先週末もらった水戸芸術館のタワーのペーパークラフトを出勤前とお昼休みに作り始めた。 ハサミを使うのは苦手だけれど、思ったより黙々と作業できて楽しい。坂口恭平さんの“cook”にも手首から先の運動は心に良いと書いてあった気がする。

上司にお付き合いいただいて、一緒に現場に行ってもらったけれど、8割は業者の方とおじさん同士の立ち話で、もう何度同じ話を違う角度から話すんだ？と遠くの茂みや、不意にやってきた女子高生の行列を見ていた。 この週末にした趣味の射撃の話や、射撃で撃った鴨や亥豚を解体した話をしていた。相槌すら打つ気力もなく、なんだか私の方もこの人と一緒にお仕事をするのが嫌かもしれない、と思った。もしかしてこうゆう時間の積み重ね故に長い労働時間を生み出しているのか？と気が付いてしまった気持ち。

ちゃんと生活のことをセーブして、夜の時間を過ごせますように。

12月3日 今年の年末はインターネットに言葉や写真を置くことはやめよう。 とてもつらいから、今年はやめよう。 と、思っていたのに、昨日の帰り道にインターネットに置く言葉をずっと考えている頭があった。久しぶりに、国道に車のライトが並ぶ車窓の風景を眺めていたら、まだ何かを考える事ができる頭のエネルギーを使いたくなり、とりあえず文字起こしをしていた。 そして、やっぱり少し楽しかった。

年賀状もつらいからやめよう、と思っていた。 でも2024年の悲しみを、2025年の年賀状にしようと思った。ずっと悲しかったから、どの写真を使っても悲しみの年賀状になってしまうんだけど。

昨日まだフォローしていなかったとあるアカウントをフォローしたところ、とても嬉しいメッセージをいただいた。インターネットと写真を、ぎりぎりでも��けてきてよかった、とこうゆう時に思わせてもらえる。

社会の方々ときのこの山とたけのこの里で関わっていこうキャンペーンを続けてしまっていて、今日も、何でこんなことしてしまったんだ？と帰り道に死にたくなってしまった。 わざわざ「お菓子ありがとうございました」と話しかけてくれた方もいて、普通に「ペーパークラフトのお礼です！」と返答をすればよかったのに、よくわからないモードでよくわからない返答をして、相手に困り笑いをさせてしまった気がする。 普通に会話ができない。

やっと明るくなった寒い朝の時間に毎日すれ違う方と、今日は暗い帰り道にもすれ違った。

I've been living with a neighbourhood ghoul for a few months now. The food he prepares is very tasty, especially the meat dishes, which are better than in a casual restaurant. Ricola Herbal Candy (Essay)

Ricola Herbal Candy was once often seen in Japanese convenience stores, but it was replaced by throat lozenges made by Japanese companies and disappeared. However, at the end of 2024, I bought it because it was being sold in a new package at a drugstore.

This candy contains 13 types of herbal extracts, and I looked up their effects on the Internet. There were about two herbs that I didn't know why they were included, such as Lady's Mantle, which is effective against gynecological diseases. Still, most of them were confirmed to have effects against colds, such as cough suppressants, expectorants, fever reducer, and sweating.

Of the 13 types, I have grown a horehound, and I know it is effective against cold symptoms. It is a reliable herbal candy.

(Horehound) In any case, it is bitter. That's why you can't use it in cooking. However, its bitterness is extremely effective in terms of its "cough suppressant" effect, and when I tried it before, it stopped my cough perfectly. The leaves are somewhat fruity, but that does not guarantee their sweetness.

The Japanese name is black horehound, but the name Horehound comes from the Old English har hune, meaning "downy plant."

1) Cultivation: Sunny, wind-protected, dry, alkaline soil is best.

2) Propagation: Sow in late spring, and take cuttings in late summer.

3) Harvesting: Harvest the leaves and flowering parts as needed from the flowering season.

4) Storage: Dry the leaves and flowering parts, or put them in syrup.

