Please tell us about the secret story behind the production of the final episode.

最終話の制作秘話を教えてください。

Finishing and shooting lasted all night for about three days, and it seems that I could see hallucinations by the end of it (laughs). I am relieved that we were able to broadcast the content that we were able to show. The trick that the passcode to unlock the missile is "HEART" was thought up by Naohiro Fukushima, in charge of screenwriting. I think the highlight was the scene where Joker writes his name on the spaceship and tells Phoenix, "Be sure to come back." I wonder when he wrote the name, but in the shot of the spaceship just before this scene, the name is obscured by light to disguise it. So the name was already written at that point.

There is a scene in the end of episode 50 where Spider Ace protects President D from a sniper's bullet and shows him the "DF" ring on his left hand, saying, "I have sworn my allegiance to President D." When the first picture came in, the ring on Spider Ace's middle finger was forgotten, so I asked for the picture to be redone and a ring to be added. Then somehow, I ended up with a picture of Spider Ace with the ring on his ring finger (laughs). The staff around me and I laughed hysterically and rushed to have it fixed.

I wanted to depict how Spider Ace came to be loyal to D. I liked Spider Ace and Detective Wolfe in the original story, and I really wanted to have Detective Wolfe appear in episode 35, but there was no room for him, so I gave up on the idea. I am glad that I was able to create an interesting combination with D and Spider Ace, but I also wish I could have drawn those two in the story. With Dai Sato, who is in charge of the series composition, I was also thinking about a story about Dr. Neo's astronaut days. When he was young, he had a moment when he saw a spaceship that was disguised as a comet for a moment due to the influence of a solar flare, and from that moment he came to believe that aliens existed. It was a shame that we couldn't depict it. Neo knew Silver when he was young, and I wanted to depict that with Purple as well.

For me, it is a special work that fulfilled my dream of directing an animated TV series. I myself have loved anime since I was a child, and even now as an adult, there are many works that I still remember as my favorites. There are still many stories I would like to tell from the original work, and if there is an opportunity, I would love to do a sequel. The staff also said that they would like to do a sequel, so I feel that "Kaitou Joker" is a work that is truly loved by everyone.

ガーリックポテト＊Garlic Potatos

初めて作るガーリックポテト。定番のヨーロッパ田舎料理です。

ざく切りの玉ねぎをレンジで加熱(箸がすんなり通る位)それをフードプロセッサーでペースト状にします。深めのフライパンに多めのオリーブオイルを入れ、潰したニンニク、パンチェッタを常温から弱火でゆっくり火を通します。ニンニクの風味とパンチェッタの塩気、旨味が油に馴染んだら、パンチェッタを取り出します。その油でパプリカをさっと炒め、取り出します。ニンニクだけを残したオリーブオイルに玉ねぎペーストを加えて弱火で加熱します。注意点は最初は水分が多いので焦げませんが、水分が減り飴色に近づくと焦げやすくなるので、鍋肌からずっと一定に飴色になるまで混ぜ続けましょう。

ニンジンもレンジで加熱しておきます。ジャガイモは好みで皮つき、皮無しどちらでもOKです。こちらもレンジで加熱しておきましょう。

飴色になった玉ねぎペーストに、ターメリックを加えます。そして、ニンジン、マッシュルーム、サラダ豆を加えます。スパイスはナツメグ、コリアンダーを加えます。ニンジンの角がとれるぐらいに炒めたら、白ワインを全体が浸るぐらい加えて火を強め蓋をします。

アルコールが飛んで玉ねぎペーストが全体に絡んだら、ジャガイモ、パンチェッタをフライパンに戻します。そして最後にパプリカを加えます。

ここで大切なことは、ジャガイモのホクホクした食感、パンチェッタの歯ごたえ、パプリカのシャキッとした食感を残すことです。

全体の色目、風味を確かめてターメリックを足しても良いでしょう。

First time making garlic potatoes. A classic European country dish.

