My municipality JUST got curbside pickup and they’re treating it like it’s the end of the world. Like I get people are mad at the price but anything new is gonna cost money.

I���ve never seen so much push ack for something that is so commonplace in other municipalities. People are so afraid of change omg. Likr they complained about the compst pickup leaving some organics behind (literally one strawberry and so coffee grounds). And they’re all in the comments about how unprofessional it is.

Just adding to say: you can absolutely compost waste from meat eating animals ie. Cats and dogs!

You will need a separate compost pile that is nowhere near any vegetable patches where you might eat from - this compost is strictly for non-edible plants. Pick a cat litter that is biodegradable (so wood/paper pellets or wheat chaff) and use a higher than average amount of nitrogen based material to keep it chemically balanced. Keep it very moist and it should break down in around 18 months!

For dog poop, you'll need to make a digester (full steps here) but it can be done!

How do u know when manure/kitchen scraps is safe to go from the compost pile/bin 2 spread in the garden 'w'

For kitchen scraps and other non-animal products, they’re safe anytime - there’s even a method of composting (Ruth Stout composting) where you take the things you’re composting and drop them directly in your garden under a layer of mulch. If you want them to be fully broken down before you put them in your garden, it usually takes about a year, but you can eyeball it - when the pile stops looking like a bunch of kitchen scraps and starts looking like a pile of dirt, it’s ready.

For manure and other animal products, it depends on what type of compsting you’re doing. If you’re doing hot composting, where you balance nitrogen, carbon, moisture, and oxygen ratios so the chemical reactions “cook” the compost, takes six months to a year. There’s some good step-by-step instructions here. (Note: If you’re using manure from carnivores or omnivores - dogs, cats, etc. - hot composting is the only option to make it safe for growing anything edible.) If you’re cold compoasting - just throwing everything in a pile and letting it rot - let it sit for a least a year, and two years is better.

anyways it’s like almost Fall for real so hello reminder to collect your fallen leaves! It is free mulch! It is free compst! It is free frost protection for your plants! It helps native insects overwitner safely! Pile it up around your plants as mulch! Fill empty plant pots! Us it to compliment potting soil in plant pots! Drill holes in the bottom of a big trash can and fill it with leaves!

Hello hello,

hope your day has been great so far :) When I woke up today, I just laid in my bed for a while and looked at the sun rays coming in through my window. I felt incredibly blessed. My windows were perfectly clean, my bedroom was clean and the weather was fantastic. I’m honestly amazed how calm having an organized apartment leaves me. And how easy it is to maintain this state of things. I’m really lucky that I get to stay home so much during this time, as it really helps me to build good habits and to stick to them. Not that the general situation (quarantines) is good right now, but I think that’s important to make the best of it. And if I can get some personal growth out of it, I’m going to welcome that whole-heartedly. 

On to my plans for this lovely day: ❍ go collect a package from my neighbors (arrived much earlier than it was supposed to be, so I wasn’t home) ❍ put a load of laundry in the wash ❍ vacuum the car ❍ write a shopping list for tomorrow morning ❍ write my letters of cancellation  ❍ wash my pillow ❍ wash my curtains ❍ put the compost-starter in my little compost pot ❍ continue in my guest-bedroom ❍ cook something yummy ❍ do some dusting ❍ mop the floors ❍ do the dishes and prepare everything for tomorrow ❍ stretch and dance ❍ check up on my best friend ❍ paint my toe-nails

Update after dinner: ✓ got the package ✓ put compost starter in my compst ✓ cooked something yummy (salad and salmon) ✓ did the dusting ✓ washed my pillow ✓ did the laundry and hung it ✓ washed my curtains ✓ mopped the floors ✓ did the dishes and prepared everything ...and then I just talked to my friend for hours before showering, skincare and going to bed :D All in all, it was a great day.  Hope your days were good, as well!
