Hello! I was looking through the twst notes linked in the voice actors section, and there are videos who are "not available in your country". I suppose they're only available in Japan, in the same that Ameba streams are restricted overseas? Would it be legal (and not too much of a bother) for you to download some of those videos as mp4 and post them on your Tumblr..? I'm mostly curious about the 2024 Midorikawa/Kato recording where they discuss the 7th book (in this note https://twstnote.com/lilias-voice-actor-midorikawa-hikaru/)
Hello hello! Thank you for this question! 🦇🐉
Tumblr media
(above is a screenshot, not an uploaded video! m(_ _)m)
Oh no! My apologies, I can never tell what things are available where.
The July, 2024 recording between Midorikawa and Kato is 1 hour and 13 minutes long, which would be a lot for Tumblr 💦 But I did receive a request for a summary, which can be found here!
Much like Twisted Radio Station the two VA are not on screen, with only their headshots and subtitles (in Japanese) appearing as they speak, but! Midorikawa and Kato's have been together on-screen for a webshow while speaking about Twst before 👀
Tumblr media
After Midorikawa appeared on Kato's radio show in September 2023, Kato then appeared on Midorikawa's show in January 2024, which had video!
Neither show has any affiliation with Twst so many topics were discussed, but Twst did come up in conversation. Midorikawa is known to be a big fan of Twst and his show even had an entire segment on it!
There were several items placed on a tabletop and he had to guess which one belonged to Kato: a wallet, cologne, a CD, an ab roller, a mobile battery or Chrono Trigger for Super Famicon.
Midorikawa held his hand over them one and a time and said "Far Cry Cradle" in Lilia's voice, pretending to be using Lilia's unique magic--it was so great!
While Kato's radio show episode is no longer accessible Midorikawa's episode is still available on ABEMA if you would like to see it!
Kato is a very, very big fan of Midorikawa's and it is wonderful to see/hear them interact with one another ^^
I live-tweeted the show when it first aired, and here are some highlights!
Kato made roast beef for them to share and Midorikawa is explaining that he is a terrible cook, "I am just like Lilia"
Midorikawa says that his voice gets deeper over time when he has a lot of dialogue at once, so sometimes the staff will interrupt him during recordings to say, “You’ve become Crimson Muscle.”
Kato has put on a Christmas tree headband. Midorikawa put on rabbit ears but Kato vetoed it for not being Christmas enough. Midorikawa tried a Santa hat, but then vetoed it for not being cute enough. He is now wearing a headband with both rabbit ears and a Santa hat.
They explained that Midorikawa’s fans are called “leaf-chan.” They decided to give Kato a special fan name. They had the chat decide. Kato’s Midorikawa-fan-name is now Chef Leaf.
(One commenter recommended the fan name of "Roast Leaf" and one year later I am still not over it ww)

Authentic Japan in Gyakuten Saiban pt. 2
We continue the series of posts about authentic Japanese things in the world of Gyakuten Saiban. Today the focus will be on case 3-5, which takes place high in the mountains at the Hazakura temple.
Tumblr media
真宵ちゃんによれば、《円座》というらしい。
mayoi-chan ni yoreba, “enza” to iurashī.
According to Mayoi-chan, it's called a "Enza."
Tumblr media
……きっと、ここに来なかったら
一生、知らなかっただろうな。
… kitto, koko ni konakattara isshō, shiranakattadarou na.
...If I hadn't come here, I would never have known.
It would seem that Naruhodo was so active in commenting in 2-2, and here he refers to what Mayoi told him. But let's pay attention to the fact that he had never seen such pillows, so he could not know their name. (the theory of familiarity with interior items through relatives).
In fact, this is quite understandable - in Japan, enza were actively used only until the Edo period (1600-1868), and after cotton was brought to the country, they were replaced by "zabuton" pillows.
Tumblr media
This fact can be used to measure how ancient the Ayasato clan is, compared to the Naruhodo clan, even if the tradition of using some no longer common interior items has been preserved.

