Dice containers and organizers

Speaking of dice, everyone knows the classic dice bag. I suspect that more gamers have used Crown Royal bags to store dice than have actually tasted Crown Royal.

I like to use other things than bags for dice storage, especially if I have a bunch I really want to organize. One handy solution is a fishing tackle box. You can find all different sizes and styles, and often at discount places like Ollie's or even thrift stores. There are all kinds of storage devices that can be utilized not only for dice organization but for your other favorite little items, like your good luck charms and miniature tape measure and what have you.

Art storage boxes and pencil cases can be pretty cool too. I got a new set of dice and organized them in this, an "ArtBin Quickflip," which I purchased at either a discount outlet or a thrift store, as above.

There is a center piece separating the two sides, and one has more room than the other.

I like to have at least 5 sets of dice because I hate re-rolling them! This container keeps them well-organized. So, I have my main dice set - whatever I'm using at the moment. These are my new ones, so obviously I'm favoring them, though usually this time of year I'm using orange and black sets!

Other side is thinner and less... manueverable, but works well nonetheless. If you get confused about how you're opening the case, you can make all the dice on one side fall out! It's difficult to do, but I'm a ditz...

Some games ask for "wild dice." Other times, I want a distinguishing die - say I'm rolling an attack cycle such as claw/claw/bite, and I want one of the attack dice to be a different color to account for the bite. So I put one extra set of dice here, again whatever I feel like. The blood-spattered ones are fun, but unbalanced! Lots of games use d6s exclusively, or call for sometimes, if not often, rolling handfuls of them. So I put some extras here, choosing these old Warhammer Winds of Magic dice because they're cool, and two Illuminati! dice from the Steve Jackson card game for the same reason!

I also include a scatter and misfire die, as they can be used for lots of things. Check out the website for some rules for them! I also keep a d30, which can be used to roll days of the month, as well as supplements like the d30 Sandbox Companion and the d30 DM's Companion, both of which, incidentally, I cannot recommend enough. A d24, good for, among other things, rolling an hour of the day, such as to determine when a random encounter takes place. A d16, which can be used to give characters wildly varying ability scores by rolling a d16+2 and avoiding the bell curve. A d7, which can generate days of the week, and a d3, which I just like because I enjoy having a die with 1-3 printed instead of dividing a d6 by 2. It's not because it's difficult, I just like using it.

It's finally time!!!

Xmas has finally come and gone, and the time is here to FINALLY share my giant project with you all.

BEHOLD

THE FRUITS OF 200h OF LABOR

FULLY CUSTOM DICE BOXES!!!

Every single box was made completely from scratch, from flat sheets of balsa to the fully assembled beauties you see.

Each box was a gift and is hand bound in brown pleather to resemble a tome with custom covers based on the interests of my friends.

The boxes open from the center with two hinges, and both the right and left halves are equally deep so the boxes lay flat on a surface when opened. The interiors are lined with felt and have one large tray on the interior left hand side to roll the dice, and have six partitioned cubbies on the right hand side to store your dice in.

Since the boxes are equally deep on both halves, the dice would fall out if not protected, so the right hand side of the boxes each have a unique, inset wooden divider door that pressure fits on top of the dice cubbies, keeping them firmly shut when travelling or when the boxes are not in use. And, since the rolling tray is hollow, it can be used to store pens and paper or dice towers as well!

Most of the partition doors are secured to the inside of the box with a hinge made out of a folded over ribbon that is glued into a carved out hollow on the inside left edge of the doors. They also have magnets installed along the inside right edge that connect with small studs inside the dice trays to confirm they stay firmly shut. One of the doors has different fabric hinges, but those fell apart a bit quickly so I had to find a more secure way to attach them.

I'm immensely proud of how all these turned out. They came out almost exactly how I imagined them. I've learned so much while working on them, both about my own capabilities and tenacity but also just on the general construction of the boxes. The next one I make will be so much easier, and will probably be even better!

