Gargoyles the Movie: Heroes Awaken (1994)
Tumblr media
Back in 1995, I distinctly remember seeing a VHS of Gargoyles: The Movie at the video rental store. I picked it as my movie of the week and was disappointed when I realized it was only the 5-part series premiere edited together. This means we’re not really talking about a movie here, but we sort of are as well. Let's consider it a made-for-TV movie for this review's sake. As that, how does this fare?
In 994 A.D., Scotland, Castle Wyvern repels any invaders thanks to its stone gargoyles, which come to life at nighttime. Despite his frightening appearance, their leader, Goliath (voiced by Keith David) desires only cooperation between his clan and the humans who defend them while they are petrified during the day. Following a betrayal from within the castle walls, most of the gargoyles are destroyed and the few survivors are frozen in stone until the castle they defend rises above the clouds. A thousand years later, in Manhattan, billionaire David Xanatos (Jonathan Frakes) has moved the castle above his headquarters. Awoken in an unfamiliar world, they find a friend in Elisa Maza (Salli Richardson), an open-minded police detective.
Don’t expect the visuals to rival a theatrical production or even something like Nickelodeon’s The Last Airbender. While the characters are consistently on-model, I spotted at least one coloring error in the second half of the picture and there is more than one instance of the stone gargoyles looking pretty different from their awakened state - the "statues" are painted as static background elements so the stone texture and the angles of their muscles/limbs are much more detailed than anything in the moving foreground. Finally, this is a pilot so while it is self-contained, many threads will only pay off in later seasons, such as the gargoyle eggs Goliath leaves with Princess Katharine (Kath Soucie) and her wizard (Jeff Bennett) (not sure why he did that, in hindsight). That said, this is a strong debut.
There are many characters in this story and the gargoyles other than Goliath - they name themselves Lexington (Thom Adcox Hernandez), Hudson (Ed Asner), Brooklyn (Jeff Bennett again), Broadway (Bill Fagerbakke), and Bronx (Frank Welker) - are more established than given character arcs. This makes Goliath the protagonist and the others supporting characters. I’ve found that in most children’s television series, the leader turns out to be the least interesting member of a team but that’s not the case here. Goliath is at once trusting of humans and wary of opening up. He can be calm and collected but is also prone to fits of rage and frequently talks of vengeance against those who’ve wronged him. He adapts well to his new setting but shows no affinity for modern-day tech like some of his comrades. He's many things at once, which keeps you watching and wondering what's next. There are no obvious character arcs within him.
Gargoyles rather elegantly uses the limitations imposed upon it as a boy’s property to its advantage. All of the gargoyles in Manhattan are male, guaranteeing there won’t be any weird “should we start repopulating?” discussions. It also adds an extra level of tragedy to the story by making them the last of their kind. Conveniently, this makes Elisa the lone female hero of the show/film without making her a token. If there’s a secondary protagonist, it’s her (which gives you a bit of a Beauty and the Beast vibe) and unlike other shows, her status as a colored woman does not make her feel like a quota. It should also be noted that Xanatos is a person of color as well, making this a show with more POC than Caucasians. It may be because most of the cast are non-humans but that’s still something I feel is worth noting.
The story features plenty of varied action. There are battles set in 994 and others in the present as well - some of which don’t include the gargoyles at all and allow the human characters to shine. There are twists and turns as allies become enemies and new partnerships are formed. The general tone is tragic and adventurous with a few bits of comedy thrown in here and there. Best of all, this is a wholly original property. The show was conceived as an answer to Batman: The Animated Series but rather than dig up some available superhero property (this was years before Disney acquired Marvel), it's is something new.
Tumblr media
My favorite scene of the film is an interaction between Goliath and his mate, Demona (Marina Sirtis), who managed to survive the thousand-year slumber. During a mission for Xanatos, she prepares to throw an unconscious guard out of an airlock to his death but is stopped by Goliath. “The centuries have made you weak, Goliath,” she says. The thing is, very little time has actually passed for the winged warrior. He’s been frozen in stone. He HASN’T changed but that one sentence shows how much she HAS. It’s a nice subtle exchange.
Tumblr media
I am coming into this review biased. Though I haven’t seen the show in years, I remember it well and certainly, remember how it made me feel in 1994. It played right into my fascination with mythology & monsters and I attribute my affection for Shakespeare (the series draws inspiration from Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, among others) to the show. It had a lasting impression on me and I believe it has the power to enchant young audiences once more. (July 28, 2022)

Live from New York, It’s Dylan O’Brien!
Tumblr media
The 33-year-old plays Dan Aykroyd in Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night, and he’s not sure he hit it out of the park. But he’s okay with that.
DYLAN O’BRIEN HAS led movies that grossed hundreds of millions of dollars at the box office. He’s shared the screen in a thriller with Michael Keaton (2017’s American Assassin), exchanged jokes with Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson (in 2013’s The Internship), been a long-running MTV teen heartthrob (in 92 episodes of Teen Wolf), voiced a Transformer (in 2018’s Bumblebee), and, hell, went toe to toe with Larry David while playing himself on Curb Your Enthusiasm. At 33, he’s accomplished a hell of a lot.
By the time we meet at Men’s Health’s New York City offices to chat on an early September Friday, I’ve already seen a lot of his work. I’ve always liked the way his relaxed demeanor on-screen fits with an undeniable movie-star look—and that holds true in his latest project, Saturday Night (in select theaters now and out nationwide on October 11), in which he stars as comedy legend and original Saturday Night Live cast member Dan Aykroyd; the movie is a depiction of the chaotic 90 minutes before the very first episode of SNL. But I wasn’t sold on his sheer determination—the pure conviction in his character—until I learned that, like myself, he’s a long-suffering fan of the New York Jets.
“I get psyched for the Jets,” he tells me, rocking a full beard, a T-shirt, and a pair of comfortable lacrosse shorts. As he finishes his thought, his eyes light up, but they maintain the slightest sense of eternal frustration behind them. “Even though it’s always like, Jesus Christ.”