テレビの時代劇でしか見たことのない光景だ。
terebi no jidaigekide shika mita koto no nai kōkeida.
It's a scene I've only seen in historical dramas on TV.
He continues to call enza "straw zabuton".
Hibachi is a traditional Japanese portable stove for heating and cooking food, traditionally located in the center of the room.

きゃあ、カワイイ! お地蔵さんがいっぱいだよ!
kyā, kawaī! Ojizōsan ga ippaida yo!
Oh, so cute! There are lots of Jizo statues!
Tumblr media
ここには、かわりに事務所のコケシ、置いとけばいいでしょ。
koko ni wa, kawari ni jimusho no kokeshi, oi tokeba īdesho.
Why not just put the office Kokeshi doll here instead?
Tumblr media
(sō ieba, ano kokeshi wa doko kara arawareta nda?)
(Now that I think about it, where did that Kokeshi doll come from...?)
Tumblr media
Jizo (地蔵/womb of the earth), as they are called, are made in the image of Jizo Bosatsu, guardian deity of children and travellers.
Jizo also affectionately called “O-Jizo-san” or “O-Jizo-sama”.
Jizo are properly called “Jizo Bosatsu”, originating in ancient India where in Sanskrit they are called Ksitigarbha, which means earth womb. Jizo are often dressed in red bibs and hats as in Japan it is believed that the colour red can help ward off evil.
Tumblr media
Kokeshi (こけし, 小芥子) are simple wooden Japanese dolls with no arms or legs
Although kokeshi dolls are primarily used as children's toys, they are also symbols of hopes for a bountiful harvest, wishes for good fortune and good luck, and great appreciation for craftsmanship and culture.
Mayoi unironically suggests that they steal one of the statues to the office, to which Naruhodō simply ignores, but also ponders another detail - where did the Kakeshi doll in his office come from? It was clearly not his doing. And the person who brought this doll clearly did so with only good intentions - a wish for good luck and an expression of appreciation for craftsmanship. Any suggestions? (Wrong answers only)
___________________________________________
There are several more moments in Case 3-5 related to cultural heritage. And what's even more intriguing is that they are all related to Mei Karma (Franziska von Karma). But, unfortunately, I have a limit on the number of attached photos, so wait for the next part.

