The Powerful Couple

Uh... No, not really. Anyway this update on my project is going to be short, because a) I wanted it done before taking another commission and b) I'm tireeed.

Cassandra always seemed like a very elegant and majestic character to me. Sharp, straight-forward and mature. So I gave her a trench coat with double belt, gold jewelry and high heels. I tried to stick to the 80s theme with pastel blues and pinks & with heavy make-up, but it all contrasts with her more professional nature. The braid was inspired by unique look of Cassandra's tail in the stageplays.

Don't ask what's in the box.

Here's some concepts. I have abandoned the collar later. And say hello to the Old D (he's still in works)!

To me Alonzo always seemed like Munkustrap's right hand. He's younger and bolder, flirty yet responsible and semi-mature. In other words - he's cool. You know what was cool back in the 80s? Jeans jackets and these type of shoes (totally not called Nike). Black patches on his hands are references to leather gloves.

And the sweater? Matching with Munkustrap, because literally nobody can tell me 'no' :)

I promise, the lock on Tugger's hair was the last change for him. My man is just so indecisive.

Okay, so this was for a writing event on a Pokemon forum (it's a small Pokemon forum) and the inspiration was a video I found years ago. Basically, it's based in the forum's fan region, and you had to write a journal entry based on doing something...I used my human names for Bombalurina, Tugger, and Munkustrap for it. I based the Pokemon they use on my Magic Cats post, so there we have it. Also, I used different fonts for each character, so it may not translate well. Anyway, enjoy!

May 15th

I don’t know how to start this, but somehow Travis decided to explore this cave near the Navirou River and drag all of us along. Me and Marcus have to keep track of him, all while dragging my sister and Marcus’s girlfriend Demeter all over the place. The cave was damp, and damper as we got deeper in, making me miserable, and Tarlavra was miserable too. Demeter was miserable too, with Voltaire refusing to come out of his ball. Both Travis and Marcus, on the other hand, were fine, happy in Travis’s case. I love him, but sometimes he doesn’t think ahead. Travis wanted to see where this cave would go, and he was hoping that maybe we could find the source of the river, seeing how it wasn’t documented yet. Why did our parents allow us to explore this region this summer again? To give us (Mainly me and Travis) an opportunity to gain enough credit to skip a grade. Just because Travis is the Ground type expert between us doesn’t mean that he should go into a cave willy nilly! Crap, I’m going off topic again. My Typhlosion wouldn’t let us go deeper in the cave without her protecting me (I love her so much) and providing us light (after the one time Trav decided to run into a cave dragging me along and ending up in complete darkness when we were ten and Tarlavra was a Cyndaquil).With her flames lighting up the cavern, Travis decided to talk about how the walls were made up a combination of what looked like a combination of sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, which was unusual for caves around here (how does he know that? I’m the one who took the forging and survival courses offered, because one of us has to make sure that my idiot boyfriend survives long enough to marry graduate with me), and this was such a find. Demeter, bless her, basically clung onto Marcus as we shared a look of exasperation at my boyfriend and Marcus’s younger brother.

I question every time I have to write this because I know that my weakness is writing while Travis is the better writer than me, but it was placed onto me because, and I quote, “You are the most straightforward between the four of you, and you can make sure that his thoughts on this expedition are clarified.” Jokes on you, I go onto tangents! Marc and Dem are the ones who should have asked! Of course, they each gave us roles according to our strengths. I’m the strategist, and occasional tailor for our little quartet, while Demeter is our photographer (which is amazing because this adventure goes into her photography credentials) and one of our solid voices of reason. Marcus is our general leader (who need Demeter to listen to him when I admit me and Travis get on his nerves, which is a lot of the time), and Travis is our resident Ground, Rock, and Steel enthusiast as well being my handsome rockstar boyfriend who helps me cook our meals while on this expedition. He loves messing with other people’s expectations for him, but the rest of us see him how he really is.

