Greetings adventurers! Episode 42 of Critical Role Campaign 3 is without minis to analyze. HOWEVER, looking forward to next episode, I got some predictions and analysis to discuss with ya.

First order of business, the above photo was posted the day after Ep 42 aired. I’m not entirely sure when this photo was taken, but if we assume this photo is from the filming of Ep 43, maybe we’ll see some of the pictured minis tonight? Perhaps we are bound for a construct battle:

This model showed up during the heist competition, so maybe it’s just on Matt’s desk left over from that session. Who knows. idk, guess we’ll see.

As for the bird demon monster teased in the episode cliffhanger ending. I worry that we’ll get stuck with the awful turd bird D&D vrock that appeared twice in Campaign 2. But hopefully, we’ll get something fresh, like say, the Taki red Pathfinder Red Demon. Or the four winged supreme Pathfinder demon lord Pazuzu. OR EVEN- Critical Role’s very own shadowy demony Orthax mini.

That’s not to say I think the monster is a literal Orthax demon, just that Matt might take this opportunity to use a Orthax miniature to represent this particular bird monster. If I had to take a guess, I’d go with the Orthax. We shall see, just please, anything but that Rage of Demons Vrock.

finally finished ex-aid (it’s frankly kinda embarrassing how long it took me) so i wanna write down my many but very specific thoughts

disclaimer: fourze is the only other series i’ve completed so i can only make comparisons to that

1) costume & prop design — ok i’m not an expert obviously but tbh i wasn’t a huge fan of the suits’ design this time around. the color schemes are too… distracting and everyone kinda looked the same except for some tweaks according to their motifs. the suits where they have two gashats activated also look kinda messy?? but i get what they were going for. i honestly don’t like the gamer driver’s design at all. it’s tacky and i can’t take them seriously when they’re trudging in with that on their waists 😭 there’s a shot in ep 43 where taiga’s kneeling on the ground and hiiro’s standing next to him, but it was shot from the height of hiiro’s waist so you see his gamer driver on the top of the screen and it wasn’t a pretty shot LOL. i’m also not a fan of the fact that everyone had the same driver but i get that it’s like a console. coming from fourze from which i absolutely loved the suit and unique driver designs (especially meteor’s yes i am biased but no his design is so me) this was probably my biggest pain point about the show. then again, i’m not familiar with retro gaming so maybe it’s just me and that the designs are not my cup of tea. the gashats are cute though!

2) character dynamics — i’m the kind of person who focuses more on character dynamics than the plot and i think ex-aid really excelled in this. imo the difference between the dynamic in fourze vs ex-aid is that fourze is stronger in the group dynamic while ex-aid is stronger in the pair dynamic. although i love the KRC as a group, their pairs are mostly centered around gentaro so we didn’t get to see a lot of other pairs’ interactions as much as gentaro & [KRC member]. in ex-aid, most of the other characters’ most substantial interactions don’t revolve around emu (e.g. kiriya & kuroto, hiiro & taiga, taiga & nico, etc.) except for parado and poppy i think. of course, emu is a driving force in their character developments and vice versa, but the story focused on those specific interactions a lot more. what i’m trying to say is that i like KRC > CR as a group, but CR pairs > KRC pairs (except genryu and genken because i’m already insane about them).

3) plot — one of my favorite things about the plot is the ethical dilemmas that the characters face as doctors. how much truth do you reveal about the patient’s condition? what does it mean to be a doctor? and my favorite: “above all i must not play at god” (e.g. hiiro’s dilemma with bringing back saki who was believed to have died 5 years ago). that, coupled with dan masamune’s and kuroto’s god complexes? perfect. on that note, i love how the characters were written. i think this season’s writers really did sumn. but i’m also not great at literary analysis so i can’t elaborate more than this. side side note: i really hope iwanaga got at least one award for his acting cuz he was fantastic. looked up his wiki and found out he’s an irl genius made it even better. perfectly cast.

