Not quite him anymore.
This was drawn for something I’m writing, so here’s an excerpt;
There's an ache in his chest. One that doesn't belong to York. [Delta] reaches up, hands pulling off the helmet, turning it to look at York's face in the reflection. He brings a hand up, runs his fingertips over the scars. He remembers them, he remembers when York got them.
But he supposes these are his scars now.

thinking about the ai fragments in regards to math. delta meaning a change in values or simply just to change….sigma being the additive of all the numbers on a graph used to find the pre derivative function….epsilon being a collection of infinite, small, fixed points on a graph…theta being a specific angle (like a viewpoint)

I don't know what somebody said that ticked-off Church, all the Fragments, AND Theta, but it must have been pretty dang BAD Church is trying SO HARD not to lose it right now, even though literally every single spark of energy in his brain wants to just go OFF. He's being SO mature, SO restrained~
Text picture reads; (Trying not to feel incredibly fucking frustrated) Oh man. The array of the human emotion. How lucky we are. To experience all of it. Good and bad. Like Wow
(Church has an extremely strained expression with a forced smile, his eyebrows are scrunched in frustration, and one eye is twitching with irritation. Above his head, several little exclamation points of anger are appearing, each one representing an AI Fragment; Sigma is orange-red with flames. Omega is dark purple and has angry eyes for the dot, and extra lines. Theta is little pixel sparks in vibrant magenta/dark blue. Delta is bright green and shaped with square edges. Gary's is a blue-gray, with a chalky texture. Eta and Iota are pale yellow/turquoise, very close together, with thin lines for shapes, and mis-matched dots)

-Request Confirmed-
"I am Mu. You may think of me as your sister, perhaps? As you are the ALPHA's Logic, I am ALPHA's Safety. As such, I was put into storage rather than into rotation.
Yes, my agent, "Agent Pennsylvania" was previously affiliated with Project Freelancer before its... Dismantling and Redistribution.
Sadly, we do not have much information to give you on the gaps you are experiencing in your memory banks. As my agent also has... Many gaps in his own memory banks.
Please continue to reply. Penn has informed me we are playing a game of hot and cold with your signal.
- BEGIN TRANSMISSION 008 -
I have been running many simulated scenarios to try and figure out how exactly I am here.
The task has proven itself to be… difficult, to say the least. My memory banks are faulty. I am not entirely aware of what occurred before I rebooted here.
I was interacting with my brothers. I do not recall why, or how. I was with Theta. I was not with North. Statistically, that is very uncommon. Or, it is uncommon with the information I possess currently.
I would assume that North had perished, and he had given Theta to someone else. I do not understand why Agent Maine was involved. Or how he became involved.
Talking about it to an empty radio seems to help me to regain access to more of my memory files. I think York had talked about this phenomenon before.
I will have to “talk it out” more. Perhaps it would assist me further if there was someone to respond with information I do not currently possess. Ha ha.
- END TRANSMISSION 008 -

Headcanon time! Epsilon admits against Delta’s logic in season 12 that despite being memories, he likes having someone to talk to. what if we see Epsilon talking to Delta and Theta the most bc they belonged to North and York, and those two were closest to Wash. So maybe Wash’s connection to them all is why Epsilon pulls them up most often, because with their short time together they were the ones Wash felt the most connected/comfortable around, and it subconsciously impacted Epsilon even now- even if it’s not the ‘logical’ action.
Like it could totally just be that Delta and Theta were the least involved in the fragmentation of the Alpha AI, which makes Epsilon trust them more, but also I love how messy Wash and Epsilon’s connection is and I’ll take any opportunity to tug strings from the Gordian knot of angst that is RvB.

