Would you say having a likable protagonist is important to writing a good book? Does the main character need to be a good person, or just entertaining?

Furthermore, does the protagonist even need to be interesting at all? Opinions on this topic differ throughout time; Many older novels use protagonists as a vessel through which to tell the story, rather than as catalysts or characters in their own right.

Examples include Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot novels; Hastings is not important to the plot, he exists to convey what happens in the story. Using Poirot himself as a protagonist would defeat the point of a detective novel, so the duty falls to his assistant.

Which stories would you say benefit from having an important, likable, or interesting protagonist, and which suffer for it?

So Nik was with Henry for the UW premier. There is a lot of gossip about him potentially being a witness to everything while it was taking place during the press tour. Henry appears solo and then turns up with NV and (as it turns out) a fake pregnancy belly announcement?! Janecuppa admits there is a timeline manipulation with all that, but Nik seems to have been around for the sake of Henry's protection? Why is Henry on need of protection or witness? Is there something we don't know about yet going on behind the scenes? If we are going off of the gossip from Janecuppa's page, with Natalie setting him up through her contract, it kind of make sense that Nik was around as a testiment to everything?! And tbh Henry seem to have only exclaimed being excited about pregnancy after the fact to E news. It's an odd thing, to show up solo, then turn around pull a whole pregnancy announcement?! It's like he was actually trying to not be involved with her at that point during his press tour. Also there is a video leaked around the time of the announcement, that shows Henry walking past NV and ignoring her like a nobody on the sidelines, as he walked with his body guard. He didn't bother holding her hand or anything and you could visibly see it in her face that she was in disbelief that he treated her that way in front of fans.

I wish I could link the video. It was very popular at the time the initial stunt took place.

I wish I could see the video you're talking about. That sounds like he was being indifferent towards her. Like she is just another staffing member.

There’s a reddit thread rn abt how old Dick should be when he becomes Robin and Nightwing and it’s taking all my willpower not to comment “let that third grader kick a henchman in the nuts!” The AMOUNT of people insisting he’s gotta be 12+ when he becomes Robin DISGUSTING it’s horrible I hate it. You want him to be a TEENAGER when he starts being Robin? I’m gonna gag. He should be a feral terrifying wraith of a child who puts the fear of God in these goons making poor life choices, bc why is a small child roundhouse kicking them in the mouth and knocking out a tooth and then cackling about it from the rafters? “iT’s mORe reALisTic!!1!” It’s a COMIC it’s a cartoon when the fuck was BATMAN AND ROBIN supposed to be realistic??All the more reason to hate Reddit tbh

Riot storied on her insta about a “troll” that “all that forehead is a snipers dream”. So basically, we’re the violent ones but she insinuates shooting someone in the head? Ok then…

Riot SERIOUSLY just said someone deserved to be shot dead for gossip!!! But god forbid anyone says a word or gossip about the speculation/health of an unknown child? You have got to be kidding me that they think they are good people. That is foul. Disgusting and disgraceful!

When writing, would you say you’re a very visual person? Do you have a clear idea in your head of what your characters look like, or do you only have a few bare details to work off of?

If you do have an idea in your head, how clear is it? In addition, what does this apply to? Do you have detailed descriptions written about their hair, eyes, nose, and mouth, but very little about their clothes, or vica versa? Why do you think this is?

How does this way of thinking about and writing descriptions influence your writing as a whole? Would you say that descriptions are an important part of your writing style?

There is so much richness to Julian Bashir’s character and he adds so much to the fabric of DS9 as a show, and it’s unfortunate to me that so many summations of his character - I’m thinking especially of relatively mainstream critical venues, though sometimes in fandom as well - downplay or ignore his thematic significance, and contextualize his character only through either the homoerotic potential of his dynamic with Garak or the development of his friendship with Miles O’Brien.

It’s odd to me as well, because so many fans and critics praise DS9 for its willingness to be critical of the Federation and of Starfleet, and yet I see relatively little acknowledgment of how much of that criticism is accomplished through the character of Bashir (alongside, of course, Sisko). His infamous “frontier medicine” line is the very first example - it completely upends the ethos on which Star Trek rests, and it’s placed in his mouth. That matters, given that that he is set up as a character who believes in the utopia in which he grew up, and whose altruism is well-intentioned but shown to be naïve. That’s why he’s paired with Sisko in Past Tense, in which he’s shocked by the injustices of the past; it’s why we have episodes like The Quickening, which demonstrates without a doubt that his heroic impulses are good and worthwhile, but need to be tempered by humility.

And two of the arcs that are the most sharply critical of the Federation - namely, the augment thread and the Section 31 subplot - both centre Bashir. That’s not an accident. Those arcs raise all manner of questions related to institutional corruption and self-protection, the narrow standards of normalcy in Federation society, disposability and unpersonhood, the degree to which moral standards can be stretched for the greater good (similar questions to those raised by In the Pale Moonlight), etc.

Broadly speaking, Bashir’s arc centres on the awakening of innocence to experience, and about the process of becoming disillusioned with one’s ideals, but, simultaneously, the catalysts of that process only serving to emphasize the continued importance of those ideals. (Not to mention the fine line between heroism and self-aggrandizement and status-seeking). The dynamics with Garak and O’Brien are enjoyable, and sometimes thematically relevant along some of these lines, but he has so much going on in his own right, and that deserves to be recognized.
