The Volturi have given them a year to turn Bella and time is closing in, and the newborn vampire army that’s been rising in the area is only drawing more attention from the Volturi. More wolves are turning almost weekly, and the pack and Cullens must figure out a way to work together to ensure their home stays protected.

Your posts and essays have inspired me to do my own digging into the MtG lore. Do you have any recommendations on where a fledgling Vorthos should start? Is it better to pick a character and trace their journey through the stories? Or should I try to go as far back as possible to start with some of the very first stories and work my way chronologically?

I am SO GLAD YOU ASKED!! I've been waiting for an ask like this.

You guys probably don't know this, but I'm a co-admin on MTGLore.com, the BEST resource for any fan who wants to get into Magic lore. It's basically like Scryfall but for Magic Story.

For fans new to Magic Story, we have a convenient "Where to start" page. This can give you some direction for where to start, depending on what you're interested in.

There's A LOT of Magic Story out there, so I wouldn't recommend starting from the very beginning to literally anyone. Personally, when I got into Magic Story, I also took the "comic book" approach (picking one favorite character and only reading all their stories), and then I went back and read all the other ones.

To find the stories with your favorite character, you can use our VERY robust search tool. You can search by characters, authors, time period, setting, type of article, set/expansion, etc etc. It'll list all the results with most recent at the top and oldest at the bottom.

But if your favorite character is Gideon, Jace, Liliana, Chandra, or Nissa; Origins is a perfect place to start. That's where the modern era of Magic Story really starts, with the Gatewatch arc. If you want to read starting there, we have a very cool "Origins to Present" page, which is a complete timeline of all the Magic Story web fiction from Origins onward.

A lot of those characters have stories from before Origins, too. So I think it's also worth it to use the search tool to go back and find those too!

Exploring Cyberpunk

Cyberpunk is a very unique genre, which is why so many people are both attracted to it and stumped when attempting to develop plots within an unknown world. Think of Black Mirror created by Charlie Brooker (TV show), Blade Runner written by Philip K. Dick (a movie based on the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, a classic Cyberpunk novel), Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan (modern Cyberpunk novel), etc. -- each of these were incredibly influential in their own right, but they all also build their worlds gradually while having a single easy-to-explain concept that can spawn an entire universe. To be more specific, each story establishes an issue created by an advanced society ignorantly abusing technology, then allow their characters to explore that problem and try to find a solution in a manner that isn't explicitly black or white for society as a whole, but every shade of grey.

For Black Mirror, each episode anthologically builds upon a high-tech future within the same universe and explores how its characters interact with problems created by new pieces of said technology, both good and bad.

For Blade Runner, the story establishes that androids seem to be malfunctioning, but the bounty hunter charged with hunting them down discovers that the true issue lies in society's understanding of what it means to be human.

For Altered Carbon, the novel explores the issue derived from the obscene length of time it would take for humans to travel between planets stretched across the universe, then dives into more detail regarding how a solution has been abused.

How to Construct a Cyberpunk Concept

What we'd recommend is to start by asking the right questions and looking in the right places. Black Mirror takes its inspiration from a variety of technology, both new and old; Blade Runner explores the idea of AI and androids during the 80's when robotics was on the forefront of innovation; Altered Carbon took note of our increasing ability to travel in an interstellar fashion, then posed a simple question regarding the limits of humanity (specifically, time).

This may sound strange, but the best thing you can do is seek out trends online and scientific journals about new breakthroughs, then ask questions about what may go wrong. For example, an old post we featured here on AUideas that has since been removed from ~2017 because it's in the process of being developed into a script (sorry guys, our bad!) called Dreamscape Co. uses this exact method. When the prompt was made, Admin M was in the process of reading a scientific journal about how neurologists had been able to project a person's thoughts into an image. Although the technology was rudimentary at the time, Admin M posed the question "if dreams can be viewed, what if dreams can be watched in real time with a high quality image? What if they could be immersive? What would that industry look like? Who would pay how much to see a certain person's dreams?" This spun out into a sweeping cyberpunk mini-series, yet came from a simple news article.

Some Cyberpunk Inspiration

When performing a quick search, some amazing ideas seemed to jump out from technology news headlines these past couple weeks alone:

Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal (FLC) Technology Being Used in 3D Displays

Unlike holograms, this technology uses liquid crystals that exhibit spontaneous polarization, meaning their orientation can be influenced by an electric field. They're high-speed, low-power, and have innumerable applications in the future. So, what could go wrong?

How could this technology impact the medical field? Although this may not be possible, consider what could occur if FLCs were injected into human bodies and influenced by electric fields to perform different tasks and functions, such as replacing an organ, attacking cancer cells, etc. How could such a technology be abused or go wrong? How many could die with a simple pulse, like an EMP?

