Bess pulling Starry out of daycare/school (because, of course, she and Wolf are top of the pick-up list) for the emergency of... going plant and seed shopping. And of course having an auntie-niece lunch date complete with gigantic ice cream sundaes! Maybe even meeting up with the other 1843D aunties for lunch too. Of course, the other little Sundrops get their own special days too, sometimes all of them together.

And then Connie flips right around and does it with the little Pups when they come along. There are definitely some little photoshoots to surprise Mummy and Daddy with adorable pictures on her end.

Oh my gosh, imagine Starry at daycare and hearing auntie Bess' voice at the desk. She immediately jumps up from her toys and waddles as fast as she can go to the gate, waving her arms and giggling. "Aunthie, aunthie!"

Starry never knows where Bess will take her, but it's always such a magical experience. When they shop for plants, Starry does her best to learn as much as she can and be a big help. Of course, she holds auntie's hand the entire time. Then, they go to lunch and she can eat ice cream?! She feels like such a big girl when she hangs with her cool aunt and the other 1843D ladies too. She even shows them how she can drink from her sippy cup with her pinky up, like a lady~

And as the years go by and the other Sundrops join, it's just as fun. The Little Twins love it, and Daisy is just as giddy as Starry.

I bet those pictures are adorable. Lots of them end up in frames around the house and on Connie/Adonis' desk.

Oh, absolutely! Connie rolling up to take Cordell to to a sing-along musical at the local theater house, and a huge bookstore where he can browse shelves and pick out anything he wants. ("Cordell, look, a songbook! Want to learn to read music? You have such a great singing voice - just like your mama and papa!") Then, as Georgia and the other pups come along, they're ALL invited to ferry trips around the harbor, or to children's museums where they can run and play, and (of course) dinner/ice cream by the harbor.

Mama and Papa get frequent updates and pics, haha.

The love the couples taking care of and showering all the Pack kids in affection. You know that does MAJOR things for their social development and self-confidence.

I'm sitting here giggling and confused about the whole Hannibal saving Will situation and how Hannibal handled everything. I'm sure a lot of my questions can be answered by saying "It's the same magical realism that lets the characters travel in no time between Baltimore and Wolf Trap and the BAU" but I'm gonna write them out anyway.

Obviously Hannibal killed a bunch of guards and Cordell, and it's heavily implied that Hannibal just left a path of guards' bodies in his wake as he made his way through the estate (and you can also read about it in the script), but how did it go down with Cordell is what I'm curious about.

Because if you think about it, the slice of Cordell's face we see on Mason in the later scene when he wakes up is like, so clean, and perfectly round and evenly cut. I don't care how much surgical knowledge/practice Hannibal has, doing it that well takes time. And also, I feel like Mason would have more than just the supposed 7 guards that Hannibal takes on in the script waiting around his giant estate. Did Hannibal have to keep pausing his work on Cordell to fight off more guards? And also, what I'm more curious about is what was going on with Will while Hannibal was taking care of Cordell (and maneuvering Mason around + retrieving his sperm)?

Because we can clearly see when Hannibal escapes carrying Will that Will is unconscious, but before Hannibal showed up in the operating room, Cordell made it pretty clear that Will was just paralyzed, not numbed, and that he wanted Will to feel every bit of the procedure. I can assume that Will might've passed out from the pain, but also I imagine it'd be like Gideon and Chilton (although that was more of a "keep him alive" than "keep him awake" scenario). There's also the fact that the scarring on Will's face in later episodes shows that maybe Cordell didn't get much further than that first cut we see him make before Hannibal showed up, and if that's the case, then Will was definitely awake when Hannibal showed up.

So did Hannibal knock him out with painkillers and sedatives while he handled his victims? Did Hannibal take off his restraints? Or move him to a guest room? Did Hannibal redress Will or did he let Alana and Margot do that while he was busy? (He seems too possessive for the latter but he's also (normally) sensible about what he can and can't do so who knows.) Or did Hannibal leave Will restrained and just monologue at him while he worked on Cordell and Mason? It's also unclear if the paralyzing drugs Cordell gave him left him unable to speak or if Will just had nothing to say (my guess is he probably was unable to), but if it was that Will had nothing to say, did he and Hannibal just talk before Will inevitably passed out? I can't even imagine what kind of conversation they'd have if they did have one in that moment, especially given that we know that Will is going to break up with him in the next few hours.

