How to get back into writing: a 5-steps guide
As someone who hasn't written anything in a decade, this is what I did to get back into writing seriously.
Identify which archetype of writer fits me better. You may have heard George R.R. Martin saying there are two types of writers: gardeners and architects. Whether you believe in that statement or not isn't relevant per se, but the actual meaning behind that point is that you need to get to know yourself as a writer, how you work, what you need, etc., so you can adapt your environment to achieve your goals. Speaking of which…Gentle reminder : you're a person not a robot. You are allowed to work the way you want to, and not to follow whatever pieces of advice that are linked to these archetypes.
Set a realistic word count/session I can stick to over the long term. When you're a 9-6 office employee, it's not always easy to find time to write and sometime our day at work got the very best of us. Having that in mind, I set my word count up to 200-500 words per session or 1 chapter per week (they're rather small in my case). Gentle reminder : babysteps are better than no-step at all.
If I'm not writing, fine, I'll do some research or anything else. Your story will always require something from you. When I'm not in the mood for writing, there are two options : forcing myself or doing what I call para-writing. For instance it's : reading articles or books about improving my writing style, improving my worldbuilding, drawing a map of my city etc. This are not things that would appear in the novel but it would guide me throughout the process the way a walking-stick would do for an injured man. Gentle reminder : you always find something useful to do but at the end of the day, you still have to write.
Have a general idea of what I want to tell. I won't lie, I've plotted my entire novel from the very beginning to the very end, which means I know exactly what to write and when. If you're against having a defined plot, I'm no one to judge, but having at least the key events or the major points will definitely help you. Like a lighthouse, it will help you navigate through the mists of confusion or hesitation. Gentle reminder : It's better to know where to go even if you end up losing yourself along the journey. Having the map doesn't mean you have to follow it, but rather when you can allow yourself to take a step to the side.
Write something I enjoy. A bit cliché I admit, but it's the best advice I could give. You'll spend hours, days, weeks - even years !- on that story so better buckle up to something you really want to write. Otherwise the risk is to abandon that hard-work you've done halfway through the process. No one needs that frustration and that self-doubting questionnings. No one. Not you. Not even me. Gentle reminder : it's okay to want readers and reviews but I promise you, your writing will be really different on something you trully want to share...Remember how pissful it was to write an essay for class you didn't want to ?

SLEEP TOKEN - REVOLVER MAGAZINES COVERS (2023 - 2024)
SLEEP TOKEN x REVOLVER SPECIAL COLLECTOR'S EDITION DELUXE MAGAZINE ALTERNATE COVER

SUNDOWNING
SLEEP TOKEN FORMED IN 2016 IN THE UK. THEY SELF-RELEASED THEIR DEBUT EP, ONE, IN DECEMBER OF THAT YEAR, before signing to Basick Records for their 2017 three-track follow-up, Two. From the beginning, there was a mystique about them: The image of four anonymous musicians in cloaks and solemn-looking masks, their exposed chests and arms daubed in thick black paint, invited questions. At first, Sleep Token answered those questions, if cryptically, but soon they would begin declining all interviews. In the early days, it seems, Sleep Token acknowledged that their story required a little exposition.
A commonly held misconception among the fandom is that Sleep Token have only ever done one interview, with British music magazine Metal Hammer in 2021, around the time of the “Calcutta” single’s release. In fact, the band granted another interview in 2018, to Kerrang!, and in both of those rare press engagements, Vessel underscored the artistic purpose of their concealed identities.
“How we operate is as irrelevant as who we are — what matters is the music and the message,” Vessel declared to Metal Hammer. “We are here to serve Sleep and project His message.” When asked in the same conversation about the band’s genre-defying approach, he said: “Life is dark. Life is bright. Life is ugly. Life is beautiful. Don’t get lost in genres, they’ll disorientate you. Music is for everyone.”
In the Kerrang! interview, Vessel doubled down on Sleep Token’s philosophy of un hitching the art from its makers. “The true identities behind Sleep Token are immaterial and ultimately irrelevant,” Vessel said at the time. “Art has become entangled with identity… our aesthetic is there to fill the void left by that absence.”
True to those words, Sleep Token have remained anonymous and eschewed interviews ever since. Instead, they’ve communicated almost entirely through their music and its accompanying visuals. Each song is an apparent offering to the primordial deity known as Sleep, a once powerful being who, according to the band’s lore, promised Vessel ultimate glory if he were to devote himself fully to Him. He’s now known as Sleep because — as background information shared by Basick Records put it — “no modern tongue can properly express his name.” His past saw him wield far greater power than in the modern age, bestowing ancient civilizations with the gift of dreams and the curse of nightmares. As insightful fans have noted, Sleep bears a wealth of similarities to the Shadow archetype in Jungian philosophy, which is part of the unconscious mind and is composed of repressed ideas.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SUNDOWNING
A vida é brilhante. A vida é feia. A vida é bela. Não se perca em gêneros, eles vão te desorientar. Música é para todos.”
Na entrevista à Kerrang!, Vessel reforçou ainda mais a filosofia do Sleep Token de desvincular a arte de seus criadores. “As verdadeiras identidades por trás do Sleep Token são imateriais e, no fim das contas, irrelevantes,” disse Vessel na época. “A arte se tornou entrelaçada à identidade... nossa estética existe para preencher o vazio deixado por essa ausência.”
Fieis a essas palavras, o Sleep Token permaneceu anônimo e evitou entrevistas desde então.

THIS PLACE WILL BECOME YOUR TOMB
RELEASED IN SEPTEMBER 2021, AS THE WORLD WAS FINALLY REOPENING IN THE WAKE OF THE PANDEMIC, Sleep Token’s second album, This Place Will Become Your Tomb, marks a significant evolutionary leap from the masked band’s previous work, lyrically and narratively. It’s both darker and more nuanced. In terms of world-building, it’s more complex, with additional layers of meaning hidden in the artwork for the record and the merch, released in conjunction with it. Musically, it’s more cohesive and mature.
Lyrically, This Place Will Become Your Tomb traces a tumultuous emotional arc. The album opens with the crystalline “Atlantic,” a song that most fans seem to agree is about the aftermath of a suicide attempt. Vessel wakes up “surrounded” by unnamed people who “talk me through the damage, consequence/And how it’s a pain they know they don’t understand.” They sob “as they turn to statues at the bedside.”
“Flood me like Atlantic, bandage up the trenches,” Vessel croons, expressing what some have theorized is a wish for death by drowning, echoing the image on the album’s cover: a humanoid figure submerged, arms outstretched, in a bubbling water. Whatever the preferred method, Vessel’s reasons for his suicide attempt remain ambiguous. Is he trying to escape Sleep, to rid himself of the tremendous pain that toxic dynamic causes him? Or does death offer a path for them to be closer? Either way, he desires to leave this place at all costs, as expressed in his agonizing plea: “Anything to get me to sleep.” Later in the album, the song “High Water” calls back to the apparent act of self-harm when Vessel sings, “You are still a perfect reminder of what all these scars on my arms are for.”
Across the rest of This Place Will Become Your Tomb, Vessel’s emotions are even more vivid, twisted and contradictory than on Sundowning. On “Hypnosis,” Vessel is as lovestruck as ever (“You know you hypnotize me, always”) but his romantic feelings are undercut by a perverse craving for Sleep to “Sink your teeth/Split my skin/Just make me bleed.” It’s from a place of both

THIS PLACE WILL BECOME YOUR TOMB
Liricamente, This Place Will Become Your Tomb retrata um tumulto emocional.
Seja qual for, ele deseja sair deste lugar a todo custo, como expressa em seu lamento agonizante: “Anything to get me to sleep.” Mais tarde no álbum, a música “High Water” alude ao aparente ato de automutilação, quando Vessel canta: “You are still a perfect reminder of what all these scars on my arms are for.”
Em todo o This Place Will Become Your Tomb, as emoções de Vessel são ainda mais vívidas, contorcidas e contraditórias do que em Sundowning. Em “Hypnosis”, Vessel é tão apaixonado quanto assustador (“You know you hypnotize me, always”), mas seus sentimentos românticos são atravessados por um desejo perverso de que Sleep “Sink your teeth/ Split my skin / Just make me bleed.” É de um lugar de ambas...

