It Is Possible to 'Poison' the Data to Compromise AI Chatbots With Little Effort - Technology Org
According to researchers, individuals could potentially disrupt the accuracy of AI chatbots by intentionally contaminating the datasets upon which these systems rely, all for a minimal cost.

As it stands, AI chatbots already exhibit biases and deficiencies attributable to the flawed data on which they are trained. The researchers’ investigation described on Business Insider revealed that malevolent actors could deliberately introduce “poisoned” data into these datasets, with some methods requiring little technical expertise and being relatively inexpensive.
A recent study conducted by AI researchers unveiled that, with as little as $60, individuals could manipulate the datasets essential for training generative AI tools akin to ChatGPT, which are crucial for providing precise responses.
These AI systems, whether chatbots or image generators, leverage vast amounts of data extracted from the expansive digital realm of the internet to generate sophisticated responses and images.
Florian Tramèr, an associate professor of computer science at ETH Zurich, highlighted the effectiveness of this approach in empowering chatbots. However, he also underscored the inherent risk associated with training AI tools on potentially inaccurate data.
This reliance on potentially flawed data sources contributes to the prevalence of biases and inaccuracies in AI chatbots. Given the abundance of misinformation on the internet, these systems are susceptible to incorporating erroneous information into their responses, further undermining their reliability and trustworthiness.
Through their investigation, researchers discovered that even a “low-resourced attacker,” armed with modest financial resources and sufficient technical expertise, could manipulate a relatively small portion of data to substantially influence the behavior of a large language model, causing it to produce inaccurate responses.
Examining two distinct attack methods, Tramèr and his colleagues explored the potential of poisoning data through the acquisition of expired domains and manipulation of Wikipedia content.
For instance, one avenue for hackers to poison the data involves purchasing expired domains, which can be obtained for as little as $10 annually for each URL, and then disseminating any desired information on these websites.
According to Tramèr’s paper, an attacker could effectively control and contaminate at least 0.01% of a dataset by investing as little as $60 in purchasing domains. This equates to potentially influencing tens of thousands of images within the dataset.
The team also explored an alternative attack strategy, focusing on the manipulation of data within Wikipedia. Given that Wikipedia serves as a “crucial component of the training datasets” for language models, Tramèr emphasized its significance in this context.
According to the author, Wikipedia prohibits direct scraping of its content, instead offering periodic “snapshots” of its pages for download. These snapshots are captured at regular intervals, as publicly advertised on Wikipedia’s website, ensuring predictability in their availability.
Tramèr’s team outlined a relatively straightforward attack approach involving strategically timed edits to Wikipedia pages. Exploiting the predictable nature of Wikipedia’s snapshot intervals, a malicious actor could execute edits just before moderators have an opportunity to revert the changes and before the platform generates new snapshots.
This method allows for the surreptitious insertion of manipulated information into Wikipedia pages, potentially influencing the content used to train language models without raising immediate suspicion.
Tramèr suggests hat at least 5% of edits orchestrated by an attacker could successfully infiltrate the system. However, the success rate of such attacks would likely exceed 5%, he said.
Following their analysis, Tramèr’s team shared their findings with Wikipedia and proposed measures to enhance security, such as introducing randomness into the timing of webpage snapshots, mitigating the predictability exploited by potential attackers.