Misfortunes of past football seasons aside, O’Brien is as hyped as he’s ever been for the season to come—he’s already done all of his fantasy drafts, though he feels better about some than others—but right now he has one potential problem: He’s going to be in Toronto, for the Toronto International Film Festival, on the night of the Jets season opener. But don’t worry, he’s got it figured out. Saturday Night’s premiere is on Tuesday, and his press schedule on Monday (when the Jets are set to play the San Francisco 49ers) concludes at 5:30 p.m.
“I’m like, I’m going to a pub. I’m getting out of the area, and I’m just going to sit and have some beer and watch the Jets on Monday night all by myself,” he says with a huge smile on his face. “It’s going to be awesome.”
It’s a relatable feeling—for most Jets fans, there’s no happier time than before the season starts, before the annual feelings of dread and doom start to set in. (The Jets would wind up losing to the 49ers, 32-19, in their Week 1 MNF matchup.) But, as Jets fans have learned so well to do over the years, we move on.
O’Brien has a long career behind him, but a long career ahead of him, too. In addition to his upcoming role in Saturday Night (which has earned strong reviews in the early goings), he’s also got the M. Night Shyamalan-produced Caddo Lake premiering on Max this month, and Anniversary, in which he stars alongside Diane Lane and Kyle Chandler, coming at some point in the near future. (It doesn’t currently have a release date.) O’Brien is the kind of actor who elevates the project he’s in, even when the project is already really, really good—but if there’s anything being a Jets fan says about someone, it’s that they know how to adjust, adapt, and bounce back. And in an industry as fickle as show business—which is put on full display in Saturday Night—that’s about as important a quality as any to have in your back pocket.
Ahead of the release of several of the biggest and most exciting projects of his career, O’Brien sat down with Men’s Health to discuss how he keeps himself sane and centered, prepping to play a comedy icon, and some of those casting rumors about him out there on the Internet.
MEN’S HEALTH: What kind of routines do you maintain for your mental and physical health?
DYLAN O’BRIEN: I don’t go to the gym. I’m not a gym guy, but that doesn’t mean I don’t exercise or train or anything. I would say I go in and out of that. I’m usually the type who’s either on a pretty consistent routine and trying to hit it hard and take care of myself for a period of time, and then I’ll let it go for a little bit. Some of that’s influenced by my schedule, too. When you go to work, it’s hard to keep up some kind of regimen. But when I’m home and I’m in between jobs, I’ve become a very domesticated individual. I love grocery shopping and cooking my own meals.
MH: What’s your favorite thing to make?
DOB: If I had to pick one thing, I love, to the soul, making a soup. It’s literally the first thing I’ll do when I go anywhere to settle in. Just a homemade chicken soup, with a chicken carcass, and get creative with the veggies.
MH: Do you have a mental health routine?
DOB: That’s typically what drives the eating and the exercising. I always feel best when I’m in a nice routine and taking care of myself. As I’ve gotten into my 30s, sleep is so important, and periods of laying off alcohol are so important. Just treating your body right and getting rest. I like to do a cold plunge session, and that’s very meditative for me. I’ll follow the simple program of “exhaust the body, relax the mind” when I’m going right.
“I was self-conscious that I DIDN’T LOOK LIKE HIM, that I DIDN’T SOUND LIKE HIM, that I thought people wouldn’t think me—Dan Aykroyd.”
MH: I totally understand the concept of using whatever levels us as therapy. Sometimes after work I just need to put the Yankees on and do absolutely nothing in order to fully detox and feel right.
DOB: That’s my soul. The Mets… obviously, baseball is a nearly every day thing. And even when the Mets are not going well, what’s soothed me since I was closely following them when I was a kid is [broadcasters Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez, and Ron Darling]. Literally, even just throwing the game on in the background while I’m getting dinner ready and just listening to those guys talk baseball—that settles me to my core. I’m totally with you on that.
MH: Is watching sports your main way of decompressing at the end of a long day?
DOB: If it’s baseball season, yeah, nightly Mets is nice. If I’m working, I’ve been known to be on jobs and randomly be bingeing some reality show while I’m on it. It’s such a decompressor at the end of the day. I love reality TV.
MH: What’s your favorite?
DOB: Of all time?
MH: Yeah.
DOB: Well, it’s between Jersey Shore and Vanderpump Rules as far as the all-timers. I’ve been a longtime OG Vanderpump fan, pre-Scandoval, and I just think that show’s a masterpiece. And Jersey Shore is a masterpiece, too. I did a film, Ponyboi, that’s very Jersey-centric, and so I drilled all of the first four seasons of Jersey Shore. My whole routine for that movie, when I needed to decompress, was just working out and watching reality TV. I lost a lot of weight, too, for that movie, and I was just trying to make my little chicken breast, and eat my salad, and work out, and watch Jersey Shore.
MH: Let’s talk about Saturday Night. How would you describe your version of Dan Aykroyd?
DOB: It might be the thing most open to interpretation I’ve ever done. By that, I mean it really was just leaping out of the nest. I’m playing this real person, but [director Jason Reitman] had no intention of just copying the person coming in. He really wanted everyone to have their own spin on the person, which, if you’re overthinking it, can be tough to do because it can be very easy to do. If you’re like, I’m just going to watch my guy’s interviews and sketches, then you can kind of fall into imitation. As far as I know, I was just doing what I thought he was like. But I don’t fucking know. That instinct was that Jason was always telling me what to run with. He was big on not overpreparing, not overwatching things, and not impersonating. I’m curious to hear people’s take, because I don’t really know. I just went with my gut.
MH: Was there one signature quality of Dan you wanted to capture?
DOB: A very earnest intelligence—he’s so quick, it was exhausting. I would always say how exhausted I was, because I’m playing someone who’s way quicker than I am, and so I’m constantly operating at a speed I can’t operate at, because he’s so sharp and fast and he never fumbles and he never curses. He never bides time. You know what I mean?
MH: Absolutely.
DOB: He’s so precise with his improvisation and his comedic skills. I came away with such a larger appreciation than I even had for his genius. And he was so young—he was a kid. He was 23 on that first season of SNL. I never processed him as being too worried about too much, which was a funny contrasting energy to the very tense atmosphere of the film in the hour and a half before showtime. He’s so loose.
MH: It’s interesting you say that, because it’s something I totally clocked, too—Dan is kind of the calm part of a storm that includes people like Chevy Chase (Cory Michael Smith) and John Belushi (Matt Wood). How did you maintain that presence as the movie’s level head?