Heat roughly chopped onions in the microwave (to the point where chopsticks can easily pass through them), then use a food processor to make a paste. Put a large amount of olive oil in a deep frying pan, and slowly cook the crushed garlic and pancetta over low heat from room temperature. Once the garlic flavor and the salty, umami flavor of the pancetta have blended into the oil, remove the pancetta. Lightly fry the paprika in the oil and remove. Add the onion paste to the olive oil, leaving only the garlic, and heat over low heat.The thing to keep in mind is that it won't burn at first because it has a lot of moisture, but as the moisture decreases and it approaches a candy color, it will burn easily, so keep stirring until the skin of the pot becomes a candy color.

医者に診てもらう(いしゃにみてもらう/Ishani mite-morau): see a doctor

<～してもらう: する(do) + もらう(get, to be given)>

In Japanese, we use “～してもらう” when we ask someone else to do something for us. This usage includes our appreciation to others who kindly take time and effort to do something for us, regardless of the fact that it’s their job or we’re paying for it.

Ex) 私は夕食を作るのを、母に手伝ってもらった。（わたしはゆうしょくをつくるのを、ははにてつだってもらった/Watashiwa yushoku’o tsukuruno’o, hahani tetsudatte-moratta.）; I asked my mother to help me cook dinner.

(Strictly speaking, it’s not clear if I asked or not. Most likely I asked, but perhaps she helped me of her own will. Anyway what is important is that “～してもらう” has a meaning of appreciation for the kindness, and it’s completely different from “～させる” which means forcing someone to do something.)

<～してあげる: する(do) + あげる(give)>

On the contrary, when we do something for someone else, we can say “～してあげる”, but it’s a bit intrusive because it has the nuance of purposefully spending our time and effort on behalf of someone else and also expecting someone to thank us.

 Ex) Shall I help you cook dinner?

Ex.1) 夕食を作るのを手伝ってあげようか？(ゆうしょくをつくるのをてつだってあげようか？/Yushoku’o tsukuruno’o tetsudatte ageyoka?) ←a little intrusive

Ex.2) 夕食を作るのを手伝おうか？（ゆうしょくをつくるのをてつだおうか？/Yushoku’o tsukuruno’o tetsudaoka?）←not intrusive, just trying to help someone.

<～してくれる: する(do) + くれる(give)>

There is one more word, “してくれる”. It means that someone do something for us, and the subject is someone, not us.

 Ex) 母は私が夕食を作るのを手伝ってくれた。(はははわたしがゆうしょくをつくるのをてつだってくれた/Hahawa watashiga yushoku’o tsukuruno’o tetsudatte-kureta.); My mother helped me cook dinner. (In this case, it’s not clear if I asked my mother for a help, or she helped me of her own will.)

まさか(Masaka): No way, It can’t be…, Don’t tell me…, We say まさか… when something unbelievable or something we don’t want to happen is happening, or when we completely deny what we were told.

文(ふみ/Fumi): Old and classical way of saying “a letter”. Today, normally we call a letter “手紙(てがみ/tegami)”, and we read 文 as “bun” which means “sentences”.

アレルギー(Arerugī): allergy

Although we also use the same word “allergy”, our Japanese pronunciation is different and we may not understand if you say “allergy” with natural pronunciation of English.

If you are allergic to some foods and want to tell the staff at the restaurant in Japan, it’s the best to show some written text of “アレルギー(in Katakana)” and “the foods name(in Japanese)”, so that every Japanese can get it without fail.

いまや文庫も新書もどれくらいの種類があるのかまったく知らない。だが、私が読書を始めた中学生の頃には、岩波書店の独壇場だった。その岩波新書の＜新赤版2000点突破！＞を記念して、特製＜読書ノート＞をプレゼントするとのこと。早速3冊ゲットして応募券を葉書に貼って出そうとしたが・・・、普段葉書など使わないのでストックがない。雨の中買い物に出ようと考えたが今日は日曜、仕方ない、明日の朝一番で葉書を買って応募しよう！