KIP'S BIG POST OF THINGS TO MAKE THE INTERNET & TECHNOLOGY SUCK A LITTLE LESS
Tumblr media
Post last updated November 23, 2024. Will continue to update!
Here are my favorite things to use to navigate technology my own way:
A refurbished iPod loaded with Rockbox OS (Rockbox is free, iPods range in price. I linked the site I got mine from. Note that iPods get finicky about syncing and the kind of cord it has— it may still charge but might not recognize the device to sync. Getting an original Apple cord sometimes helps). Rockbox has ports for other MP3 players as well.
This Windows debloater program (there are viable alternatives out there, this one works for me). It has a powershell script that give you a little UI and buttons to press, which I appreciate, as I'm still a bit shy with tech.
Firefox with the following extensions: - Consent-O-Matic (set your responses to ALL privacy/cookie pop-ups in the extension, and it will answer all pop-ups for you. I can see reasons to not use it, but I appreciate it) - Facebook Container ("contains" Meta on Facebook and Instagram pages to keep it from tracking you or getting third party cookies, since Meta is fairly egregious about it) - Redirect Amp to HTML (AMP is designed for mobile phones, this forces pages to go to their HTML version) - A WebP/AVIF image converter - uBlock Origin and uBlacklist, with the AI blacklist loaded in to kill any generative AI results from appearing in search engines or anywhere.
Handbrake for ripping DVDs— I haven’t used this in awhile as I haven’t been making video edits. I used this back when I had a Mac OS
VLC Media Player (ol’ reliable)
Unsplash & Pexels for free-to-use images
A password manager (these often are paid. I use Dashlane. There are many options, feel free to search around and ask for recs!). There is a lot that goes into cybersecurity— find the option you feel is best for you.
Things I suggest:
Understanding Royalty Free and the Creative Commons licenses
Familiarity with boolean operators for searching
Investing in a backup drive and external drive
A few good USBs, including one that has a backup of your OS on it
Adapter cables
Avoiding Fandom “wikias” (as in the brand “Fandom”) and supporting other, fan-run or supported wikis. Consider contributing if its something you find yourself passionate or joyful about.
Finding Forums for the things you like, or creating your own*
Create an email specifically for ads/shopping— use it to receive all promotional emails to keep your inbox clean. Upkeep it.
Stop putting so much of your personal information online— be willing to separate your personal online identity from your “online identity”. You don’t owe people your name, location, pronouns, diagnoses, or any of that. It’s your choice, but be discerning in what you give and why. I recommend avoiding providing your phone number to sites as much as possible.
Be intentional
Ask questions
Talk to people
Remember that you can lurk all you want
Things that are fun to check out:
BBSes-- here's a portal to access them.
Neocities
*Forums-- find some to join, or maybe host your own? The system I was most familiar with was vbulletin.
MMM.page
Things that have worked well for me but might work for you, YMMV:
Limit your app usage time on your smartphone if you’re prone to going back to them— this is a tangible way to “practice mindfulness”, a term I find frustratingly vague ansjdbdj
Things I’m looking into:
The “Pi Hole”— a raspberry pi set up to block all ads on a specific internet connection
VPNs-- this is one that was recommended to me.
How to use computers (I mean it): Resources on how to understand your machine and what you’re doing, even if your skill and knowledge level is currently 0:
This section I'll come back an add to. I know that messing with computers can be intimidating, especially if you feel out of your depth. HTML and regedits and especially things like dualbooting or linux feel impossible. So I want to put things here that explain exactly how the internet and your computer functions, and how you can learn and work with that. Yippee!

Not Bad.
In my wandering around the internoise I find a lot of errors. Errors of fact which in turn lead to confusion and poor assumptions.
I often comment on two dichotomies in the audio world. One is of course tube versus solid state electronics. The other is digital versus analog recording and play back. In both areas either side can provide excellent performance.
I have and appreciate both digital and analog recordings.
I have and appreciate both tube and solid state electronics.
Each are different. I have preferences. Neither is inherently bad.
Other people get wound up and committed to this side or that. Recently I read a person saying that vinyl albums have a limited frequency response so they are obviously inferior just for that. London ffrr recordings claimed up to 16khz which is pretty good, and CDs are good to 22khz ( 1/2 of 44khz or the Nyquist frequency) end of debate, so there.
The CD could easily produce up to the theoretical limit of human hearing. I think all digital methods have a similar limit as even with very high carrier frequencies they are filtered to pass nothing above 20khz. That is to facilitate low slopes in the output filters of Class D amplifiers for example. Academic for me as my hearing quits at 12 khz.
But what is the actual limit of LP frequency response? How about 45 khz. Back in the 1970s several companies tried to make quadraphonic sound. They encoded rear channel signals using a high frequency modulation on top of the normal music signal. It did not work all that well, and there were several competing standards and nobody won. But it did fundamentally work.
They produced stereo phono cartridges and LPs with 45 khz information on them using basically the methods used before and since. They made LPs with ultrasonic signals on them. They developed styli that were finer to track this information such as the Shibata which are still made.
My Signet TK7E cartridge was rated to respond to 45 khz. The better Grado cartridges also go that high. The top of the line Grado is rated to 70 khz. This is vinyl technology we have here with at least double the frequency response of digital methods. So no vinyl is not inferior in terms of frequency response potential.
We are of course talking about best case potential, but they did put this stuff out in the market. It actually worked.
Oh CDs have superior dynamic range, but like 20khz high frequency limit can you even use it? If the information is not on the recording does it even matter? LPs have enough for 95% of the time. I have a single CD with an extreme dynamic range where the quiet is very quiet, but turning it up to hear that part of the music makes the loud bit deafening. (KODO)
More recent digital methods have even better dynamic range. The actual use for that is in the recordings, not the playback.
Analog versus digital quality depends on production more than potential. In terms of best neither is. Oh MP3s suck generally as the priority there was compactness not quality. CDs, DSD, High res streams are fine.
And as far as tube versus solid lumps of semi-conductors well it is kinda the same. Computers and Class D amplifiers use MOSFET materials and those run at gigahertz. There are consumer vacuum tube amps that respond up to 100khz fine, and go down to 10 Hz as well. Either technology has far more potential performance than anyone can use.
Both types can have very low distortion. At normal listening levels the percentage is minuscule. Different voice and such is real but due to other things which to me are almost like black magic. My freshly retubed ARC amp sounds far more clear than before. It is still different than my old SS amp.
This stuff is not bad.

