WIP Woooo! Word Count Achieved!

Yeah, so, I hoped to have hit 50k yesterday, but I didn't quite make it. This morning though? DONE! Hoping to keep up the 1,667 words a day trend to the end of the month, but particularly with my shift going from a 5am start to a 9am start so I can help out bakery for the week, well. We'll see.

The important part is that it's been an over all good writing month and, despite the demanding fuzzy who's not been letting me shift my sleep schedule back an hour, a good writing morning, and I feel like doing a bit of a triumph post.

So have a bit from the Next Big Thing that will probably take me five years to write!

...I will never get tired of finding ways to describe "Frank Wolff is BIG" and introducing English characters to the jaguar, I really won't...

Still debating Nicky's career. I'll probably stick to military since it works best with the story but. Mrgh. Thinking about it.

Thomas worked his way more or less to the edge of the crowd and had a look around. There were still an overwhelming number of people, making an overwhelming amount of noise, so it was a great surprise when, over the din, he heard his name.

“Thomas! Thomas, over here!”

Of course ‘over here’ was not a very clear set of directions, so it still took him a moment’s spinning in circles before he spotted the man waving too him. Even at a bit of a distance, he looked about the right height for Nicky and had the proper black hair, although the same could be said of much of the surrounding crowd, and after all, who else would know Thomas’s name in Bombay? Thomas set off, dodging people and the occasional cart of sorts.

As he drew closer, it became obvious the other man wasn’t alone. There was a woman directly next to him. At least Thomas thought it was a woman. It certainly looked like a woman, but it was wearing trousers. Thomas hadn’t heard anything about women’s dress reform going to that particular extreme in India, but then again it wasn’t the sort of thing he particularly kept tabs on. Next to her was a man, no question. He was easily Alfred’s height and looked like he could easily lift an elephant. Thomas sort of hoped that he was a servant of some sort who would be taking care of the luggage, because whatever the paraphernalia in this trunk was, it weighed a ton.

Then Thomas caught sight of the man on the other side of Nicky and he stopped cold. “You!” Standing there, in a clean, pressed linen suit, looking like he’d probably bathed that morning, was the fellow Thomas had run into back in London. Ignoring his cousin, Thomas stalked up to the stranger, glowering. “How did you get here before me?”

“The Orient Express,” the other man informed him in a horridly supercilious manner. “At least as far as Istanbul. Then-”

“You know what?” Thomas cut him off. “I don’t care. Do you have my trunk? ‘Cause I have yours, Dr Houghton.” He held up the trunk.

“Actually, that’s mine,” the woman informed him, stepping over and relieving him of the trunk. He half expected her to drop it because of the weight, but she handled it with no obvious difficulty. A farmer’s wife, or even a maid, Thomas wouldn’t have been surprised, but he didn’t expect anyone with the title of ‘doctor’ and a trunk full of…whatever that was…to be strong enough. Then again, he was looking at a woman in trousers who apparently was a doctor, so perhaps he shouldn’t be surprised. “And don’t worry, we do have your trunk.”

“Thank God.” After three weeks on a damn boat, Thomas really wanted a change of clothes.

Nicky cleared his throat and held out his hand. “Cousin Thomas! Good to see you again. Welcome to Bombay.”

Being sharply reminded of his manners, Thomas sighed and shook. “Yes, hello, Cousin Nicky. Good to see you. Sorry for my manners, it’s not been an overly pleasant journey.”

“I can imagine. It wasn’t overly pleasant when I came out here, and I wasn’t on a mail boat.” With a wry smile, the other man indicated his companions. “Allow me to make introductions. This is Dr Lily Houghton, botany professor at Cambridge. Her father was apparently old friends with my (Military superior, unless I choose a different career).”

“Doctor.”

A bit cautiously, Nicky continued, “You seem to be acquainted with her brother, McGregor Houghton.”

“We’ve met, yes,” Thomas acknowledged, narrowing his eyes.

“And I see your manners haven’t improved,” the other man sniffed. Thomas wanted to punch him.

“Yes, well, you take the mail boat back and see how you feel at the end.” While it was clear as always that the Houghtons outranked him, this was India. He was done kowtowing to strange toffs, unless maybe he got desperate for a job. Which, in retrospect, he basically was, so perhaps he shouldn’t punch this prat.

“And I’m Frank Wolff,” the towering giant informed him. “I’m Doctor Houghton’s fiancee.”