5時45分起床。

トラベラーズノートには、もちろん多彩なリフィルが用意されているが、既存のノートや手帳を挟み込んで使うという事例が沢山見つかった。面白いのは、レギュラーサイズにはPlus社の＜Ca.CresSystem＞のノートを、パスポートサイズには無印良品の＜パスポートメモ＞を使う人が多く居ることだ。糸綴じでノートが180°近く開くので書きやすく、はさむだけにしておいて実際に書くときはそれだけ取り出して使用するという方法が便利そうだ。

東京の落友・Nさんに送る定期便、ブルーレイのディスク2枚を用意したが、うち1枚が開けない。原因はわからないが、残り僅かの容量にデータを圧縮して書き込んだことが影響している気がする。次回からは、けちらずに余裕を持ってディスクを使おう。

私が夕飯を用意している間に、ツレアイと三男でココに点滴。

第1話「コックを捜せ」/ The Adventure of Clapham Cookシーズン 1, エピソード 1 ある朝、ヘイスティングスは新聞に掲載された事件をポワロに読んで聞かせるが、どれもポワロの興味を引かず、手持ちぶさた状態。そんな時、ポワロを尋ねて トッド夫人が事件捜査の依頼にやって来る。彼女は居なくなったコックのイライザを捜して欲しいと相談を持ちかける。渋るポワロだったが、依頼を引き受ける ことに。

シリーズ第1作、みんな若い。

終日の雨、彼女の送迎以外は外へ出なかった。水分摂取量も、かえってストレスとなりやすいので止めることにする。

Young leaves are picked in early spring and deep-fried in sesame oil. It has an interesting light, crispy flavor. In Japan, there used to be a tradition of sericulture, but it is now obsolete everywhere, and mulberry trees have been treated as a nuisance for a long time. The leaves are well known for making tea, but not so well known for their delicious tempura. It can be dipped, but it is heavy and not very tasty.

クワの葉の天ぷら（料理）

春先の若い葉を摘んできて、ごま油で素揚げする。軽く、さくっとクリスピーな風味が面白い。日本には、養蚕の伝統があったが、今はどこでも廃れ、クワの木も邪魔者扱いされて久しい。葉をティーにすることはよく知られているが、天ぷらにして美味しいことはあまり知られていない。お浸しにすることもできるが、もそもそ重く、さほど美味しくはない。

チーズトースト狂の夢

上の画像は、いわゆるチーズトースト。 このブログを書いている私が不勉強で知らなかったのですが、チーズトーストの源流を辿っていくと、イギリスの料理の一種である「ウェルシュ・ラビット（英語: Welsh rarebit）」に行き着くようです。”ラビット”という単語が入っているもののウサギのお肉を使っているわけではなく、そしてかれこれ500年以上の歴史がある料理だったということも初めて知りました。

ところで、現代は料理のレシピというのが当たり前のように書籍などの形で存在していますが、その歴史は実はそれほど古くはないとされます。もちろん、レシピという形で記録するには、一般的には文字が誕生していることが必要とされますが、古代の壁画において動物を焼いて捌く絵が描かれていたとして、それは当時における肉の調理法という意味で、料理のレシピの記録と言えば言えなくもないかもしれません。それはともかく、例えばイギリス料理の場合、テキスト記録として残る初期のレシピとはなんなのかと調べてみると、例えば次のような記載があります。

料理のレシピとしてのテキスト記録は中世以降とされていますが、素材の製法に関しては、さらに古い時代から存在しているとされ、例えばチーズの場合は、古代ローマ時代を経て、60年には、南スペインにおいて Lucius Junis Moderatus Columella という人物がチーズを作る方法をすべて記録したとされています。

イタリアの家庭料理について研究する中小路葵は、自身のサイトにおいて、キンステッドの「チーズと文明」という著作の第5章「Caesar, Christ, and Systematic Cheese Making（ローマ帝国とキリスト教 体系化されるチーズ）」に上記の記載があると指摘しています。中小路葵氏のサイトから、その一部を引用してみます。

・・・といった具合で、この記事を読んでいる皆さんもご承知のとおり、チーズ自体の歴史は大変古いものなのですが、この古さに関して、記憶にある方も居るかもしれませんが、例えば6年前には、古代エジプトの墓の埋��品から3000年以上前のチーズが発見されたというニュースが世界を駆け巡りました。