TAKE ME BACK TO EDEN
IN THE COLD, SLOW-MOVING EARLY DAYS OF JANUARY 2023, SOMETHING INCREDIBLE HAPPENED.
With no warning, Sleep Token unleashed a new song upon the world that was — at the time — their most jaw-dropping offering to date. “Chokehold” begins ominously with a crackling, grinding buzz and Vessel sings declaratively: “When we made it was no accident / We both tangled up like branches in a flood.” The soft trill of a piano comes in, the suspense builds and then one of the most dramatic riffs the band have committed to record comes crashing in. It’s just the first twist in a dynamic single full of them.
“Chokehold” struck a chord with fans and lured Sleep Token co-signs from some unlikely voices. Lorna Shore frontman and deathcore YouTube star Will Ramos covered the song, and then dissected Vessel’s vocal technique with a panel of experts The Charismatic Voice YouTube channel. Even wilder was when American Idol star Chris Daughtry surprised a crowd at London’s Royal Albert Hall with a dusky acoustic performance of the single.
Yet the most remarkable thing about “Chokehold” is that, for all the fervor it stirred, the song Sleep Token released just 24 hours later had an even more profound impact on their career.
On January 6th, the day after “Chokehold’s” release, the band dropped a second 2023 single, called “The Summoning.” If “Chokehold” started a fire, this new song poured kerosene on it. A near-seven-minute masterpiece, “The Summoning” took Sleep Token’s genre-blending approach to new extremes, spanning the divide between death-metal-esque savagery and slinky funk. Not only did it work sonically, but it somehow made beautiful sense conceptually. The song quickly went viral on TikTok, partly because of the stunning contrast between the styles it plays with, and also due to its erotically charged lyrics. Sleep Token had hinted at lustful thoughts in the past, but “The Summoning”...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TAKE ME BACK TO EDEN

"Leviathan Sun." In the bible, Leviathan is a sea monster embodying chaos, and in Anton LaVey's The Satanic Bible, Leviathan represents the element of water. This Place Will Become Your Tomb came with even more mysterious numbers. The album's liner notes, as well as the artwork for the individual songs on YouTube, ascribe each track a measurement in meters, each larger — or deeper — than the one before. For example, the measurement for opening track “Atlantic” is 9.1m, which fans later discovered was the depth of the first-ever Atlantic deep dive. The depths increase and increase until closing track “Missing Limbs,” whose corresponding measurement is 10,924m, which happens to be the depth of the Mariana Trench, the deepest oceanic trench on Earth. It’s a lonely place that only five people — half the number of people who’ve walked on the moon — have visited.
Speaking of lonely places, the artwork for This Place’s three singles, “Alkaline,” “The Love You Want” and “Fall for Me” — which were released in a slower, more conventional rollout than Sundowning’s tracks — contain three additional coordinates between them. These turned out to be the coordinates of the most remote location on Earth, Point Nemo, the furthest spot from any inhabited land mass in any given direction, around 2,700 miles out into the sea.
A literal explanation for the inclusion of these Easter Eggs would be to pinpoint a possible location where the events of This Place’s narrative play out. But it’s more likely that these numbers and locations serve poetic purposes. In the wild, the Leviathan in question has lost its life, but its death enables the nourishment of thousands of other life forms. This parallels Vessel’s relationship with — and devotion to — Sleep. Vessel enables Sleep to thrive and continue existing, surrendering parts of himself to make this
"Will Vessel sacrifice himself to the manipulative deity, much like a whale falls to feed the creatures of the deep?"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Leviathan Sun." This Place Will Become Your Tomb veio com números ainda mais misteriosos.

19. “Dark Signs” Sundowning, 2019
Though Sleep Token are always keen to toy with mainstream sounds, “Dark Signs” leans further into those sounds than most of Sundowning’s other songs. The click and whirr of trap drums loom large, as do the glistening electronics, until the track segues into grittier, rockier echelons — a pivot that would become the band’s trademark structural maneuver going forward. Meanwhile, although Vessel’s lyrical approach is usually more poetic in nature, “Dark Signs” cuts as deep as it does because he leaves no room for ambiguity: “I miss the man I was,” he curses. “I hate who I have become.”
18. “Jaws” non album single, 2018
Like “Nazareth,” “Jaws” is one of Sleep Token’s earliest songs, but it still holds up years later — and even appears in their setlist from time to time. Released before any of their albums, the stand-alone single sows the seeds of what was to come, with a palette of chunky percussion, squalling synths and snarling riffs. Also foreshadowing the band’s future are Vessel’s lyrics, in which he explores the same blurring of love and malice that would become a recurring theme in Sleep Token’s unfolding story.
17. “The Night Does Not Belong to God” Sundowning
“The Night Does Not Belong to God” is drenched in a feeling of reverence. It’s both subtle and somehow vast, especially in its thinner-sounding passages. Even the electric guitar only takes up a modest amount of space, appearing as a mere undercurrent of the surrounding composition. Apt for a band whose modus operandi is worship, it has the ethereal quality of music that might be sung in church. Some parts, especially in the second verse...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
19. “Dark Signs” – Sundowning (2019)
“Odeio quem me tornei.”
17. “The Night Does Not Belong to God” – Sundowning
“The Night Does Not Belong to God” está imersa em uma sensação de reverência.

Quarant-ween movie #19: American Scary

I’ve found my dream job at last.
While many people of my generation only know horror hosts from their depictions in media after the fact (Vampira in Ed Wood, Elvira’s movie, perhaps the incessantly cackling Crypt Keeper) they were a big deal back in the day, and still exist on local public access stations and horror conventions. To kill time on the air (and sometimes to compensate for the low quality of a movie), they would introduce the horror movies their channel could afford rights to show, and perhaps do a skit or two in between commercial breaks. They also existed in radio and comic book form, but cheap tv seems to have been where they really flourished. They themselves were the draw, moreso than the films they showed- they joked, they chewed the scenery, they wore outrageous costumes. Little kids loved them, stoner college kids loved them, whole families would come running into the tv room when they heard the voice coming from the screen.
American Scary is a documentary about the horror host phenomenon, featuring many of the hosts themselves reminiscing (including Neil Gaiman, who apparently hosted a Fox horror movie special.) We see lots of talking heads in outlandish makeup recalling who their personal role models were and speculating on the future of the archetype. Naturally, my favorite interviewee was Joel Hodgeson, creator of Mystery Science Theater 3000, a twist on the horror host format which featured a whole cast of science fiction-themed hosts who interacted with the movie while it was playing, not just during breaks.
From the brief clips we see, the actual humor of these horror hosts varies wildly (it’s sometimes pretty played-out shtick, but Svengoolie actually seems pretty funny!) It wasn’t just about making jokes, though- hosts and fans recall that the character’s interruptions both served the purpose of providing the viewer with a friend to watch the movies with, and of breaking up the tension and reminding any children watching that it’s all just a show. Plenty of horror movie reviewers exist on youtube today, even ones with characters, but this was entirely its own type of para-social relationship. Will we ever see a real resurgence? In today’s constantly-shifting media landscape, I couldn’t possibly guess.
American Scary isn’t a terribly in-depth documentary or academic cultural review, but it’s a charming overview of a once-common type of performance. Several of the hosts talked about how their job was to celebrate Halloween every week, and who can argue with that philosophy? We want our heroes, our villains, and we also want the occasional living cartoon ghoul. Invite them into your home once again, if only for the length of a single movie.