Reigning in his temper, Thomas smiled and nodded. “Pleased to meet you.” He’d have been more disappointed by the announcement, but either way, he didn’t have to carry that trunk anymore, so he didn’t care that much.

Something caused Frank to look down at his feet and he added, “Oh yes, and this is Proxima.”

Thomas looked down and immediately took three quick steps backwards. “You have a ti-no, spots. A leopard?”

“She’s a jaguar,” Frank informed him pleasantly.

That wasn’t much of an improvement to Thomas’s mind, because whatever she was, she was rather large and had claws and, he was quite certain, very sharp teeth. “I wasn’t aware they had jaguars in India.”

“Oh, no, she’s from Brazil.”

“Right. Brazil.” It was about that time that Thomas realised stepping away from the jaguar had put him in closer proximity to McGregor. He immediately shifted closer to the cat, figuring that if she belonged to Frank, he probably had her under control. Probably.

The Death Tool of Voldemort's Wars

So, I did say I'll make this post somewhere, so here it is.

When trying to make sense of Voldemort’s behavior in the books, I noticed that the two wars were actually very different. How they were waged, how many people died, and who was most targeted along with Voldemort's goals.

(Because I mentioned it, I'll just say Voldemort’s behavior in the book is really weird and somewhat contradictory, but I found a way to explain that. Consider this the second post on my way to analyze Voldemort after the Horcruxes one)

The Wizarding Population in the UK

(Edit: I have revisited this subject in a later post and concluded the distribution of ages is different than shown below. I still believe there are around 6,000 wizards in the UK though)

The first step to figuring out how bad the wars with Voldemort actually were is to know the size of the wizarding population in the UK. Numbers of deceased don't mean much without being able to calculate percentages.

If there are 40 students a year at Hogwarts in 1990s → 400 wizards and witches between ages 10-19

Account for fewer births during and right after the war with Grindelwald in the 1930s-1940s, and the war with Voldemort in the 1970s

Account for longer life acceptancy (Average of 130)

And we get an estimate of something like this:

With wizards being around 0.01% of the muggle population in any country.

The population in Britian in 1991 was 57,359,454, making the wizarding population 57,359*0.01% =~ 5,700

The population in Ireland in 1991 was 5.1 M, making the Irish wizarding population about 510.

So as a rough estimate, we'll say there were ~6,200 wizards and witches in the UK and Ireland together in 1991

Probably less though considering JKR killed most of Harry's grandparents' generation with Dragon Pox....

By the same logic above in the 1970s the Wizarding population in Britain and Ireland was ~5,600 + ~300 = ~5,900 wizards and witches.

So, now we have the estimated size of the population and we can gage how much damage these wars actually caused.

So, I may have compiled a list of all war casualties from both wars. I will not place the full details here (like the exact year each died), but I'll mention sides, who they were killed by, and any other information relevant to understanding the war's influence on wizarding society, and what we can learn from it about Voldemort's intentions.

This lands us at 45 casualties (including the Longbottoms) for the first Wizarding War. Now, let's look more closely at the numbers.

Not counting the muggles and creatures other than wizards lands us at 24

24/5,900 =~ 0.40% of the wizarding population was killed in the first war.

And did you notice anything interesting about the names on the list? There is only 1 muggleborn and 1 muggle family, whose death wasn't even on Voldemort's orders. What does it tell us about the war?

Well, first off, Dumbledore's idea of morality and not using dark magic and lethal curses kind of sucks. This is hardly a war, it's a massacre. 19 Order members and their families die compared to 3 Death Eaters, one of which was killed by Voldemort's creations. Moody and Mr. Weasley aren't kidding when they say the first war was rough in the fifth book. It really was, but only for their side.

The innocent casualties of people not belonging to any side in this war stand at 19 (including the 13 muggles killed by Pettigrew), and 6 (not including Pettigrew).

It's just wild how Peter Pettigrew has the most kills in this war, more than Voldemort. And it tells you a lot about Voldemort's priorities.

His priorities clearly aren't to kill all muggleborns, we can see that much. So what are his priorities? What is he actually waging a war for if it's not to kill all muggleborns like all the characters tell us?

Well, I will post a full rundown of the timeline of the first war at some point, but for now, what we know is that Voldemort is targeting the Order of the Phoenix, who opposed him. And he is in general causing chaos for the Ministry of Magic.

