I finally took the time to photograph my vintage dip pen nib collection, and I need to share with you all how wonderful and diverse their designs are.

These two are my favorite. Just look at them! One of them is named Gorille and the other Mephisto, but to me they're little pumpkins.

And of course you gotta love the Pinocchio nib. You get to write with the nose of a tiny guy! Just not something you get to do anymore.

#I collect them because they come in fun shapes but they're also incredibly nice to use#all the ones I own write impressively smoothly#even the most flexible and fine pointed nibs#I have a ton of modern nibs as well (like a lot) and smoothness plus flexibility is not a common trait combo#good object#dip pens

personal pet peeve is when i see posts about VERY OBVIOUSLY song of achilles content but it is not tagged as such, only tagged with their names and im like ok wel!!! i wouldve enjoyed tsoa content but i just wish this was tagged as SONG OF ACHILLES achilles and not achilles!! the thousand year old mythical figure?? whose public image has seemingly been hijacked by this soft boy yaoi!!?!? i respect the soft boy yaoi, i enjoy the soft boy yaoi, but for the love of god tag it for what it is. and if you tag it as iliad content you will boil.
#i do love seeing content that is inspired by both sources tho#tsoa is good like objectively#or enjoyable i should say#i do have some qualms about a fully grown straight white woman writing tbf non descript but still sex scenes about teenaged characters#and the mischarictarization is insane at points but i respect the creative liberties neccesary for it to be palletable to modern morality#downplaying achilles being a slave owner was wild tho#WHY DID WE MAKE THETIS AN OP???#i do have this problem with#epic the musical#odysseus#but its not nearly as bad#if not because of commonality then because its just more obvious with epic vs odyssey#achilles

hi oldenglishtextposts, I've been thinking of learning old english because I have a book for learning it. before I jump in, and I am sure this has been asked but I cannot find it—how similar is the sentence structure to english? from what I've seen translated its pretty similar but Idk also.
hi!
Old English has pretty flexible word order. Modern English largely communicates what a noun is doing in the sentence (ie whether it is the subject or object) through the order of the words. We use subject verb object (SVO) by default. Old English does this by adding suffixes to words, what's known as case marking. This allows sentences to be in lots of different layouts.
My translations generally stick closely to modern word order, which is completely grammatical in OE, but just not the default like it is in ME. I do this largely out of laziness, but I also think it helps the average tumblr user to see the connections between the languages and be a bit more engaged. SVO, VSO, and SOV are by far the most common. In poetry, you'll sometimes find weirder ones that are needed to keep the alliteration and rhythm correct.
For example, the first three lines of Beowulf go:
Hwæt, wē Gārdena in ġeārdagum/þēodcyninga þrym ġefrūnon/hū ðā æþelingas ellen fremedon.
Keeping the same word order, this says:
So, we spear-Danes in olden days/kings' might heard of/how the princes strength performed.
This probably isn't too hard for you to parse, and the nouns have case markers that make some of the relationships more explicit. (there are plenty of nuances there that I am skipping over for simplicity's sake) One thing that can be confusing is that þrym and ellen are both what are called strong masculine nouns, which look the same as both subject and object. Usually, you can use the context around the words to figure out what's going on; here, there aren't any other nouns that could objects, so you can safely assume that the only ones that could be objects probably are.
Of course, making this a nice poetic translation is it's own challenge. Here's a translation by Chickering, who's my go-to for straightforward 1:1 translation:
Listen! We have heard of the glory of the Spear-Danes/in the old days, the kings of tribes—/how noble princes showed great courage!
#I do generally switch SVO to SOV if the object is a pronoun#because that ordering is much more common and it always feels weird to me if I don't#anyway i didn't mean for this to be so long.#but i <3 blabbing#i hope this helps?#resources#ask