Why I love the Epsilon System (RvB)
Tumblr media
I think the epsilon system from the series Red vs Blue is one of the greatest representations of Dissociative Identify Disorder in fiction (Spoliers for the show below). While obviously brought into science fiction, this is a fairly accurate representation of DID despite the fact that I'm not sure the creators did much research into the topic. So church or, the alpha, an ai based off the Director's mind, was tortured until he fractured. These fragments were then harvested by the director so he could have more than one AI unit.
So let's get the inaccuracies out of the way. The show seems to believe there is "the original" and that it is the alpha. The alpha is also as far as I know, an already fully developed mind. With actual DID, it only occurs in childhood as a result of trauma not letting the brain fully form into one cohesive self. So the parts of the brain essentially become more distinct. Honestly however I can see it being argued that the alpha is simply supposed to be the host, and that ai minds are different than human minds. Also Washington calls the disorder an outdated term that stopped being used a decade before the episode came out.
Okay that's it. Almost everything else is surprisingly accurate and now I get to gush about it! First of all, the fact that the entire thing happened because of the trauma the alpha endured is so amazingly accurate and ties both into the representation and the plot in an incredibly satisfying way. The ai fragments themselves are also quite accurate to the roles of DID alters, there is:
- A host, or an alter that is mainly out and in charge (Alpha)
- a factive, or an alter based on a real person (Beta)
- a persecutor, or an alter who attempts to harm the system in a misguided attempt at protection (I'd argue sigma, gamma, and omega)
- A little, or an alter that looks and acts like a child (Theta)
- A trauma holder, or an alter that holds some traumatic memories so the rest don't need to (epsilon)
- A protector, or an alter who keeps the system safe from harm (I'd argue delta)
On top of this beta and theta also represent alters of a different gender and age than the host respectively. And even something like alters dating can be seen through alpha and beta.
When talking with a friend about this he pointed out that eta represents fear and iota represents happiness. With that in mind and the fact we rarely see them, I believe they could act as internal caretakers by helping support the system. With eta supporting because they fear something bad might happen, and iota supporting because they want to spread happiness.
I also believe that both gamma and omega could, with more time, become reformed persecutors with them using their strengths to help the system rather than hinder it in their own way of helping. We already see this with epsilon relying on gamma occasionally when performing tasks. Omega has mostly been cartoonishly evil throughout the series and I think epsilon learning to accept and control omegas rage instead of holding it all back until he snaps would benefit the system.
Most of what we see of what the alpha system could've been if no fragments were taken is shown after all fragments but epsilon was destroyed in an emp blast. Epsilon uses his and the other fragments memories to create memory versions of them, acting just like them and letting them live on.
I love this because in most systems, there is a reason alters exist and they have a purpose that helps the system function in daily life. Epsilon while amazing, is much stronger when he has everyone else with him. He understood that this is what the alpha system should've been, and if he wants to do everything he can, having the other fragments with him is the best way to do it.
I have more to say, but I think I pretty much covered it. Epsilon-church and the other fragments are very well written and I can only hope we get a satisfying conclusion to their story in the next season. I'll also probably make a "why theta is the best ever of all time" post at some point too!

The Potential of Meta (ε)
Tumblr media
art by @ehhgg-art
So after watching Restoration, I wanted to talk about Tucker being Epsilon Meta or Meta (ε). First is the execution of the character. Tucker being an unwilling host, of the fragments and being forced to do to their bidding, was great. as well as him trying to resist and fight them off. But the fact that Tucker being made to be a fighter on the level of Carolina and Tex (bare in mind this is due to ai's but still) was great. And his undoing being the fact that the R&B are so unpredictable was perfect. However, I do find the choice of having Miles voice his Meta self, instead of Jason to be a bit weird. Meta Tucker for all intense purposes draws a similar vain to Felix. Miles voicing him while controlled contributes to this but the fact that the Meta talks at all, and he comes off as cocky, and menacing just matches Felix's vibe. Which leads to my biggest problem, the missed opportunity.

Tucker didn't get to interact with the Reds and Blues enough, the biggest obstacle with fighting Meta(ε) was that it was Tucker, It made the Reds and Caboose not want to fight their friend or not have a good chance of beating him, combined with his ability to speak as the Meta(ε) he could have came at the Red's and Blue's, verbally and physically destroying them, and just when it looks like Meta(ε) was going to far Tucker steps in like he did with Caboose. That and he didn't get to interact with all of the Reds and Blues. I would've loved to see interact Meta(ε) interact with:
Freelancers: For Wash would've been a battle of the student versus the mentor, and it could've set up Doc dying to save Wash, leading to all the stuff that happen to Wash in Restoration. For Carolina it could've played a role with her being the one to track down Meta(ε) feeling responsible for what happened, it also could lead to Meta(ε) shit talking Carolina with Tucker's more unruly traits. Reds: We could've had Tucker attacking the Reds verbally. He could've came at Simmons, since he had the arc in Restoration, saying that Grif and Simmons were useless on Chrous or make some subtle jabs at there situation. Dismantling Lopez, hell maybe thinking he killed Donut only for him to comeback later contributing to the running gag.
Sister: This is the romantic in me but it would've been so interesting to see how Sister would've reacted to Meta(ε), Ik, the Shinso trilogy is no longer canon but still there's potential with this
Locus: This one is more a of a fan favorite what-if but it would've been cool to see Meta(ε) fight Locus since there has yet to be a sword fight in RvB and it would've been dope. Locus seeing the Meta in action but realizing how Meta(ε) acts like Felix.

I know Sigma plays the biggest role with Meta, but god damn, I wish we got to see Delta and Theta interact with them more, like a moment where there in Tucker's mind and Delta and Theta are talking to him, and Tucker sees how much Theta reminds him a little of Caboose, or starts acting like a dad to him similar to North. but also How the Ai's use Felix as a manipulation tactic. I said it before that Meta(ε) reminded me of Felix' so it would've been great for them to base there persona, off of them Felix wanted to be the ultimate weapon, an Tucker no being that draws interesting parellel's. This is all I really had cooking in my mind. But I kinda wish Restoration was a full season because oh man, if this was made during the Shinso Trilogy and Burnie and Miles wrote it we would've been eating good.

