Hey! I really adore the way you draw textures, as they usually fit with the vanilla art style flawlessly, and wanted to ask for advice. I want to make addons/mods, and maybe a full texture pack someday, but my textures always end up looking kind of flat, lack depth, and look weird when next to vanilla stuff.
Thank you so much :3 as far as advice, I'm afraid I've been doing pixel art for ~15 years now so unfortunately a lot of it is just experience... I do have some tips though! but I am in no place to do a full tutorial at the moment.
Prerequisite: Use paint dot net. It's super beginner friendly, since it's based off of Paint, and it's what has been used for Minecraft textures since the very beginning.
First off, you want to have a block-out palette! For me, it's these 5 colours here:
Tumblr media
From here, you'll want to go darkest to lightest; use the darkest tone to outline, then fill in with the 4th tone. Eventually, you'll want to make it so that there are 2-3 outline tones, from darkest to lightest, in accordance to however you're shading. Anything overlapping with the main shape should not use the darkest two tones!
Then you'll want to hit the bright spots not with your mid-tone or your highlight, but with your second lightest tone! This way, you leave room to highlight And shade your highlights. You've effectively made 5 different palettes to use to shade different parts (1-2, 1-2-3, 2-3-4, 3-4-5, 4-5). Whenever you feel like you're ready, switch out this palette for something more in line with what you're doing- depending on what material you're going for, this can happen super early on or way late. Whenever I do something Metallic, I like to switch to a gold palette as soon as possible.
Another thing to keep in mind is minecraft's palette limitations! Generally speaking, try to keep textures to 5-9 colours, filling in between as needed. If you use more base colours, feel free to expand, but do not go over 15 if you can help it. A good rule of thumb for adding additional colours is that you should try to limit them to 3 tones.
When choosing a palette, there's no problem with going with any pre-existing item's colours! In fact, this can be super helpful even when you want to use your own colours, just as a reference.
When you do want to make your own palette, my advice is to choose a strong colour, any hue, saturation in the 60-80 range, value in the 70-90 range. To get strong shading in your palette, drop the value by ~5, increase the saturation by ~5, and shift the hue towards blue by ~5. Do this each time from your base colour. Go in the opposite direction to Increase the perceived brightness. Here, I started with the 5th tone.
Tumblr media
Obviously, you can tweak these to your liking; your outline colours should end up a lot darker than this generally speaking, and you might want to ramp all the way up to white for your highlights. You'll also generally want your outline colour to end up with like, max 30 Value & at Full Saturation, with your highlight colour at 100 Value & ~50 saturation if you aren't going for Full White. Lets see what that might look like after changing the most extreme values & then blending accordingly.
Tumblr media
At the end of the day, my biggest tips are 1) to look at references constantly in both minecraft's existing sprites and other people's sprites! Take what you like, improve on it where you think it could use improvements. & 2) always zoom out! Even if a texture is perfect, if you've been staring at it too long so up close, it's going to feel weird. Minecraft's most common GUI scale is 2x, so scale the image on your screen somewhere where each pixel is exactly 2x2 and you'll get a good feel for how it'll actually look in-game.
One last tip on a more advanced level: if you're using multiple different base colours, always shift to grayscale very often. Your tones should look indistinguishable in grayscale so that you know that the shapes themselves are strong enough to warrant the multiple colours. This is also very good for accessibility!

If you're a chaos-head, and also a fan of Cry of Fear... I am unsure of what exactly to tell you, but provide you with a custom hoodie where little Simon can brandish this hoodie against his will (if you are aware, then you are aware)
Here's a tutorial on how to put it into your game.
Keep in mind: you need to unlock all 5 endings of the game to unlock the custom hoodie option (being the very bad ending, 2 separate bad endings, the good ending, and the joke ending)
The hoodie provided is saved in .png for the sake of showcasing. Download this image and convert it to targa (.tga) and save it as 24-bit. (You can use any art program that allows you to save in .tga file (I prefer paint dot net)
Load up the game files in your steam directory (unless you downloaded it from another source, then I suggest you seek out the Cry of Fear folder as we speak), and search up models, costumes and put your targa file in the costumes folder, ensure you rename it to custom_hoodie. For the confused, it should look like this. steam>steamapps>common>cry_of_fear>cryoffear>models>costumes.
I will need to hold your hand for this, but if you are an owner of Steam, you will need to download Source SDK (and it's adjacent source variants) for the custom_hoodie to appear.
Start your game from the beginning, go to the secret room before proceeding, collect whatever you need for your little adventure and change your clothes. On the very bottom of the list should be a custom hoodie option, and it should look like this.
Tumblr media
Do disregard the highlighted button, it does that on it's own sometimes.
5. Have fun.