5) Medicinal: Drink the infusion. Mix six finely chopped leaves with a spoonful of honey, and eat slowly to soothe a sore throat or cough. Repeat six or seven times if necessary.

リコラ・ハーブキャンデー（エッセイ）

リコラ・ハーブキャンデーは一時期日本のコンビニでもよく見掛けたが、日本の会社ののど飴に駆逐され、姿を消した。だが２０２４年末、ドラッグストアで新包装のパッケージで売られていたので買ってみた。

このキャンデーにはハーブ抽出物１３種が配合されていて、私はそれらの効能をインターネットで調べてみた。中には婦人病に特効のあるレディーズマントルなど、何故配合したのか解らないハーブも２種ほどあったが、大部分は鎮咳、去痰、解熱、発汗など風邪に効く効能が確認できた。

１３種のうちホアハウンドは私も栽培したことがあり、風邪の症状に効くことは解っている。頼りになるハーブキャンデーである。

（ホアハウンド）兎に角、苦い。だから料理には使えないです。ただし、その苦さは「鎮咳（ちんがい：咳を止める）」効果のうえで卓効があり、私も以前試したところ、見事に咳は止まりました。葉には、幾分かのフルーティーさはありますが、それは葉の甘さを保障しないのです。

　Horehound

クロニガハッカが和名ですが、ホアハウンド（Horehound）という名は古英語の「綿毛の生えた植物」＝har huneからきています。

１）栽培　　日当たりのよい、風を防げる、乾いた、アルカリ性の土壌が合う。 ２）繁殖　　春下旬に播種、夏の終わりに挿し木ができる。 ３）収穫　　開花期から必要に応じて葉や花のついた部分を収穫する。 ４）保存　　葉と花のついた部分を乾燥。またはシロップにつける。 ５）薬用　　浸出液を飲む。はちみつスプーン一杯分に６枚の葉を細かく刻んで混ぜ、のどの痛みや咳を和らげるためにゆっくり食べる。必要なら６，７回繰り返す。

今日のトピック：や、～なければいけません、midterm review

So this past 金曜日 was the midterm. It wasn't that bad and we already got our scores but I wanted to go over our midterm review sheet.

I have a challenge for you! I want you to write down what you think the answer is based on my previous posts. There are one or two grammar points I don't think I've gone over with you, so I'll do that now.

The final grammar points i need to cover are や And ～なければいけない／なきゃいけない

Let's start with や!

や connects two nouns like と except や suggests that the things referred to are proposed as examples and that you are not exciting an exhaustive list. It's similar in the way that たり is used. 練習しましょう。

 AやB (A and B, for example)

東京や大阪に行った。I went to tokyo and osaka (and may have visited other places)

おにぎりやラーメンを食べた。I ate onigiri and ramen. (and may have eaten other things)

Honestly there's not much else to it. It's really straightforward!

Next is ～なければいけない／なきゃいけない

This is used to say when something has to/must be done. ねければ is the more formal version and its more often seen in the written language while なきゃいけない is more colloquial and mainly found in the spoken language. To conjugate, you need your verb in the present negative form. For example:

勉強する＞勉強しない＞勉強しなきゃいけない

作る＞作らない＞作らなければいけない

歌う＞歌わない＞歌わなきゃいけない。

待つ＞待たない＞待たなければいけない

食べる＞食べない＞食べなきゃいけない

火曜日に日本語の試験（しけん）があるので、たくさん勉強しなければいけません／いけない。Because I have a japanese exam on tuesday, i must study a lot.

もうすぐ母は家に帰るので、車を洗わなきゃいけません。Because my mom is returning home soon, i have to wash the car.

食べすぎたので運動しなければいけません。Because I ate too much,  I must exercise.

今、私の双子はフランスに住んでいるので、手紙（てがみ）を送らなきゃいけません。Because my twin is living in France right now, I must send letters.