And what a cute name for a kitty! Is your wuji unruly and a menace? Because I’m hoping it lives up to its name! Ok. Clue 1 to who I am: I have made gif sets for mdzsnet events before. That’s your clue this week. Can’t have you figuring out who I am too quickly. We have all month to play! :P (Hoping this works in app) 

 I like nielian. I am a fan of jin ling/lan jingyi. I think there’s a lot of gremlin potential… once they both grow up a bit. Oyzz is funny but I don’t ship him. And I don’t ship lsz with people either… Oh! songxiao is so good! I love songxiao! But xue yang doesn’t have a place in there. I want JC to be happy so sangcheng and xicheng are both ok depending on context. I wouldn’t be opposed to pairing him up with other but those are the most common. I also love Aro/Ace JC headcanons. Yes, my Wuji is very unruly and a menace but in the best way. One minute I’ll be mad at him because he’s clawing his way up my curtains and the next I’ll be going awww because he just purrs almost every time I hold him! And he’s a smart gremlin! he’s figured out how to open one of the doors, so whenever we put him in that room, he’s able to open it and come back on his own. 

Hmm, your clue doesn’t narrow it down much!! There’s soo many people who have made gifs for mdzsnet events: both members and non-members! But I’m gonna keep an eye out now!

I agree with songxiao but no xue yang! Poor songxiao deserved so much better and thinking about them is just soooo painful! I’m cool with aro/ace JC, or paired up with Wen Qing/NHS/Xichen (just let JC be happy whichever way it goes!) although I don’t search out fics with any of these pairings. I’m fine with this if it’s part of a fic I’m already reading though. 

Now, on to my headcanons:

1) Yes, definitely autistic LWJ and ADHD WWX. 

2) In canon, since wwx’s core was transferred and not crushed, he can cultivate a core again post-canon and live happily ever after with LWJ. 

3) WWX comes back in his own body and appearance (although this is more an extreme preference for xz!wwx and deep discomfort for mxy-body!wwx than a headcanon)

4) Wen Qing survived and post-canon reunites with wen ning and a-yuan.

5) LWJ likes being chief cultivator and wwx likes being able to call Cloud Recesses with LWJ his home. Especially since the poor guy has either lost his previous homes or not been able to have a steady place to call home in the past, I think he’d really love having the sense of security that he can return to CR and lwj even if he goes out to travel for a while. 

6) wwx and lwj are not really *oblivious*, they know/realise at some point in canon (- I once thought of you as my soulmate - I still am!!!!!) that there’s something there but they just haven’t had the chance to talk about it or act on it with the war and then hiding and death and all the chaos during canon.

the casting was so... just right. thank you casting people for anathema.

like... i also didn’t mind the newt/anathema thing so much now. it was hard to tell in the book how much of a relationship they had after, but that smile she gave while lying in bed the morning after, that worked, it said a lot. and i like that it was her choice to burn the prophecy sequel rather than newt’s suggestion

gabriel was amusing. like.. i’m glad he wasn’t in the book. but he was great here. also really like michael and uriel. uriel was so damn beautiful.

i also would really have liked to see a mention of the fact crowley and aziraphale are both agender and potentially asexual. not even a hint of it here. buuuuuut it guess i know from the book. so.

my favourite episode was of course episode 3 with crowley and aziraphale’s 6000 year backstory. especially the 1940s bit where crowley saved the books <3

this show was was less confusing than the book too. ugh it was done so well

we didn’t see where the soldier guy went when aziraphale zapped him away!!! in the book he reappeared safely back home and went out to see his family. to be fair i don’t know whether he died and went to heaven, but it was a nice thing to happen

and they took out the Them’s bully/rival gang, who was led by the third baby from the baby swap, and who won awards for his tropical fish. at least that’s what i remember. which meant the parallel about heaven/hell being rival gangs was lost here. but the parallel between the horsemen and the them was stronger than ever and i loved that.

look, i mean, 10 out of 10, EASY.

