The Fallout

You didn’t know how long you stood there after Bucky left.Long enough for the sun to start setting. Long enough for the battlefield to feel like a graveyard. Long enough for someone to find you.

“Hey.”

Steve.

You barely blinked as he stepped up beside you, his gaze following the path Bucky had walked away from.

“You wanna tell me what happened?” His voice was calm. Gentle, as always

You didn’t answer.

Didn’t move.

Didn’t breathe.

Steve sighed. “I saw him leave.” He hesitated. “He’s not coming back, is he?”. Your jaw clenched.You didn’t trust yourself to speak.

Because if you did, you would break.

Steve exhaled sharply. “Damn it, Buck.” There was anger in his voice now.anger and frustration, but also deep sadness.

“He said he needs to find himself,” you finally whispered.

Steve’s eyes snapped to you.

Your throat burned. “Said he needs time. That he can’t do this. Not yet.”

Steve ran a hand over his face, his entire body tensing. “That stupid son of a—” He stopped himself, exhaling through his nose. “I’m gonna kill him.”

You let out a sharp, humorless laugh. “Language cap”

Steve shook his head. “After everything.. he just walks away?”. You swallowed hard. “Yeah.” Silence stretched between you.

Then—

“Does Tony know?”

Your heart stuttered.

Fuck.

…

The compound was too bright. Too alive. Too full of people celebrating their victory.

It made you sick

You walked past them in a daze, ignoring the cheers, the relieved voices, the embraces of thos who returned to life. None of it felt real

Because he’s not here .

He was supposed to be here.

Bucky supposed to be here.

You found Tony in the conference room with Nat, Clint, and Bruce. He looked up the second you stepped inside.

“Hey, sweetheart-“, His expression shifted the moment he saw your face. His jaw tightened. “What happened?”

You opened your mouth.But the words didn’t come. Instead—your chest caved. Your breath stuttered.

And then—

You broke.

A sob tore from your throat as you completely break-down.

Tony was there before you hit the ground. Strong arms caught you, pulling you into his chest, cradling you like he used to when you were small.

“Oh god,” he breathed, his voice wrecked. “What the hell happened?”

Your fingers curled into his shirt, your body shaking violently.

“He left,” you choked. “He fucking left.”

Tony froze.

The room went silent.

And then—

“Are you fucking kidding me?!”

Tony’s voice thundered through the room, filled with fury and disbelief. He pulled back just enough to look at you, his hands framing your face. His eyes were burning.

“After everything?” His breath was sharp. You squeezed your eyes shut.

Tony swore under his breath.

Nat was standing now, arms crossed, her face unreadablebut her knuckles were white. Clint looked like he wanted to put his fist through a wall. Bruce muttered something vicious under his breath.

Nobody spoke for a long moment.

Then Tony exhaled sharply, pulling you back into his chest.

“Okay,” he murmured, his voice gentler now. “Okay. We’re gonna deal with this. You’re gonna be okay, kid.”

You wanted to believe him.

You really did.

But deep down, you weren’t sure you ever would be. Because this is the moment that you knew , you will be completely miserable.

……

You stopped sleeping.

At first, it was just a few restless nights. The nightmares kept you awake, memories of dust slipping through your fingers, of blue eyes filled with regret as he walked away.

Then, you stopped eating. Nothing tasted right. Nothing felt real. You trained until your body collapsed. Until your hands bled. Until you couldn’t think anymore.

But it wasn’t enough.

Nothing was ever enough.

You tried to fill the void with missions. You threw yourself into the field with reckless abandon, taking risks that made even Natasha and Steve hesitate. You wanted the pain. Welcomed it. Because pain meant you could still feel something.

But eventually, even that stopped working.

And one night—

One night, it all caught up to you.

You were in the training room, alone, your fists slamming into the punching bag over and over again. You had been at it for hours. Maybe days. You weren’t sure anymore.

Your knuckles were raw, skin split open, blood staining the bag—but you didn’t stop.

You couldn’t stop.

Because the second you did, the silence would come. The thoughts. The realization that he was gone, and he had chosen to be.

Your vision blurred.