Real-Life Freeze Ray Technology Created for the US Airforce

This technology hasn't been developed to be used as weaponry, but instead to replace large amounts of coolant that must be used on space and air crafts to prevent the machinery from overheating (coolant is heavy and can reduce efficiency yet is absolutely necessary due to the fact that space is a vacuum and therefore does not cool heat like air would on Earth). This "freeze ray" technology utilizes plasma's strange property that seems to break the second law of thermodynamics: it chills down when touching another object before heating up, which experts have proposed is because it vaporizes the ultra-thin layer of carbon and water on an object upon contact, similar to how water evaporates off your skin when stepping out of a pool. The question must be asked: how could such technology be used for not just utilitarian means, but outside of the Airforce's intentions?

Perhaps the technology could be manipulated and over-chill an aircraft, or otherwise damage internal engineering.

Consider its potential applications here on Earth: what could benefit from being chilled with something light-weight and low-power? How could it be integrated into homes? What could be disastrously destroyed with such technology?

Breakthrough in Enhanced Geothermal Systems Technology May Completely Replace Carbon Energy Sources

Google and Fervo have successfully developed geothermal technology that has increased its efficiency and broke records by changing existing rock formations in the Earth's crust. For a natural geothermal energy system to produce electricity, it has to have the right amount of heat, fluid, and rock permeability -- these Goldilocks conditions can be difficult to find 'in the wild'. However, this new Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) targets the most-easily found aspect (rocks with high heat) then creates the necessary permeability artificially by drilling to the intended rock formation and injecting fluid to create fractures in the rock, achieving the necessary Goldilocks conditions. Sure, this may be carbon-free energy, but what would happen if this were employed on a mass scale?

When energy is prioritized by a high-tech society over food and water, how could citizens gain access to those resources?

What long-term effects could such a system have on the Earth as a whole? Could the ground become unstable? Maybe earthquakes crumble city after city? Maybe the entire Earth's crust loses its integrity and disintegrates, pulling only a lucky few deep underground and forcing them to survive off the left over fluid injected into the Earth's crust and whatever they can find.

Closing Thoughts

As you can see from above, there's a crazy amount of inspiration that can be drawn from current technology events. What's important to remember is that yes, we've been talking about complicated technology, but only you have to understand how it functions in your universe down to the molecule, not your audience. Deep technology topics can be dry to a certain extent, and over-explaining your world can be damaging to your story. Explanations regarding how technology works in each of the stories we discussed is limited for that same reason (Black Mirror's overarching concepts, specifics about how Blade Runner's Replicant technology are rarely discussed, etc.). Leave some mystery surrounding how your cyberpunk world functions and allow how your characters room to breathe and interact with that world -- it can speak for itself. Your audience may first love the idea behind your story, but what they'll remember and relate to is how your protagonists and antagonists suffer and prevail within your universe.

I know it's not feasible or easy to prove or disprove, but I wonder if name recognition has an effect on voting results at all. If the photos had no name associated (and obv people can still do an image search - but let's assume a co-operative electorate willing to participate in an experiment), would the same hot people go through? What do you think?

I can think of few things funnier than running a hot people blog with no pictures of hot people on it, but to get to your actual question—yes, I think name recognition definitely plays a part; I know in other tournaments I sometimes pick the one I know if I'm not familiar with both options, which is not proper voting behavior really but hey, what are you going to do. All the better to see a lesser known name triumphing in several of these polls!

give me the best piece of rp advice you’d give your beginner rp self in hindsight

- check the guidebook and use the search function on discord before you ask a question; admins don't mind answering but it gets annoying when the info is easy to find if you look first.

- base your characters on more than one dynamic, especially more than a ship! people flake or leave for personal reasons all the time, and if you enjoy your character outside of their (1) one dynamic, you'll have a lot more fun keeping them around and developing them further. plus, it makes it easier to reply consistently when you know your char well.

- don't compare your writing to anyone else's – for better or worse. it's fine if someone's writing isn't for you, but the rpc has people from all walks of life, foreigners, academics, etc, and comparison truly is the thief of joy.

- make sure your post has something for the other person to respond to instead of just rehashing the post befofe in different words/perspective. okay, x did this. what is ur char doing in response? how do they feel about it? what's their internal monologue like?

- on the topic of dynamics again, you don't need to have threads for every single connection of your char's, but it does help to have a variety of them headcanoned. think about your life- who are your friends, co workers, exes, second cousins, etc? you have a ton of connects that you don't often interact with, but still helped shape some aspect of your life, amd the same concept applies to chars.

- have fun and don't take things too seriously. ultimately this is meant to be a hobby, and taking things personally will ruin it for you and probs the people around you too. anxiety lies, don't let it convince you.

It's actually pretty easy for everyone to figure out who Mr. L is working with and why they took those four Avatars specifically thanks to the fact that GG has actually been playing "Connected Cosmos: The Game" and was looking forward to the new crossover update (her name is gamer girl, this is pretty much her Whole Thing, remember?). Of course, there's the issue that they can't just go into any old copy of the game and grab them once the update comes out, since it wouldn't be their version of them, so they have to find and break into the CCC's systems and the developer server, which is... shockingly well-hidden considering Jayin couldn't possibly know how to hide it from a Digital World perspective. Still, this is the internet, people talk, somebody's bound to know where it is. It also helps that, thanks to Timmy being so deeply entrenched in things and Alyssa obviously wanting to help when she finds out what's going on, the Grid is fully on board with helping the Admins and Meme Alliance in this, and Alyssa in particular has a lot of useful information to contribute as a co-founder and former employee of the company.