Analysis: What Caleb's appearance means to him – CR C2 Ep61

Caleb's recent change of appearance shows how far he's come. It's as important as any new magic item or ability. It's not just an aesthetic change, it's full of subtext about how he's started overcoming his trauma. Scruffy, dirty hobo Caleb with arm bandages represents the traumatized place he started from, but he's moving past that. He's had an existential epiphany that changed him. No more dirt, beard, bandages, or rags. He's free of them. He shaved, isn't hiding his scars, and bought stylish new clothes in the style of his new home. (CR C2 Ep58 2:43:15, Ep 61 3:09:49)

We know Caleb was using the dirty hobo guise as cover (TM for CR C2 Ep61 0:16:29). It was mainly a mask and now that mask is useless. His depression also contributed to his appearance, but even there he's doing better. Feeling hopeful. (CR C2 Ep047 0:54:27). He's found a purpose again. A home. Powerful allies. There's still the long-term goal of bending reality to his will, but now he has as shorter-term goal: destroy the Cerberus Assembly, hopefully with the aid of the Kryn and the Cobalt Soul. He's not alone now.

He doesn't want back the years of being alone, scared, and hopeless that look represented. This is an important new era for him. He doesn't want to match the description of the man who betrayed the Empire in that throne room. He's safer blending in here, reimagining himself.

He’s been trapped in the guise of his trauma and now he’s working very hard to get better. To see himself and care for himself differently. This is an important change that shows his growth and victories as a character. It's an aesthetic change that carries a lot of weight. This is a new, more polished, more confident, and more stable Caleb.

This is a chance for artists to have fun with a new look and break away from the safe but deprecated official art. I look forward to seeing new costume designs as artists have a chance to put them together. Art with his old look is about the place he came from that he's trying to put behind him. Art with new looks is about his brighter future.

Hey hey hey, this is the second show I’ve seen ape Osomatsu-san this year. Seriously, no show is safe in a parody as a target for humour’s sake…Note Osomatsu-san is also by Pierrot, though, so they’re attacking themselves to some extent.

Now that they’ve pointed the Osomatsu-san reference though, I can’t believe I didn’t see the scarf colours last time! But…this is episode 5…

Oh, I kind of noticed it, but I’m probably too used to it since I watched the first season of Osomatsu-san – the blue lines are part of that show’s signature style.

Muscovado is apparently a substitute for sugar. It literally translates to “black sugar” though…

Sagami is…a former place in Japan…?

Tama River. I’m terrible at Japanese geography, so I don’t think you should be asking me about this…

Dang, apparently Pierrot is based in Mitaka, Tokyo so whatever joke I was chasing there fell flat.

Oh my…I do not see the word “Japanimation” get much mileage at all these days, but I cringe every time I see it.

It’s Pokémon Go! Wow, that’s another level of meta for sure. My hopes for resolving all the stray plot threads while maintaining that wacky sense of humour (or however I phrased it) definitely went out the window…Notice the footage is dated April 24th 20X8, which is about a week before the episode went to air if the X actually hides “2018”.

Suginami. Apparently, Bones, Sunrise and other studios are stationed there…but Pierrot isn’t.

If there’s one thing I didn’t expect in MSO, it’s the fact this show became Shirobako in a sense. I still need to get around to Shirobako, by the way…

They got Akira Ishida, Tomokazu Seki, Koichi Yamadera and some other guys to voice the Fujimotos this time. Notice there’s no crossover between the Osomatsu-san voices and the Fujimotos, which was probably intentional.

I thought there’d be a real Shinzo Chiba, but there doesn’t seem to be one…

There was a shot of Fujimoto (before the manager)! Wah! Was that there in previous episodes???

Every time people promise wardrobe malfunctions, they tend to…uh, deliver on that…

Dougo and Maasa (Magozaemon) were in class 2, if you pause at the right time. Notably, the members of class 2 were all boys, LOL. Even with the boy to the left of Magozaemon, I think that name might be pronounced “Ai” (due to this page), but it’s in manly kanji.