Your breath hitched.

Then—

“That’s enough.”

The voice was sharp. Commanding.

You froze.

Tony was standing at the entrance, his face pale.

His eyes swept over you, taking in your trembling body, your bloody hands, the dark circles under your eyes. His expression hardened.

“Come on,” he said. “You’re done.”

You swallowed. “I’m not.”

“Yes, you are.”

You clenched your jaw. “I can handle it.”

Tony’s eyes burned. “No. You can’t.”

You flinched.

He sighed, stepping closer. His voice softened. “Kid… you’re killing yourself.”

You shook your head. “I’m fine.”

“You’re not.” He exhaled. “You’re killing yourself over him.”

The words hit.

Your breath caught in your throat. Then something inside you snapped. Once again, for the same reason.

“What the fuck else am I supposed to do?”

Tony stilled.

Your vision blurred, rage and grief twisting in your chest, clawing at your throat.

“I lost him,” you whispered. “I lost him once. And I survived. Barely. Then I got him back,and he left me again.” Your voice broke. “I can’t,I can’t do this again, Dad. I can’t survive it again.”

“The last time he’s gone , he didnt- he cant choose . He didnt have a choice . But this time? He did choose it himself. He choose to left . Me.”

Tony’s face was unreadable.

Then—slowly, carefully—he reached for you.

And the second his arms wrapped around you—

You collapsed.

A sob ripped from your chest, violent and raw, and Tony held you through it. He didn’t say anything. Didn’t tell you it would be okay. Didn’t try to fix it.

Because there was nothing to fix. You were broken.

And that night—Tony made a choice.

You weren’t surprised when he brought it up. You were in the kitchen the next morning, staring blankly at a cup of coffee you hadn’t touched.

Tony sat across from you. He didn’t speak for a long time.

Then—

“You need to leave.” You flinched. Your grip tightened around the mug. “What?”. Tony exhaled. “You need time. Away from all of this.” His voice was careful. Measured. “Go somewhere. Anywhere. Take a break.”

You stared at him. “You’re sending me away?” His eyes softened. “I’m saving you.”

Your throat burned.

“I—” Your voice wavered. You shook your head. “I don’t know how to exist without this.”

“I know,” Tony said. “That’s the problem.”

Silence.

You swallowed hard.

Then—quietly, hesitantly—you asked:

“Where should I go?”

Tony sighed. “Wherever the hell you want, sweetheart.” He reached into his pocket, tossing you a small, black card. “Your name’s on every account I own. Go find yourself.”

Your fingers curled around the card. Your chest ached. But deep down— You knew he was right.

Because if you stayed? You wouldn’t survive it.

And for the first time in years , you hoping for something different.

Not for Bucky to come back , but for you to move on.

The merchant, a wiry man with a scar running down his jaw, blinked at him, clearly torn between skepticism and curiosity. “Legendary, huh? What’s your name, then?”

Deacon didn’t miss a beat. “Call me Clint. Clint Westwood.” He thumbed over his shoulder, nodding toward Nora, who was standing a few paces behind him, arms crossed and one eyebrow quirked. “And that’s my partner, the infamous… Daisy Boomsticks.”

After playing Fallout 1 and comparing it with New Vegas, the conclusion that they're both very different games is obvious, but one thing I'd lile to draw attention to is how Fallout 1 integrates a less combat oriented character better than New Vegas, at least as far as the "main story" goes.

Playing Fallout 1, I did the same as I did on New Vegas, but with much better results, thanks to two things: no action elements and how Charisma works in Fallout 1.

I tried creating in both games a character who is not super physically fit and solves most problems with diplomacy, cunning or inteligence, such as negotiating, fixing things and so forth. Not strictly a pacifist, but a scientist, rather. And thus, his skills in combat pale to dedicated fighters.

In New Vegas, charisma allows your companions to deal more damage, which is nice, but it being an action RPG, even when my character has a pitiful 20 gun stat, I feel my accuracy and FPS skills outperform much more my stats, to the point where despite barely putting points in it, I still feel like I'm god damn Clint Eastwood.