Shit, I did it again! Anyway, we went deeper into the cavern, and Travis finally cut off his rambling and shushed us. He asked me (because honestly my ears definitely are more sensitive than his) if his ears weren’t playing tricks on him and he heard rushing water. I’m glad he did ask me because I could hear it, so I followed my ears, with Travis making sure I didn’t run into anything because I’ve done this before and may have given myself a sprained wrist and plenty of cuts and bruises due to not looking where I was going. It took us a little while longer to get to the source but when we got to the source, all of us were surprised. It wasn’t just the source of the Navirou river, but a hot spring, surrounded by many crystallite structures littering the walls and ceiling. And, somehow, there was some kind of light glow coming from the crystals. Once we got to a good place to set up our little camp far enough away from the spring on a nearby rock shelf (with Travis’s approval even though both me and him are fifteen), we did some check like how we were taught. Marcus set up his water testing module while me and Demeter scouted so really good photo shots, some including our set up. While miserable in the cave system, Voltaire the Jolteon was out and pawing at the water, which I sneakily took a video of (both me and Dem found it so cute). Tarlavra sat herself the farest away from the water, and it looked to me that she was fighting herself from take a nap. Marc did his water testing, and declared it safe to drink and swim. He has his Vaporeon, River, scout underwater for any local Pokémon colonies (This is a reminder to me and anyone reading this account, a goal in this expedition was to identify what Pokémon lived here and if it completely necessary for the League to make certain areas in Meroi Protected Preservation Areas) while the rest of us make sure that the area was secure for us.

Hey, I stole this report journal from Beatrice, and I can clearly say that these crystalline structures already ring out to me that they should be a limited access area due to the natural beauty and the harmonic resonance-

Now, since I can continue this entry, I accidentally started singing what I thought was under my breath, when in reality the soundwaves amplified the acoustics and made Travis, then Marcus and Demeter join into my song. It was then we discovered that somehow, the crystals reflected the sound waves off of the hot spring. Once we hit the last chord (which sounded so beautiful like we were on the stage singing, only without using microphones to amplify our voices), Marc made the decision to recommend the restriction of this environment because once the song ended, a bunch of Pokémon popped their heads out from under the water. There was some more deep water Pokémon, like Relicanth, which I didn’t think would at least feel the soundwaves of our voices from under the water. Demeter did get the best shots of this, so they were included with our report, along side a video Travis did of me singing and the Pokémon living in the water watching like an audience of children, fascinated with my mini performance. As a music nerd, this cave just fascinates me because I want to bring my bassoon down here and record it, just for the reverb. As this expedition is a four-person effort, I will pass this journal expert to Marcus.

As the Team Leader, I highly recommend that this hot spring, which we have designated as the potential source of the Navirou River, as a restricted access, possibly for trainers who are cleared by the region professor, Professor Hemlock, and or fulfilled the Pokémon League requirements as a member of the Hall of Fame and cleared by the League Champion.

Marcus, that’s really dry. You have to have the respect of the Prof and Head Trainer of the League, simple as that.

I wrote 5 paragraphs. This assumes that this art piece takes place before a Christmas party. I have no idea where that came from. Also, apparently I think that Jemibub is giggling and Tuggerlina may have tickled her. Also no title, apparently. Word Doc named "Christmas Party JemiTuglurina Family". Honestly, I just wanted a tiny one. I may also have Lindsey Stirling's "Warmer in the Winter" running through my head right now.

 Jemima was trying to hold in her giggles as her parents ran around trying to help her auntie and uncle set up the decorations for their annual Christmas party. And what by she meant help, it really was Mummy trying to calm Auntie Demy down enough to prevent a nervous breakdown of trying to get the party perfect (Mummy already said that it was perfect and didn’t need anything more) and Daddy acting like a general nonsense because Uncle Munk was being slightly intense for a party. Jemima knew that she was quite smart like her mother, so she watched as her family was being silly. To her, it was quite silly, and Jemima was trying her best not to giggle. What she didn’t notice was the adults finally noticing her giggles, until strong arms picked her up. “I see that my Pixie thinks that this is funny.” Her daddy said, lifting her up, making her giggle even more. “Bomba, we have a Giggle Monster!”

Jemima could see her mummy trying to fight her own giggles, while her Auntie Demeter was failing to contain her own laughter. “That’s because she finds that her aunt and uncle are being silly!” As she gave a look full of love towards Jemima. Jemima, through her additional height from her daddy holding her, saw that Auntie Demeter gave her mummy a look.

Daddy then maneuvered Jemima to face him, and through her giggles, she shrieked “Daddy!” as he lifted her high.

“You know what giggle monsters need?” Daddy asked, with a look in his eye, “Tickles!” And he started tickling her, making her laugh.

Through her laughter, she heard her mummy say, “Now Tugger, don’t give her all the tickles.” And then Jemima felt her mother tickle her, making her laugh even louder. What felt like hours was a few minutes of the three of them collapsing into a giggling pile, Jemima calming down to a few giggles. With a few giggles, she felt her parents kissing her cheeks, holding her between them. No matter what, she always felt loved and safe with her parents.