Effective Voice Search Strategies
Long-Tail Keywords are Key
When it comes to voice search, long-tail keywords are crucial. Users tend to ask more specific questions when speaking compared to typing. For instance, instead of typing “best Italian restaurant,” a user might say, “What is the best Italian restaurant near me?”
Conversational Content
Creating content that mimics natural conversation can significantly improve optimization. This involves using a conversational tone, asking and answering questions, and structuring content to be easily digestible.
Optimizing for Local Search
Many voice searches are local. Phrases like “near me” or “closest” are common in voice queries. Ensuring your business information is accurate and up-to-date on local directories can boost your visibility in search results.
Tips for Optimizing Content for Voice Search
Focus on Natural Language
To optimize with NLP, your content should reflect how people speak naturally. Avoid overly technical jargon unless it’s necessary for your audience.
Implement Structured Data
Using structured data helps search engines understand the context of your content, which is essential for providing relevant search results. Schema markup can be particularly useful here.
Answer Questions Directly
Voice search often involves questions. Structuring your content to directly answer common questions can improve your chances of appearing in search results. Use headers like H3 or H4 to break down questions and answers.
The Role of Featured Snippets
What are Featured Snippets?
Featured snippets are short, direct answers that appear at the top of Google’s search results. They are often the result of search queries, as Google aims to provide quick answers to users’ questions.
How to Optimize for Featured Snippets
To optimize for featured snippets, ensure your content is clear and concise. Use bullet points, numbered lists, and tables to organize information. Directly answer the questions your audience is asking.
Mobile Friendliness
Mobile Optimisation is Crucial
Most voice searches are conducted on mobile devices. Ensuring your website is mobile-friendly is essential for search optimization. This includes fast loading times, easy navigation, and responsive design.
AMP Pages for Speed

Faster Diagnosis of Endometriosis With AI - Technology Org
ETH spin-off dAIgnose is developing an algorithm to analyse ultrasound images of the womb automatically. This should enable doctors to diagnose endometriosis more quickly in the future.

Endometriosis is widespread. Around ten percent of all women of childbearing age throughout the world suffer from it. And “suffer” is the operative word here, as it takes an average of eight to twelve years for these benign growths of the endometrium in the abdominal cavity to be diagnosed. Years in which women endure severe pain generally before and during menstruation.
Many gynaecologists still rely on a laparoscopy performed under general anaesthetic to reliably diagnose endometriosis. However, this procedure is not only laborious and onerous for patients but also relatively costly. While endometriosis could be diagnosed for most patients via ultrasound, this calls for a certain degree of experience as it can easily go undetected.
AI expert Fabian Laumer and gynaecologist Michael Bajka therefore founded the spin-off dAIgnose in the summer of 2023. Their goal is to develop an algorithm to assist doctors in interpreting the ultrasound data of the womb during the initial examination in order to diagnose endometriosis reliable and much faster. They are receiving specialist support from the ETH AI Center and their two co-founders ETH Computer Science Professor Joachim Buhmann and Julian Metzler, an endometriosis specialist at University Hospital Zurich.
Entrepreneurs by chance
The fact that Laumer is today developing medical solutions is something he owes on two counts to chance. For although medicine and biology already fascinated him as a child, he initially studied electrical engineering and information technology. It was only when he was studying for his Master’s degree that he had the opportunity to combine artificial intelligence (AI) and medicine. “I heard by chance that Buhmann’s research group was offering a Master’s thesis on the AI-based analysis of ultrasound data of the heart,” explains Laumer. He immediately applied – and was successful.
After completing his Master’s degree he continued the research work in a doctoral project. And once again chance came to his aid. Bajka contacted his research group asking whether AI could be used to detect endometriosis. Laumer was exactly the right person for the gynaecologist specialising in endometriosis to put his question to. For his doctoral project, the ETH researcher developed an algorithm enabling the better interpretation of ultrasound data of the heart. This approach was then transferred to the womb.
Creating a 3D model from 2D images
Laumer and Bajka developed an algorithm that identifies pathologies on the ultrasound images of the womb that are often difficult or even impossible for the human eye to see. To this end, Laumer trained the algorithm with ultrasound images and patient data. “The number of pregnancies and Caesareans, age or phase in the menstrual cycle – all these factors obviously influence the appearance of the womb,” he explains.