Shy girl - statement
Previous statement
For this class and second half of summer quarter I want to engage in a performance and dialog with female archetypes on the internet. I have always found the platform of internet a rather hostile black hole, yelling into the void so to speak. It also has been a place where I have discovered a lot of things that have helped me feel less isolated and have brought much inspiration to my life, a great outlet for my maximalist aesthetics. So, I have seen as someone growing up with the internet being around for the birth of Facebook and beginning my internet career on Myspace, that the internet is a place of duality. I haven’t much in my work engaged in a particularly feminist dialogue in my work as to not be pushed into a realm of all my work being an expression of the female but I guess I have still done so but not as overtly. I have also never explicitly created a character for myself during a performance as frankly I found it a bit to campy. I have created a persona based of a mash of a type of alternative female archetype that has found its place on the internet specifically, the E-girl. A popular and at the same time very much mi lined persona mainly a great target of specifically a lot of sexist vitriol from other online born groups.it is also a female persona that is much outside of my expression so I am interested in placing myself in the uncomfortable position in such a blatant misrepresentation of myself as well as having that character engage with some of the worst aspects of online culture and addressing that place and stereotype of woman in it. I am also interested in differences in male and female performance and tropes of expression and discourse found online mainly YouTube and other video formats. My character’s name will be named, shy girl and to further disguise is from myself I will be altering my own voice for speaking parts mush of the performances will be bringing more Avant-Garde concepts of performance to the mainstream such as john cages water performance with audience participation. Also, I want to produce short work more consistently which is a mode of work I have not done up to this point so I will be putting out longer video content once a week.
Add on:
To update my artist statement and to speak to my progress with subjects related to the creation of my alter though I’m not sure how much I want it to be viewed as persona but more of a way to remove myself. This alter , Shy girl, has so far no set type of format or type of content other than videos at this point and photos and maybe live capture online as I progress with platforms but that will very much change the nature of the performances as they will move from being captured into film , to being performance again the temporality will change as well as the source of control. which will affect the performances greatly but that will be addressed when the time comes, I think live streaming is a huge new question and place for performance art. Back from that side tracking so far in terms of subject my videos have in initial conceptions been touching on but not limited to, Para social relationships, hostile male communities such as Inscels, the gaze, make up beauty/ identity, Vtubers and anime subculture, the body, multiples and an exercise in thought on distance and new space relationships found in the online environment. There is much more intertwined with in all of the videos I have done up to this point but these are some of the starting points for my video concept drawings and shot lists which I will be posing. The biggest development of this alter has been my creation of not only a 3D model based on my outfit and make up created for my performance in my own body. But now also a 2D model, so at this point I have created this group of performers which has been an interesting way of layering levels of abstraction of the original persona created. My video “shy graces” was the first time we were all together as I have been working with green screen to place myself into my online gallery/performance space, though it has been a passing thought but definite one that being my irrelevance now that I have these digital avatars. Which leads to something I suspected might happen that being my own disenchantment with my body which in a way lead to the next video “skin study’s” based on the work of ana Mendieta “glass on face” and my own push to recess the nude and the body online. This video for the first time bought in anime references as well which I did so for the obvious reason that these alters made online where very influenced my anime culture and manga illustration. As a western fan and a reclusive member of the subculture I have always seen interesting territory for discussion about the role of women in the anime but also in the community, being as if suffers from much of many “nerd subcultures” suffer from, sexualization, fetish, nerd bro culture and so on. But in particular anime’s relationship to the female body and projection of female presenting people is rife with conceptual fodder that I couldn’t begin to pick at this is quite long but has been developing. But one of the biggest draws is anime has been the first to bring this type of idealized body and form they have created into a living space in the form of projected 3D models like that of the Vocaloid characters which were developed as mascots for products along with new figures like project melody on streaming cites as well her move into adult content as a Only fans personality, Adult subscription cite. There has even been the creation of objects of comfort mimicking a body in the form or body pillows, which I used in one of my “music cover” videos integrating my own limbs with this printed body. And the creation of silicon full dolls not always used for the purpose of being a sex toy but as recreation of characters from particular shows that people use for companionship not that there is not a sexual element at play. A lot of this rings true to what I think is happening online these things are rather inseparable as I have moved into looking into the Vtuber community for my models and “copies” which the collective element being that all the programs that I have seen or used all by default use this anime form and all Vtubers use this anime avatar weather that be the 3D models or the 2D models as I created mine from scratch based on my performance persona and examples of popular Vtuber forms. There is this whole new level to literally not only changing your persona online as most do but actually taking on a new form and based on anime which is about the creation of whole other reality’s and which has an element of as a lot of media, escapism. These works as of this past class have been as I have been speaking about very bodily and quite grotesque as is the history often is of female performance art which I had read of and reminded me of such in Vergine body as language which I will link. This writing hit many points in relation to my work and I think is a far better resistor of a lot of what is a part of my content currently. One of originators for these past few videos not only the most recent two skin studies and shy graces was when I published my 3D model on Vorid studios there was a pop up that askes you about the licensing the avatar and it asks who can use it but what most stuck out to me was it asked if the creator would allow sexual content or violent content which became a big influence on the tone of that video. As well the video “shy Graces” which addressed the fact to be able to inhabit my new bodies I needed to pay more money to be able to do something as simple as move the arms of my 3D model as you would need an add on called leap motion.my thoughts and conceptual development may seem rather scattered at the moments but much thought has go into them and as far as the writing about this work it will develop as the work has over time.
As for more technical aspects and materials, I have been pushing myself as far as the structure of my production of these videos as I want to make them all in accessible places with tools that anyone can access and I am trying to produce content weekly as on YouTube the speed of videos outputted is key to that structure and algorithm. The sets, outfits I have been using are also something that its easily accessed or recreated by anyone I guess I am focused on using almost modern-day working-class materials. As I should have started with saying at the beginning of this re brief this project at this point has not end game as it were I have the content that I am expressing as I want to use this avatar to engage with an audience that is outside of say a space in an art institution as I was inspired much by the work of fellow art student and internet artist molly soda. These alters and accounts have become my new studio work place for me to work on a continuous performance practice which is something I have not yet undertaken and I feel that will push my practice outside of my own comfort zone and open me to a space of pushing myself and very making mistakes and gaining new understanding to developed my practice.
Definition: Internet art (also known as net art) is a form of digital artwork distributed via the Internet. This form of art has circumvented the traditional dominance of the gallery and museum system, delivering aesthetic experiences via the Internet. In many cases, the viewer is drawn into some kind of interaction with the work of art. Artists working in this manner are sometimes referred to as net artists.
Net artist may use specific social or cultural internet traditions to produce their art outside of the technical structure of the internet. Internet art is often—but not always—interactive, participatory, and multimedia-based. Internet art can be used to spread a message, either political or social, using human interactions.
The term Internet art typically does not refer to art that has been simply digitized and uploaded to be viewable over the Internet, such as in an online gallery.[1] Rather, this genre relies intrinsically on the Internet to exist as a whole, taking advantage of such aspects as an interactive interface and connectivity to multiple social and economic cultures and micro-cultures, not only web-based works.

Jung and Dean’s Journey towards Self-Integration in 14x11 Damaged Goods
I’ve posted here already about all the heavy Dean-and-the-closet metaphors in Damaged Goods:
http://drsilverfish.tumblr.com/post/182296360214/a-fridge-locker-an-enochian-puzzle-box-a-malak
So, in this post, I want to talk about the continuing use the writers’ room is making this season of Jungian themes (in a micro-cosmic reflection of the larger cosmic scale on which those same themes played out in S11, in the God/ The Darkness storyline).
This extends my now developing series of Jungian-themed S14 meta:
http://drsilverfish.tumblr.com/post/180906003584/the-shadow-14x08
http://drsilverfish.tumblr.com/post/181122764984/14x09-the-spear-jungian-decoder-ring-edition
http://drsilverfish.tumblr.com/post/182257314199/what-the-light-and-shadow-tells-us
The two books which Dean takes from the bunker, to help him in his construction of the Ma’lak (angel) box (i.e. a huge Dean’s repression/ closet metaphor) are:

and..

The second, Maria Prophetissima Historia Achengeli, is really interesting, because Maria Prophetissima is known as one of the first alchemists....
See her Wiki entry here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_the_Jewess
None of her own writings survive, as far as we know, so it’s a pretty cool idea (just look at the SPN creative team’s attention to set dressing narrative detail!) that the Men of Letters would have a “lost” book of hers.
However, some quotes attributed to her do survive in others’ writings, notably:
“Join the male and the female, and you will find what is sought.”
AND
“Out of the One comes Two, out of Two comes Three, and from the Third comes the One as the Fourth.”
This brings us back directly to the psychoanalyst Carl Jung, whose ideas on the psychological confrontation with the internal Shadow, and (for men) additionally with the internal Anima (the “feminine archetype” in the subconscious) as part of the psyche’s journey towards self-development and integration are, as I’ve laid out in the previous meta above, driving this season thematically:
Here is an interpretation of Maria Prophetissima’s saying, about the “one, two, three” etc., from a book called Jung and the Tarot: An Archetypal Journey by Sallie Nichols (p108):

Using this Jungian framework, in relation to Dean, in S14 in general, and here in Damaged Goods specifically:
1) = Conscious (and currently repressing hard) Dean
2) = Shadow Dean (Dean’s repression, embodied by AU!Michael, who in turn is a John Winchester mirror, which includes his repression of all his trauma, as we glimpsed during the journey into his mind in 14x10 Nihilism, and his repression of his emotionally expressive softer side, the side that wants to hug Sam more when the world isn’t ending, and, finally, his repression of his queerness)
3) = Inner Mediator - this is Dean’s Anima, his internal feminine counter-part (which we could say Pamela Barnes represented in 14x10 Nihilism) - Jung considered the Anima to be a messenger between the conscious and the subconscious
I really loved @shirtlesssammy ‘s meta on Pamela as a guardian in 14x10, to which I added something on Pamela as a psychopomp, both of which link to her role as Dean’s Anima/ feminine counter-part/ mediator between his conscious and sub-conscious in Nihilism (see here);
http://drsilverfish.tumblr.com/post/182196788399/pamela-the-guardian-in-14x10
4) = Integrated Dean (i.e. eventual “endgame Dean”)
Dean’s confronation with AU!Michael, can be seen as a metaphor for his confrontation with his Shadow:

Dean’s confrontation with Dark!Kaia, can be seen as metaphor (one among several manifestations) for his psyche’s conversation with his Shadow/ Anima:

Alchemy, was the magic/ philosophy/ early quasi-science of the attempted transformation of substances, with a history stretching from ancient Egypt (BC) through the medieval Arabic and then European worlds, into the Renaissance.
On the material plane, it perhaps most famously involved attempts to transmute lead into gold. But, on the philosophical and spiritual planes, that transmutation was a metaphor for the purification and ascendance of the soul.
Jung was interested in alchemy because he saw the integrative work, which he believed was the goal of psychoanalysis, as a kind of “alchemy of the soul”.
Now, as well as Maria Prophetissima and the adoption of her ideas of alchemical transmutation by Jung, we have the demon Abraxas, another esoteric figure picked up by Jung in his writings, likewise appearing in Damaged Goods, contained by Mary Winchester in this Enochian puzzle box:

This box is another HUGE metaphor for Dean’s repression, which is why it’s really significant that Abraxas was locked away by Dean’s mother, Mary (apparently many years ago, before her death). Because Mary’s death was the origin point for Dean’s childhood trauma, and the beginning of hard-core repression on Dean’s part, as a coping mechanism.
Nick (ugh) drills into the box to release the demon, and we can read this is a metaphor for the (eventual) release of AU!Michael/ Dean’s Shadow-Self from its prison of repression (given all the other metaphors about locked rooms and boxes and closets in the ep). Here is the demon-smoke (i.e. the shadow) of Abraxas released:

Jung, in very mystical terms, conceptualised Abraxas, in his book Seven Sermons to the Dead (1916) as the driving force of self-integration:
“That which is spoken by God-the-Sun is life; that which is spoken by the Devil is death; Abraxas speaketh that hallowed and accursed word, which is life and death at the same time. Abraxas begetteth truth and lying, good and evil, light and darkness in the same word and in the same act...”
“It [Abraxas] is the monster of the under-world, a thousand-armed polyp, coiled knot of winged serpents, frenzy.
It is the hermaphrodite of the earliest beginning....
It is abundance that seeketh union with emptiness.
It is holy begetting.
It is love and love’s murder.
It is the saint and his betrayer.
It is the brightest light of day and the darkest night of madness.”
Carl Jung Seven Sermons to the Dead (1916) (Sermon 3)
Yes, did I mention Jung was heavily inclined to mysticism.
Here is a link to the Seven Sermons themselves, for the truly geeky amongst you
http://gnosis.org/library/7Sermons.htm
Abraxas has been linked to another mystical symbol Jung was interested in, the Ouroboros (the symbol of a serpent devouring its own tail) and we know we have an episode of that very title coming up soon (14x14 Ouroboros). The ouroboros originated in ancient Egypt and its meaning has shifted over time, space and culture (the Victorians often adorned grave-stones with the ouroboros as a symbol of resurrection):