So I've sunk a good chunk of time I'm sure could be put to good use elsewhere into looking at how consistent or variable the blocking for Moments of Happiness is, in terms of where the cats tend to be in proximity to each other. I used (and labelled) the 1998 film version as a kind of guide for myself to see how others compare with it.

And some things I've found are always consistent across many productions (mainly looking at replica ones here, such as Mexico 1991, Zurich 1991, 1998 film, etc. where I could actually see the cats and discern at least some of them. If the stage was mostly filled with the black void, I ignored those.)

Consistent across time and space and lifetimes:

Jemima/Sillabub, Coricopat, and Tantomile are ALWAYS grouped together, which makes sense.

Old Deuteronomy is always on the tyre above everyone.

Bombalurina and Munkustrap are always near/next to each other (see, Bombastrap was always canon. The stage blocking said so! THEY KISS right before Moments of Happiness in Moscow 2005/2006 in EXACTLY the same way that Demestrap or Demelonzo do in the spotlight right before "Magical Mr Mistoffelees"! Isn't this exactly the same energy...

As this?

Though from another recording of Moscow 2005 (probably the same performance, but focused more on Skimble), it appears that Bomba and Skimble are also an item. So I guess Moscow ships Bomba/Munk/Skimble then? ;)

Speaking of Bombastrap moments, Mannheim (2011) is also pretty into Bombastrap as well:

Now where was I? Oh right - more consistencies across time and space and lifetimes:

Jellylorum and Gus will always be together, if not in very close proximity to each other.

Tugger will (from what I've seen/guesstimated anyway) always enter and end up settling down a little ways from Old Deuteronomy on the junkyard at the same level as aforementioned Jellicle leader.

Munkustrap will tend to always be at the front, near-ish if not at downstage centre.

Mostly consistent (might vary occasionally, but rare):

Victoria is usually near Old Deuteronomy, whether sitting next to him or on the floor somewhere near him. I've seen ones where she's on her lonesome downstage, and if she is, tends to be near Alonzo.

If Mistoffelees is present at all, he will tend to be somewhere near Munkustrap, usually behind him (see: 1998 Cats, 1991/2 Zurich), or next to him a couple feet away (like in Hamburg 1995). However, in more recent productions (2011 onwards, starting with Mannheim, he tends to be sitting next to Old Deuteronomy (kind of similar to how Zurich Misto sits next to Old Doots near the end of "Old Deuteronomy"), including in the Oasis recordings, aforementioned Mannheim 2011, and the Broadway Revival of 2016. That said, especially in earlier recordings, he tends to be absent more often than not during Moments of Happiness.

Usually Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer are together, but occasionally will be sitting apart from each other (Madrid, for example, has Cassandra and Teazer sitting together. What's the ship name for that? Cassteazer?)

Cassandra tends to be stretching out in her own space but not completely isolating herself from others. She's just happy to Be Cat and stretch out long and luxuriously. However, in Madrid, she seems to be pretty comfy sitting next to/near Rumpleteazer who looks very happy about the arrangement.

Jenny tends to be sitting next to one or more of the younger cats like Teazer and Mungo (Zurich), or Pouncival (Madrid again). Makes sense, as one of her words is motherly, I believe.

Speaking of more modern productions, it also appears that Munk tends to be on his lonesome (nowhere near Bomba or anyone), at least in the revival and Oasis from what I've seen. Then again, even Jemima is separated from Tanto and Cori in the 2016 revival boot and I like it way more when all three are connecting hands like in original productions.

My thoughts on some of the observations:

Old Deuteronomy: As the leader of the Jellicle tribe, it makes complete sense that he is above everyone, sitting on the tyre, usually with Tugger and/or Mistoffelees sitting next to/near him. I have no complaints with this one - makes sense, is always very important.

Tantomile, Coricopat, and Sillabub/Jemima: Also makes complete sense to me, seeing as Jemima is the vessel for which Old Deuteronomy sends his message that he is trying to speak to the rest of the tribe. I wholeheartedly prefer the versions where the three hold hands, with the psychic twins supporting Sillabub/Jemima when she starts to sing. I don't like the 2016 revival where she is essentially separated from them, breaking that connection. I'm glad Oasis at least doesn't separate them, and keeps the original connection.

Jellylorum and Gus: Again, perfect sense. Jellylorum has a lot of admiration for Gus, and Gus clearly trusts Jellylorum and stays near her. Very critical to maintain that importance of their relationship, especially right before Gus's song.