Enid: Celebratory glitter!! (Throws some glitter) Stranger: Wow, must be hard to keep that wild girlfriend of yours out of trouble. Wednesday: (Stares) Enid has on numerous occasions had to place me in "Air Jail" in order to stop me from flinging myself into the maws of monsters and murderous men armed with nothing but a tooth pick and an overwhelming conviction that I can never die.
#wenclair#wednesday addams#Enid Sinclair#wednesday x enid#wednesday netflix#wednesday 2022#I love that in contrast to the usual energetic one stupid restrained one smart dynamic#The one who hold the common the sense between Enid & Wednesday is objectively Enid#This isn't to say Wednesday isn't smart but she has zero self preservation instincts & an ego the size of the moon#Bumbleby also sort of had this though once Blake dealt with her trauma they evened out#Incorrect quotes#Text Post#Wednesday will die on any hill & has the self preservation instincts of a Chihuahua trying to take on a wolf

on the one hand it's a good thing that calls for a ceasefire and a hostage deal are becoming increasingly more mainstream in israel. on the other hand, where have you been all this time?
nothing's changed. israel is the same now as it was on october 8. are you saying it took you 8 months to realize this ""war"" is pointless? everyone knew. it was so obvious from the start that this has always been nothing more than a bloodthirsty quest for some twisted sense of revenge. am i expected to believe that you thought this would "achieve" anything? am i expected to believe that you thought this would somehow get the hostages back, when a deal was on the table before the """operation""" even started? we were here in 2014. we were here in 2006. we all know the only way to get hostages back is through hostage exchange. am i expected to believe that you're stupid?
seriously, have we not been living the same reality? are you going to pretend that you thought "destroying hamas" was ever a practical and achievable goal? are you going to pretend you thought this was fueled by anything but bloodlust? what changed, then? what suddenly opened your eyes to the fact that this is going nowhere and doing nothing to actually bring back the hostages?
i'll tell you what changed. i'll tell you what made tens of thousands of people protest yesterday when 6 months ago you thought the word "ceasefire" was antisemitic. you calmed down. you are not feeling the same anger you felt at the beginning of this. you are no longer operating on your desire for revenge. and you can see now that nothing has been achieved and we're nowhere closer to "security" than we were 8 months ago. your ideals – that still, of course, don't include palestinians – are no longer clouded by bloodlust. you are able to stop for a second and think, hey, maybe war is bad. or hey, maybe our first priority should be saving the hostages and not. you know. murder.
so now i need you to stop for a second. look at yourself in the mirror. think. really think about what this means. that you were on board with a """war""" that never had any purpose, that was never the reasonable solution, that could have been prevented with every single one of the hostages saved, because you wanted revenge so badly you couldn't even bring yourself to have a shred of rational thought. think about what this says about you.
now think about the 50,000+ people that died because of you.
#im sooooo sick of pretending i have anything in common with those people#if you weren't here on october 8 then i guess it's objectively good that you're here now but i hope you're ashamed of yourself for the rest

Y'all my dumb monkey brain just saw the name "Martin" written down and thought it was spelled wrong I've been reading that name as "Martyn" for so fucking long because of Martyn in the Fucking Little Wood that it's changed my damn brain chemistry this is like when my brain default spelled the name "Caleb" as "Kaleb" but worse because at least I actually have multiple real-life friends named Kaleb I don't have an excuse for this one the brainrot is no longer a silly goof my brain is actually turning to asbestos as we speak

I feel like I need to get more into regency clothing
#it’s not that I’m Not into regency clothing it’s just not my main period#and generally if I’m going to spend money on historical clothing it will be for reenactment stuff#but the thing is regency clothing is objectively more popular and accessible (comparatively)#I mean the truth is that quality historical clothing is almost always handmade and therefore always more expensive#but there’s comparatively More people into regency fashion than late 18th century so there are more options#also this is an observation only I would make but regency clothing is like marginally more socially acceptable to wear in public#idk. I think in general it’s perceived as more ‘fashionable’ than georgian clothing because it appeals more to a modern eye#so while it’s not common it’s comparatively Less Weird idk#sort of makes me sad but I also agree that it is a very universally appealing fashion period#at least in terms of menswear I’m not much of a fan of regency womenswear past the 1790s#but idk I feel like. I want to dress in ways that make me feel happy and confident in my everyday life#and while I’m not Unhappy yeah it is still sort of a dream of mine to effectively have a ‘historybounding wardrobe’#and I feel like regency fashion is the gateway#maybe I’ll make some moves toward that this year#mine
