This got really long so! Below the cuuuut these are my personal interpretations etc etc etc don't eat me alive <3

HE'S SO FUN

Pure Vanilla has so much self loathing and inferiority hidden under the perfect facade and he's crumbling under the strain. He's conflict avoidant and this leads to him nigh-obsessively attempting to mediate.

This in turn is misinterpreted as him being diplomatic when in reality this man is basically clinging desperately to a semblance of peace because he's terrified of having to lead through war again, to have to make sacrifices of other cookies.

You see him change! You see him go from a child/teenager with little filter in his early life and his school days, but after seeing how his help set White Lily on the path that caused so much harm, it's like he turned inwards. White Lily's path was too active, required too many sacrifices, too much to be given--surely there was another answer to her question of how to help all of cookiekind, something that required less...eggs be broken.

So he begins to search. And people begin to look to him as a beacon, and I'm willing to bet this scared him at first.

But he adapts. He's a shepherd--they guide sheep, they protect them, they care for them. What are cookies if not more intelligent and unruly sheep, at the end of the day?

So he protects. He guides. He herds. He cares for the people who flock to his stability and his kindness.

And it snowballs. He's chosen. He's more and more of a figurehead, lacking personhood--Pure Vanilla Cookie! The Hero of Truth! Pure Vanilla Cookie! A vaunted healer with a heart of gold! Pure Vanilla Cookie, our wise and benevolent king!

Kings need make sacrifices.

Kings cannot protect the whole flock.

Pure Vanilla is not a king. But he learns.

He adapts.

He pretends.

And then, it all comes back full force.

In a day when he's gone, Dark Enchantress devastates his kingdom.

The moment the shepherd looks away, the wolves flock to tear at the hapless sheep.

And he has no option, in his mind, other than to end this himself.

To protect that what he has left (his friends, fellow shepherds of the downtrodden and the weak) with all he has.

To kill the wolf whatever it takes.

And you know what? It gets worse.

He falls into despair. Locked away within a timeless abyss, nothing left to do but agonize. Over, and over, until the Light of Truth calls to him.

Pure Vanilla Cookie. Take up your crook and guide once more. Pure Vanilla Cookie. Won't you heal my aches? Pure Vanilla Cookie. I need advice...

Forever drawn thin, forever with a foot in both worlds, forever seeking a solution that benefits everyone (an impossible solution).

He cannot escape his legacy. Even abdicating the throne isn't enough to remove this dynamic.

But he can't run, either. That's cowardly, and Pure Vanilla's soft heart of gold (a bleeding heart, staked to his sleeve) won't let him turn his back on those who need him.

They all need him.

Oh, sweet Pure Vanilla Cookie. Kind Pure Vanilla Cookie. Too giving for your own good, they tore you to pieces with their 'love'.

Pre awakening PV is such a funny and weird little specimen that I analyze in my lab (my brain) all the time. I love him because of how flawed he is and how it contradicts what he's supposed to represent

He's seen as this wise, mature, and leading beacon for everyone, but you take a good look at him and he's just trying his best, constantly trying to make peace with everyone and find mutual grounding which leads him to make the wrong choices. He tries his best to understand his friends but yet he feels soooo distant from all of them

I will fight to the death for PureShadow because they (and the other Beasts/Ancients) can be such a powerful narrative about how they are the same, but also different, and therefore can help each other. A lot of people dislike the pairing due to its violent nature but still, I think many people also say that because they view PV as helpless or 'too gentle,' and therefore not capable of being in complex dynamics. PureShadow is not meant to be perfect, nor is it---at least to me---supposed to be a toxic pairing meant to simply be traumaporn, but I do think it could develop into something that becomes an interesting exploration for both characters' stories. I think within the right environment, it could be a very fascinating narrative about how the Beasts weren't ready for the power given to them, and therefore were doomed to be corrupted from the beginning, and the ancients were procured inheritors who had already proven themselves to be strong enough. I find that people also dwindle SM down to a one-dimensional "evil to be evil" villain, but we've been given various breadcrumbs that say much otherwise. But then again, maybe I'm getting too analytical about talking gingerbread cookies.