ただ、この世界最古のチーズは細菌で汚染されていることも判明しており、もし食べると、わりと冗談では済まない事態となるであろうことは想像に難くありません。それでもなお、「(四つんばいになって口から泡を吹いている犬のようにあえぎながら）世界最古のチーズを一口食べさせて！チーズの試食を合法化して！」と懇願する人物が登場したり、「私たちは既に呪われた棺を開けてしまいました。もはや、世界最古のチーズを食べても同じことです」と述べてまで食することを望む人物も登場するなど、世界には熱烈なチーズ狂が存在しているのだということを改めて知ることにもなるわけです。

グレコ氏がこの甕の中に入っていた白い物体を調査したところ、およそ3200～300年前のチーズであることがわかりました。あまりにも古いものであるため、このチーズが牛・ヤギ・羊のどの乳で作られたかは不明です。調査ではチーズがブルセラ症を引き起こす細菌「Brucella melitensis」で汚染されていることも判明しました。 （中略） ただし、調査ではチーズが生物兵器として培養されたこともあるブルセラ症を引き起こす細菌「Brucella melitensis」で汚染されていることが判明しており、呪いが本当にあるかどうかはさておき、食べると最悪の場合は死に至ります。

といった具合で、古代エジプトの時代から存在していたとされるチーズなのですが、前述したように、その後の古代ローマ時代においても食されており身近な食材であったのは確かです。例えば古代ローマ時代の哲学者であるルキウス・アンナエウス・セネカは、いわゆる「三段論法の誤り」について哲学的に論じる書簡の中で、チーズを引き合いに出して次のように記しています。

約2000年前のローマで活躍した哲学者であるルキウス・アンナエウス・セネカは、友人に宛てた書簡で以下のように記しています。 “Mouse” is a syllable. Now a mouse eats its cheese; therefore, a syllable eats cheese… Without a doubt, I must beware, or some day I shall be catching syllables in a mousetrap or, if I grow careless, a book may devour my cheese! 三段論法の誤りについての哲学的議論はともかくとして、当時のローマ人はすでに「ネズミはチーズを食べるものだ」と考えていたことがうかがえる、と上記の記事では指摘されています。そして、チーズのイメージといえば、丸い穴が空いた三角形のチーズを思い浮かべる人は少なくないかもしれません。トムとジェリーでおなじみの、ジェリーが好んで食べる穴が開いたあのチーズです。上記の記事は、ネズミは本当にチーズが好きなのか？ということについて記されているわけですが、これに関して、アメリカのドレクセル大学で進化生物学を研究するMegan Phifer-Rixey氏は、次のように指摘しています。

・・・ということで、実はここからが本題のつもりで書き始めた今回のブログなのですが、長くなってしまいました。

日本人には馴染みがない表現なのですが、欧米では「チーズを食べると悪夢を見る」と言われることがあります。これについて、2015年に大真面目に検証を試みる論文が発表されました。結論からいえば、チーズを食べると悪夢が引き起こされることを示唆する証拠は見つからなかった、とされているのですが、この「チーズを食べると悪夢を見る」というのは、英語の言い回しでは、Dream of the Rarebit Fiend と表現されることがあります。

レアビットといえば、冒頭で紹介したイギリスのチーズトーストと同じ英語表現なわけですが、この表現は、アメリカの漫画家ウィンザー・マッケイが1904年9月10日に始めた新聞漫画のタイトルにもなっています。

Dream of the Rarebit Fiend Dream of the Rarebit Fiend is a newspaper comic strip by American cartoonist Winsor McCay, begun September 10, 1904. It was McCay's second successful strip, after Little Sammy Sneeze secured him a position on the cartoon staff of the New York Herald. Rarebit Fiend appeared in the Evening Telegram, a newspaper published by the Herald. For contractual reasons, McCay signed the strip with the pen name "Silas". The strip had no continuity or recurring characters, but a recurring theme: a character has a nightmare or other bizarre dream, usually after eating a Welsh rarebit?a cheese-on-toast dish.