My only regret is that I gave all of them away- and didn't make one for myself!!

1) The Tyranid Box

This box was made for one of my oldest friends. He's got a huge warhammer 40k army full of tyranids, so I themed his box to match his army! His was overall the easiest to create, because the vision was very clear to me from the start.

2) The Ork Box

This box was made for another close friend, who is my fellow DM for our shared TTRPG group. He recently was inspired by my Tyranid friend to start a warhammer army, and since he didn't really have a paint scheme figured out for his army I winged it a little. This was the 2nd most challenging design, as the Orks by nature are very crude and don't really care much for beauty. How do you show their chaotic nature while creating something beautiful? But I think it worked out well!

3) The Tarot Box

This box also came together quite nicely, and was gifted to a friend I reconnected with when I moved to my new city. He usually plays casters and elves in DnD, so I wanted the book to feel like an oracle/high fantasy/tarot inspired fancy spell-caster's tome, while maintaining his playful nature by making the interior Portal themed. The cover for this box took me by FAR the longest, as the hand stitching was very complex.

4) The Music Box

This one was another clear yet challenging design. This is one for my DnD crew, and I knew he liked audio engineering and music, so the cover was clear cut. The interior door was also an easy one, but when it was done I felt it was much too plain... when I shared my predicament with a coworker, she suggested that since he played a bard, I should add some arcane symbols on the door! It was just what was needed to tie this box together, and I'm really happy with the end result!

5) The Druid Box

This one was probably the most difficult to design, mostly because this was designed based on the character this DnD friend was playing at the time (and is playing still). The character is an elf druid who is high all the time and let me tell you the urge to make the cut out on the inside a marijuana leaf was astronomical. But I wanted the box to be a bit more versatile so I went with some puppy paw prints instead, since he has a dog!

6) The Faerie Box

While all the boxes were mostly assembled at the same time, any box that I needed to do some experimentation on I did it with this box. This one was given to a friend I made in my new city. I'm really happy with this one, and they were happy to receive it as well!

That was my huge project! I'm glad I came across that dice box video by Kobold's Craft since it provided me with the method to the madness.

I poured my heart and soul (and blood and tears and. lots of blood. i cut myself often) into these books and everyone was super happy with them.

I learned so much and I can't wait to make some more- with all the knowledge that I gained from these!

The time breakdown is roughly as follows: - 60h to cut, glue, sand, stain and assemble the boxes - 50h to hand sew the embroidery on all the boxes - 20h to add the felt interiors - 20h to paint all the boxes - 30h to design, carve, sand, stain, paint, cure and assemble the cubby doors - 20h of research, design, purchasing and various other things I needed to do lol

I'm thinking of making a tutorial video on how to make these... 🤔

Buy some beeswax candles from a household of disabled queer crafters!

Hey everyone, there are some changes happening with the Etsy shop I run with my husband @kryptidkhaos!

For one, we've rebranded! When I first opened the shop, I was handling everything on my own, but Aiden's taken over a significant amount of the labor while I work on all the other projects I have going at any given time. The shop's original name, "Ren's Curio Shop," didn't quite fit now that it's not just mine anymore, hence...Candles and Cantrips!

The candle part should be obvious from the photos at the top of this post, but why "cantrips"? Because I'm starting to make dice and other tabletop gaming related crafts again! Over the next few weeks I'll be working to add new listings for dice, dice accessories such as bags, trays, and storage boxes, and a few more fun things you'll hear about once I make more progress.

Until that's all ready to list, we still have a wonderful selection of unscented, all-natural beeswax candles--including three brand-new listings for votives and mini tapers.

The prices on a couple of our listings have gone up slightly, adjusted to accommodate higher beeswax prices and cost of living in the second half of 2024. We haven't raised them too terribly much, though, so if you're in the market for beeswax candles, I hope you'll check out our shop! Each candle is made by a couple of disabled queers in our crappy little apartment kitchen, and each purchase supports our little queer family as we try to survive the capitalist hellscape we must exist in.