Rum Tum Tugger: I like when he enters right next to Old Deuteronomy, and starts to goof off before quelling on seeing how sombre and disapproving Old Deuteronomy is of his antics right before such a serious moment. I've seen a Tugger that goes and nuzzles him fondly too, and another (maybe the same one) who literally sprawls every which way after greeting him. Because Tugger will do as he do do, and there's no doing anything about it.

Munkustrap and Bombalurina: I love that dynamic, and, well, Jack Rebaldi has LOTS to say on their relationship and I agree with all of it. Like Bomba yearning for a steady rock who will love her no matter what, and Munk yearning for that beautiful queen who will love him so deeply (to paraphrase Jack.) It's such a shame it's not a more popular ship, and surprising too, considering practically every bootleg I've seen (where I can see who's who anyway) up to Mannheim 2011 have had them paired together on stage.

Mistoffelees, Part 1: Near Munkustrap (1990s, with Hamburg 1999 being the last one I've seen that does it): I feel like this is reserved for Mistos that are played as a little more on the cusp of adulthood (recalling what Jacob Brent said about his Misto not being an adult, but not a kitten either. So too young to take over, too old to ignore, essentially ;)), and where Munk is more of a mentor figure to him (or at least someone he looks up to--hi Zurich, I see you again.) Again, I've only seen max three bootlegs (Zurich 1991/2, Paris 1990, and 1999 Hamburg) plus the 1998 film that does this, from what I've seen. Any others, Misto was entirely absent or he's next to Old Deut. If only we could see the OLC and OBC versions, where Misto is played much older, more in the same range and footing as Munkustrap. The only thing we have to go off of is one photo of Tim Scott in what I'm pretty sure is Moments of Happiness (judging by how sombre his Misto looks, and everything, I wouldn't be surprised if it were that song) - where he's more or less on his own, not sitting near Old Deut, though Munk could be just out of sight.

Mistoffelees Part 2: Next to Old Deuteronomy: Post-1998 film, I see this pretty much all the time, including Mannheim and all of the Oasis boots, and the 2016 revival. Coupled with what Jacob Brent said about Old Deuteronomy being Misto's dad, seeing how much more frequent this is really strengthens what he said in his podcast thing on youtube where he did a film commentary thing.

Victoria: I definitely prefer ones where she's sitting by Old Deuteronomy, emphasising again how she's also the newest (not the youngest) kitten there, rather than going off into her own space like in some productions. Dunno exactly why, but I think it's just sweeter when she's huddled up next to the Jellicle leader.

Wow, that was quite a long post and a lot of thoughts on Moments of Happiness! Would be interesting to hear what others think about all this as well!

jemima's littermates ⁕ anneli

anneli is one of the four kittens in bombalurina and tugger’s first litter . she was born the same time as her brother rocco , prompting their family to refer to them as ‘ the twins ’ though the kittens are all the same age . she’s inspired by sillabub , specifically the demestrap / fanon rendition . her personality is similar to jemima’s ( which is why she’s her preferred sibling ) , being young , sweet natured and affectionate with her family . however , anneli tends to resort to a reserved / shy approach when interacting with others ( especially non jellicles or ones her parents interact with less ) from being raised inside as a kitten with only her siblings and parents . she takes after her father , initially surprising her parents with how light her coat is - though it fades into the same color as tugger’s golden/brownish mane overtime . her favorite activity is playing with their owners' yarn . whenever she hears someone knitting , she’ll dash over and just create a mess .

rocco

rocco is the only tom of the litter . he’s bold compared to his polished sisters , making him his father’s mini . the more he was brought to the junkyard , others remarked how his personality tends to resemble both mungojerrie and rumpleteazer with his mischievous antics . whenever he’s bored , his father is his first target . from playing with his tail to nibbling on his mane , he follows him around the house till he crosses paths with anneli and leaves to bother her . not that tugger minds , as he sees himself the most in him .

like how jemima can be considered the baby of the tribe , delilah is the baby of the litter . initially , she concerned her parents with her small size and struggles nursing , questioning if she’d make it . fortunately , a miracle occurred and she survived . she often takes naps , her preferred spot being on top of bombalurina , rendering her unable to move without disturbing her kitten's sleep . she’s the most attached to her parents , always waddling over to tugger when bombalurina is busy . she tended to lean toward her mother as a kitten , confused by their heavy resemblance being so young and often earning a laugh from her parents when she’d call her her mirror . being the runt of the litter , she’s one of the reasons bombalurina and tugger chose to raise them indoors rather than the junkyard , worrying them with the potential dangers if she managed to run into macavity in the junkyard.