However, for Jung, the ouroboros is a symbol for the integration of the conscious self with the Shadow:
“The alchemists, who in their own way knew more about the nature of the individuation process than we moderns do, expressed this paradox through the symbol of the Ouroboros, the snake that eats its own tail. The Ouroboros has been said to have a meaning of infinity or wholeness. In the age-old image of the Ouroboros lies the thought of devouring oneself and turning oneself into a circulatory process, for it was clear to the more astute alchemists that the prima materia of the art was man himself. The Ouroboros is a dramatic symbol for the integration and assimilation of the opposite, i.e. of the shadow. This ‘feed-back’ process is at the same time a symbol of immortality, since it is said of the Ouroboros that he slays himself and brings himself to life, fertilizes himself and gives birth to himself. He symbolizes the One, who proceeds from the clash of opposites, and he therefore constitutes the secret of the prima materia which […] unquestionably stems from man’s unconscious.”
Carl Jung, Collected Works, Vol. 14 para. 513)
http://jungcurrents.com/a-jungian-shaggy-snake-story
This all links beautifully to the theme of S14 presaged in the S14 poster, of light and shadow - i.e. of the confrontation with the Shadow-Self on the path towards, eventual (end-game) self-integration.
Dean described himself as AU!Michael’s (i.e. his own) prison in 14x10 Nihilism - “I am the cage!”, and in 14x11 Damaged Goods, Sam asks him, “That’s your plan? You wanna be buried alive?” To which Dean replies desperately, “That door is giving! I can feel it giving!”
So, we can understand, in narrative metaphor, that Dean has reached a crisis point, wherein his own strategies of self-repression are no longer working - the door is giving, the mirror is cracking:

For now, Dean wants to go full pedal-to-the-metal with the repression, piling it on six layers deep. He want’s to lock AU!Michael and himself in a mystical Ma’lak box and drop it to the bottom of the ocean for eternity.
But, the harder you repress your Shadow, the more it comes for you...
The key, according to Jung, is to turn and embrace it, and in so-doing, to discover your beautiful, hidden potential...

Feliz semana!
To make smarter dreams come true ...
Heading to the new moon in Scorpio
Change is a word an idea, a natural reality in my humble opinion that in my personal life cost me time, patience, sensitivity and pain in some way to come to understand. However, by accepting it and integrating it into my daily life spiritually, it has emotionally helped me to feel peace, gratitude and faith in me, more often speaking to me with a more gentle voice, inwardly and consequently speaking to those around me in the same way ( I have not always been that way ahaha I have a strong, aggressive character even then for me it has been an important achievement).
Here in Colombia we have a traditional saying "Kill two birds with one shoot" and that is an example to explain that by integrating the acceptance of change in my life I have understood the meaning of another concept that in my opinion we do not value enough as you see. by conditioning or toxic social influence, perhaps simply because of fear of feeling, more than thinking ... It is passion, a desire beyond the ego, an almost childish impulse, very authentic that blurs us limitations and very pessimistic realities, I think being immersed in a passion (and I do not mean a sentimental or romantic sense only) that can be artistic, spiritual, symbolic, professional, intellectual or if in some wonderful romantic cases, time disappears ... We manage to live eternity in hours , the pain is assumed with patience because it is worth the sacrifice, that more than with suffering as in the #Yoga ballet, fitness, dance or many other practices that involve work body garlic, becomes an exercise in patience to learn to understand the nature of what hurts and excites us, what builds or destroys us ... Passion is lived without obligation, but for something more similar to loyalty it seems ... a kind of internal force that empowers us against ideas, goals and dreams that exist only on planes and invisible realities.
Change + Passion in # Astrology is the Axis / Yin and Yang of #Aquarius + #Leo bone The Sun / Apollo for the Greeks and Uranus / Uranus mythology helps us understand personal phenomena in more cosmogonic terms (as above is below) using archetypes (primordial mages of sensations and perceptions that have been repeated consecutively in the history of mankind, in other words those roles / characters present in all mythologies / folklore and human religions, good god, bad, hero, villain kings and queens angels or demons etc.)
This week the energy climate is presented as an emotional test that helps us observe in our personal worlds, which we know so much about the shadow side of our passions, desires and relationships, it is a week of transformations that begin, end or receive a strong impulse, on matters such as:
Material Dimension -- money, personal or shared, possessions, investments Emotional Dimension -- psychological processes, situations that make us shock therapy against denied, ignored or repressed issues, sexual passions Spiritual Dimension -- Karmic encounters, pending, people or characters reappear that remind us of unrecognized / repressed / denied emotional lessons or about issues of power, fear and the beautiful transformation of all these dense issues
Important! : This is not negative on the contrary when we see the shadow side of our own dimension, we understand, how see the light, our nature is plural that is why accepting what stresses us as the opportunity to create a new perspective, is learning to transform fear into love in my humble opinion
When I studied Astrology Mauricio Puerta, my teacher signed one of his books now mine, with a dedication that says: For Juliana, make her most intelligent dreams come true ... Today with this first article of opinion, reflection and Astral gossip on Mercury Day, my intention is the same, to give them an energetic Tip, interpretive of the situation, invite them to use it, as a tool to reflect how to integrate these symbols Aquarius - Change and Leo - Passion can feed make your illusions and goals more intelligent, reality.
Happy week!