Comparing this with fallout 1, where not having enough on the stat was enough to make your turns be wasted and you dying and a non combat character was, actually, weak in combat.

You amp that up with Charisma dictating how many companions you can have and having Ian so close to the starting point and him CLEARLY outperforming you in combat, you really feel HE'S a seasoned adventurer.

New Vegas' action combat makes pitiful combat stats not matter as much as your gunplay prowess. Another problem which is further increased by bethesda's engine's "pause midcombat, scarf 7 steaks and put 8 stimpacks before resuming combat" strategy still ruling supreme makes combat more skill based than character based. Even hardcore mode doesn't negate this enough. The problem lies on the pausing with no loss of momentum, compared to spending 4 AP to open your menu in Fallout 1. I'd argue that it should be 4 AP to do something on the menu to precent stimpack spam there, but it's already better than Modern fallout in any case.

In any case. I still love New vegas. But it invites much more to be a resourceful cowboy than someone non combative.

For real, though. Getting to snipe someone just fine with a revolver while still having both arms broken felt a little too much for me.

(1) Star Wars: I love so much Star Wars that to split it into subfandoms would make this post too long. I think it’s easiest to say this: I prefer Clone Wars, Rebels, Rogue One/Andor, anything about Jon Antilles, anything about Hevy & the Domino Squad, anything Ahsoka Tano, Mandalorian culture (including Din & Grogu content!), and Mando'a as a language.

My main ships are: Cody/Obi-Wan, Kallus/Zeb, Hevy/anyone (consensual), Finn/Poe or Finn/Poe/Rey, blackkat rarepairs (mainly Jon Antilles/anyone), Jon Antilles & Fay (platonic), Waxer/Boil, Fives/Echo, Kanan/Hera, Quinlan/Fox(/Jon), Quinlan/Obi-Wan(/Cody), & Fox/Bail/Breha [also Clone OC ships!!] My favorite characters are: Hevy, Fox, Cody, Obi-Wan, Ahsoka, Leia, Poe, Fives, Luke, Jon Antilles, Fay (Legends)

(2) Batfam/DC: I can be picky and yet not? Basically, I just prefer no inner-Batfam fics of the boys because I truly view them as brothers. Jason is my boy forever & always. My favorite ships are Jason Todd/Roy Harper(/Kori), Dick Grayson/Wally West, Harley/Ivy, Tim Drake/Kon, Tim/Bernard, Tim/Kon/Bernard, and Wally/Artemis from Young Justice. I am pretty knowledgeable about comics, too, and I keep up with the current runs of: Poison Ivy, Gotham City Sirens, & Red Hood: The Hill. This is the fandom that I specifically am obsessed with found family in. – I love exploring Alfred being the boys’ Grandpa and Bruce’s complex dadhood!

Honorable mention here to Bucky Barnes/Clint Barton/Jason Todd as a ship I love. This is why I put MCU in my signup request, as DC/Marvel crossovers are [chef's kiss] to me.

(3) DPxDC: I have been tentatively eyeing this crossover since last year's Pod-O-Ween but I was fully flung into it during last year's summer swap. It got me writing again! This fandom is so rich with potential regarding like... when you fling them into one another's timelines, meaning my ships go EVERYWHERE. Take one of my DC ships and put a character from Danny Phantom in it and you will probably find a ship I like. But I really love: Tim Drake/Danny Fenton, Danny Fenton/Jason Todd(/Roy Harper), Steph Brown/(Cass/)Sam Manson, Cassandra Cain/Sam Manson, Jazz Fenton/Barbara Gordon. I've podficced some Danny/Dick, too!! Like I said, it really depends when you cross the timelines over. As always, I will EAT UP genfic for this fandom!! I REALLY love the "demon twins" AUs, which are Danny & Damian as twins (or Danny as one of the Damian clones). So, yes... I love this so much.