About your tags on my slow-blink post: if you scroll a little through my blog, you'd know that I am the very first person to absolutely not give a damn about anyone's headcanons. I have multiple family and ship headcanons that all contradict each other. Munkustrap & Tugger are siblings for you? Sure, have fun! Tugger and Munkustraps are lovers? Hell yeah! (My personal favourite!) Demestrap is my personal canon whenever I say so, and it isn't also when I say so. Whoever has a problem with that can go right out the door and off my blog, lmao.

Lange Rede, kurzer Sinn: Nobody's going to break in your door for not shipping a certain pairing (or for shipping it, for that matter!). You miiiight have to battle out a few annoying comments (I know I had to when me and two other people started posting Tuggerstrap stuff), but what are they gonna do? Send anons? Just block em. And after a while, more people may strut out and join in with you, which is always great fun!

Also cats (real cats) slow blink at any other cat they like and trust. They don't make a difference between befriended cats or cats they're fu- I mean, cat partners. XD (You can actually get random cats on the street to like you and follow you around just by squinting or slow-blinking at them! Tried and proved method. Source: me. I'm all neighbours cats' best friend. Also it's such fun when they blink back at you and you can think 'hell yeah, I speak Cat')

Sorry for the wall of text, but just know that I understand where you're coming from. I used to have the same fear about not hc'ing Tugger and Strap as siblings, but after blocking like two people and deleting one comment of a person who apparently couldn't read tags off a fic of mine it's great fun now! This ask became way longer than it was supposed to be. Anyhow. Have a lovely Tuesday! :}

Cats' ask game!!!

🐾 I discovered Cats in college when my soreity sister showed me the '98 DVD and I was hooked.

📌 Cats 2019's biggest mistake (other than the CGI) was having Rebel Wilson give commentary on everything; it was NOT funny. It was annoying!

🧵 My favorite production is the Troika tour 5 and 6. I love the designs and costumes; how pale Rumpleteazer is and how silly Pounicval looks :)

In terms of the development of actual relationships between characters, particularly when it comes to ships like Platoria and Demestrap, the revival and US tours offer a more comprehensive and coherent narrative. ( long post)

Having these characters interact and establish some form of connection before their defining moments as a couple significantly enhances the authenticity of their relationship. When there are prior interactions, it becomes easier for the audience to invest in the idea of these characters being together.

For instance, Platoria's lack of interactions beyond their Pas de deux left me feeling disconnected from their dynamic. Without a foundation of shared moments, their pas de deux might have been more impactful for Victoria as an individual rather than for her and Plato as a couple. The absence of interaction before or after the defining moment lead me to the impression that their relationship is somewhat one-dimensional.

Similarly, with Demestrap, the transition from a relationship that could be perceived as platonic to a romantic one feels abrupt and unexpected without sufficient prior interactions.

The light scene, while significant, could have been more effectively built upon if there were earlier instances where their bond hinted at a deeper connection. (but hey atleast they interact after their moment)

Comparing this with other ships, even those with debatable canon-ocity, we can observe that they often benefit from the more nuanced development in the revival. Tuggoffelees, for instance, share moments time together during Tugger's song and (in the bootleg I saw atleast) in peke & pollicles, creating a foundation for their relationship to grow and giving the audience a chance to witness the natural progression of their connection. I.e Mistoffelees's number.

For Demestrap, the inclusion of pairing them in "romantical cats" line at the beginning of the show serves as a foundation, hinting at their connection from the outset. This groundwork is then built upon by moments like the adorable nuzzle in the "Skimbleshanks" scene, which adds layers to their relationship and allows the audience to witness their affection in action. These interactions contribute to a sense of gradual development and authenticity.

Similarly, Platoria benefits from a consistent presence throughout key moments in the revival. Dancing together during Tugger's song and remaining close during the "Old Deuteronomy" scene showcase their bond in various contexts. These instances, among others, not only establish their connection but also provide opportunities for the audience to see how their relationship evolves and responds to different situations.

In essence, the inclusion of pre-established interactions between characters can pave the way for a more organic and believable development of relationships, making them feel less like they emerged out of thin air and more like a natural evolution of the characters' connections. This approach not only enhances the emotional resonance of the relationships but also provides the audience with a more satisfying and immersive storytelling experience.