DOB: My way of achieving that, with permission from Jason, was to embrace this quality in myself that I didn’t originally associate to Dan—that I only then did after Jason pointed it out to me—which was to have an aloofness on set. I feel very relaxed in that space. In a way, I wasn’t too worried. But that comes with the caveat that I entered this process thinking I was so wrong for the part.
MH: Why did you think that?
DOB: I don’t know. I was self-conscious that I didn’t look like him, that I didn’t sound like him, that I thought people wouldn’t think me—Dan Aykroyd. And I guess it was an insecurity that I would be skewered for being miscast or something. But even with that insecurity, again, I’m still so happy to be there and, like, whatever, fuck it. I don’t care if that’s the response. I’m boned, but whatever. It’s great to be here and get to do this, and what a blast of a thing to get to be a part of. So, weirdly enough, that type of aloofness amidst other people having to handle some really tense stuff was what Jason was telling me to embrace.
MH: Have you met Dan?
DOB: No. Not yet. I’m supposed to meet him at TIFF. And apparently that will be both of our first times seeing the movie.
MH: That will be great.
DOB: There was a moment early on, when you go into something like this, you’re playing someone, you imagine that they might want to speak to you. They might be hell-bent on speaking to you, they might be crazy about getting their hands in it, or they might be totally hands off. And to hear that he was so not worried about it, if anything, was the first moment I was like, Oh, maybe we’re right. Because I would’ve met with him, too, but I also didn’t need it. I would have if he insisted. I’d be like, Of course—I’ve got to do that. But I vibe with the fact that he was like, no, let the kid go do it. That’s how I feel like I would react.
MH: What’s your favorite movie of his?
DOB: I was a big Blues Brothers kid. I did the Blues Brothers for my talent show in third grade. I was also a big Tommy Boy kid.
MH: I’ve loved a lot of the comedic stuff that you’ve gotten to do, including your Curb Your Enthusiasm guest appearance. What was working with Larry like?
DOB: Oh, it’s just a blast. He’s a Jets fan, too—I remember that was our first conversation we had. It was like I was just talking to a buddy, at [the popular TriBeCa bar] Walker’s, or something about the Jets. I’ve worked with a lot of comedians, and that space can be weird. The energy can be very overstimulating, and those personalities can tend to be really loud and competing. It can be a very odd atmosphere sometimes. Going to work with a guy like that… I was like, Who knows, he could be a fucking total narcissist tycoon, and he wasn’t. He couldn’t have been more generous, couldn’t have been quicker to laugh at someone else and let someone else have the spotlight. I couldn’t think more of the guy. He’s amazing.
MH: It’s been almost a decade since your accident on the Maze Runner set. When you look back at your recovery, how has that experience most impacted your life?
DOB: It was a life-changing incident. I’ve approached everything differently, you could say, particularly with regards to standing my ground on set. It’s very commonplace in the culture for young actors to be controlled, and the way they strive to do that is by always being like, Oh, don’t become difficult. Don’t be a pain in the ass. Or Are you complaining, are you being difficult? Things like that. I learned after the accident to not conflate taking care of yourself and looking after yourself. Don’t let them manipulate you into thinking that is being difficult, because I can look at that day and know I was a 24-year-old kid who was raising concerns about how we were approaching things, and they were not listened to, they were not respected. And then what happened happened. And by all accounts, it was all pretty gotten away with, I would say, as well. It’s taught me that, at the end of the day, in these spaces, you have your own back, and that’s the most you can rely on. I just turned 33. I’ve been doing this for 15 years. I know the person I am, and the character I bring to set, and the way I treat people and the way that I treat a workspace, and I know I’m not difficult. I know I’m not an asshole. I know I was trying to protect myself that day, and so I’ve just never forgotten that. That’s always rung true as being the thing to hold with me.
“It’s taught me that, at the end of the day, in these spaces, you HAVE YOUR OWN BACK, and that’s the MOST YOU CAN RELY ON.”
MH: And this is something that’s always in the back of your mind, just knowing that you’ve had this experience and it’s shaped where you are now.
DOB: It helps me. It’s a shame. It’s a shame that it had to be that for me. To build this armor for myself of just being like, No, man, I’m going to look after myself, I’m going to take care of myself, and there’s nothing wrong with that. There’s nothing wrong with asking questions. There’s nothing wrong with bringing ideas, even if we’re talking creatively. It’s our job to bring ideas. There’s nothing wrong with raising concerns. There’s nothing wrong with being like, “I think we could do this better, I think we could do this differently.” You know what I mean? That’s the process. It’s a collaborative process. It’s a creative process, but also you’re dealing with big dangerous shit sometimes, too.
MH: Throughout the years, you’ve been rumored to become the Flash and Spider-Man. Is there any truth to the rumors?
DOB: No, never.
MH: Nothing?
DOB: No, none of it. Yeah.
MH: Is that of interest if an opportunity ever came up? Are you a comic book person?
DOB: I never have been. But I wouldn’t rule out anything. Certainly, it’s not of interest to me as of now. Maybe when I was 20 and they were rebooting Spider-Man—I was excited about that. But I didn’t even get past the casting pre-call or anything. No, none of those rumors have ever been true. I didn’t even know there were rumors. I just thought they were people just putting it out there.
MH: People put a bunch of stuff out there and then places pick it up and then stuff snowballs.
DOB: None of anything I’ve ever read about myself is true. So, if you want to use that template, that’s my experience.
MH: So what is of interest to you? What’s your dream?
DOB: There are obviously filmmakers I’ve loved since I was a kid who I would love to work with. I always want to challenge myself, and I always want to go with my gut and trust when I respond to something, I’m responding to it for a reason. Trust that when I’m scared of something, maybe that’s a good thing I should lean into. Try to find the new filmmakers, and try to champion them, and be a part of the early parts of the careers of our new wave of filmmakers. Try to champion original things as much as I can, too. I feel like that’s obviously trending so much further and further away, and towards extinction, that I just feel like it’s important to lend yourself to those things when you can, as much as you can.

