare calves, moving with you. There were times he would playfully pull you down in his lap, if only to feel the soft material that complemented your body. He gazed at you now, admiring the lamp's soft glow that splashed over your features like the morning sun. His fingers began to tremble, as the warm sight of you squeezed around his heart. 

Devotion was too small of a word, he decided, for what he felt.

The Cleftones' voices faded off, before their next song “Heart and Soul” began to spill from the speakers. If there was one thing Jack learned from being in show business, it is when to seize an opportunity. 

Jack took your hand in his, and gently placed a kiss on your knuckles, lingering a second longer than needed. 

“I’m very light on my feet, sweetheart,” he said, winking at your flushed face. 

With not even a moment to react, he spun you around in time to the music. 

A sudden gasp left your lips, as Jack pulled you back to him. His laughter rang out, drowning out the vocalist. Your heart thudded in your chest, watching as his black coal eyes stayed fixated on you. 

“You’re not a bad dancer yourself,’ he joked, pressing his palm on the flat of your back. You rolled your eyes, letting your head fall on his shoulder as he gently swayed with you. The rich, earthy scent of his cologne washed over you, creating a buzz in your chest at the reminder that he was home. Your eyes fluttered shut, as the music cocooned your swaying forms. 

“You’re going to keep me up all night, Mr Delroy,” you said, smiling to yourself. 

He hummed, nudging his nose against the side of your head, inhaling the sweet fragrance of your hairspray. 

“Oh I plan to, darling.” 

The night carried on, as Jack’s hand wandered over your body, tracing the seams and lines of your dress. Lost in the sensation known as you.

By the way, part of what Crystal & Charles bond over in the comics is that Crystal's friends have been dying on her, so she's happy to meet ghost Charles. . . who can't die on her.

Charles is happy to meet a living girl who's alive and can see him.

But Crystal doesn't have memories in the show about stuff. . . there was no David the demon in the comics. . .

It's like their hearts remember their comic counterparts, but their minds forget. But she still sees his soul and he's in love with her.

Ikivak - The Suction Pokémon! (#68)

Type: Rock/Ground Abilities: Earth Eater (Sand Veil) Height: 3' 3" / 1.0 m Weight: 69.4 lbs / 31.5 kg

Ikivak is a Fossil Pokémon, obtained by first retrieving and then reviving the Bristle Fossil at the Clefton Museum of Natural History (but be careful - Ikivak is exclusive to Pokémon Flint)! A Pokémon from prehistoric times, Ikivak roamed the Goodmorn region when it was mostly desert. Though it resembles a fish, scientists have suggested that it is, instead, a distant relative to lizards today.

Ikivak were solitary Pokémon and would propel themselves through the sand using their frontmost flippers with their mouth open and lower jaw in the sand. They would then suck in the sand, letting smaller ancient Bug-type Pokémon get caught in its grill, and the sand itself sucked through the grill and blown out of the many holes in its back. A single Ikivak can sift through up to 15,000 gallons (or 55,000 liters) of sand in a single day!

When it becomes strong enough, it becomes the mighty Vortitan. The corresponding fossil Pokémon exclusive to Pokémon Steel is Trilonyte, which you can read about here.

So, Ohio has two state fossils. The first one is the official state fossil, and it's Isoltelus maximus, a type of giant trilobite that Trilonyte gets its inspiration from. The other is the official state fish fossil, which seems like a ridiculous thing for a state to have, but I digress, and that is the Dunkleoestus maximus.

As badass as the dunkleoestus is, I think it's a little played out. First, there are dozens of people much more artistically inclined than me who have made dunkleoestus Pokémon, and second, the game already has that covered with Dracovish and Relicanth. I don't think that we need another rock-plated fish in the games.

So, I took things from a slightly different angle. Yes, the dunkleoestus is the state fish fossil, but there's also at the Clefton -sorry, Cleveland Museum of Natural History the fossil of a locally-discovered titanichthys.

While it looks scary, it's nowhere near as fearsome as the dunkleoestus. These guys had big mouths, yes, but they were filter feeders, like whales. They would just swim around with their mouths wide open and let whatever was directly in front of it get sucked right on in. They didn't have a baleen, as far as I'm aware, but then, they didn't swim through sand either.

Below I've included some earlier drafts I made of this guy. On the left is my original drawing of them, which is a front on view that I'm not sure if I'm keen on. On the right is a version which gave them a pickaxe-like tail as a nod to their typing, but ultimately I went with something closer to my original design.

Ra-Q - The Musicologist Pokémon! (#024)

Type: Rock/Steel Ability: Playback/Punk Rock (Levitate) Height: 3'11" / 1.2 m Weight: 540.1 lbs / 245.0 kg

Ra-Q is not know to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Ra-Q is one of the most ancient Pokémon in the world, with records of its existence going back 20,000 years. It is known as "the musicologist Pokémon" for its remarkable ability to memorize music. It is said that Ra-Q can remember and replay over 3,000 songs, and recall a song perfectly after 75 years. For this reason, it is often found in concert venues and museums. The ancient humans of the Goodmorn region were inspired by Ra-Q's natural markings to create the musical notation system.

Ra-Q has the Signature Ability "Playback". Every time Ra-Q uses a sound-based move, the Power of its next sound-based move is increased by 5 Power. If the next move the Pokémon chooses is not sound-based, the added Power is reset to zero. This effect is cumulative throughout the entire battle, maxing out at a bonus 25 Power.

This Pokémon is based on one of the more unique landmarks of the state of Ohio, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Meaning, yes, of course, it's called that because we will, we will Ra-Q. (In addition to the "Ra" angle because of the whole pyramid thing.)

If I was more clever, when I was drawing it, I would have had the cross-hatching pattern that the actual building has on the Pokémon. Oh well. Maybe I'll put it in the HG/SS or BD/SP version of the game ;)

I don't have so much to say about this one, to be honest. I will say that I gave it Levitate as a Hidden Ability even though it doesn't jive with the sound-based abilities because I didn't like its 4x weakness to Ground types. That always bugged me about Magnezone. Like, he's levitating, what do you mean he doesn't have Levitation? Also, initially its first ability was going to be Punk Rock and its second ability would be Soundproof, but I thought Soundproof wouldn't make much sense with its lore, and while Punk Rock is a very fitting ability, but there's only one Steel-type sound-based move, and it's a Status move, so... not getting a lot of utility out of it, there. So, that's how Playback was born! I figured that if it can't get a STAB bonus on any sound-based moves, at least it can make Chatter have 90 Power.

(I guess I could have given it a Signature Move instead of a Signature Ability that's a Rock/Steel sound-based, but also... eh. In my head, Ra-Q is a Pokémon kinda like Komala or Salazzle, where it's not a bad Pokémon, but it's just an Okay Pokémon given a weird ability for the hell of it.)