We know that by 1981, Voldemort practically won, with the ministry having more spies of his than any other group. The ministry was made up of Death Eaters. But we don't know of any rules he passed in this time, or moves to legalize dark magic or outlaw muggleborns — nothing like that happened.

What did happen, was that Voldemort made a cave filled with Inferi and experimented with potions (he invented the potion of despair in the cave).

It seems, more than anything, the war was there to distract the ministry or weaken it, and less about accomplishing a specific political goal. And if he was after a specific political goal, then it isn't blood purity as he isn't rounding up muggleborns like in the second war.

The low death count overall (especially when compared to the second war) is because Voldemort is there. Voldemort does not approve of unnecessary death, even muggle one:

“Nice costume, mister!” He saw the small boy’s smile falter as he ran near enough to see beneath the hood of the cloak, saw the fear cloud his painted face. Then the child turned and ran away. . . . Beneath the robe he fingered the hand of his wand. . . One simple movement and the child would never reach his mother. . . but unnecessary, quite unnecessary. . . .

(Deathly Hollows, page 295)

Voldemort himself does not like unnecessary death. He considers it and killing in rage below him at the end of the First Wizarding War. He doesn't do it himself and doesn't let his followers kill unnecessarily up until the night he kills the Potters.

What exactly Voldemort was trying to accomplish is a question I've pondered and have a few more posts about. But understanding he wasn't really after the death of all muggleborns and neither was he after control of Magical Britain, which is made very clear by the second war, is the first step to understanding him.

What we see here is that this second war was much deadlier. The Battle of Hogwarts alone had more casualties than the entirety of the First War. Even if I'm generous and add 20 more dead to my estimate of the First War, it doesn't come anywhere close to the death tool of the Second War.

Now, I ask myself, why?

The Second War was much shorter, officially ongoing between May of 1996 and May of 1998 (2 years), with the First War officially waging from 1975 to October of 1981 (6 years). What was so different between the wars that caused this kind of escalation in the second one this quickly?

We see the Second War unfold, we watch how quickly the Ministry of Magic falls and the Death Eaters take over. They quickly make laws such as the Muggleborn Registry — things that didn't happen in the first war.

“Attendance is now compulsory for every young witch and wizard,” he replied. “That was announced yesterday. It’s a change, because it was never obligatory before. Of course, nearly every witch and wizard in Britain has been educated at Hogwarts, but their parents had the right to teach them at home or send them abroad if they preferred..."

(Deathly Hollows, page 182)

Lupin is talking about the Muggleborn Registry and compulsory attendance to Hogwarts — completely new things, never seen before in Britain. They weren't around the first go-around even if Voldemort had the same amount of control over the ministry (it being made up of his followers even in the 1970s). So, what changed? What's the difference?

I pondered this question, and I realized what the main difference is — Voldemort. He is different. His priorities are different.

In the second war, Voldemort doesn't show any care for the ministry, government, or unnecessary death the way he did in the First War. In the First War he limited his Death Eaters, focusing them on targeting only Order members, but in the Second War, not only did he let them loose, but he let himself loose as well.

And I'll prove just how unconcerned he is with Britain and the war during Deathly Hollows and Half-Blood Prince.

In Half-Blood Prince, when the Death Eaters break into Hogwarts to kill Dumbledore, arguably their biggest achievement in the war thus far, and where is their leader? Off, somewhere. Researching wands so he could kill Harry Potter.

And where is Lord Voldemort, leader of the Death Eaters when his followers take over the ministry and start passing the aforementioned rules? He's in Germany, tracking down the Elder Wand.

“That’s—that’s pretty, Dolores,” she said, pointing at the pendant gleaming in the ruffled folds of Umbridge’s blouse. “What?” snapped Umbridge, glancing down. “Oh yes—an old family heirloom,” she said, patting the locket lying on her large bosom. “The S stands for Selwyn. . . . I am related to the Selwyns. . . . Indeed, there are few pure blood families to whom I am not related. . . . A pity,”

(Deathly Hollows, page 225)

Voldemort is so unaware and un-present in Britain during the time he supposedly rules it, that Dolores Umbridge can strut around the ministry with the locket that is his Horcrux and holds a piece of his soul and is his Slytherin family heirloom and claim it to belong to the Selwyn family and to be hers. And she wasn't tortured horribly to death.

Yeah, Voldemort never stepped foot in the Ministry throughout Deathly Hollows. At least, not until he retrieved the elder Wand and was convinced he could kill Harry.