[ … ] ❀ you’re not from around here , are you? i figured because you totally just missed atlas shephard walking by. don’t tell me you don’t know who he is ? they kind of look like michael cimino and i could be wrong but i think that they might be twenty-five years old right now. they’ve been living in palmview for the last three years. and i don’t know if anyone has ever told them this before but they kind of remind me of chandler bing from friends. if you stick around the town long enough you might catch them in action working at heights community center as an event coordinator. you see this town isn’t really that big of a place, some folks like to call them the robin of palmview! they took a liking to the name too after a while, go figure. oh crap, they must have heard me yapping. they’re coming this way. i got to warn you though, rumor has it they can pretty circumspect at times. i wouldn’t take it too seriously though, from the times i’ve spoken to them they seemed pretty allocentric to me. we see each other all the time since they live in that two bedroom apartment beside me over in mango bay. i better leave you to it. it was nice meeting you!
STATS:
full name :       atlas orion shephard nickname(s) :       n / a birthplace :       ranchos palos verdes, california date of birth :       august 30, 1999 parentage :       david shephard ii & giulia shephard sibling(s) :      marco shephard-yang (36), sadie shephard (32), david shephard iii (29), scout shephard (27) relationship status :       single gender identity :       cis man ( he/him ) sexual orientation :       heterosexual faceclaim :  michael cimino
BACKGROUND: (tw: adoption, mentions of neglect)
alejandro maldonado is six months old when the state of california deems his parents unfit to take care of their son. the social worker in charge of his case knows a family looking to add a member to their family. a baby, no less.
so, alejandro luis maldonado guzman becomes little atlas orion shephard ( the shephards feel as though they're honoring his birth family by keeping his first initial a ).
however, joining a family with two other kids is no easy feat -- especially when the parents have no intention of actually caring for their children.
the shephards are well off business people, which is how they get away with being such absent parents. they live in a big house, they take elaborate christmas cards, and they attend a school event here and there when it's convenient for them.
it wasn't all bad, though. as they grew up, sadie would read her assigned chapter books to him and clark would allow him to scribble on a sheet of paper next to him while he was making his own sketch.
there were a few nannies in the picture, but that all went away when the shephards decided the oldest (sadie and marco, now that he'd joined the family) were old enough to start taking care of the rest of them.
the shephards were trying to craft the perfect kid, which means they all got wildly different extra curriculars assigned to them. atlas had originally gotten soccer, but after his first game where he cried because he got hit with a ball, his dad was too embarrassed to take him back. they enrolled him in piano lessons shortly after ( because at least then he could entertain their friends ).
he loved all of his siblings, but in a young atlas' eyes, marco and sadie were not his siblings. all of his earliest memories include marco playing outside with him and sadie helping him with his homework. they were very much surrogate parents, while clark and scout were actually his siblings. it was every day the oldest two were mediating a fight between any combination of the youngest three.
being the youngest of five made it very hard to find himself outside of the shadow of the other four. it was a lot to live up to. who was atlas shephard ?
atlas, to put it nicely, had a very needy personality. he needed a lot of attention and reassurance, and he was not getting that from his parents. he'd get it from his siblings when they had it to give, but sometimes they just didn't.
living in the shadow of his siblings just made him awkward. he mumbles, he second guesses himself, he frequently puts his foot in his mouth… if he couldn’t even navigate his household, how was he going to navigate the world?
marco and sadie did the best they could, but atlas could just never understand why the parents who went through all the trouble of adopting him couldn't just spend a day with him. insecurity grew within him, and he was constantly changing his personality to see what would get him the most attention. he'd tried succeeding academically like sadie, rebelling ( in the best way atlas could ) like clark, and talking their ear off like scout. at the end of the day, his parents were simply not interested in it. and, even if they were, they had FIVE CHILDREN -- they had so many people to give attention to.
he wonders why the people who give birth to him hadn't been interested in working to keep him, why the people who supposedly wanted him didn't want him.
he's thirteen years old when marco moves away, and it shakes him a bit. he feels himself shrink without the man who helped shape who he was. beginning middle school around the same time was kind of a nightmare for atlas.
still, it's around that time he finds a little bit of himself. he realizes people care less about you when you make them laugh. he wasn't exactly gunning for class clown or anything, but the jokes and sarcasm come out easily enough when you hate yourself don't take yourself too seriously.
for the most part, he coasts through school. gets decent grades ( and has access to good tutors when he doesn't ), continues to play the piano ( but has no interest in composing his own music ), and makes enough jokes to distract outsiders from the insanity that is his family.
when it’s time for college, he asks himself: what is the best form of revenge for a family who only cares about appearances? actually caring for those with less. he’d never understood his parents obsession with raising money to LOOK GOOD and not actually caring about those who needed the help.
he goes to school for business, just to buy himself time. worse comes to worse, he starts his own business to help others.
he's nineteen when sadie leaves for florida, and it's yet another hit to his core. he still lives at home and is commuting to school, so he notices as each sibling leaves the nest. well, everyone but him.
and, even as one of the last to leave the shephard house, it still isn't enough to bring him much attention. there's small talk with his parents over coffee in the morning, but that's really the extent of it. they pay for his education, and he goes. it's transactional for all of them.
once he graduates, he makes his way to palmview ( definitely following sadie ). during his tour of the town, he makes a point to stop by the community center and sees they need an event coordinator. it seems like the perfect gig, and although he’s young, it doesn’t seem like many were jumping at the chance for the job.
he’s three years into the job, and he’s loved getting to meet the people in his town– kids and adults alike. he doesn’t often participate in his events, but he’s always there to see how others are enjoying them ( and to make sure everything runs smoothly ).
PERSONALITY:
as stated above, he’s quite awkward !!! either doesn’t think before he speaks or thinks too hard before he speaks … no in between
lowkey loves attention ( was obvs deprived of it ) but he’ll never admit thattttttt
can be a bit of an emo boy when the topic of family is brought up -- he sees the good in all of his siblings and loves them each for who they are, but that didn't make their situation any less difficult.
has a love / hate relationship with the winter months … has fond memories of the holidays growing up, but also knows they were jus for show … but also loves how busy the holiday season is !!!
has kind of settled into the “normal guy” role … He’s Just A Guy
very caring, though… has definitely lost a lot of money replacing jackets / hoodies he’s just handing out to people ….. quite literally giving the jacket off his back …..
he’s not a confident speaker in general … not the thoughts he shares … not the volume he speaks at … is always mumbling your chara will have to tell him to SPEAK UP !!!