Congratulations, EMILY! You’ve been accepted for the role of MIRANDA. Admin Em: Emily, it was your parallel of Maeve and Joan of Arc and their martyrdom that convinced me that you really do understand Maeve, inside and out! From her love and light to her unwavering belief in a peace between the two warring territories, and this line-- “Her flaws are something she is blind to, both in her very nature and perhaps by choice in some small way, even if that choice is a bit unintentional,” we’re all so deeply enamored with your Maeve and her beautiful voice and can’t wait to see her on the dash! Please read over the checklist and send in your blog within 24 hours.
WELCOME TO THE MOB.
Out of Character Alias | Emily Age | 24 Preferred Pronouns | She/her/hers Activity Level | So I am very busy - with work, applying to graduate school, and other such things. However, when I really adore a character I find it hard to stay away, so I’ll be on at least three nights a week, plus at least one weekend day/night. I also promise to ask for hiatuses as they are needed. Timezone | EST
Current/Past RP Accounts | both past - http://marvelousevelyn.tumblr.comand https://camelliafairchild.tumblr.com/
In Character Character | Miranda // Maeve Petre What drew you to this character? | I’m very drawn to morally grey characters, and I am also very drawn to characters who are very good, without question. Maeve obviously falls more into the latter, and there is something so incredibly beautiful about who she is, what she believes in, and her utter devotion to fight for it.
It is funny to me, because of Shakespeare’s non-history plays, The Tempest is one I am not as familiar with as others, but I have had a fondness for Miranda’s character for a long while, so I will be fascinated to play her out and see how she changes and how she holds true to herself amidst the horrors in the city.
When she hardens, it is not in the way that some expect - she hardens in her desires, not in her sense of being.
I think that even though she is very good, and very innocent, she has the possibility to still have great development, and I would love to be able to help develop her. She is so innocent and is to the point of being naive, and I wish to explore that - she is kind and gentle, but also flawed, and flawed in ways that she would not/does not/cannot quite see, at least now.
Her flaws are something she is blind to, both in her very nature and perhaps by choice in some small way, even if that choice is a bit unintentional.
“Miranda” means “worthy of admiration; wonderful", and Maeve means “the cause of great joy” (at least these are two meanings I found). There is certainly similarities to be found between these names, but I find the subtle differences - how Miranda in some ways feels more as though it has to be earned, and Maeve is something she can just be is a bit of an interesting concept. Something I might like to explore, as I find the power of names incredibly interesting. Maeve was/is her parents’ greatest joy, and now that she is part of the Capulets she has a name that gives her things to live up to - both for herself and in the eyes for others. She is content with what she is doing, but she still sees herself being looked down upon. How will those two things come together? Will they come together? Only time will be able to tell.
I have to say, as someone who likes history, I have also seen her in some ways as a Joan of Arc archetype - although less likely to up and literally ride into battle, she has some similarities, and I certainly can see her as a bit of a saint/martyr type in a number of ways.
What is a future plot idea you have in mind for the character? |
I. I would like for her to find out about how her mother died - I hope it is okay (and that I did not somehow miss something?) to assume it was the Montagues, because I could see that as being the reasoning behind how her father was involved with the Capulets, but I would like to expand on this, and should she ever find out about the circumstances of her mother’s death, how that might affect her view on things. I wonder if it will make her more keen on joining the Capulets more fully - because she is part of them, but she is part because of her father, and has not thrown herself into it because that can limit her ability to do peace - but should the Montagues be the cause of her mother’s death, I could see someone maybe using that to push her into being more of a solider of the Capulets.
However, it could also push her desire for neutrality more - if a feud killed her mother, wouldn’t neutrality be a more desirable option? It would make it so that she would not have to worry about people killing simply because of the other’s associations.
II. I do really wish to do things with her father - I realize he may not be brought into the RP, so even if through a self-para, or through interactions with others who are more well acquainted with the side of him Maeve was unaware of, would be fascinating. She joined with the Capulets to understand him, and yet she still sees hope, she still sees a wish to make everything better - she still hasn’t quite grasped the way that turned Philip into the hardened man whose hands have been covered far more than once with another’s blood. If he’s not brought into the RP, and even more if he is, I would really like to explore how they work together - because they’ve been a father and daughter pair for as long as Maeve can remember, but the context in which they live now is so entirely different…
III. How will her friendship with Santino affect things? Although of course some Montagues and Capulets speak, it is not nearly as common for true friendships to form. How did it blossom? This both has to do with past and future, which I sincerely hope is okay to talk about, but I think that it is crucial in her development, even if when she first met Santino she was not aware of his allegiances. Given how unaware she was of everything, I see this as quite feasible. When she first met him, she thought he was another kindred soul, and she was not deterred when she found out about him being one of the Montagues - because, perhaps, if she can find kind souls amongst both sides, that will make her goals of peace all the easier.
IV. I am absolutely and entirely here for any interactions with those within the Capulets who oppose her wishes, and also for her finding those she has more in common with than she initially might have expected. I realize this is very vague, but I am also interested to see what her reactions would be if she had more in common with someone more violent than she is, and how that’d play out?
V. She is… very kind, very much seeing the good in most anyone. Quite clearly, this is something that will allow her to fairly easily run into issue. There’s already the chance of it being an issue with regard to her and Santino and how both sides might see that friendship, but there is more to explore. There is the issue of people taking advantage of her desire to see good, to do the opposite of what Rafaella has done and to not push her away and try to make her see the horrors and to fight - but instead, to take her and use her refusal to see anything but beauty in the world and mold that to their liking.
VI. She’s a solider, and soldiers get assignments. Perhaps she somehow gets a violent assignment - probably not from Everett, just because he and she are similar souls (as she would say, too) - but someone else. She is fiercely loyal, and though it would conflict with her desire for bettering the world, she would not want to disappoint someone, especially if she admired them. So how will that affect things? Are you comfortable with killing off your character? | Yes, I do. Not right away of course, but should a situation call for it, I am. Angst fuels the RP world, does it not? :) In Depth In-Character Interview:
Papa might not want her to be meeting someone for an interview, but if it allows her voice to be heard, Maeve is more than happy to agree, to go and spread her message. She holds onto her mug of tea, the smell and warmth of cinnamon making its way into her nose.
The first question is to be expected, though she finds herself grateful for it nonetheless. "What is your favorite place in Verona?”
There is a pause, as Maeve considers her options, weighing them - of course she could say her childhood bedroom, one she found comfort in, with posters and carefully cared-for plants, and books neatly arranged on her shelves. But after a moment, she gives a nod - “The Castelvecchio Bridge. I enjoy watching the water from it, and although I am well aware such a memory should not exist, I have vague memories of being held against my mother’s chest as she walked along it, just before sunset, trying to calm me before I slept.” She brushes a curl of her hair out from her face and grins. “How could anybody not adore the bridge?” There is the hint of a would-be wink, her eyes practically squinting shut as she grins. “It is quite hard to resist, and furthermore quite difficult to miss, should anyone come to visit our dear Verona.” She takes a sip of her tea, and nods - the hint that she is ready, without speaking such.
"What does your typical day look like?”
A nod, a laugh. “I wake up - quite often with the sun, and I like to pull my window shades open and keep all the lights off in my room, and then I make myself a cup of tea sweetened with honey,” she gives a nod and gestures towards the teacup that sits in between the two of them, "and I sit at my dining room table and read, before I go off to explore.” She brushes a finger against her nose. “I am in search of a job at present, but that should all come soon, and once I find one, I will surely go there with a bag slung over my shoulder with a book inside, filled with dried flowers.” She knits her brows together. “I also cook dinners for Papa, because someone must help to keep him alive, regardless of everything that has happened.” She bites her lip. “It is what I have done for as long as I can remember, I see no reason as to why I ought to stop.” She waves the interviewer on, “Please, continue.” Please do not ask me why there would be even the barest of considerations that I should change how I have behaved around Papa. I never shall. Never. I do not think.
The interviewer clears his throat, although there is something in his eyes that hints that he might wish to return to her answers in greater depth. "What has been your biggest mistake thus far?” The grin is not wicked now, not exactly, and Maeve remains unaware, instead offering a quick and light shrug. “I am not certain.” Too much trust? Though that thought leaves practically before it can be fully established. Because her trust is beautiful, it is part of what makes her who she is. “For I believe everything allows one to grow, and though I have made stumbles, calling my life’s path a mistake at any turn seems perhaps far too harsh. I am only sorry I do not have a greater answer, perhaps I can come and find you once I have more time to think on this.”
“What has been the most difficult task asked of you?”
She takes in a breath of air, not wanting to make eye contact. Because difficult is not so often a word that graces her tongue. It may be naive, and there are certainly those who would call it so, but it is her truth. “It is not - was not - exactly a task,” she drums her fingertips against her thigh, but accepting - becoming aware - of exactly what it is that Papa does -“ She presses her fingertips into her thigh for a moment, letting her breath catch. “Nothing can quite compare to that, although it has certainly given me a greater resolve to do better by this whole city.”
Perhaps it sufficed well enough for now, because the interviewer took down a few scribbles onto his notepad, before glancing back up. “What are your thoughts on the war between the Capulets and the Montagues?”
This one is easy. The answer flows from her pink-tinted lips. “I think that I will be the one to cause its end.” Her wide eyes look up. “Because peace is natural, and if flowers can grown amidst concrete, then peace can overcome war.” There is the glimmer of a smile that crosses her lips, turned up at the edges, though if one is to observe closely, they will notice that it is her eyes which truly glimmer at the idea. “Perhaps that is too self-centered an idea, but it is my belief. My thoughts are that it is not needed, and that it will burn to the ground, and we will rebuild and have peace, finally.” She gives a firm nod, and the curls of her hair bounce softly.

HEADCANONS:
I. She is allergic to dairy and to peanuts. She found out when she was only about two years old, and was rushed to the hospital. She manages it just fine now, but it is one thing that she does remain cautious about.
II. She loves flowers, and has many plants all over her home and takes incredible care to tend to each of them each day. Her favorite flowers are daffodils (which mean things such as new beginnings - with daffodils, she has a small pot growing), daisies, and violets. She is 100% the sort to have made flower chains/pressed flowers/etc for those she cares about.
III. The first knife she trained with was one from her own kitchen - the same one that she cut up vegetables for soups - because it was a reminder of home, another reminder (not that she should need one) of why she had taken up this cause. To help better her family, to help fix the wrongs of the city.
IV. She wears subtle perfumes every day. Maeve is not one to focus on much make-up, besides some lipbalm or gloss, but she does enjoy perfumes, and has a few bottles (tbd which) that she will rotate.
V. She speaks English, Spanish, and Italian. Although born and raised in Verona, speaking Spanish is something important to her, and she will slip into it with certain terms/phrases because it is a comfort to her.

The darker side of MADD
On a more serious, real-world-effects note, It's important to me I clear up the terminology.
MADD--MalAdaptive DayDreaming--is just what its name suggests. It is a maladaptive coping mechanism, meaning that, while it can be enjoyable or comforting, it has negative effects on my mental state and how I interact with the world outside my head.
Reality and I have a rather...tenous relationship. Time passes strangely for me--when you can be stuck in a day-long story for two or three days at a time, things get muddy really fast.
It took me breaking my ankle in three places to realize I even could get hurt worse than a cut or a bruise. How could this happen to me, when the "me" inside my head is invincible?
I don't get people. When you spend half your waking hours in a world you create and control, you expect people to react a certain way in any given situation. But people aren't characters on a sitcom, or in a novel--they don't have well-defined character archetypes with predictable tropes to look out for, they don't listen to you just because you are the hero of your own story. They, too, are the heroes of their own stories.
On that note, since the cosm is built entirely around para-me's, I have to be very careful not to get narcissistic or self-centered. Only one world revolves around me, and unfortunately it isn't the one I live my daily life in.