So here's what I think it means: Ramb was most likely talking about Noelle, right? She'd be on the right with the laptop, maybe playing Cat Petters, while Kris was on the left, maybe using the cards and dice to learn parlor tricks (if web searches wouldn't pull up results for teaching humans magic, they might've still been interested in learning sleight-of-hand).

And I think that explains what happened to Spamton.

Tenna doesn't recognize him anymore because they knew each other back when Spamton was a [[BIG SHOT]] in a matching red suit. He might've even had his own commercials on Tenna's screen, but this was also when he resided in Queen's mansion alongside Swatch. (And if this was when the King and Queen met, then it's also when Spamton would've met Jevil.)

Meaning... Spamton's calls with his mysterious benefactor could've been through the landline. Especially if they were still on dial-up internet back then. They stopped because Noelle stopped coming over with the laptop.

And as for Tenna... the dates 12/25 (Christmas Day) and 2/13 (Valentine's Eve) prominently show up, and Kris' implied aversion to watching TV might've been because it was always shoving the tragedy in their face. But it's still unclear whether Tenna knows Dess was never found, or if he was trying to focus on better times, or if he really was trying to push Kris' buttons; but he should at least know she's gone. Dess was the mayor's daughter, after all. If she went missing, it would've been all over the news.

And that could've been why Asgore was removed from the force. He wouldn't let it go, so Carol made him. And if Chapter 4 says anything, he's still investigating in secret– and suspicious of her. And maybe she's just a coldhearted ass who got tired of her public image revolving around an unsolved case instead of her success as town mayor. But she's definitely sus as fuck.

Back to Ramb, though: I think him petrifying establishes what generally makes a Darkner "belong." Darkners are animated objects, and maybe he was simply an overdue loan like the tutorial for drawing dragons, but Ramb was library property regardless. That one Zapper might've been for Asgore' TV all along, since he seems to have the same kind at the flower shop, and his remote could've been borrowed or mixed up.

Meanwhile, the Pippins were safe because they were... that property's property. The Rudinns, according to one, were from Kris' deck, explaining why Lancer and Rouxls were unaffected.

What it doesn't explain is Chapter 4 (which so far is likely more to do with the two Dark Worlds being treated as flipsides) or why the classroom Darkners don't seem to recognize Kris, but maybe the latter's for gender reasons. If Ralsei is an outdated sona, then Kris at least used to present as a boy like the brother they wished to be more like, and the Card Kingdom simply wasn't there to witness Kris' transition. Or maybe those Darkners forgot the Lightners just like the Lightners forgot them, but... speaking of Dark Worlds...

...belonging. The storage closet is an ideal place for a Dark Fountain because anything could belong in a place like public storage.

And maybe that's why Ralsei was put there in the first place. Safekeeping.

Darkners in Castle Town are safe from the Player. We can harm Darkners and even Lightners in other worlds, but not this one. We're not given the option. That's how Ralsei's been kept safe all this time. Chapters 3&4 give us opportunities to hurt his feelings, which Kris will resist, but he can't be damaged or killed through Kris.

Maybe not just Ralsei either. Kris' side of the room, or at least the side they sleep on, is empty... and noticably desaturated like the door to Dess' room... and their locker is also empty. The locker could be due to their implied absence, but it could also be because they knew a Player would come (or come back) and they didn't want to give us access to anything of theirs that they wanted left untouched.

It's been speculated since Chapter 1, I've been coming back to the possibility that this isn't Kris' first time being under a Player's control. We don't know how we seized Kris' body or why, or if we're the first; even if we are, though, there's a chance Kris knew to expect us. And so they prepared accordingly while they still had bodily autonomy.

Might post another ramble after I finish my Chapter 3&4 replay, now that I have save files with Dealmaker, Jevilstail and the original Starwalker again.
