Well, well, well. 

Empires have been built and fallen faster than a new reputation bodysuit, but here we are. The longest running gag of the Eras Tour comes to a close after a consecutive 131 wears - we finally have Version 2 of the reputation bodysuit! 

Many, myself included, thought that a V2 might feature green snakes. But Taylor instead opted for gold. I must admit, I do love the reference to many of the ‘golden’ lyrics that feature across reputation. It’s the perfect nod to much of the album’s themes - finding something beautiful and shining, even amidst turmoil and danger. While other Eras Tour variation costumes simply constitute a colour swap, the reputation V2 retains the asymmetric silhouette of the original but completely reworks the snake design. The snakes are larger, thicker. Raised, and three dimensional. There’s also a more distinct cobra design (Hi Karyn!) on the front, poised to strike. The new bodysuit is comprised of “gold baguettes, black bezels, and crystal stone accents” according to the designer. 

I’ve often joked that there is only one reputation bodysuit because one can’t improve upon perfection, but they sure tried here. If I were to pick, I still think I’d nod towards the original. Something to me prefers the flatter, more defined, application process of the snakes. But I love the usage of gold and the new overall layout of the snakes slithering and coiled around her body. I’m so glad that our long-awaited second version of this jumpsuit had a lot of obvious, concerted effort to tie into the original but to also stand on its own with a new arrangement of the snakes and application process.

“no, i hibernate awake.” you mumble sarcastically, but he catches it even if your words are muffled

“c’mon, i’m just checking!” he throws his hands in the air as if protesting your attitude

“yes, i sleep, for the most part.” you scoot over a little more and lift him up, setting him down in your lap. “but i’ll be awake here and there.”

you rest your head on top of his and continues to work, effectively caging him in

he realizes you’re much more like a snake than he thought

not in an alarming way

you’re coiling around him, but, like, in a friendly danger noodle way

“will you?” he chuckles; maybe his plans aren’t entirely foiled, after all, “for how long?”

you look at him. “a few minutes up to an hour?” 

you’re only getting up for water and/or changing sleeping positions

never mind, his plans to try to spoil you is, in fact, foiled

he pouts. he had the entire thing planned out already! all five days that you’ll be off!

he looks like a kid who’s about to buy the last donut but you beat him to it and buy the donut right in front of his eyes.

“you can visit.” you say, and you see him light up almost immediately. 

though, you don't think there’s much worth visiting, but whatever makes him happy

when aventurine visits you during your well-deserved vacation, he’s pleasantly surprised. you’re sleeping so peacefully, despite the fact that you usually rarely sleep at all.

you’re curled up into half a ball under your blankets and your scarf

and letting out little snores

but he doesn’t know the frequency of your brumation period

as far as he knows, it’s once in five years, but he has no idea if it’s more than five years

he recognizes the amount of trust you have in him to let him visit you when you’re sleeping, and it’s doing things to his stomach. you’re so lazy, so barely aware of your surroundings, but you trust him to be around you while you are in this state.

there is an urge, and he acts on it. he nuzzles against your cheek, rubbing your noses together and planting a small kiss on your forehead. he’s been dreaming of holding you like you’re his greatest treasure, but he’s never mustered up the courage to do it. 

maybe someday he will tell you, and then he’ll be allowed to adore you openly the way he’s always wanted to.

Eve watches you nod, enthusiastic and excited, and she can’t help the fondness twitching her lips into a smile the way you regard her like she was a snapshot of the stars taken by the Hubble telescope. Still, she’s skeptical, enough that it shows. Her brow raised as she regards you in the mirror of her vanity where you’re standing behind her.

“You want to do my makeup?” Eve parrots, emphasizing the first lilt of the question.

“Yes,” is your enthusiastic reply, brushes in hand as you wave it in the mirror, and she can’t help the way it makes her smile widen.

“I don’t even remember the last time I saw you do your own makeup,” she scoffs, but it’s a heatless remark as she spins in her chair to face you, and has to grapple with the immediate cuteness aggression coiling like a viper in her gut. She wants to grab at your wide-eyed face and kiss you silly, just to see that enthusiasm melt, but she has restraint. “Why mine?”

“Because I want to touch your face.” You don’t flinch admitting it, but Eve almost does. She wants to tell you that you could’ve just kissed her instead. Wants to tell you she’d rather your lips on hers than to anguish over the daydream of it while your hands roamed her face. But you’re friends, and you’re… probably just joking, even if she wishes you weren’t.