The Micro Factory, a workshop where they share more than tools

In Anderlecht –one of the municipalities of the region of Brussels-Capital-, the Micro Factory offers a space for inspiration and co-creation to professional craftsmen or Sunday DIYers. The opportunity to share equipment, wishes and skills. And to relocate the production of objects in cities.
A little bit of sandpaper here, a final adjustment there. Against a backdrop of jazzy music, Olivier is putting the finishing touches to the assembly of the Victor Fund[1] book boxes which are about to be placed in two Brussels restaurants. In the metal workshop, a few meters away, Sébastien for his part is finishing the welding of elements for the manufacture of bookshelves for a literary café which will soon open its doors in the centre of the capital. In another room, right next to the common table where we spend as much time "designing on the computer as eating pretzels", Rima shapes table accessories using techniques from the jewellery store.
We are in Anderlecht, a stone's throw from the Brussels-Charleroi canal, where the Micro Factory[2] has established its quarters in an old building of Bruxelles-Propreté[3]. A vast space of 650 square meters where both experienced craftsmen and Sunday handymen and artists come together.
"Here, we are in the soft zone. This partition made with salvaged glass separates what is noisier and dustier from what is less. There is a corner dedicated to textile work. Overthere, these are the screen printing and printing equipment. There, a table for the electronics. There again, a booth for painting and stuff that smells bad ... ", explains Gilles Pinault, taking us around, punctuated by an impressive list of tools that can be found there: 3D printer, thermoforming machine, laser cutting machine, digital milling machine for metal, wood lathe… There are many.
"We could point the finger in any direction, I could tell you a story about the machine," he smiles.
A place to go from idea to realization
While some of this equipment belongs to the Micro Factory, most of it is the property of its users who leave them at the disposal of the community. “The deal is that people can leave their tools in their personal space or in the common. If they're in the common, it's for common use. It works a lot on trust. But people meet there because it is a free hosting of their machines. This saves them having to rent a clean place ", continues Gilles.
Born in the bubbling spirit of our guide, this shared workshop project took a few years to build. "I am an architect by training, I did a little virtual reality and I am rather a handyman in everything", he summarizes. Entrepreneur too, since he was one of the co-founders of Softkinetic,[4] this small Belgian company specializing in 3D imaging and motion analysis software, sold to the giant Sony in 2016. "The archetype of the start-up who has grown up and who is doing the rounds of investors. I saw that what the company needed now was more management and processes, than developing new ideas. “,says Gilles. His thing is to do things. And, obviously, he's rarely lacking in imagination.
Three years earlier, he had set up with his wife and a few friends regular meetings to materialize "lots of ideas that we have always had in mind without taking the time to realize them". DIY workshops, therefore, organized in each other's salons. The embryo of the Micro Factory was born.
But the participants quickly felt cramped. Inspired by American "makerspaces", they therefore set out to find a place where they could more widely express their creativity while sharing their tools. Together, they will thus occupy "a somewhat rotten squat of artists" in Saint-Gilles, then a building on temporary rental in the city centre.
In 2016, the day of Softkinetic's sale, he decided to take the plunge and devote himself completely to the Micro Factory project. He then sets out in search of a "real" building where it could develop and structure itself over time. Renovated as part of projects supported by the European EFRD fund[5], the Bruxelles-Propreté building offers it an ideal base. "We got a reduced rent and a ten-year lease. It is important because we could not cope with the market price. This allowed us to make somewhat ambitious arrangements."
Switch to a cooperative and gain impact
If it functions a bit like a de facto association, the Micro Factory has in practice been created on the basis of an Limited company (Ltd) linked to the former activities of Gilles Pinault. "It was easier to start. Technically, I am the manager, but in practice not at all", explains the person who now has the wish to switch the project under the status of cooperative. A status which corresponds more to the spirit of sharing that he wants to encourage. "This will make it possible in particular to carry out the purchase of machines in common and to involve everyone in the decisions. Today, I still have a limiting effect. People do not dare to do certain things without 'asking Gilles '. It will help them feel at home. "
The project, which he financed largely on his own funds with a few other contributors, must also evolve to achieve economic equilibrium, which is not the case as it stands. "Our break-even point is 9000 euros per month, which means about 200 users. The cooperative will collectively take new directions. Do we want to limit ourselves to 30 hyper professional members who pay € 300 per month or 200 members who pay 45 €? Should we not operate other than by subscription mode and try to remunerate the Micro Factory on the basis of the projects that are carried out there, by highlighting the diversity of skills that are offered? We can take these decisions together, ” he argues.
Pass the series threshold
Currently, most of the creations that come out of these workshops are prototypes or unique pieces. The goal is to move towards a professional production of objects in small series, adds Gilles Pinault. "How to make twenty tables a month rather than three? To have a local impact beyond ideas, we must achieve a more affordable economic dimension. If we want to bring back work and the production of products to the cities, transmit skills, this involves production accessible to as many people as possible without switching to the Ikea model. "
A workshop subscription rather than fitness
Two years later, the Micro Factory has 100 to 150 users, who have subscribed to its subscription system. "It's a bit like in a fitness room. We offer a monthly subscription system that offers flexible access ranges for 50 to 150 euros per month", continues Gilles Pinault, who insists on the continued group dynamic.
"Someone who comes for just an hour to use the machines doesn't really fit into the intended philosophy," which consists of facilitating links and collaboration between participants. It is, for example, the regulars who welcome new visitors and accompany their first steps. The "pros" also advise the "amateurs" and generally speaking, each other's creativity and skills feed on each other.
It is this spirit that excited Olivier who, alongside his work in the field of opinion polls, chose to embark on an activity of craftsman-cabinetmaker. "Rather than settling in my small basement or renting a workshop alone, it was obvious to come here on my first visit", he says, emphasizing the conviviality and the atmosphere that reigns. at the Micro Factory.
"Everyone works on their projects, but there is an exchange of ideas which takes place during the discussions and even in the practical realization. Multidisciplinarity is another interesting aspect that attracted me: being able to move from one area to the next. I am particularly in the process of training myself in metalwork, which will allow me, for example, to offer a table combining two materials. It is really a breath of fresh air to come and work here. "

[1] The Victor Fund was created in memory of Victor Van de Woestyne who died accidentally in Brussels on November 4, 2016. In memory of Victor and to give sense to what does not have, his parents decided to create a Fund whose objective is to encourage young people between the ages of 12 and 15 to read. At this age, adolescents discover a new school environment, new friends, new activities. And even good readers often reduce the time they spend exploring books. Through its concrete and targeted actions, the Victor Fund wants to participate in an active, fun and radiant approach in favor of reading. https://www.lefondsvictor.be/ [2] The Micro Factory is a shared manufacturing workshop, based on participation and pooling. The Man on St. Charles
And it seemed, at last, that the heavy veil of summer had lifted. The oppressive, muggy air gave way to a gentle breeze, blue skies, yellow sun--autumn, early, had come. I was halfway through my delivery shift, admiring the saffire blue above me, and noticing the bigger-than-usual crowd on the street--I knew why they were here. On such a beautiful day, it was hard to believe that just a few hundred miles away, a hurricane was decimating an entire state, much like one did here twelve years ago. And a thought struck me: How beautiful, if not a tad ironic, that refugees fleeing a hurricane would instinctively flock to New Orleans. At any rate, they were welcome here--Lord knows that we New Orleanians understand their plight. It was late afternoon when I set out to deliver a load of cheeseburgers to a hotel in the Garden District. The sky was turning a deeper blue, and the sun shining down through the skyscrapers filled me with a golden warmth. I felt good, and light, as I mounted my bike and began peddling down St. Charles avenue. I made it no more than two blocks, where I had to stop for a traffic light. That’s where I saw him. How or why he grabbed my attention, amongst the crowd, I cannot tell you. At the corner, a crowd of people were waiting for the St. Charles streetcar. Most of them were young, all of them were drunk and decked out with mardi gras beads--the archetypical tourist. Then there was this man, older, sitting on the ground. He was in pain. To most, he was invisible. But he was the only person that I could really see on that corner. The light turned green. I hesitated. I looked at the man, head in his hands, and I felt something tight forming in my chest. I dismounted from my bike and I approached him. He did not look up as I stood before him. “Hey mister,” I said. “Is everything O.K.?” He looked up from his hands, his eyes bleery and red. He had dark hair and a dark, wrinkled face. He did not respond to my question, so I asked him again, in a different language: “Que paso?” His lips moved silently for a moment, and then he spoke: “Irma,” he said. “mi casa, mi familia, ido.” My heart froze. “Tu familia?” I said. “Muerte?” His eyes grew heavier with tears, and he shrugged. What he said next was beyond my rudimentary understanding of Spanish, but what I gathered was he had been separated from his family while fleeing Florida--he didn’t say dead. I looked at him sternly. “Tu familia....es....O.K.” He nodded his head solemnly, staring straight ahead but at nothing in particular. I asked him: “Donde tu dormir?” He wiped a tear from his cheek and shrugged. I wished so badly that there was something I could do for him. “Are you hungry?” I asked him, in English. He didn’t understand, so I mimed my question and asked it again. His eyes widened, but he didn’t respond. I pulled a box of cheeseburgers and fries from the bike basket, and I held it out to him. With eyes wet, hands shaking, he took the box from me. He began to thank me, and I said: “No, no; para ti comer. Es O.K.” I turned my bike around and peddled back towards the restaraunt. I would tell them that I dropped one of the burgers on the ground.

Hermaphrodite : The Union of Opposites
'The hermaphrodite means nothing less than a union of the strongest and most striking opposites… The primordial idea has become a symbol of the creative union of opposites, “uniting symbol” in the literal sense ….its power to unite opposites, mediates between the unconscious substratum and the conscious mind.' (CW 9i, para. 292-4)

This ceramic rendering of the teasel bract looks at first glance to be a horn, a masculine symbol. However, the open fold which has a calla lily apperance is distinctly female. Amplification of the symbol as the Hermaphrodite archetype symbolising unified opposites reminds me of the use of lilly at marriage. Further to this, in medieval artwork the Annunciation often feature a lilly. This echoes the raven previously mentioned, who as a messenger links two worlds.

This object is placed between the primordial images above and the grounded objects below. This is significant in light of the fact that Jung continues to point out that the hermaphrodite " throws a bridge between present-day consciousness, always in danger of losing its roots, and the natural, unconscious, instinctive wholeness of primeval times" (ibid).