The algorithm currently shows the endometriosis in colour on 2D ultrasound images. If the development work proceeds as planned, Laumer hopes to generate a 3D model of the womb by the end of the year on which all growths and adhesions are clearly marked. This could enable gynaecologists to precisely localise endometriosis and better assess the severity of the condition.
Standards for endometriosis diagnosis
To ensure that the dAIgnose AI solution delivers the most reliable results possible, Bajka and Laumer also wish to define fixed standards for the ultrasound examination of endometriosis. A software program with integrated AI will therefore actively guide gynaecologists through the examination in future. “This way we can achieve standardisation while the program will ensure that the entire womb is mapped.”
In order to push forward the research, the spin-off is currently on the look-out for further investors and holding initial talks with manufacturers of medical devices. If everything goes to plan, market entry at the end of 2025 is conceivable. However, various certifications will still be pending to allow the intelligent software to be used in medical devices. One thing is certain for Laumer: “My aim is for women in future to receive a reliable diagnosis within a year.”

Surveillance System I Security & Surveillance System
Tumblr media
The smart and best surveillance system is rapidly advancing. With the introduction of AI (Artificial Intelligence), ML (Machine Learning), and 4K video resolution, today’s security equipment necessitates more data storage and integrated technology capabilities. The comprehensive data and improved media quality have an impact on the speed, network, and storage space. Because surveillance technology must remain operational 24 hours a day, backup and storage are critical issues that must be considered at the outset. To function substantially in safe-shielding the premises, these systems must include hybrid hardware and software components.
Thermal imaging has become the norm as health and safety concerns have risen to the top of the priority list for businesses. Unquestionably, monitoring health standards is at the forefront of ensuring the safety of the environment and the employees. Furthermore, edge computing and cloud computing will be critical, as firms seek to analyze data at the edge as well as in the cloud. Another crucial element that businesses must consider when implementing the best surveillance systems for real-time pattern recognition is latency.
Technology innovation is still shaping numerous industries and the emergence of advanced technology ushers in new trends. Let’s take a look at the most recent CCTV surveillance technology trends and how the most recent security gadgets are serving these evolving needs. When you are not at home, having the greatest security camera for your home will give you peace of mind. When motion is detected, a smart security camera records footage and sends an alert message to your phone. Home security cameras are inexpensive, simple to install, and available in weatherproof versions that can be used both indoors and outdoors.
With so many alternatives on the market – indoor, outdoor, wireless, and DIY – it might be difficult to discover the ideal match for the camera system you have in mind. But don’t worry; we’ll assist you in locating the ideal gadget for the job.
10 Best Camera Surveillance System of 2022
1. Reolink Argus 3 Pro: Overally best 2. Google Nest Camera: Best tech 3. Abode Iota: Best all-in-one camera 4. Canary Pro: Best climate sensors 5. Blink Indoor: Grate battery life 6. Global Surveillance System
The mass observation of whole populations beyond national borders is known as “global mass surveillance.” Its presence was not widely acknowledged by governments or the mainstream media until Edward Snowden’s global surveillance revelations sparked a debate about the right to privacy in the digital age.
Its origins may be traced back to the mid-twentieth century when the United Kingdom and the United States signed the UKUSA Agreement, which was later expanded to include Canada, Australia, and New Zealand to form the current Five Eyes alliance. The alliance established cooperation agreements with a number of “third-party” nations. This eventually led to the construction of a global surveillance network known as “ECHELON” (1971).
Conclusion
A good surveillance system is equipped with modern, cutting-edge technologies. Thermal imaging, edge computing, and cloud computing will be critical as firms seek to analyze data at the edge and in the cloud. When motion is detected, a smart security camera records footage and sends an alert message to your phone.