So when she opens her mouth, it’s not to ask you to kiss her. “Weirdo.”

But still, “Fine.”

The brush is just a tad shaky when you ghost it over the apple of her cheeks, patting it like you’re layering gold leaf onto some fancy $80 dessert. You’re all but straddling her lap, knees bracketing either side of her thighs like you’re about to give her a lapdance and she’s genuinely going insane. Her throat feels dry at the way one of your hands is cupping her jaw as you apply a light foundation with the other, and she can feel your breath kissing her skin.

She’d asked you earlier, hesitating, heart beating wildly, if you needed to be so close by, but you merely responded by looking at her through half lidded eyes and asking so sincerely if she wanted you to move away. Of course she just told you that that wasn’t what she was saying at all, and neither of you prodded or elaborated.

“You’re gonna poke my eye out like that,” she mumbles, meaning to hiss but the wanting’s screwing up her throat.

You don’t acknowledge her beyond a grin, thumb brushing just once across her cheekbone, and it’s enough to shut her up quick. Then when you press your teeth lightly into your bottom lip? She wants to pass out. You look so focused, on her, and she has to settle her breath while her nails dig into the vanity desk behind you, her arms either side of your waist.

The brush sweeps back and forth, a light layer of foundation where sleepless nights have stained her under-eyes like a muddy eyeshadow, your thumb smoothing out what the brush can’t. It should be noted, Eve thinks, that the face you make when you pull back to assess the evenness of the application is unfairly gorgeous. When your lips part to speak, she doesn’t know if she wants to launch forward to kiss you or just let you speak to hear your voice.

“Does it feel cakey?” You ask, completely unassuming as one of your hands comes back to settle on her face.

“It feels fine,” she huffs, hoping to whatever’s listening in out there that you can’t feel the way her heartbeat’s running just from the proximity. You nod, pulling back to switch your brushes, or products— she really can’t tell at this point what you’re doing anymore. All she knows is that she wants it to be your lips on hers.

You tell her anyways with a grin, half turned to the mirror still where you’re meeting her eyes in the glass, “I wanna try a trick I learned online on you, is that ok? Just gonna—“

You gesture with your pinky, following along the curve of her under eye, and she feels exposed the way you grin at her in the glass when you realise she’s barely looking where you’re pointing in the first place.

“I’m gonna try a smokey eyeshadow trick,” you tell her, facing her fully, and her throat feels dry.

She licks her lips, catching the way your eyes dip down to follow the gesture, and her voice is quiet when she speaks, “Just don’t make me look ugly.”

Eve would bottle up that smile you give her after, just to replay it back when things get tough. “Couldn’t, even if I tried, Eve.”

And then you’re easing back into it, gently asking her to cooperate— “Close your eyes, here, yes! Thank you,”— or cooing at her when you pull back, and it’s overwhelmingly good the way you feel so close to her.

She barely notices it when her hands find themselves catching at your waist, fingers splaying along the small of your back like she’s anchoring you both, and Eve feels something boil in her blood the way you stop still to look at her. Not with disgust, or discomfort, like she might have feared, but with a stutter to your expression that makes her heart skip; your lips ever so slightly parted in surprise.

“So you don’t fall off,” is her quiet explanation, green eyes peering into yours like it explains the way her breath feels heavy in the space between you two. The barely there, almost extinct, space between you two.

“Right,” you start, like you’re unconvinced the way you purse your lips, “Thank you.”

And you shift on her lap, impossibly closer, and she feels like she’s going to die the way her hands start shaking.

She sees herself, barely tampered with save for the smokiness wrapping gently around her eyes, highlighting the green of them to make them strike like cut emeralds; a patch of living forest saved in the aftermath of a forest fire, framed by her red hair. And god, when you turn back to her to tuck a loose strand of it behind her ear, eyes crinkled in just a way, she wants to kiss you breathless. Hands gripping softly tighter along your waist and back, curling into the fabric of your top.

“So?” You pry, not seeming to mind at all the way she’s curling around you like a vine.

Eve wets her lips, swallowing thickly. Refusing to break eye contact. “Not bad.”

You were both resting in his room for an hour or so, both scrolling through TikTok mindlessly, as your head laid on his chest and his arm was sprawled over your waist. You were content, but that feeling slowly dissipated as your boyfriend kept telling you the one word you hate the most; No.