CONGRATULATIONS, RED!
You have been accepted for the role of TATIANA LANTSOV. Reading this application made me legitimately laugh out loud -- in the best of ways. She is tenacious, bratty, frivolous, and conniving in the best of ways. A character to remember, a character that will leave you legitimately shook. You captured all of that and more in this single application. I don’t think I could ever see anyone more fitting to portray Tatiana than you. Parts of your application had me laughing in near tears, while others had me feeling sad for the girl that could be so much more. I cannot wait for you to reign her holy terror on the dash and I cannot wait to see how she unfolds in the world of Ravka. Thank you, thank you, thank you so much for this application! You have 24 HOURS to send in your account. Also, remember to look at the CHECKLIST. Welcome to Ravka!
OUT OF CHARACTER
ALIAS: Rita (if that gets confusing since there’s also a Rita character, I can just go by Red?)
PREFERRED PRONOUNS: she/her
AGE: 20
TIMEZONE & ACTIVITY LEVEL: 6 – The deadline for my internship report is June 20th, and though it’s finished atm, I know I’m gonna be stressing out about it on that first deadline day or so, so I won’t be very active. After that, prepare to never get rid of me. I am halfway through an internship at a news agency, and since I no longer have classes but can’t start publishing things because I chose politics and need a lot of time to get familiar with the specifics of how parliament works until they’re sure I won’t fuck up, I’m finding myself with more free time than I’ve had in months.