(4) A RARE ASK: I am super into both Dragon Age & Mass Effect. The former is much easier to find fandom for and there are a lot of fics with blanket permission statements. For Dragon Age, DA:O is my favorite (especially Alistair) or any sort of Hawke!centric fics. But in April 2024 I became re-obsessed with Mass Effect & it has continued. My rare ask is for Mass Effect fics - specifically Shep/Garrus or Shep/Liara (or them as a triad). Or gen fic!! But I feel like I am on an island here lol

10. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Previous Rank: 29 (Available on: Steam) Ah, Vice City. One of the greatest GTA games with a killer soundtrack and a great story, regardless of how you play it... though do try to get the original version, the Definitive Edition is alright, but some people may not like its changes.

9. Quake Previous Rank: 11 (Available on: Steam, GOG) Quake was my first ever first-person shooter, and it's still fun today, especially with that Nightdive remaster. It's quite brown (and blue) but it helps the atmosphere of the game, and Trent Reznor's soundtrack works in the world of Quake.

8. Undertale Previous Rank: 10 (Available on: Steam, GOG) Undertale is still a classic, you guys know this. If you've never played it... Mercy is always an option, and that's all I'm going to say on that. And if you're wondering why Deltarune's not on the list, it's because all we have are episodes 1 and 2 and I'd really like to have more before I add it to the list.

7. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Previous Rank: 23 (Available on: Steam) San Andreas was the first GTA I ever 100%-ed. It's a great adventure, and just a great time. Again, try to get the original version, but the Definitive Edition is alright.

6. RollerCoaster Tycoon Previous Rank: 8 (Available on: Steam, GOG) RollerCoaster Tycoon is one of the most accessible and enjoyable theme park sims, even more than Theme Park, which didn't make the cut this time. RCT is as close to perfect as you can get for a theme park sim.

5. Fallout: New Vegas Previous Rank: 4 (Available on: Steam, GOG) Still my favorite of the Bethesda-styled Fallout games, I gotta say. I don't play it as much right now, but I do go back on occasion.

4. DOOM II: Hell on Earth Previous Rank: 5 (Available on: Steam, GOG) This game is almost perfect, but a few of the maps and enemies can be annoying. It's what most people think of when they think “Classic DOOM.”

3. Saints Row 2 Previous Rank: 3 (Available on: Steam, GOG) Still the top dog of the Saints Row series. I'm sad that the PC patch got scuttlebutted when Volition shut down, but it's still a great time.

2. Mass Effect: Legendary Edition Previous Rank: 12 (Available on: Steam, EA) Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is the definitive way to play the original trilogy, and I love it. Definitely get it if you like third person shooters with RPG elements. It's gone up a few spots, mainly because of the fixes EA did.

1. You Don't Know Jack Volume 4: The Ride Previous Rank: 1 (Available on: Steam, Jackbox) You saw this coming. It's my favorite game of all time. It's like Clint from LGR with Duke Nukem 3D. This should not come as a surprise.

7: A fic of yours you think is underrated? or be taken out alive, the little one-off from the main fallout 4 series where carly goes to kill a courser by herself and it goes. about as well as can be expected.

I'm genuinely Very proud of that one, the fight turned out really good, the aftermath has my preferred levels of "yeah you have very impressive drugs to help with healing but you still lost So Much Blood", I just love Carly a lot and it was really fun to let her shine for a while. A wonderful time of giving my girl some fresh new trauma!

(also it's underrated because the books themselves are underrated but the most recent thing I posted is in a fandom with 2 works and is currently sporting 3 whole hits and please read the devoured worlds so you may understand my love for fletcher demarco and my need to write about him)

15: What are some of your favorite tropes to write? Hurt/comfort is always a top one for me, usually with some emphasis on the hurt part. I'm a huge sucker for enemies-to-lovers, and I do really love like. people who go through shitty things and sometimes the resulting character development just makes them Worse.

18: Is there some headcanon you've included in more than one fic? Back when I wrote Marvel, I had a very firm set of headcanons for Clint -- his being extremely farsighted was a big one, he was always wearing contacts when not actively on a job. Kinda similarly with all my Helix fics, we got very little on Sergio's actual backstory so I just have assigned one to him that will follow him through anything I write. Also Deacon is a sniper and that will be in every fo4 piece I make, I got Vagued about for that headcanon way back when the game first came out and it remains really funny to me and also increases my determination that the man is a sniper