Poly Heathers & Veronica and Their Families
TW: Child Abuse, Child Neglect, Ableism, that kinda shit
Chandler:
Both of Chandler's parents were massive dicks
Her father, Christian Chandler, was your stereotypical rich douchebag, caring only for money and status, all else mattered little
He came from a long line of successful businessmen in the steel industry, the family company being handed down from male heir to male heir
He also came from a extremely fundamentalist Christian sect and held beliefs in line with this religion
He expected his first child to be a boy, despite the doctors telling him the contrary many times, and was in such disbelief and anger when Chandler was born that he attempted to harm the newborn, having to be sedated and removed from the room, only escaping the cops being called on him due to a generous donation he made to the hospital
As such he quickly turned to despair and to his church, where the priest hooked him up with a nice Christian girl who gave him a son, being Chandler's half-brother, Michael
He never divorced his wife due to his belief that it was a sin, but for all intents and purposes they were
The church took Christian's side, blaming the birth of a girl on some sin that she committed and kicked her out, forcing her to seek refuge in another establishment
Chandler saw him only five times in her entire life that she can remember, and none of them were any good
The first four were times he came to her house, drunk as hell, to berate and attack her and her mother, the latter refusing to step in to prevent any harm from coming to Chandler
He came once when she was 7, again when she was 11, a third time at 12, and a fourth and final time at 15
She still has the scars of where he hit her with beer bottles
To this day Chandler still doesn't understand why he even came, he had everything he wanted, a son, a meek, submissive wife, they shouldn't have even been on his mind
The fifth and final time that she saw him was the day before JD blew him up, when news of her engagement to David reached him
She assumes that he sought to reunite with her in an attempt to get closer to David's father, who owned a rival steel company, seeing the opportunity for a partnership
The way he acted during those fateful few hours was unlike how she'd ever seen him before
He was polite, courteous, respectful, she had a hard time linking this man with the one who terrorized her in her nightmares
But she could see through the facade and understood that he was not being genuine in his attempts to reconnect, and so she convinced him to go with her mother and David to check out a private jet for her wedding, unknowingly strapped with explosives
In the will she had Veronica forge she had the majority stocks that he held willed to her, and she often thinks of how much he would hate that she took control instead of his son, and it makes her cackle with glee
Her mother, Laura Chandler, also grew up in the same fundamentalist Christian sect
At an early age she was betrothed to her future husband, Christian, and the two seemingly had a good marriage, that is until their daughter was born
Like her husband she also believed that they were going to have a boy, refusing the doctor's wisdom and instead choosing to listen to their priest, who reassured them that God would gift them with a beautiful baby boy
When Heather was born she violently sobbed and refused to breastfeed her, forcing the hospital to find a wet nurse
She named her Heather because she detested the flower, like she detested her daughter
After the birth she turned to the church for guidance, but they simply told her that she had committed some grave sin and had her removed from the church, her family cutting off ties with her
This caused her to fall into an even deeper depression, neglecting the baby Heather and almost causing her to die of starvation
It was only because one of Laura's friends at her new church realized that she hadn't been in weeks and came to check on her only to see the emaciated child that she survived
Laura was only able to escape the child neglect charges due to her massive wealth allowing her to bribe the police and judge (Christian had given her substantial wealth in exchange for her leaving him alone)
The friend brought Laura to church where she recovered slowly but surely, but that is not to say things improved much
Chandler grew up being detested by her mother, who believed wholeheartedly that she had committed some kind of sin and that God had punished her with a daughter which denied her her rightful place as a wife in a good Christian marriage
Her mother sought to impose the same Christian values she was taught onto the child, but Heather proved to be a brash, independent child who hated being told what to do
Laura dealt with this in the only way she knew how, physically
Heather was often beaten with the Bible, denied food, forced to sit outside in the cold for hours with minimal clothing, cut with shards from broken wine bottles, and screamed at for hours about how she was a curse from the devil
Heather quickly learned not to disobey her mother
However, she also refused to internalize any of the lessons she was taught, quite the opposite
If her mother told her that she needed to be meek so she could find a nice husband, she would be loud and bossy, etc.
Her mother only changed her tone when she found out that Chandler had found herself a nice young man to marry, gleeful with the knowledge that soon she would be rid of her curse
It filled Chandler with glee to know that her death was excruciatingly painful and that if hell does exist, she would be there
No family member on her father's side will acknowledge her existence, and all family on her mother's side cut off contact with her mother and by extension her, so the only remaining family that Chandler has is her half-brother, Michael
Michael unfortunately took after his father, becoming a spoiled brat who expected to snap his fingers and have everything go his way
He was spoiled by his parents who gave him anything he wanted at his request, ironically forgoing teaching the Christian value of humility
Chandler only met him in person twice, first at her father's funeral and again when she was sued by him
The first time saw him disrupt the proceedings when he was informed that he was being left a singular dollar from his father instead of the majority stocks like he was expecting, and he began screaming at Chandler and almost attacked her
Thankfully Chandler was prepared for this outcome and knew she had to play the meek girl who lost her parents and fiancee on the same day, and her tears turned the crowd against Michael who was removed from the service and kicked from the church
Still enraged, he attempted to take her to court, claiming that there was a mistake and that he deserved the stocks
With some well-timed bribes from Chandler and some forged evidence from Veronica, the judge ruled against him, causing him to flip out and attempt to attack the judge, landing him in jail for contempt of court and assault
Last she heard, Michael would screech to anyone who would listen that the she-devil Heather stole his money and that he was working to get it all back and blah blah blah
She doesn't consider him her brother however, if anything JD is her older brother
He looks out for her, lends his ears if she ever needs to vent, helps her get revenge on her enemies, all things that a brother would do
Duke:
Like Chandler, Duke's parents are also pieces of shit
Both parents come from immigrants, their parents having left South Korea in the 60s to escape Park Chung Hee's regime, feeling to the United States
Entering in through California, both families made their way inland as time went on, eventually making their way to central Ohio
Her father's family adopted the last name Duke, after old English nobility, to better fit in the majority white area they found themselves in, as well as abandoning their traditional naming patterns in favor of something more Western
The families both opened up restaurants, bringing an authentic Asian cuisine to an area that didn't have so much as a Panda Express, and as such both became very popular
However, it didn't start out that way