What a fearsome, gruesome, and awesome foe. Obviously I gotta award the Shade Mother favorite/best mini of the ep. What really strikes me about this totally custom resin printed Critical Role design is the stark contrast between the spindly torso and the rest of the bulky form. Very effective in instilling unease and fear in the players (and the audience).

Rip the Shade Mother’s fourth arm. Alas, resin printed models tend to be a tad delicate. Should be an easy fix though. In my experience, resin models break pretty cleanly. Just a bit of glue and she’ll be in fighting shape for the next boss battle.

A Green Seeker not wearing green? This is an outrage! Worst miniature of the episode by far. haha, I joke of course, I’m actually very fond of this DDM sculpt. I just sorta picked this miniature because I’ve reviewed most of the other episode miniatures in previous blog posts. And I wanted to talk about this one. Though I have not reviewed this mini in the past, it has appeared in a past CR episode and can be seen in the background of C2E1.

What I really like about the Red Hand War Sorcerer miniature is that the pose concept is very boring and yet it looks so good. It’s a very epic and dramatic take on “spellcaster holds up staff”. My compliments to the sculptor. Lots of rich details, including a rad goatee and pair of bushy eyebrows, all the better for Green Seekin’ (+2 eyebrow perception bonus for sure).

What are these creatures called? Husks? They seem like a couple of husk-like dudes. idk- Anyway, these two minis were used in the C2E67 zombie horde. Not especially good models, but interestingly, these two undead are dressed almost identically. These two have better branding than the Green Seeker minis, good on ‘em! 

Closing Thoughts

I so enjoy player interactions with terrain. Orym using the mining machinery to knock over the big rock pillar was outstanding! Hope to see more of this terrain-based-tomfoolery in future episodes.

okay okay okay new list: top ten favorite critical role eps. IN ORDER

This is difficult, holy cow! I thought about defying this post and making a list of my ten least favorite eps, but was tragically unable to come up with ten episodes I disliked so, uh. Probably should’ve seen that coming. Okay, you win, here goes nothing, I’m definitely missing a bunch, this list changes on any give day, etc. etc. etc.

10. Episode 31: Gunpowder Plot. Every now and then, despite its huge cast, the show gets to highlight one-on-one interactions between Matt and a player. Scanlan spends the better part of an hour alone, a single gnome bard trying to navigate an ambush in an enemy stronghold. The process involves turning into a triceratops, defeating a dozen guards, breathing fire, and shoving a goliath off a flaming rooftop in the rain. That sequence is legendary for a reason.

9. Episode 25: Crimson Diplomacy. Mainly the first half, although Kit Buss is wonderful as Lilith and gets more screen time in the latter half. I think this episode kind of jump-started the more serious RPing on the show (which isn’t to say there weren’t great moments earlier!)--for the first time, it felt like it wasn’t so much the players worrying about losing a character as it was the other characters worrying about losing a friend. Vax completely failing to talk his way out of the Briarwoods’ chambers, “Jenga!”, Vex storming in with double natural twenties, “Sylas!” Matt did a phenomenal job juggling the tension in order to make this encounter feel like a difficult situation that was still winnable.

8. Episode 69: Passed Through Fire. I remember seeing a post from somebody who happened upon this episode on Twitch without having seen any of the rest of the show, and they said they were blown away by the emotional extremes in this episode alone. Pretty much everyone was crying, and then pretty much everyone was crying with laughter. There’s also the wonderful letter from Kerrek, VM doing shots, and the start of several RP threads that unravel over the course of the next few episodes. Also, the cliffhanger at the end of this one jumpstarts the endgame in a big way.