熱があって、喉（のど）が痛（いた）いので、薬を飲まなければいけません。Because I have a fever and my throat hurts, I must take medicine.

Our midterm review was in the format of a story. 始めましょう

You are an exchange student in tokyo. You are on your way back to Tokyo from a one day trip to Oze. The train stopped half way for a while due to a minor road accident. You get bored, so you start talking to a woman/man sitting next to you. The person asks you “where are you from?” how would you say this in japanese?

出身（しゅっしん）はどこですか。

Ask the person has ever been to foreign countries

外国（がいこく）に行ったことがありますか。

The person commented that your Japanese is very good. Be humble like Japanese people and say “No, no. I have to study more”

いいえいいえ。もっと勉強（べんきょう）しなければいけません。／勉強しなきゃいけません。

Go on to say “i want to become better at japanese”

日本語がもっと上手（じょうず）になりたいです。

The train finally starts moving. You ask the person where they are going now. The person says, “I wanted to buy clothes. I'm going home now.”

ふくを買いたかったんです。でも、今から家に帰ります。

The person continues to say, “I need to cook tonight because my mother is sick.”

母がかぜをひいているので、今晩（ばん）料理（りょうり）しなければいけません。／しなきゃいけません。

You ask the person if his/her mother is all right. The person tells you, “she caught a cold and has a fever. But she is okay.”

かぜをひいて、ねつがあるんです。でも大丈夫ですよ。

The person goes on to say, “but she’d better not work today. She should sleep a lot.”

今日は働かないほうがいいですね。たくさん／よく寝たほうがいいですよ。

I wrote down たくさん while my teacher wrote よく and i was a little confused but i think you can use either.

You ask the person what dish you are good at making. The person answers i often make curry rice, pork cutlet, tempura, and so on

よくカレーライスやとんかやてんぷらを作ります。

The person asks you if you cook a lot. Tell the person that “I want to cook more but I am too busy.”

もっと料理したいですが、いそがしすぎます。／いそがしすぎるんです。

The person tells you that they have to do an English homework assignment. You ask the person what they do in class. she/he says, “we read english books, write essays, listen to the news, and so on.”

私たちは英語の本を読みたり、作文（さくぶん）を書いたり、ニュースを聞いたりします。

You ask the person if they practice speaking as well. The person says, “I took the conversation class for a month but I quit.”

一ヶ月間（いっかげつかん）、会話のじゅぎょうをとりました。でも���めました。／とりましたが、やめました。

The person says, “the teacher's english was too fact! But I am interested in English conversation.”

先生の英語は早すぎたんです。／早すぎました。でも、英語の会話にきょうみがあります。

You offer some help. You tell the person that you can be his/her English conversation partner. You both decide to tutor English and Japanese to each other. You get off the train in a happy mood. 

The next day your advisor at school tells you that you looked very happy. Yell your advisor with a lot of excitement, “i met a fantastic woman/man on the train yesterday!! We will practice English and japanese!!” (hint- use んです）

昨日、電車ですてきな女の人／男の人に会ったんです！私たち／いっしょに英語と日本語をれんしゅうするんです。

Translation

Stir-fried salmon with garlic butter and soy sauce

(Cooking time: 10 minutes)

Ingredients (2 portions): salmon (2 fillets), potato starch (1 table spoon), green onions (2 medium-sized), mushrooms (100g), sugar (1 teaspoon), butter (1 teaspoon), soy sauce (1 table spoon), 1 clove garlic (grated)

Cut the salmon into bite-sized pieces and sprinkle with potato starch.

Cut the green onion and mushrooms into suitable sizes.

Put butter into a frying pan, fry the salmon fillets in it and when they are cooked through, add the ingredients from step 2. Mix in soy sauce, sugar, and garlic, fry everything and it's finished!

Today the psycho pass radio hosted by kougami and Ginoza Va's aired today with Akane's Va.

