as much as I love history and Chicago history especially, I do sometimes forget how recent everything here is. I was at the Hull House Museum with a friend of mine the other day, and we had a wonderful time listening to the curator talk about the birth of social work, the women who drove it forward, and the ghost stories that haunt their stomping grounds despite no one really dying there.

As we were walking around after the tour, my friend pointed out that Jane Addams' dress (the one on display in that room, black and small and otherwise unremarkable) had an uneven hem. "Oh, good eye!" the curator, who was walking alongside us, exclaimed. "Addams' tuberculosis left her with some spinal curvature, even after corrective surgery. She had most of her dresses altered to ensure the hem would be straight when she wore them---but on a standard dress form, the hem looks uneven."

"I always forget that having a tailor or dressmaker was considered typical back then," I said.

"No, by that point it was much more common to buy a dress from Sears and have it altered," the curator replied cheerfully. "That's what Addams did."

The whole exchange was maybe a few seconds, but it sticks with me even now. The idea that Jane Addams bought a dress from Sears---where I have also bought dresses, where my mother bought dresses---makes me feel insane. And yet, we're only talking about a hundred years ago or so. Is it so unreasonable that I, as a disaffected teen, was drifting through racks of mass-produced garments, just as Jane Addams did a century before? The exact location of the hands making those garments has changed of course; the workers' protections that Addams' contemporaries fought for have resulted in offshoring that work to less-guarded parts of the world. But it gives me a strange sort of fellow feeling to think about it, all these many decades later.

Thinking about Daring and Lizzie. Thinking about Lizzie breaking up with him because he would never feel at home in Wonderland, and she would always feel guilty for it. Thinking about her choosing her people over her prince, her responsibility over her happiness. Thinking about her telling him that he has his siblings in Ever After, but she has no one, and vice versa. Thinking about Daring pleading with her to not let him go and her telling him that it will be for the best, that one day he'll find someone who will make him happier than she ever could. It's for the best.

Thinking about her seeing him a year later, standing hand in hand with a brunette and smiling ear to ear. Thinking about how she'd turn away from them and smile, happy for them even as her heart ripped open. Thinking about how he found someone who would let him be their world when she couldn't. Thinking about how she'd whisper,

"I told you so."

they would be so doting ……… even before you join their relationship. i think the lines are very blurred because they’re always inviting you to have dinner with them, making small talk while you water plants in your backyard, asking about your life ……. you’re basically dating them before you realize it yourself.

and pls….. not the tears…………… they would baby you until you’re so embarrassed you forgot why you were even sad in the first place. i fear they’re the masters of back massages and pep talks dilfguru would be feeding you spoonfuls of soup while his husband coos and runs his big hands down your back :///// i can’t stand them . they’re too good at comforting you . tells you to come to them anytime you feel down or need some advice or need to be pampered ….. would also tell you that you don’t need to work, they can support you while you just work on your hobbies . personally i wouldn’t take the risk you’ll be playing into their caretaker complex too much

thank you everyone for complaining about essek.... I don't hate him but he's just so nothing to me and the way the fandom latched onto him (and the cast a little bit) was one of the reasons I never watched the end of c2. I understand his appeal as a character concept I guess but onscreen he was never that compelling to me and the stuff he did gets brushed off so hard in comparison to the critiques of every little thing the main characters (coughs in veth stan) do/did which is rly annoying both ways

same to me in ways yea, he's very nothing to me outside of when he's being like, horrific and lying. like thats a compelling scary villain to me, telling on himself via framing others, asking tmn to find something when he knows exactly who has it and how dangerous it is to get it. thats good characterisation i like that a lot. its sinister in a fun way and feels like it could have a rly good cathartic betrayal. but when he's a weepy little uwu sarcastic soft sad boy it does absolutely nothing for me. thats just not a character type i enjoy. i dont care abt gated neighbourhood rich boy tears. tmn are much more compelling and charming despite and bc of their flaws to me . i litrally love them . like cad and beau u are my one and only

since the release of the character playlists, and the rain road in the arc 1 finale my brain has been absolutely spinning about musicality in the wizard, the witch, and the wild one. and the relationship between music and the spirit realm, and then how that intersects with umora.

because since the beginning there has been this emphasis between the world of spirits and music. eursulon's theme, when we first meet him, before he crosses over, is this beautiful choral music—the first time we hear singing in the show. and then there is your honey is quiet, honey with a note of song. the first diegetic song we hear performed, is sung to honour the spirits.

(edit: eursulon’s breath!!! the thing that brings him back to himself, after it had been lost!!!!)

so i have the rain road on repeat and i'm re-listening to fireside chats and in the one for the first episode brennan describes the world of spirit by saying "it is the world beyond, and between, and through, and past the world" and it reminded me of the scoring. we hear the stories of umora, but beyond, between, through, and past the world; surrounding it, but separate from it is the score. (making me feel like us, the audience, is sitting and existing in the spirit realm. and if it is supernal, if it is what is beyond and between and through and past the world— aren't we?)

but that called to mind eursulon's character playlist, and how it, especially in it's representations of eursulon's early journey, was so instrumental. and that led me to ponder the intersection of music and language. how young eursulon's theme was choral but not lyrical.

the structure of language is the domain of umora.

and how that intersects interestingly with what we have seen of the lingua arcana. suvi's rhythmic somatic components. reflexive indicative and null clef alluding to the structure of grammar and music theory.

and then how the rain road is choral and lyrical, together. the first breaking of that line between the score and the world. connecting, like ame does.

and that is why in the wizard the witch and the wild one ame is a meta narrative representation of musical theatre. in this essay i will—