In the First War, Voldemort had intentions, unrelated to blood purity as they were, but intentions nonetheless. He was actually leading and had goals for the war. In the Second War, it looks like he gave up. Like he decided killing Harry Potter is the only important thing and he isn't even bothering with anything else and lets his Death Eaters do as they please.

Conclusions:

Voldemort didn't really plan to win the Second War, he didn't really care what happened to the Ministry, as long as he could kill Harry Potter whom he is quite obsessed with. Like, he's really weird about Harry Potter, and maybe I'll talk about it more in-depth, but he's obsessed with being the one to kill Harry with a wand of his own, to the point of ignoring literally everything else.

If you are going to fight an opponent that is trying to kill you, you should probably be just as willing to be lethal in turn or you'd end up massacred like the Order of the Phoenix from the 1970s....

wow it’s almost as if this WW1-era gay man was living in a world were homosexuality was literally illegal, and had gone through the trauma of almost being disowned and outcasted by his family...

of course, he’s not gonna explicitly call himself gay! he’s been raised to believe that who he loved was a bad thing and he knows what reactions he may get because he’s already experienced those bad reactions.

it’s very clear what mcgregor is saying in the scene even without having to say “gay.” it’s clear he’s testing the waters, he doesn’t know how frank is going to react—but he trusts him enough to try.

so stop complaining about this, how else are we suppose to continue this GOOD representation from disney when all they see from us is how much we hate it!!!

1. Siblings from London go on a quest to find an ancient treasure that hasn’t been seen in years.

Sisters are overly knowledgeable and different from women of their time period.

Brothers are more on the high society side and aren’t as adventurous as their sibling, but will go with them to keep and eye on them.

2. Tough American guy is hired to guide them to find the treasure.

3. Tough guy and British girl are constant flirts because they are constantly surprised by the others’ behavior.

4. Dead guy comes back to life with his curses bringing about chaos with him.

Looking Good in Red

MacGregor doesn’t know why he volunteered but he did and now he is here in one of London’s most elegant Tailors searching for a wardrobe for Frank, the 400 and something-year-old skipper who hadn’t left the jungle for centuries. Lily was off doing whatever Lily wanted to do, most likely searching for a new adventure that the trio could embark on. For now though MacGregor’s only adventure would be to get through these next hours staring at a very beautiful man. 

MacGregor has dated before of course. He’s been with a few women and once he realized he wasn’t into them he had slowly moved on to the other gender, men. Being gay during this time was an awful situation and he could be ostracized from society so secretly he has dated a few men but it was never anything too special. A quick month or 2 month-long hidden relationships here or there. So it wasn’t like MacGregor didn’t have experience in the dating pool, it just was the fact that he hadn’t really “dated” anyone. Not really anyway. Not the way he’s heard of from his evening books or from his annoying but happy neighbors. Frank though felt different. Sure Frank and MacGregor weren’t even together but… well… MacGregor hopes they can be one day. He fully respects his sister and would never try anything while Lily and Frank were together but maybe, just maybe they would split up? God, MacGregor hates thinking this way. He adores how Frank treats her and thinks that the skipper is a perfect match for his headstrong sister. He just also adored Frank.

It is apparent though that MacGregor has no chance with the other man and so while they are both here today fitting into nice dashing suits, he has decided he will try his best to ignore Frank’s gorgeous muscles. That may be hard though since Frank keeps walking out of the fitting room half-naked complaining that most of the things in there didn’t fit him. Every time the taller man would walk out his upper body would be completely exposed, no jackets, no vest, no shirt. Just pure muscle. So MacGregor’s little plan isn’t going to plan whatsoever. 

“It’s just not fitting right! The shirt is too small, I can barely get my arms through the tiny holes and when I do I can barely button it. Is every man small here in London?” Frank comes once again out of the small fitting room with the shirt in his hand. He seems somewhat upset by the situation but mostly amused. “I swear MacGregor I didn’t think your face could get redder but I am mistaken.” He smiles at the smaller man, causing him to blush more. “See! It keeps reddening.”