And of course there's plenty of friends they can call on from all over the 'net and beyond. Thus, the plan goes like this:

During prep we have three teams

Team one will scour the Digital Multiverse in search of an entry point to the Connected Cosmos Company Servers. Overseer and Abyssal will take point on this since Overseer has more knowledge of the modern DM's layout and cultures than just about anyone else and he already has Abyssal's contact info. The Grid will also be heavily involved in this part due to their extensive spy network.

Team two will learn all the ins and outs of Connected Cosmos: The Game so that when things get going the infiltration teams will have as much information as possible. Gamer Girl and the kids will be in charge of this since GG has a big head-start thanks to already playing it on her own time and the kids wanted to help and this was a relatively safe option for those of them who wouldn't have been as much help during the big fight.

Team three will be more general preparations. Getting the Codeship Fleet up and running, finding the cure for the Nintendo Firewall Virus plaguing the stolen Avatars, recruiting allies, coming up with the actual attack plan, etc. This will mainly be in the hands of the Avatars and the Meme Alliance.

Also, they need to transfer the memes refugees in Equestria to a server that can actually support a Meme Cycle as soon as possible, especially the Dead Memes. Discord is keeping them from becoming Corrupted somehow but whatever he's doing isn't sustainable in the long term, especially since it technically counts as actively preventing chaos and is thus taking a toll on him.

In the meantime, Jayin notices Tama is in the game when she's supposed to have been dead for years in-universe, but shrugs it off and figures she can just stick her in Devos as a random NPC, let the fans speculate, then come up with a quest involving her and put it in one of the smaller updates later down the line (it's an MMO, the players'll eat that shit up).

While Jayin's convinced she's already won (since her inability to see most Digital Beings as people means she's only considering Glitch Productions' possible reaction to this) Mr. L has enough experience both as part of Luigi and as the Crew's enemy to know this is far from over, so he slips through one of the leftover cracks between dimensions and makes a deal with someone those Junior Heroes would never expect...

Once things actually kick off, this is the plan:

The fleet, led by Peach and made up of everyone and everything they've got that can withstand Code Space, will battle the CCC's outer defenses (Twilight monsters, Brobots of every type, the CCC's own Code-level beings, and Mr. L's surprise guest who I'll be introducing in an actual ficlet) to keep the heat off of the infiltration teams.

One infiltration team will be all the Avatars/Anchors and their Crews and some other allies (except Doc and his Hamtor army, who have a Codeship and are part of the fleet) will enter Connected Cosmos: The Game courtesy of Timmy making a wish (since they know that FOP Fairy Magic trumps firewalls but Jayin doesn't), cure the stolen Avatars, then take out all the major Bosses in Renata, Harmonia and Sleeping Gaia (because the Twilit Rifts the bosses are connected to are acting as anchors keeping the stolen code attached to CC:TG's developer server) and await extraction.

The other infiltration team consists of Steve, Rob, Welony, Cursor, Samurai Bob, King Mickey, the AVA Squad and Enigmoth (the Paradox Pokemon, a legendary Bug/Dragon type that has Phase Shift, an ability that makes it not exist every other turn) sneak through the firewalls in a Gummi Ship using Enigmoth's Ability while Chroma and Blaze are being distracted by Mira (she's literally running across the physical firewalls to exploit the fact that firewall programs are programmed to destroy potential virus infiltrators at all costs because if you'll recall her base programming is to be annoying as hell and never get caught) so they can get into the maintenance areas of the CCC Servers and find and destroy the Purchase Keys so this can never happen again (Piracy, Bitches!!!)

Then the final steps are to breech the Firewalls entirely (they will, in fact, have several options for doing so) and have their strongest Programs grab the three Servers and the infiltration teams and hightail it out of there.

Jayin won't be able to do shit about it legally, since if she tries to press charges she'll have to explain how the hell it even happened, which will either make her sound nuts, or pull back the veil of secrecy and in the process reveal that she's exactly the kind of person she's been getting portrayed as in SMG4 and the Grid's videos when so far it's been seen by the viewers as part parody of studio execs in general, part Alyssa being understandably bitter about what happened to her. Either way her reputation would take a massive hit, and she would not be willing to do that to herself even if it would make her win overall.

woke up cos search party had a loud part.. must've been right at the right part of my rem cycle to feel fully awake.... checked phone to find the guys from that band i started a discord server for posted it on their insta story.... many many people r joining the unfinished ass server (which is cool but as the only admin/mod a LIIIIttle stressful... also stressful cos it's just the actual band in there looking at all the shit ive just been posting for my own shits and giggs.....) and on top of all this i'm unrelatedly very nauseous - i'm pretty convinced i gave myself food poisoning with the fast food i ate yesterday... so not only am i too wired to fall back asleep i'm also very sick feeling and uncomfortable so i don't wanna lay down... help