For many years both struggled to remain open, the residents of the area thinking that the food was weird and gross
Duke's grandparents spent lots of time and money on advertising, showing the people what the food looked like and that it was delicious, getting their big break when after much deliberation they were able to convince a food critic to come visit their restaurants, taste-testing both to see which better
The visits were televised and shown on the local news, which drew more people to the restaurants, who then loved it and told others, starting a cascading effect
As you can imagine the two families hated each other and saw the other as a rival to their business
But her parents, in a scene straight out of Romeo and Juliet, fell in love, and unlike the Shakespearian version their families were able to overcome their differences and merged their restaurants together, bringing the best of both into a single one
The business became extremely profitable, and while not on the level of lets say a Steel Company majority shareholder or Jewelry Store Owner, they still made a crap ton of money
Her father, Nathan, ran the business side of the restaurant, ensuring that bills were paid and everything was up to code while her mother, Lily, worked as Head Chef
Her grandparents made sure to impart the value of hard work onto her parents, and this value was something that they made sure was imparted onto their children as well
However, in between generations something happened, and hard work became success, meaning that as far back as Heather can remember her parents constantly demanded success
What happened was that the children grew up wealthy, the restaurants having achieved commercial success for many years before they were born, leading them to not understanding how much work went into getting the store, advertisement, etc., as they were simply handed ownership on a silver platter when they became old enough
They didn't understand that hard work didn't always mean instant success, and that sometimes no matter how hard you try it doesn't always work out in the way you expected
Duke has two older siblings, Hebe who is four years older than Duke and Henry who is two years older
All of the women in Duke's family were named after flowers
Both of her siblings began to succeed early in life, mastering Korean and English at young ages and learning to read and write in both languages before even starting preschool, much to their parent's praise
However, when their third child came around and struggled, they were less than understanding, often taking out their frustrations on her physically
Unbeknownst to any of them Duke had dyslexia and ADHD and couldn't just sit down and learn, but even if they had known Duke would be denied any accommodations, her parents seeing it as a weakness that she simply needed to power through
Neither parent believed that mental health or illnesses were real things, blaming Heather's difficulties solely on laziness and lack of ability
She had to attend special remedial classes to help her catch up, something that her parents were greatly ashamed of, a fact which they never failed to mention to her
She was constantly compared to her siblings, told that she was dumb for failing to do anything right, and given harsh punishments if she failed to accomplish whatever task her parents set for her
She was often hit, her things taken, destroyed, or thrown away, denied food or water, forced to sleep on the floor, among many other disgusting things to do to anyone, let alone a child under 5
A deep resentment arose between Duke and the rest of her family, as the other children were treated well as academics came to them easily, while Heather struggled under the weight of the expectations placed on her
They were so ashamed of her that they refused to let her work in the restaurant for fear of her screwing up and tanking their reputation
Once Duke joined the newly-formed Heathers and was able to acquire the assistance of nerds to do her homework for her, her parents and siblings became much nicer to her, but by that time Duke saw how shallow they really were, only caring about appearances, and began making plans to leave as soon as she turned 18
Thankfully the opportunity presented itself to rid herself of her parents, and like Chandler's parents and David they were blown to smithereens
Veronica also forged a will for them, giving full ownership of the restaurant to her much to her sibling's dismay and anger
Duke, however, had no intention of taking over, she just wanted to make sure that her siblings didn't get it
She didn't want to close it either and originally intended to just sell it, but remembering how much her grandparents sacrificed for it she decided against this
While she thought over what to do she was reminded of the existence of her aunts and uncles when they came cozying up to her, obviously trying to get ownership of the restaurant from her
She eventually decided on giving the store to her Aunt Rose, an aunt on her mother's side, who Duke didn't know much about but was the only one to never contact her asking for something
When she met up with her to give her the good news she began sobbing much to Duke's confusion, before she explained that when her grandparents began to get older all of the kids started fighting over the restaurant, only for them to reveal that she would be inheriting it
She wasn't the smartest or best at anything, but she was the hardest worker, and her parents wanted to reward her for it
However, the other kids conspired to steal the store from her by convincing their elderly parents that she was lazy and all sorts of stories, and them being old and starting to show symptoms of dementia they believed it and removed her from the will
Rose was so thankful to Duke for returning it to her, telling her that her grandparents would be proud of her
Duke never knew her grandparents, all of them having died long before she was born, but nevertheless she was glad to know that she was honoring their wishes
She maintains a good relationship with her Aunt, often going to the restaurant to see her and check up on her
She does not, however, have a good relationship with the rest of her family
The remaining Aunts and Uncles all refuse to speak to her or her Aunt, enraged that Duke would give her the restaurant
And her siblings? They were fucking pissed at her
She actually filed a restraining order against Henry after he came to her house (she never game him the address, to this day she still doesn't know how he found it out), banging on the door, demanding that she come out and face him like a man, whatever that meant
It was funny watching the police taze his ass when he refused to leave
It was even funnier the second time
Duke got a video of that time and will watch it whenever she feels down
For all his book smarts Henry lacks any awareness of how the world actually works, for he actually expected that yelling like a child would get him somewhere
Hebe is not necessarily smarter but is more socially aware and knows that Duke hates her and won't give her anything, choosing to simply go no contact with her and trying to pretend that she doesn't exist
McNamara:
Mac's mother is a massive bitch but her father is a really nice guy
Sophia McNamara is probably the laziest motherfucker on her side of the Mississipi, refusing to work or get a job and instead using her looks to attract a rich man who would pay for the extravagant lifestyle she believes that she deserves to lead, ie she's a gold digger
She would jump from man to man, siphoning as much wealth as she could before dumping him and going to find another man, which was not hard considering her beauty
She believed that she found the jackpot when she found Frank McNamara, a young man down on his luck in the love department and coming from a long line of jewelry makers
She rushed their relationship, attempting to get married as fast as possible in order to access his vast wealth
Fortunately for Frank his parents had warned him that such a thing could occur, and with their advice he asked for a prenup before their marriage
Sophia tried to refuse but Frank refused to marry without it, so Sophia was forced to sign, denying her the life she believed that she rightfully deserved