7. Episode 57: Duskmeadow. This was a really unexpected episode watching live, because the entire cast had been out doing interviews about CR all day and then came straight from that to this, so it’s a wonder anyone was coherent. And yet, true to form, we get Matt playing a dozen different recurring characters expertly, we get the long-awaited confrontation between Vax and the Raven Queen, we get a bunch of other wonderful character beats, and we get one of the most genuinely startling cliffhangers in the show, with a callback that stretches 36 episodes.

6. Episode 49: A Name Is Earned. The first half is a really archetypal low-risk fight for this show in that it showcases each of the characters’ strengths and weaknesses, often in hilarious ways--Keyleth accidentally disarming a trap, Percy attempting to hit someone with a lance and finally giving up and just shooting him, Vax stealthing by sinking into the snow up to the tips of his ears, Vex sending Trinket barrelling out as a cannonball. It’s a good time. And the sphinx’s puzzle is wonderfully fun and just complicated enough to keep everyone guessing--on rewatching, it’s great to see how Matt manages to drop hints without being too obvious about it. And, of course, the utterly heartbreaking moment where the whole Craven Edge arc comes to a head with Grog accidentally hurting Pike... oh man. So good.

5. Episode 63: The Echo Tree. The climax of the Feywild arc wound up being the payoff for a lot of character beats for Vex, and I’m not sure there’s been a villain who so easily and immediately got to the root of a character’s insecurities. Matt having this baddie incorporate the details of a short story that Laura wrote about Vex was vicious. It’s also so impressive that he was able to create a character who immediately brought up all of Vex’s insecurities and worries about putting her friends in danger, about being cruel and unwanted and never belonging, and there’s still that horrible guilt when she finally does fire on him. The sequence between Vex and Sondur is phenomenal.

4. Episodes 43/44: Return to Vasselheim/The Sunken Tomb. I’m counting this one as a two-parter because it features the same guest stars and makes up a pretty coherent little standalone. Absolute goofiness with amazingly funny little interpersonal moments between party members, guests, and NPCs; I’m a big fan of any time we get to see VM from an outsider’s perspective, and Zahra and Kash’s perspective is just the right mix of fond and sardonic. We get an oddly sweet after-school-special Grog moment, we get a beholder fight... and then we get everything going just unfathomably wrong in the last thirty minutes, completely out of nowhere. Half the party’s character arcs shifted permanently because of one failed saving throw.

3. Episode 89: Curious Tides. There aren’t a lot of recent episodes on this list, just because I generally only get to watch ‘em live and so they kind of all blur together and it becomes tough to remember specific episodes. But this one stood out. Any episode that can balance the extreme of a ritual that involves promising one god you’ll dedicate your life to killing another with the extreme of a well-meaning robot sketching the entire party while they’re sleeping? It’s a good time. Intense foreshadowing of some of the plot to come alongside hilarious (and wonderfully soothing) downtime shenanigans.

2. Episode 40: Desperate Measures. The completely world-shattering shift in the previous episode was startling enough, but it’s a testament to the RPing chops of the players and DM that they took the time to carefully play out the consequences of that change. What do you do when all the major population centers are being destroyed and any attempts to fight back are squashed? How far are you willing to go for a slim chance to instantly reverse what was done? Everyone in this episode is hurting and confused and frightened, and that comes across so well in the ways they lash out at each other. Despite the absolute crushing bleakness of the situation, this episode lays the groundwork for the emotional and plot-related beats of the next fifty episodes in the form of a tattered, piecemeal sort of hope.

1. Episode 52: The Kill Box. It’s one big battle, it should by rights drag out, but it’s so good. Every single member of the cast is so invested (Travis: “I can feel my heartbeat in my face...”), and it isn’t often that the party manages to catch Matt off-guard in a combat situation, but in this episode they just keep managing to surprise him again and again and again. And even their clever strategizing wouldn’t have been enough to save the entire party from the very real threat of a wipe once things start going sideways, if it weren’t for an absurd series of natural twenties to save the day. There have been a lot of mega-epic battles on this show since then, but none have hit this absolutely unreal combination of strategy and luck. This is the game-y part of the show at its absolute best.