MacGregor, now frustrated from Frank’s complaining and the heat in this room, walks over to Frank and grabs the shirt from his hand. “Well if you weren’t so damn big they would fit and yes Frank, my face reddens often. Glad you noticed now. Now please just find a shirt that fits and make it work so we can finally leave this god-awful place. I’m sweating buckets from this heat.” The smaller man walks around, searching for another shirt. His eyes land on the fairly huge red one. Not quite what MacGregor would wear but Frank isn’t him and a bold color might actually work for the giant. Grabbing the shirt, he heads back over to Frank and nearly shoves the shirt into his chest. “Here! Try this.” He leaves Frank who stands there and rolls his eyes before making his way back into the dressing room. MacGregor’s frustration slowly dissolves as he finds a pleasantly looking red tie. Maybe red could be his color? MacGregor never quite liked it on himself since he didn’t want the attention but after their near-death experience in the Amazon Jungle, MacGregor’s confidence had increased. Frank couldn’t be the only one who could pull of red. So MacGregor grabs the tie and turns to one of the huge mirrors in the waiting area.

“Hey!” whispered a voice next to MacGregor. Startled he turns around to see where the noise had come from. Frank’s head pops out of the room and he gestures for him to get closer. “I need some help.” Frank’s head disappears and MacGregor’s frustration comes back. 

“Oh, Frank I swear it is so infuriating to take you-AHH!” The smaller man was in the middle of his venting when Frank’s hand reaches out to him and grabs him by the almost done red tie around MacGregor’s neck. He is pulled into the small fitting room and is immediately pushed against the wall. “Frank what-”, MacGregor tries to ask but gets cut off by Frank shushing him. 

“I need your help, I don’t know what I am doing wrong.” Frank backs up a bit from the smaller man, allowing him to examine the problem. Frank had somehow screwed up the order of his buttons. How this man lived life for centuries, MacGregor will never understand. 

“You buffoon, you simply need to unbutton it and line them up correctly.” MacGregor begins to unbutton Frank’s shirt starting at the top. He is so busy that he didn’t realize just how close they actually are to one another. As MacGregor gets to the middle of Frank’s chest, he realizes and his eyes look up at the taller man who is looking back down at him. “Umm… see… its very simple.” MacGregor’s eyes go back down to the shirt and his hands work on the buttons the rest of the way. He works slowly, admiring as he reaches the bottom. Once the last button is undone his eyes snap back up again, staring right into Frank’s. Usually, the taller man’s face was expressionless unless there was some kind of smile but at the moment Frank’s eyes were filled with something MacGregor’s only seen during those secret relationships, desire. “Well, there you go. If you’d like I could help you with the rest but honestly I-”, MacGregor is cut off as Frank tugs on the red tie, pulling him forward. 

They both sit there silently, MacGregor feeling both scared and excited. “You look good in red. I noticed the tie earlier and had to get you in here so I could have a better, more private look.” Frank pulls the tie harder, causing a noise to come from MacGregor. His other hand raises above MacGregor’s head against the wall. “You also smell amazing. Like sweet vanilla. I’m not sure how but you should try to smell like this all the time.” Frank’s lips hover over MacGregor’s ear, sending chills down the smaller man’s spine.

“I… I try my best.  You also look very… very good in red. Very charming.” MacGregor struggles the last part out as Frank’s grip gets tighter. “Frank I don’t-”

“I already talked to Lily. She knows.” Frank hums. He nips the smaller man’s ear and receives a small moan.

“Oh my… umm… she knows what? Exactly?” MacGregor’s confusion fades as Frank begins to lick his ear.

“That you could also be world enough for me.” Frank backs up, causing MacGregor to whimper from the loss but Frank moves onto the other side, this time licking and nipping the smaller man’s neck. “Lily is everything to me. But so are you.”

“Oh, Frank… that sounds wonderful. I would love that deeply.” MacGregor exposes more of his neck to Frank, letting him explore even further. “Yes, I would love to be your everything.”

Frank bites down hard, MacGregor groaning from the pain grabs onto the taller man’s broad shoulders. Frank licks the spot and pulls away to a very dizzy-looking MacGregor. “This probably isn’t the best place to say something like that bu-”

This time Frank is cut off by MacGregor leaning forward and meeting his lips. MacGregor relaxes next to Frank, enjoying his strangely soft lips. “Any place would have worked for me. Now shut up and just kiss me.”

Frank’s eyes light up with joy and he smiles, leaning in to give MacGregor what he wants.

OKAY SO I JUST FOUND OUT THAT WE’RE GETTING A JUNGLE CRUISE SEQUEL AND IF FOR SOME FUCKING REASON THEY DECIDE TO CUT OUT OR LESSEN MACGREGOR’S SCREEN TIME I WILL RIOT LIKE LILY AND MACGREGOR CARRIED THAT MOVIE