Eventually they had a child, Sophia only doing so under the impression that doing so would convince Frank to revoke the prenup, but she had no such luck
Frank was absolutely ecstatic about his daughter, who he named Heather, a beautiful flower to match his beautiful daughter
He was a gentle man who loved his daughter more than anything in the world, staying up late into the night to make sure that she was ok, allowing his wife to sleep
He was even able to take some time away from the shop that he recently inherited just to spend time with her
But as Heather grew older, he began to notice that something wasn't right
She had strange tendencies, like sticking to a routine and become extremely upset when it was interrupted, showing extreme sensitivity to certain textures or foods, and hyperfixations on certain things, which at this age was My Little Pony
He took her to a doctor, and she was quickly diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder
Frank, being the amazing father that he was, never once complained or made any kind of negative comment about it, only asking the doctor how he could best care for her and what he could do to make her more comfortable
When Sophia heard the news she was horrified
She didn't even want a fucking child, much less a disabled one
Frank's plan for her to be a stay-at-home mom and take care of the child seemed like absolute torture, but she quickly realized that Heather was only a few months away from being old enough to drop off at daycare, so she just had to survive until then, sneak her to daycare during the day and Frank would be none the wiser
Eventually he would see what a good job she did, get rid of the stupid prenup, and then she could divorce him and take his money and buy a house in the Hollywood Hills like she's always dreamed of
In the meantime she took out her frustration on the poor child
She refused to give her the proper care she needed as an autistic child, not sticking to a schedule, forcing her to wear itchy clothes or eat things she wasn't comfortable with, and slapping and hitting her whenever she had a meltdown over it, threatening that things would get even worse if she tried to tell her father
It wasn't entirely out of malice, she was just too fucking lazy to go out of her way to properly care for her
Eventually her plan was set into motion and Mac was unceremoniously dropped off at daycare
When Mac got picked up she was actually sad that she had to leave her friend and was excited to go back so she could see her again
Sophia took this as evidence that she did the right thing and became ecstatic, sure that the removal of the prenup was right around the corner
Boy was she wrong
When Mac went to tell her dad about the amazing day she had and the awesome friend she made he appeared to be happy, only for him to absolutely lose it on his wife as soon as she went to her room to play
They had agreed to not put Mac in school until she was ready, and even then it would be a specialized school for kids like her, and here she goes putting her in a public daycare, what was she thinking?
Sophia tried justifying it, saying that she enjoyed it so it doesn't matter, but Frank retorted that it does as it shows how little respect she has for him and for their daughter
Upon hearing the word respect she became enraged, saying that he hasn't shown her any respect after he brought up that stupid prenup, if he respected her he would let her have the money so she could divorce him and get away from him and his stupid r-worded daughter
Realizing that her cover was blown, she could only stand in silence as Frank stared at her, fists clenched
He demanded that she get out and never come back, and when she refused and got up in his face, he punched her so hard that she flew across the room, teeth knocked out of her mouth
There was not another word exchanged as she packed her things and left, never to see either of them again
Despite not seeing her mother since she was 4, Sophia remains a constant fixture of Mac's nightmares
After JD blew up Chandler and Duke's parents he offered to find her mother and stage an "accident" but she refused, saying that the life she lived was punishment enough
Confused, Mac pulled up TikTok and went to her mother's page, where she did nothing but whine and complain that she doesn't have enough money for luxury goods and yelling at anyone who tells her to get a job, saying that social media would pay her enough
Mac explained that her mother was currently living in her run-down car in New Mexico, and spent every day having to beg to have enough money to eat, getting harassed by the cops and trolls online, and she didn't even have access to a shower
The life she lived was exactly the kind of life she deserved, and she wasn't going to deny her a day of her misery by letting her die early
JD was very concerned by the level of sociopathy that Mac apparently had and resolved to never get on her bad side
Her father, as seen above, truly and honestly cared about his daughter and loved her more than anything in the world
From the moment that he found out that she would need a little more help than most he vowed to do whatever he could to help her live as fulfilling of a life as possible
He enrolled her in therapy to help her find coping mechanisms, he looked into resources available for people like her, he engaged with her special interests, he went above and beyond
That's not to say he had it easy, he was a single parent with a business to run on top of caring for his autistic daughter, but he never wanted her to feel like her mother made her feel
One of the first lessons he had to learn was to trust Mac
He originally intended to pull her from daycare and into a program that was tailored for special-needs children, only for Mac to get extremely upset and have a meltdown, not wanting to leave her friend Chan-Chan
He tried to reassure her that she would make new friends but Mac refused to listen
He was unsure of what to do, but remembering that the doctor said that autistic children often struggled socially and had trouble making friends, he decided that it was best if he let her stay
Around that time Sophia attempted to sue him, claiming that Frank cheated on her and spent all day with his Mistress, leaving her at home with a poor autistic child and no resources to care for her because of the stupid prenup, only for her to try and get a reprieve by sending her to daycare, which caused him to get so mad that he divorced her and left her penniless
Thankfully he had been collecting evidence just in case something like this happened and the judge ruled in his favor, but nevertheless both his reputation among his family and his reputation with the residents of Sherwood diminished, but he couldn't worry about that, after all, he had a daughter to raise
He made sure to remind whenever she became frustrated that her autism was not something to be ashamed of or hated, but it was just something that made her different
Everyone had things that made them different, just like how all the My Little Ponies were all different, but that didn't make their differences bad, they just are, they're a part of life we have to recognize and accept
If she can find some matter of pride in it, then good on her, but she doesn't have to
Unfortunately, Mac had spend the first few years of her life learning from her mother that her autism was a curse, and those lessons were hard to forget, especially when she learned them at such a young age and at such a critical point in her development
He also met her friend, which until that point he didn't know that her name was also Heather
He found her to be a polite and courteous child, clearly desperate to win his approval, but most importantly she was a good friend to Mac, and thats all that really mattered to him
He quickly realized that she didn't have the best home life, and would often invite her over for playdates or for any other excuse
She was incredibly thankful for this, not only did she get to spend time with her best friend, but she also got to be away from her mother, who Frank found to be just an awful woman
If he had his way she would be on the receiving end of a punch just like his ex-wife
Frank became like the father that Chandler never had