IN CHARACTER
DESIRED CHARACTER: Tatiana Dmitrievna Lantsov
WHAT DREW YOU TO THIS CHARACTER?
I have always been fascinated by people who are completely removed from reality.
It’s only natural, then, that one of my favorite archetypes has long since become that of the bad, mad aristocrat - the guileless narcissist dripping with entitlement, oblivious to their own emotional vacancy. Tatiana, with all her envy and penchant for childish grudges, is one of such aristocrats.
But the fun is always in seeing beneath that, isn’t it? Tatiana actually reminds me of Veda Pierce, another rotten, irredeemable brat, but one whose motivations are never explained in the source material, and that I’ve always speculated about.
Tatiana may be frivolous and mean but she’s also quite pitiful. She’s never learnt how to love, how to think, how to work an honest day… Her upbringing left her so blissfully unaware of the real world, such a stranger to pain and want, that she’s forced to make up large problems out of small inconveniences and takes even the grandest things in her life for granted. The girl was denied a large part of what makes a person a person, and with the entitlement instilled into her from birth, it’s really no wonder that that she grew into a monster.
Could she still have become someone good? Sure! Plenty of people turned out a lot better after surviving a lot worse than being a poor little rich girl. It’s not about excusing her. But there are definitely reasons that make Tatiana who she is.
I’d love to get to explore the heart of Tatiana, small and cold and vacant as it may be, to get to the core of a sort of character that is often relegated to the role of minor antagonist in other people’s stories.
I won’t pretend that the Barbie Ferreira faceclaim left me totally cold either. I adore her and leapt with joy as soon as I saw you were using her for a character. Barbie has such a captivating, beautifully decadent look to her – I could honestly go on and on about how striking she is, and she’s absolutely perfect for Tatiana!
WHAT FUTURE PLOT IDEAS DID YOU HAVE IN MIND?
-If she were to think clearly, Tatiana would find that she doesn’t want the royal family to fall. That would put her in a very bad position and she evidently does not want to be in it. But Tatiana isn’t thinking clearly. She isn’t and she won’t. A part of her will always ache to see those who fancy themselves above her knocked down from their heights and she’d go against her own self-interest to do it. So if someone were to, let’s say, approach her and bargain with her to spy on her cousin Ana or spread rumors about Anton (which she probably already does, with some discretion), she could easily be persuaded to. She probably wouldn’t even anticipate the dire, dire consequences her actions could have. I like the idea of Tatiana being an instrument to sabotage the royal family without realizing that their fall would bring her down with them.
-I also want to explore the courtship from hell™ with Ilya like crazy! I’d love to see a liaisons dangereuses type of dynamic develop between them, with Tatiana trying to destroy any girl he sleeps with and going atomic on the whole seduction aspect of the issue, eventually ending with a “if I can’t have you no one else will” kind of thing.
- I think it would be fun to explore a rivalry with Darya? Tatiana hates and envies Anastasia with every beat of her black heart, but she loves them too. The thought of being replaced in their heart probably kills her, and she must hate the warmth between her cousin and the Voronov girl.
- One of the things that I’d be the most interested in exploring with Tatiana would be a connection with someone, either grisha or not, who is actually dangerous. Maybe she pisses them off, maybe she amuses them because of how shameless she is, whatever. I just want her to get close enough for them to burst her bubble a little, to make her see that there are people capable of far worse than she is. And not necessarily because they’re worse people, you see? Only because they’ve been had a lifetime of hardship and jumping over loops that never existed in her sheltered life – because they’re better at being bad.
WOULD YOU BE WILLING TO HAVE YOUR CHARACTER DIE?: Yes! I wouldn’t want her to get killed off before I had a chance to explore the ideas I have on her, but if it eventually made sense to the plot, I wouldn’t be opposed to it at all! Let’s be honest: Tatiana, at least as she is now, is probably not well-equipped to survive much…
IN DEPTH
IN CHARACTER PARA SAMPLE(S):
She wanted to gauge out its eyes and eat them.
Two red gems in a golden necklace, daring her to run her fingers through their surface – bloody and very, very red. She’d cut her teeth if she bit through it. And it only made the urge to press them against her lips all the more tempting, to kiss them before wrapping them around her neck as the other one had.
“Isn’t it lovely?”, Anastasia asked, and Tatiana was plunged back into her cousin’s bedroom, sunk on the divan while the little fool twirled away and banished the red in a fluttering haze of white silk.
“Oh, beautiful”, she spat.
But her cousin was not beautiful. In the eyes of peasants and of the new bourgeoisie, perhaps, untrained to the subtleties of it. Tatiana had finer tastes, a keener eye. Their eyes were too round, the poise in their movements too calculated to hold any grace. Theirs was the beauty of the peasant girl, gone with the first fallen leaf – she did not know how to be a proper princess and it did not belong to them.
“Tatiana”, they called, “are you upset?”
She hadn’t noticed how the hunger had seeped into her features, twisting their softness with a child’s angry pout. A stranger would have found the sight of it juvenile, even endearing. The servants would have quaked in their boots.
“I am not.” But how couldn’t she be, with such a great injustice dangling before her? All the diamonds and emeralds in the world did not matter. She might as well have been dressed in rags without the glorious necklace Anastasia had taken.
“You”, she snapped, pointing towards the nearest servant, “bring me a glass of kvas this instant.”
The mousy boy barely glanced at her before rushing out of the room, long warned of the screams that would come should he take too long to acquiesce. A tall woman entered in his stead. Sour and homely, unworthy of interest.
And yet the voice was cavernous, too proud for a woman of her station.
“The Queen requests your Highness’s presence”, she announced, not meriting Tatiana with a single glance. But oh, how she looked at Ana. Like a fire in winter, her eyes reflecting its warmth despite all the coldness of her posture. For a moment, she forgot to want the eyes in the necklace, the red jewels. She wanted the woman’s colorless ones instead.
That was no way to look at one’s betters.
“Excuse me.”
Anastasia didn’t protest, didn’t so much as ask what the servant wanted. She turned around like an obedient little dove, dropping the necklace on the nearest dresser. They were a haze of white when they left the room, flowing fabric trailing after their heavy black curls.
“Sooka.”
Curse her, she thought, curse her and her bloodline and her blasted crown and all the ugly suitors that may worship at her bland little feet.
Tatiana stretched her legs, her bare feet, scowling at the whiteness of her skin. Rita Jacos had promised to fix its pastiness, but she could still see something waxy, something unworthy of her perfection. And so was the room.
Once, in another room, Tatiana had been read tales of the old Os Alta. She had been very small, then, wrapped in fine frills and with her bare feet dangling from the lap of the old, frumpy woman she had once loved. It didn’t hurt to think of Nanny Baluskaya now – she had been dead for too long. She could hardly recall the texture of the old lady’s wrinkled hands, the frost in her voice when she spoke of the large, unforgiving land they called home and its days of sunlight.
“No mama”, she would order, “tell me more of the palace. I want to hear of the princes and the princesses, not of peasants and wheat!”
And so Mama would tell her of gold and rubies and a time where the palace walls had been draped in them and Tatiana could never understand why it was that the Lantsov’s could not live as lavishly as their ancestors had. The war and the wheat were the peasant’s to worry about, the darkness a grisha affair, none of them of any concern to the nobility.
Tatiana knew now, with her bare feet dangling from the divan and no old woman to hold her, that she would have brought Os Alta to its glory days if she’d been a princess. They’d have red drapes and golden embroidery, heads of the finest beasts mounted on the walls. It infuriated her to think of what could have been.
Until her dark eyes met the red ones across the room.
She felt a smile curl her lips, a quick flash of sharp teeth that nearly stopped the servant on his track when he came to deliver the kvas. Tatiana eyed him with contempt before taking her glass, and tried to keep him from seeing that the smile came from his hesitation as well. Was it for the beauty, she wondered, or for the fear? It didn’t much matter – and neither did he.
Tatiana rose from the divan, glass still in hand, and walked to the drawer to wrap her other greedy hand around the necklace. She marveled at the weight of the gold in her palm. The sly smile returned and then…
She threw it against a mirror in the opposite wall.
It survived, of course. Its eyes were glistening amongst the gold and shards of glass, oblivious to the devastation Tatiana had meant to cause. And the sound of the shattering mirror had nothing on the scream that left her throat. Her freckled cheeks grew red, her throat sore.
“Has something-” the servant didn’t get to finish his sentence before she turned around to throw the glass his way. It shattered against the wall behind him and the boy was left shaking, cowering at her.
“What did you do?”, she yelled, “Do you know how many of you that necklace is worth, you little pig?”
There was a tinge of perversity to it, at first, the hint of a smile in her distorted lips. But Tatiana burnt through it very quickly. At last, the fire of righteous indignation took her, and she had nothing but anger boiling in her blood.
“Please”, the boy begged, “I did nothing. I will call for my mother, she will settle it!”
“Mother?”
What a laugh, what a riot - for the little fool to think he was the son of anyone of worth! She raised her hand and delivered a swift blow across his face.
He began to sob.
“My – my- my mother is the head of the servants, you see?”
Her nose wrinkled in disgust. What did it matter that he was the son of the arrogant woman that had called for her cousin? It shouldn’t even have infuriated her as deeply as it did. It shouldn’t. It shouldn’t! She struck the boy twice as hard for daring to voice his unfortunate parentage. Surely he must have known, must have seen how the woman had ignored her – the filthy ugly rat.
The scream that left her throat had nothing human to it, nothing but the full depth of madness in the world, the chaos that must have existed in the parts of Ravka the darkness had long taken. It broke through Tatiana’s body, through her chest. The grief of being made to feel nothing reminded her that she was alive.
“They should have you hung by your entrails and fed to your mama for dinner”, she pronounced every syllable with excruciating clarity, meeting the boy’s gaze for the first time. She saw nothing but the fear in him, the pathetic subservience. And he saw something terrifying.
Her, Tatiana thought, and the word held all the triumph in the world – her saw her.
She raised her head to find a guard walking in their direction, hesitant for only a moment before he too grabbed the boy by the arm. They couldn’t hurt her – not if she screamed, mangled or killed. Her blood was purer than any part of them.
“Is this how you repay my beloved cousin for her kindness?” She was yelling again, all the self-righteousness of a judge with the shrewdness of a harpy.
Tatiana didn’t merit the guard with a glance until a few moments later, when she spoke in his direction. “I suppose the filthy little fleabag meant to break the necklace! But, as you must know, someone like him wouldn’t know the first thing about how strong the piece is. He broke the mirror instead!”
“I could have hurt myself”, she continued, her voice rising an octave higher, “I could have been blinded by the broken glass!”
The guard turned somber. And Tatiana, for all her rage, began to feel a tingle of satisfaction. She laughed when the man dragged the servant away, the taste of it far sweeter than of the bitter kvas.
“Go on little malen'kaya krysa, squeal!”
Tatiana would never know what had happened to the boy and his mother - she would never care. But she did, for the faintest moment, care to know what took the guard’s expression before he turned away to drag the boy.
She would have never have suspected it to be boredom.
CHARACTER HEADCANONS:
-Tatiana had a vast sum of pets during her childhood: a cat, a dog, a pony, a caged lark, even a wildcat. She remembers their names, their beauty and the passing interest they held, and will occasionally mention them. What she forgets is exactly why she was bored of them or what her father did to them afterwards. It’s not something she often thinks about.
-She’s a virgin. Not in the frail, cowardly way some girls are, with their dry entrails and their tiresome insecurities. No, because Tatiana would never reduce herself to that kind of thing. But she has known who will take her virginity since she was a very young girl. She’s disgusted by most men - bored by the young ones, who will avert their eyes from her chest and tremble in her presence, and furious at the old, who open their ghastly mouths and smile like she’s nothing but a piece of flesh. It’s nearly as bad as the rage when they won’t look at her, really… She would have all their heads as a queen. But not his. She’d much rather have Ilya Tsarov’s head intact. He is power, beauty, ice carved into man. Why would she want any of those beastly creatures, when she can have him? Besides, virginity can be a weapon in itself. Tatiana tells herself that she’s quite knowledgeable about the appetites of the flesh already, and that being a virgin doesn’t really put her at a disadvantage against other people. It’s a shame that there are butterflies in her stomach whenever someone comes close to touching her. She’s getting tired of waiting. There’s a good chance she’ll grow irritated soon enough, and an irritated Duchess Tatiana Lantsov is not an enemy Ilya Tsarov wants to face.
- She is plagued by the persistence of a childhood nickname. Tati – a plain, playful thing fit for a bitch or a servant, cracking on the tongues of those not fit to address her even by her proper title. The lowly ones have long learnt not to use it, lest they incur on her wrath. It’s only when those of royal blood utter it that Tatiana is forced to bite down her rage and choke on blackness and bile before she can bite back.
-[TW: Emotional abuse, arranged marriage, just a fucking horror story in general] She didn’t come from love, as some terrible things do. “I will not marry him”, Natalya had said, trembling as they wrapped the gold around her neck. But they painted her mouth, poured something fiery down her throat, and she was married by the morning. They laughed at the foolish girl in her drunken haze, the Queen’s youngest and prettiest sister. She was seventeen. Tatiana’s father was a clever man, rich in name and coin, short and stout, but nonetheless blessed with a slimy smile and an unassuming charm that helped him pull the strings of everyone around him. The truth was that Grigori wanted the Lantsov name for his children, and there was little anyone could have done to stop him. He tried to get Natalya to love him, truly. Why wouldn’t he have? She was so lovely - her stupidity was only another of her many charms. He lavished her in jewelry and ignored the way she would flinch at his touch. It wasn’t his fault he grew bored of her. Her resistance would have tattered through any man’s nerves, and young girls could be quite dull. Tatiana was born a year after they’d married, wide-eyed and even lovelier than her mother. And saints, was she adored! Of course, Natalya was never very present when her daughter was a child, off with her soldiers and the things they gave her to dream… But she more than made up for it with her gifts, with the desperate kisses she would plant on her little girl’s face. Tatiana could never quite understand what was wrong with her mother. But she soon realized that the more accusations of abandonment she made, the more fervent Natalya’s adoration would be. So she grew fluent in the language of pouts and shrieking, saving the best for when her father came to visit. Oh, how Grigori loves her beauty, her pride, the nobility that she embodies! He is, and has always been, utterly enchanted by everything about her. It doesn’t keep him from using her to control Natalya, of course, keeping his wife’s sense of worth at a manageable low by reminding her of what a terrible mother she is, how unloved she is even by her only child. But Grigori likes to think it’s one of the many things he and Tatiana share. He’s sure that there’s a strong bond between them, that he could control her if he really wanted to – the fact that she’s almost as selfish as he is has to mean something!
-Tatiana isn’t stupid - she’s only remarkable at making herself seem so. She’s a clever enough girl and even had a brain for mathematics as a child. She was good at history and geography as well. She’d develop obsessions with different lands and eras, dressing herself and decorating her room in their likeness. But they were nothing but varnish with which to cover her true interest, colorful pieces to be forgotten when the season passed. What she truly loved was her vanity, the details of a world she was sure was all hers to take. And that’s a very stupid thing to think, particularly for a sheltered girl who’s never known loss or had any sort of power that didn’t come from a name or a sore throat. It’s the sort of smug stupidity that can bleed into everything one does.
-Tatiana is an occasional reader, but doesn’t really have the mental persistence for complicated literature. She devours romance novels. The silly girls and and bland boys in their pages amuse her, and she tells herself that’s why she can’t stop reading them. She was also fond of tales of adventurers and explorers as a child, but has long abandoned them to the dust.
-She’s a marvelous dancer, a pitiful sower and an atrocious singer.
-“Make me”, she tells her, and does not say beautiful. Tatiana knows she is beautiful. She knows, and it only makes the flaws all the more glaring, the indifference with which some look at her all the more hurtful. The approval of the others is meaningless. “Make me”, she tells her, “make me perfect”.
EXTRAS:
Inspiration:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31rVmUuPErQ – Remember how I mentioned that Tatiana reminded me of Veda Pierce and that my take on her was sort of inspired on the character? Veda is middle-class turned new money rather than aristocracy but watch this video and tell me if the utterly delusional, juvenile, hurtful rant around 2:06 and the little fit at the end aren’t SO Tatiana. “But why Veda?” Because she’s a cunt, Mildred, that’s why <3 I listened to this whenever I needed inspiration for the app tbh.
Songs for Tatiana:
(not long, organized or consistent enough to be a playlist, but a valiant attempt nonetheless)
Beauty is empty, mars argo
I see you staring in your mirror
What will it take for you to see
Your pretty smile is a monster
And your beauty is empty
Red lips, Sky Ferreira
Little bitch
Growing so bored of your fits
‘Cause sooner or later, you’re done
And down with the worms
And no one remembers your name
Too bad
Primadonna, Mariana and the diamonds -
I can’t help but I need it all
The primadonna life, the rise and fall
You say that I’m kinda difficult
But it’s always someone else’s fault
Got you wrapped around my finger, babe
You can count on me to misbehave
And I’m sad to the core, core, core
Every day is a chore, chore, chore
When you feel of a whole more more
I wanna be adored
(just the entire fucking song tbh)
Beautiful, Dirty, Rich – Lady Gaga
Bang bang, we’re beautiful and dirty rich – I know this seems hella weak, but the song is one I could see as a soundtrack while Tatiana walks down a room? XD
Gold, Guns, Girls – Metric
All the gold and the guns in the world (couldn’t get you off)
All the gold and the guns and the girls (couldn’t get you off)
All the boys, all the choices in the world
(…)
Is it ever gonna be enough?
Yellow Flicker Beat – Lorde
My blood is a flood of rubies, precious stones
It keeps my veins hot, the fires find a home in me
(…)
They used to shout my name, now they whisper it
I’m speeding up and this is the
Red, orange, yellow flicker beat sparking up my heart