CUADERNO REGALADO

Lo cierto es que mi hija me regaló este cuaderno artesanal, hecho de librillos cosidos con grueso cordel, en el que escribo estas rumias (con la vieja Parker 51 que heredé de mi padre, y que es una de mis más preciadas posesiones, junto con la otra parker que tengo, de mi abuelo materno. Ambas estilográficas aparecen mencionadas en distintos pasajes de mi obra; la de mi abuelo, en un poema de mi libro Afuera canta un mirlo, titulado «Reflejos»).

El oloroso papel italiano, de un suave tinte cremoso que no es ni blanco ni amarillo pálido ni hueso, sino que se queda en finísima mezcla de esas tres tonalidades, le sirve de elegante cauce al parsimonioso deslizamiento de la pluma.

A mí, que tantos lustros me he pasado encadenado a todo tipo de teclados (Olivetti, procesador de textos, ordenador personal de mil modelos diferentes, tablilla, BlackBerry, teléfono llamado «inteligente») me encanta escribir a mano; en lo que en inglés llamamos longhand. Es otro el «vuelo» de los párrafos: vas pensando, tomando aire entre las líneas, e incluso entre los vocablos. ¿Más humano? No sé. Más pegado a la respiración, sin duda. Y escribir, como vivir, es respirar. ¡Trece veces por minuto, que decía el célebre verso de Celaya! (No sé si eso lo decía el poeta en aquella pieza, tan justamente famosa, que se titulaba «Momentos felices». Felices son, ciertamente, los momentos de la escritura; el rodar de las palabras por este entrañable soporte de las cuartillas.)

Ahora mi letra se tumba hacia la derecha, porque redacto estas páginas apoyado en la mesa. Cuando escribo inclinándome sobre el regazo, mi caligrafía es más suelta, y me sale más a plomo y relajadamente vertical, menos tensa, menos apretada. Lo mismo me sucede en contextos más espontáneos, como cuando por ejemplo tomo una simple nota al vuelo o borrajeo una rápida lista de la compra.

Escribir a mano es en cierto modo dibujar. A Onetti le gustaba pergeñar manualmente sus textos porque necesitaba sentir el trazo, el dibujo de las letras eslabonadas en la superficie del papel; y escribía, si no me equivoco, a lápiz, al estilo de los viejos periodistas.

Yo también uso mucho el lapicero. Buena parte de los fragmentos de mis ensayos-ficción vieron la luz —en libretas de bolsillo, folios sueltos, huérfanas y viudas hojas volanderas o dorsos de sobres y facturas— al son del baile improvisado del grafito.

Papel y lápiz, tinta y papel: no hace falta mucho más. No hace falta otra cosa.

I have gone and written a completely different story for a completely different character, because I watched a movie with Daniel Gillies in it today and got Hooked on the character he played. Because the thing about me is I will see Daniel Gillies playing a character and I will fall in love with them immediately.

fast forward to sonny munroe. divorced parents. one living in appleton, wisconsin and one in mystic falls, virginia. when sonny was visiting her dad in mystic falls, she met the next door neighbor who had a daughter named elena gilbert. the moment those two girls stood in front of each other, the protection took its course. but sonny went back to wisconsin to finish out her kinder to high school before moving with her dad to finish her college there. it was a deal her parents agreed to.

it was a change for sonny to say the least, but she was able to reunite with elena. and just like her, she fell into the mess of vampires. at first they tried to keep sonny away by compelling her to protect her, however....that was when they realized they couldn't compel sonny at all. that was an interesting thing to find out. so sonny stuck around to help. why? it was in her nature to be there for those she cares about. even in danger.

sonny left so random, but didn't want to go back to wisconsin. instead, she moved to beacon hills where she got to live with her cousin scott mccall. but here's the catch, she knows nothing of his pack or anything he has ever gone through up until one night when she was out on her own and nearly got attacked. being held down and questioned where is scott mccall? in that moment, she thought she was going to die up until a jeep pulled out and scott jumped her attackers as stiles pulled her away. right then and there, scott told her everything and now she's trying to figure out a way hot to live like this.

sonny decided that hollywood was no longer for her and moved to wisconsin. however, moving back home didn't seem like the right option. especially since it was a small town and everything felt like it was moving backwards. not to mention the talks that would come around. so sonny packed up once again and moved to austin, texas. it was still country, right?