Mac was a very sensitive person, when her body began rapidly changing in response to puberty she began having frequent panic attacks, especially when she had her first period, the pain that followed being almost unbearable to her
Her dad tried his best, but he was wholly unprepared to deal with teenage girl problems, however he still resolved to do everything in his power to help his daughter
He always reminded her that no problem was too difficult to overcome, and that she never had to face these problems alone
She always had him, Chandler, and her therapist to turn too and ask questions or for help if she needed it
However, it was hard for Mac to internalize these lessons
From a very young age her mother had told her that she was a burden and too needy and that she should just deal with things on her own, things told to her simply so her mom could continue to sit on the couch and watch TV and not parent, but they were things Mac internalized as she was so young and they came from a (supposedly) trusted source
As such, she was often reluctant to ask for help even if it was obvious she needed it
Her dad recognized this pattern, and would often attend meetings with her and her therapist to explain it to Dr. Fleming and help her develop strategies for when she encountered a stressful situation
It is here that her dad also came to realize the extent of bullying that his daughter was facing, a fact that she had attempted to keep from him, and he made attempts to contact the school to have something done
Unfortunately, his attempts were met with indifference, and his idea of pulling Mac out to a school more suited for her needs or even to the special education section of her school was rejected, as it would mean that Mac was separated from Chandler, something which she refused to allow to happen
He debated going against her wishes, but he understood that she had a very difficult time making friends, so taking her away from the only one she was ever able to make would cause more problems then taking her out of Westerberg Middle would solve
Faced with a difficult situation, her dad and therapist struggled to come up with an effective response
But as she entered high school, it all stopped
No longer did he hear her tears as he came come, calls from the school went from several a week to none, he was delighted that something had changed
He was even more delighted to hear that she made another friend (why were all of her friends named Heather???) and that she was stepping outside of her shell to join the cheer squad
When he got the news that she was becoming the captain he was overjoyed, and he went out of his way to attend all of her meets, never missing a single one
He was less enthused when he found out why the bullying had stopped and began to worry if and how popularity was changing her
He was also the only person outside of Duke to know about Mac and Chandler's relationship, and while he didn't have a problem with his daughter being gay he still reminded Chandler that if she broke her heart she would rue the day she ever met her
Likewise, he had no issue with her dating Duke or Veronica, giving both of them the "If you hurt my daughter I'll hurt you" speech
Once high school ended for Mac he took her to the jewelry store and began to show her the ropes, eventually letting her take over and relegating himself to an advisory position
Mac doesn't have a super good relationship with the rest of her family
None of her mother's family acknowledges her existence, and a lot of her father's side believed her mother during the trial and want nothing to do with her father and her by extension
Most of the remainder grew cold to her and her father once he revealed that she would be taking over the store, enraged that they would not be getting ownership like they assumed
They believed that Mac, as an autistic individual, would not be able to handle the running of a store, so they believed that Frank would cede the store to one of them to pass onto their sons and when this did not occur they refused to speak with either of them
Mac doesn't really care, she was never particularly close with any of them, and this event showed their true colors
Veronica:
Veronica was the only one out of the four to have both parents not be abusive assholes
Her father, Leonard Sawyer, worked at a office in a larger town about 45 minutes away from Sherwood, commuting there every day
Her mother, Janet Sawyer, was a stay-at-home mom
They were high-school sweethearts, marrying soon after leaving school and spent a few years starting their careers and building some savings before having their first and only child
The Sawyers were not well-off by many means, having only a single income, but they were not poor
They always had enough for bills and groceries and to put some into savings
Both of them were bullied heavily during high school, Leonard being a nerd and Janet being not conventionally attractive, making them easy targets for the various bullies of their day
This experience led to them forming a strong distaste for those with higher status
When their daughter also began to face bullying, they told her about their own experiences with bullies, but most importantly, how they ended up
Almost all of them ended up in prison, were dead, or were homeless, imparting the idea that popularity in high school meant that one was destined to be a gas station attendant at best and 6 feet under at worst, and these lessons stuck with Veronica, solidifying her opinion on popularity and popular people
You can imagine their horror when Veronica had to sheepishly admit that she joined the popular clique at school
They tried demanding that she quit at once, but Veronica retorted that this was her only way to prevent the bullying of her friends, with Leonard caving in after some more arguing
Janet remained steadfast in her opposition, only really giving in once high school ended and Veronica and the Heathers escaped unharmed
Despite this, the two of them still aren't really comfortable around the Heathers, but they do their best to remain civil
As for the rest of her family, Veronica isn't close with most of them, on account of them being your stereotypical conservative suburbanites, who would not be happy to hear about her polyamorous relationship with three women or her liberal activist work
The only one she's close with is her cousin Janis, who lives in Chicago
They weren't super close in their younger years despite being the same age, but as Janis came out as a lesbian and Veronica as bi they bonded over their love of women and became super close
They became someone that the other could turn to in times of trouble, like if Veronica had a bad day at school or if Regina was being extra bitchy today
Veronica found it weird that they both went to High Schools led by a trio of bitchy girls, but she digresses
When Veronica entered into a relationship with the Heathers she expected that Janis would be happy that she found love, but to her shock she was royally pissed off, asking her how she could date her and her friend's bullies
Veronica tried explaining that they changed but Janis would hear none of it and hung up on her, refusing to speak to her for a few months
They only made up when Janis came to Ohio for the funeral of one of their aunts, the close proximity making Janis rethink how she approached the situation
During this visit she was able to meet the Heathers and like Veronica's parents she doesn't exactly like them but will tolerate them, especially after sort-of making up with the Plastics since she last spoke to Veronica
She's not sure if Regina apologizing to her when she's high off her ass on pain meds counts, but Cady seems to think its at least somewhat genuine so whatever
Janis really wants the Heathers to come to Chicago to meet the Plastics just to see what would happen
Veronica says that they'll come when her and Cady get married, causing Janis to turn as red as Chandler's blazer
Veronica acted as her wingwoman while she poorly attempted to flirt with Cady, the poor girl being unaware of the true meaning behind her words
She thanks god everyday for Damian stepping in and forcing them to admit their feelings because good god it was getting hard to watch