got the full japanese recording of les mis on cd for $1 at a used book sale so here are some of my thoughts and reactions (just in time for barricade day!)
also these are just little things I noticed, some about the japanese but a great many more general things as well - not a thorough analysis by any means!
act 1 (disc 1)
囚人の歌 (lit. the convict's song) - the chain gang
I am not sure what I was expecting but this seems to be a pretty straightforward translation?
24601 has become 24653, I assume for rhyming and syllabic purposes - "san" (3) rhymes better with valjean than "ichi" (1) and 0 has two syllables? (although "roku" is also two syllables and they kept that so I'm not sure)
anyways I'm sure victor hugo is heartbroken that the japanese people don't know the date of his conception
仮釈放 - on parole
I really like his voice here
also he is played by sakae takita who was 36 when he first played valjean and is ~44 at the time of this recording (1994) - in his bio, he mentions that he likes to cook and is very proud of his homemade miso soup
司教 - the bishop
I fear I was not expecting the screaming (scared me for a moment sorry)
this is a very beautiful scene and I really like it; however the bishop's vibrato combined with the fact that it's in japanese made is a bit incomprehensible to me :((
ヴァルジャンの独白 - valjean's soliloquy
it is very hard to put a lot of words into a short number of beats in japanese so I am impressed at what they have achieved here
that being said I do prefer the english version...
一日の終わりに - at the end of the day
first let me just say I absolutely love the orchestration in this piece - it hits every single time
this is a good lyric: "この荒波が / お前らを / 押し流す / 巻き起きる波 / 借金の嵐さ / ああ それで / 一日が終わりなのさ" (these rough waves wash you away, rising waves, a storm of debt, and that's how the day ends)
this as well: "金がなければ / ゴミ屑とおんなじさ" (if you have no money you're no different from trash) - it's so harsh and despairing
poor fantine...this scene is tragic no matter the language
since this is a live recording, you can hear some of the movement on stage and various reactions to the lines that I don't think I've noticed in other recordings? it makes it sadder nontheless
夢やぶれて (lit. a dream torn) - I dreamed a dream
her voice here is gorgeous - fantine is played by hiromi itoh in this recording (I did a quick google search but couldn't find much on her except that she originated the role of aysha in children of eden on the west end)
ラブリィ・レイディ(波止場)- lovely ladies (the docks)
the part where the sailors and the ladies are singing in counterpoint is surprisingly light in tone? I don't think I remember any english recordings like this but I may be mistaken
ファンティーヌの逮捕 - fantine's arrest
oh she's coughing :((((
i am a big fan of this valjean and javert (javert is played by kiyotaka imai, who has also been in evita and phantom)
javert switches to fairly formal japanese whenever he addresses madeleine which is a nice detail
馬車の暴走 - the runaway cart
the creaking sound effects for the cart really add to the experience
i love this chapter in the brick and hearing it in the musical is pretty cool
裁き (lit. judgement) - who am I - the trial
valjean uses the first-person pronoun "ore" which is considered more masculine than other alternatives (ex: "boku")
people are screaming at the end as he reveals himself (?) I have never seen the musical so I'm not sure if this is a notable detail
ファンティーヌの死 - fantine's death
this song makes me cry every time
this is nice: "ときが少しずつ流れてゆくわ" - time flows little by little
対決 - the confrontation
javert calls himself and valjean "うじ虫" - maggots
he is no longer using formal language - it's back to the more informal/disrespectful (?) language from the first song
幼いコゼット (lit. young/little cosette) - castle on a cloud
she says "友だちもいるわ" (there are friends [in the castle]) which is absolutely heartbreaking; she's so lonely :(
この家の主 - master of the house
for some reason the harmony is coming out more than the melody? very interesting
i remember seeing somewhere (maybe in the arai manga??) where mme. thenardier mocks thenardier calling himself a "哲学者" (tetsugakusha - philosopher) by calling him a "ケツ学者" (ketsugakusha - made up word that either calls him an "ass scholar" or perhaps a phony)... anyways, I was hoping I'd hear that here but it didn't happen :(
I have to take a break but I'll be back with more from the rest of disc 1 and hopefully disc 2 as well!

黐木[Mochinoki] Ilex integra
It is so named because 鳥黐[Torimochi](birdlime) is obtained from the bark.
In his book 木菟俗見[Mimizuku zokken], 泉 鏡太郎[Izumi Kyōtarō] describes the following. 鏡太郎 is the real name of 鏡花[Kyōka].
[Tsuide ni, onaji kanazawa no machi no ryoshuku no, ryōrinin ni kiita node aru ga, kawasemi wa mochi wo osorenai. Mushiro shiranai to ittemo ii. Niwa no ike no koi daishō hakatte nerai ni kuru ga, shikake sae sureba, sugu ni kakaru.] In addition, I heard from a cook at the same traveling inn in the town of Kanazawa that Kawasemi(Alcedo atthis, Common kingfisher)s are not afraid of birdlime. Rather, it is safe to say that they do not even know about it. They eyeball the size of the carp in the pond in the garden and come hunting, but as long as he set a trap, they were trapped immediately. Source: https://dl.ndl.go.jp/pid/1682838/1/236
This part was a bit surprising. They have good eyesight and sensation. In my case, I have never succeeded in capturing a shot because even though I just point the camera at them from a distance, they quickly notice it and fly away.
By the way, Kawasemi is also written as 翡翠, reading as hisui, which also means jade in general. 翡[Hi] refers to the male, 翠[Sui] refers to the female. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_kingfisher