she moved into her own little farm, like she always wanted and started living a simple life. little did she know, it was right next door to the walker family. and not knowing all the things that came to that family's way.

at one point, her cow got sick and she ran to the ranch next door, finding cordell and begging for help. and that was how she met the family.

while sonny was out in town, she happened to be at the wrong place the wrong time. being attacked and held hostage during a robbery. luckily for her, the was when walker and the others came to her rescue along with saving everyone else.

once again, sonny went over to the side step, thanking walker for not only saving her cow but also her during the robbery. wanting to do something in return, she offered to help out in the ranch and also offered to work at the side step as well. work as a bartender and occasionally as the bar singer. and as stubborn as she is, it worked. now living her happy simple life... maybe.

Review for Matthew Cordell's Wolf in the Snow

Genre: Caldecott Winner, Picture Book, Physical Book

Target Audience: PreK to Grade 2

Summary:

This story follows a young girl and wolf pup who get lost in a blizzard. The girl protects the small pup as she searches the white expanse and deals with wildlife. After coming across the wolf pup's mom, she is left to search for her home all alone. Or so she thinks. Overcome with cold and exhaustion, the girl collapses in the snow. The wolves, who had been following her after she returned the pup, surround her and begin to howl. The howls lead her parents to her resting place in the snow, and she is brought home safe and sound.

Justification:

I chose this picture book as my Caldecott medal winner because of its unique narrative style. Other than a few words used to indicate sounds happening in the scene, there are no words telling this story. The reader is left to interpret the story from the illustrations alone.

Evaluation:

The setting of this story is beautifully developed. The reader watches as the landscape slowly fills with snow and gradually becomes more treacherous. Cordell creates a white expanse that gives the reader the same kind of fear the young girl is experiencing. She does not know where she is and neither do we. This emphasizes the compassion possessed by the young girl as she takes on the task of caring for the wolf pup. Cordell manages to paint the perfect landscape to tell this tale.

The language, or lack thereof, used in this story is incredibly effective. It is immensely difficult to tell a story without using any narrative words, but Cordell executes it perfectly. The imagery allows the reader to interpret the young girl's feelings but tells a clear tale. The use of onomatopoeia only immerses the reader in the horror of being lost in a blizzard. An eerie silence looms over the story until the last few pages as the wolves begin to howl. Cordell achieves a quiet story that somehow says so much.

Everything in this story is told to the reader by Cordell's illustrations. Although simplistic, the images manage to tell the reader so many narrative details. Somehow, Cordell portrays the young girl's fear and empathy effectively through her quiet and difficult journey. I believe being able to physically flip through the pages produced an additional sense of suspense within the story. He creates easily interpreted emotions with the changing white circles and small black dots that make up the girl's eyes. When I picked up this picture book, I was worried that analyzing it would be difficult due to its lack of words. However, Cordell's watercolor paintings tell a clear and intricate story.

Goes rogue to find a serial killer and end up with two killers.

The Jackal case was unsolved for 6 years and it was by going against the group think that Cordell 1) flushed the Jackal out of his lair and 2) led to the discovery of a 2nd serial killer. Without the latter, the first killer would have been freed on technicality due to lack of connecting evidence. By playing on the first killer's fatherly instinct, he agreed to confessed to his killings in exchange for the safe capture of his daughter, the 2nd killer.

The twist that the Jackal was a father-daughter team explains why the show was hammering the Cordell and Stella are alike arc. This has been said since season 1 but they really want to bring it home this season.

And remember in season 3 the anarchist group Gray Flags told Liam that Cordell was dead and forced him to dig a grave to bury his brother? Good call back with this scene:

Poor Liam, I hope Ben and the Horse Rescue project are healing his soul.

Cordell looks at the picture of the man who abducted and buried him alive.

Cordell is the only one who survived. The victims on the board didn't.

See "Hollis Miller" on the right? He was the 1st victim and Cordell instinctively knew he was the key to finding the serial killer(s), and why they abducted Cordell and tried to kill him.

Even when the first killer was caught, there was no evidence connecting him to the deaths because he was that careful in covering up his track.

Only when Cordell went rogue and caused "a big mess" that the first killer was even caught, which led to his unknown accomplice who killed Hollis Miller.

Cordell going rogue for 1 week was what finally caught the killers who were elusive for 6 years and destroyed James' marriage.