When i clicked on the link on twitter and took me to the japanese site, my homepage thankfully translated the page. Ot said that today episode is free and features a guest. It said that past aired episode were premuim(so I assume not free) and some feature guest some not. The radio show air every 2nd friday monthly. I don't understand japanese. But they seem to have a fun time. I hear them mention providence and Saiga sensei at time. I even hear them mention about Ko eating hamburgers and possibly took Akane to eat onigiri riceballs. Then they mention about eating cooking eel. Bit the eat part sounded like the Va's liking eel and then saying characters would only eat it if they cook it at each other house since they don't like synthetic fish. Maomao “Things they can’t eat… It means they become poisons that can even pass through tasting for poisons...”

猫猫「ここで、猫猫の豆知識。『食べられないもの』以外でも、鮮度の落ちた魚を食べると蕁麻疹(じんましん)が出ることもあるらしい。異常がある場合、自己判断せずすぐに医者に診てもらうのが英断だろう」

Maomao “Kokode, Maomaono mame-chishiki. ‘Taberare-nai mono’igai-demo, sendono ochita sakana’o taberuto jin-mashinga deru-kotomo aru rashii. Ijoga aru baai, jiko-handan-sezu suguni ishani mite-morau-noga eidan daro.”

医者に診てもらう(いしゃにみてもらう/Ishani mite-morau): see a doctor

<～してもらう: する(do) + もらう(get, to be given)>

In Japanese, we use “～してもらう” when we ask someone else to do something for us. This usage includes our appreciation to others who kindly take time and effort to do something for us, regardless of the fact that it’s their job or we’re paying for it.

Ex) 私は夕食を作るのを、母に手伝ってもらった。（わたしはゆうしょくをつくるのを、ははにてつだってもらった/Watashiwa yushoku’o tsukuruno’o, hahani tetsudatte-moratta.）; I asked my mother to help me cook dinner.

(Strictly speaking, it’s not clear if I asked or not. Most likely I asked, but perhaps she helped me of her own will. Anyway what is important is that “～してもらう” has a meaning of appreciation for the kindness, and it’s completely different from “～させる” which means forcing someone to do something.)

<～してあげる: する(do) + あげる(give)>

On the contrary, when we do something for someone else, we can say “～してあげる”, but it’s a bit intrusive because it has the nuance of purposefully spending our time and effort on behalf of someone else and also expecting someone to thank us.

 Ex) Shall I help you cook dinner?

Ex.1) 夕食を作るのを手伝ってあげようか？(ゆうしょくをつくるのをてつだってあげようか？/Yushoku’o tsukuruno’o tetsudatte ageyoka?) ←a little intrusive

Ex.2) 夕食を作るのを手伝おうか？（ゆうしょくをつくるのをてつだおうか？/Yushoku’o tsukuruno’o tetsudaoka?）←not intrusive, just trying to help someone.

<～してくれる: する(do) + くれる(give)>

There is one more word, “してくれる”. It means that someone do something for us, and the subject is someone, not us.

 Ex) 母は私が夕食を作るのを手伝ってくれた。(はははわたしがゆうしょくをつくるのをてつだってくれた/Hahawa watashiga yushoku’o tsukuruno’o tetsudatte-kureta.); My mother helped me cook dinner. (In this case, it’s not clear if I asked my mother for a help, or she helped me of her own will.)

まさか(Masaka): No way, It can’t be…, Don’t tell me…, We say まさか… when something unbelievable or something we don’t want to happen is happening, or when we completely deny what we were told.

文(ふみ/Fumi): Old and classical way of saying “a letter”. Today, normally we call a letter “手紙(てがみ/tegami)”, and we read 文 as “bun” which means “sentences”.

アレルギー(Arerugī): allergy

Although we also use the same word “allergy”, our Japanese pronunciation is different and we may not understand if you say “allergy” with natural pronunciation of English.

If you are allergic to some foods and want to tell the staff at the restaurant in Japan, it’s the best to show some written text of “アレルギー(in Katakana)” and “the foods name(in Japanese)”, so that every Japanese can get it without fail.