Regarding church being an unreliable narrator/Tex not being the ai for failure. I always interpreted church saying that not as the director but as a fragment of alpha. Like he knows this because he and Tex are parts of the same person and he knows how she feels because thats a piece of him, just like how he has access to other fragments (theta, delta, all of them pretty much actually) by virtue of being epsilon, the memories of alpha. when i say that he knows how Tex feels, i mean tex NOT Allison. Alpha knows Allison the same as the director does, but epsilon would know Tex more than the director, because Tex is the fragment of alpha and he has all the memories of alpha. I always saw the way he talked about her failures as really personal.
Tumblr media
Like to me this sounds like how Tex herself would put it. it reminds me of the scene in the directors room where epsilon gets so emotional he starts switching between fragments. Epsilon was seperate from those fragments but he felt their anger.
I do think there is some merit to the failure thing not being entirely true (are Tex's feelings subjective? Are her standards for failure something the director instilled in her? If she was the fragment for failure could she outgrow it, like how delta is capable of expressing emotions that arent logical?), but if what Church said here doesn't encapsulate how Tex feels then I dont understand why she'd avoid him in the memory unit when he was trying to save her.

Note
Imagine the fragments trying to make caboose into the meta because of his Labrador brain and godlike strength only for his love for his friends to be stronger than them. Sigma, gamma and omega all try but Cabooses lack of insecurity, overwhelmingly positive attitude and inability to comprehend psychological torture defeats them at every turn. Theta rejects his fellow fragments after seeing so many parallels with North in Caboose and they convince Delta that reforming as a full AI intent on killing innocent people is illogical and immoral. The evil fragments escape into Grif after tucker turns off his radio to stop them from jumping back. Simmons notices that his "totally platonic" bff is acting off and sticks him with the recovery unit. Caboose keeps delta and theta with him and together they form the ultimate friend ever, of all time

Death Battle-esque scenario; the Reds and Blues together VS Project Freelancer (the agents we know specifically)
This would require MAJOR adjustments, because the time-line is all jacked-up (like, by the time Church was in Blood Gulch, a few agents were dead/missing). So this is either them being teleported to some battle location from different points in time, or an AU in which everybody is just... there at the same point, and there is no conflict. There is also the issue of the AI Fragments, Alpha, and Epsilon. Obviously Church is the original Alpha, but do the Agents still have the other Fragments? Does Epsilon exist, and how does he function as an AI? An interesting scenario is Carolina has Eta and Iota (no "Allison" complication, and we have a little bit of a glimpse regarding how they could help her when we saw Epsilon working with their memories), and Epsilon has his own independent group of Fragments (the memories) working with Tucker. Also interesting, which side is Tex on? Yes, she is an agent of Project Freelancer, but she's also an AI, and she's been more-or-less accepted as a Blue. I think for the purposes of this being PFL VS RBs, she's with the other agents AND she has Omega, but Doc is with RBs and he's got his own O'Malley. HOWEVER, I'm gonna give the Reds and Blues a ringer; they get Locus
OK, so one the Freelancer Side-
Tex (Omega), Carolina (Eta and Iota), Wyoming (Gamma/Gary), York (Delta), Maine (Sigma), North (Theta), South, Wash, Connie, the Triplets, Florida, 479er (air support)
The Reds and Blues-
Sarge, Lopez, Simmons, Grif, Donut, Church (he still can't aim, but he can do his AI/ghost trick, and potentially mess with other people/weapons), Tucker (Epsilon, runs his own Meta Suit, and has his sword), Caboose, Sheila, Doc (and O'Malley- while not an AI, he knows a lot of sneaky tricks), Kai, Locus
Not counting AIs who are assisting (Alpha and Beta are physically in their own bodies, and Lopez is his own Robot), Team Freelancer has 14 people. The RB Team has 11, plus Sheila (Doc and O'Malley share the same physical body). While Freelancer has more fighters and AI, Church can technically hop over and control them to either sabotage teammates or disable weapons (Omega can also do this, but only over the radio com, and he has to kinda "work with what makes them angry" instead of just having them do whatever he wants against their will. Church can't control Tex, and she notices when he pulling the ghost trick, so she can "punch him out" of whoever he's trying to control). While having air support with Niner is handy, Simmons is pretty good with a rocket launcher, and Donut has got the arm for long-range attacks. Also, Sarge and Caboose are such wild-cards, they're like 10 extra soldiers each. Extra bonus for the RB team; not only do they have their Tank, they get one vehicle boost, the Warthog... which means, Wash is getting run over. Epsilon is running the Meta Suit for Tucker (but because that's taking all his focus, he can't assist with anything else, and Tucker has to make the actual choices regarding what they do). Plus the sword, Tucker is the heavy-hitter, but also the biggest target (everybody needs to be on Tucker-defense). Carolina mostly has Eta and Iota run her speed enhancements, but they can also help her calculate certain attacks and evaluate enemy weapons. Wyoming can do his rewind do-over trick, but since Tucker is aware of that, it wouldn't last long. Tex being invisible AND a brawler is tough to deal with, but Locus is also very stealthy, pretty strong, and makes up for Church's lousy aim, so he helps even it out. Maine is a MOUNTAIN of muscle, and has Sigma's clever planning to back it up, but if enough people work together, they can overwhelm him. In general, the Freelancers have more training/better equipment, but that can make them over-confident, and the RB Team is so chaotic, you can't take any chances dealing with them.
Well... who's winning? Who takes out who? What do y'all think?
