Kohl (eyeliner) in Islam

It used to really confuse me that Ali, Husseyn, Hassan, and (in his few modern portraits) Muhammad, were always painted with kind of dark sunken looking eyes that almost seemed to be lined. So I was really surprised to find out just that!

Apparently Muhammad, according to tradition, used to wear kohl, being supposed to have said:

“Verily, the best of the kohl that you use is antimony, for it brightens the eyes and grows the hair.“

Additionally, Imam Ali would dye his beard red with henna. To this day in some regions, Muslim men and women use kohl as eyeliner and mascara (particularly during Ramadan) and dye their hair and beards a distinct red, as pictured below.

im sorry but "team do whatever you want" when it comes to literally mutilating a dogs ears is questionable at best. there's a reason cropping and docking are banned in lots of places. whatever purpose they would serve straight up cutting off part of the ear is not particularly intelligent, especially since there's other ways to deal with that. regarldess, let's be honest, most people do it for aesthetic reasons, which is just :|

taping on the other hand is a non surgical procedure, so like, if somebody really cares that much about (in my opinion irrelevant, at least when it comes to intricacies like this, and especially when the dog in question is just a pet, not a contestant in any dog show) outward appearance of the animal just tape its ears man

I’m “team do whatever you want” because I don’t like to shame people for things that may or may not be outside of their control. It’s like me with aversive tools, I think their unnecessary for a lot of situations/dogs, but I also can aknoweldge that I do not know the dog or situation is question and that may be the least invasive, least aversive way for that dog to be.

I’m not in a breed where cosmetic procedures like crop, dock, or taping are common and it is not my place to make those opinions on what people should do or not. They should make those decisions for themselves, but I’m also allowed to have my own opinion and that is that those procedures are not necessary, while I also understand that US breed politics are not changing regarding cosmetic procedures anytime soon. This is a nuanced issue here in the US.

A majority of cosmetic procedures here in the US are done before your puppy is even chosen for you: Dewclaws are taken off shortly after birth, tails are docked shortly after (and do serve a safety purpose for some working dogs, docking is still allowed amongst working dogs in some countries where crop/dock is banned), breeders of cropped breeds here will not give you the choice between cropped or uncropped and it is rare to find a responsible breeder that does not in breeds where it is standard (because the dogs can’t show without crop/dock in some breeds), the dogs may have been adopted or had a medical issue that required removal (like my last golden who had to have her tail cropped due to a break and yes people still gave me shit for it). We need to remember that people often didn’t choose to have these procedures done, but their dog came to them with them already in place (either from its breeder or past life) and we shouldn’t shame them for that, that’s why is at team do what you want.

Meanwhile taping, corrective grooming, chalking etc. are all consciously done cosmetic procedures well after the dog is in its new home (both temporary or permanent) to make the dog fit a very specific and narrow vision that the show ring creates). Like no breeder that crops, docks, or removes dews is going to deny that they do these things, but in a lot of breeds where taping is common the dogs are cosmetically altered and a lot of people act like they’ve had those ears naturally. Which is a lie.

Do I hope to see more acceptance of uncropped and undocked dogs in the show ring here in the US? Absolutely. Do I think breeds with weak tails that required docking for safety should have more substantial tails bred in? Yes. Do I think that even “non-harmful” comsmetic procedures are silly? Yes and I think there needs to be a crack down on it just as much as corrective grooming, chalking/dyeing/nose pigment alteration, crop/dock. Some are more harmful than others but at the end of the day I would be happy if all dogs were just shown fucking naturally because none of these procedures, even the temporary ones, give us a truthful look at what the dog as a whole is.

i had to look up wtf this was referring to because i had kind of the same train of thought like yeah, you’re supposed to boil it to sterilize it?

but no, the rainwater is chemically contaminated by PFAs (common in things like shampoo/liquid soap, comsmetics, and plastic packaging; the news appears to be referring to them as “forever chemicals” as they take… an inconcievably long amount of time to break down) which wouldnt be removed by typical sterilization methods.

apparently the levels of PFAs in our rainwater have been this way for two decades or so, however, and the recent declaration that rainwater is no longer safe is based on an increased understanding of the risks PFAs pose and the resultant updated guidelines for safe levels in drinking water. still a big deal — but the rain isn’t going to like, immediately kill you if it touches you or anything.

my research into this was fairly surface level, i just checked out a few articles from the past week on the topic, but my personal takeaway was that if you don’t rely on rainwater as a regular water source, you should still be more worried about PFA exposure from the products you use and consume than from the water.

love is one the main feelings and emotions people feel on a daily. people love their pets, their family, their significant other, fuck, even themselves. and it's interesting because of all those things listed above, i have never felt the emotion of love. and if i have, i compare the emotion of love to content, comfortablness, familiarity. i've never heard of someone loving someone or something that constantly changes. it's hard to love a dog if one day, it's this happily lovable creature and then the next is stand offish, aggressive and quiet. idk it's interesting, because people tend to ask me. hey do you like him? what are you guys? are u guys dating or?? and i never truly know the answer. yes i like the man, he's an interesting dude. but routine gets boring and living in a fraction of a time frame where i'm constantly doing the same thing with one person gets old. i usually want out. but that nagging in my ear, comfortable, familiarity. it's coming down to the point of where i lost my view point on him that i have to get myself back into knowing, because a bitch got too comfortable, too content. everything is temporary, all my feelings and emotions were surely past on this man and it's neither good nor bad. our talks of the universe and time frame and space and particale dust is all interesting and in hindsight, intriguing. it's open my mind and i surely appreciate it but at the same time, i want to go venturing, i want to go and experience things. see stuff above the horizon, i want to go hiking and go to restaurants i've never been and see shows and concerts and bars and parties. i want to fucking live. but it's hard, to mention that to someone whose immediate thought is that "she's sprung and going to try and cuff me". my view on relationships is set in stone. now here's to say if i meet someone it'll change, but in hindsight i know what i want out of someone. and it takes a while to figure it out and find it with said someone. but i have this feeling, this gut in my underbelly that he isn't it. he's not the one. he's not the one where i do this with. because he's already met his one. and honestly good for fucking him. in other circumstances, yes, he's the one that made me learn and grow and envelope all these intriguing ass ways to view life. but he's not the one i'm looking for, not the one where i can live amongst with simply because of this feeling. now, in hindsight, do i know he's not. no, my feeling could be wrong. but i've felt this for weeks and it hasn't gone away to the point where i'm like damn. he truly isn't someone i can see living and learning and growing along with. i see him as a friend. i see him being a grand friend, a friend that helps me grow. but i'm not helping grow, at least i dont think, and that's where it's key. idk ideology and relationships are wide and broad. there's a variety of ways in being with someone, and i believe we met for some comsmetic energy fusion of some sort. maybe i am helping him in some sort of way? anyway, it isn't to build a relationship on, it isn't what i'm looking for but i'm not searching. but those feelings, those instinctual, gut, underbelly feelings have never gone away the moment i've met him. and i've changed myself in ways unimaginable. and that is something i always have to keep in mind.