“Nope, nah, no. And don’t give me those eyes.” He replies, a ghost of a smile present on his countenance. He lets out a sigh at your persistence, and readjusts himself on the bed so you were both facing each other. Unbeknownst to you, his reluctance to partake in this challenge was mainly so you wouldn't gain any suspicions about where his unnatural strength came from, as he wasn't ready for that conversation just yet.

Once you finally gain composure, you breathe out a response. “Yes! Yes, Miles you are. Now can we do the challenge?” Miles nods, as he tells you to pull up the video to decide which movies to recreate. You both decided on a push up and a hip thrust to begin with.

“I can’t even do a regular push up, what makes you think I can do one with you on my back? Are you trying to kill off your girl already?” You exclaim dramatically, regretting your decision to  suggest this. Miles smiles widely, clearly very excited. Too excited.

You get into the plank position, feet shoulder width apart and your head hung low. You tried to mentally prepare yourself, but nothing could prepare you for the weight that was literally put onto your shoulders. Your body hits his bedroom floor, absolutely failing at staying upright, let alone doing a press up.

“Miles! Chill!” You groan out (whilst smiling to yourself), rubbing the knees that collided against the floor.

“My bad. I’m sorry guapa.” He replies, giving you multiple pecks on your mouth and both kneecaps. You begin laughing to yourself at the sheer stupidity of the situation, and Miles follows suit. 

“Boy, don’t laugh too hard because I don’t think you’ll do that much better!” You comment, catching Miles' attention. His eyebrow raises at that comment, and a smile appears on his face once again.

“Bet. Get on top of me then.” He instructs and gets into position, as he fights down a laugh after realising how that sounds.

“Not like that-”

“Honestly, I don’t mind either way.” You state nonchalantly, making Miles get all bashful and awkward. A side of him that you’ve always loved.

You climb onto Miles, putting all of your weight onto him. You even cross your legs on his back and you still couldn’t detect any falters in strength or a little wobble. He presses down into the ground and comes back up to his original position with ease, multiple times. You furrow your eyebrows, thinking this can’t be the same scrawny boy you fell in love with. You hop off his back, and he jumps up, brushing his hands off. You furrow your eyebrow as bewilderment is plastered all over your face.

“Wh-”

“Gym!” He blurts out quickly. Miles clears his voice, regaining his cool. “Gym. Been going for a couple months, been meaning to tell you.” He answers, a quivering smirk present on his face. You mouth out an ‘okay’ and move onto the next movement, the hip thrust.

Miles offers to go first, still feeling slightly guilty for your little knee incident. He sits back down on the floor, resting his back against his bed frame. You realise this pose is a bit more intimate than a push up and you shyly smile to yourself. You sit down on Miles’ lap, suddenly getting in extremely close proximity to Miles. Your breath flutters against his lashes and you can practically see every speck on his face, from his chestnut irises to the pattern of his eyebrow hairs. You wrap your hands behind his neck as his hands are carefully placed on your waist, his fingers tapping into your skin out of habit.

“Well don’t forget the challenge now, Morales.” 

His eyes were focused on everywhere but your eyes, avoiding eye contact with you as if it’s the plague. You laugh to yourself quietly. Miles finally completes the hip thrust, lifting you up and putting you down with such ease and stability. None of you move. Your heads inch closer, ghosting each other's lips.

“Y/N, I-”

Before you know it, the door to Miles’ room whips open, revealing Mrs. Morales standing there with a laundry basket full of clothes.

“Miles, I thought I told you to leave this door-”

You and Miles look up, jaws wide open at this surprise appearance, wincing in embarrassment. You understand how this looks to Rio, seeing her son underneath his girlfriend as she straddles him. It looks that way, but it truly isn’t. You think. You quickly get up from Miles, and shift away from him as much as you possibly could. The levels of embarrassment squashes you whole, wishing for yourself to be anywhere but here. 

“-open. This door is supposed to be open.” Rio says after giving Miles an extremely stern look. 

“It's not-”

“I’m so so sor-”

“Just come and eat, Miles. Y/N, are you staying for dinner?” Rio questions, pinching her nose bridge in annoyance. You could practically hear the lecture Miles was about to get. And as for yourself, you’re lucky that you’re her favourite, or else this would’ve ended very differently.

“No it’s okay, thank you. I need to head home anyway. Thanks.” You respond quickly, not trying to stay any longer in the tense atmosphere. You quickly grab the stuff that was within arms reach and exit Miles room.

“Bye, Miles.” You say flurried, before giving an extremely ‘I’m so sorry about everything’ glance to Rio.  She nods in approval, before crossing her arms and facing her son.

Miles was dead.