Art Tutorial (aliased brush, oil painting look)
I've been using Pikmin Echo as a springboard for myself to practice new art techniques!
I had a few people ask me how I draw backgrounds in paint dot net, so I quickly drew this image you see below!
Tumblr media
Now, there isn't one process I use, I mostly freehand it straight from the noggin to the paper. I barely use references, and I really should use them more often!!
But this should show an outline of generally what's going on in my mind when I'm doodling a doodle :)
Step 1: Choose sky color
I personally like to use either a light blue or a light orange!
This reference uses a light orange so I'll steal it.
Tumblr media
Step 2: block the main contrast out with a big brush
There is a foreground and a background to this scene, a clear light and dark.
It's much easier to work with a blocked out pattern! It's like the sketching equivalent in this technique.
Tumblr media
By the way, I'm using an aliased brush because I'm a pixelart nerd (so retro 🤓☝️) and also because it makes selecting blocks of color much less messy! But trust me, it will look soft in the end :)
Step 3: Look for blocks of common color
I see big patches of blue and orange when I squint my eyes, so I plot those in!
Look at how the light comes from the top right, it illuminates the trees on one side!
Tumblr media
Step 4: Look for hue variations in the lights
Natural colors are never going to be flat or homogeneous--theres variations everywhere!
Add in greenish, reddish, bluish and yellowish patches, and even if at first it's a little scary to stray from such bold colors, I promise, gray is essential to making a truly vivid image!
Tumblr media
Step 5: move on to the darks
The tree trunks in the left shade looked blue to me! So I toss in some blue splotches.
Don't worry if it looks messy. You can always clean up your messes later <3
Tumblr media
Step 6: Fine detail in the very back
Going just like a traditional painter, painting the back first is perfect because you will later paint over the back layers with the front ones, creating realistic layers of texture!
It is much easier to go back to front than the reverse.
Think about the shape design and the flow of all of the elements.
The mountains curl up and down in very specific ways, and the trees look like circles from very far away, with leafless outliers few and far between.
Tumblr media
Step 7: let's take a break from the canvas and do homework
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
learning how to simplify incredibly complicated shapes is crucial!
Trees, grass, rocks, everything in nature has very complicated structure, but you can simplify them very much!
With newfound respect for the complexity of nature, start noting down the elements of your scene in more detail.
You can move your reference around and crop it so that it's easier to perfectly replicate what you wish to draw....but....
Tumblr media
personally, I like to use the reference more for vibes and just ad lib the rest!
Tumblr media
Study the general shapes of your reference, and apply them in new, unique ways!
I hope this tutorial was helpful for you!
Please feel free to rb this post with any art you make with this! I'll be excited to see what you create :)
Thanks for reading!

How do you come up with your compositions? They are so cool I wanna know if you have any huge inspirations :-) your art is so lovely
Hiiiiiii! Awww thanks for the appreciation!
I'm actually working on a more comprehensive art tutorial rn (bc someone asked here earlier), that would include composition, but I'll do a shorter answer first for u bc you're asking sth. more specific ?( hope it's okey (❁´◡`❁))
(Oh and also I've seen ur req! don't worry, I'm doing that as well, it's just there's still some before yours( ´・・)ノ(._.`))
Um and when the long tutorial is out, feel free to check that out ~
On Composition:
Goal
For me the goal of my illustration r Storytelling n full on Emotional experience.
(It's something I've been trying to achieve but cannot guarantee I hit it all the time, sometimes bc of my habit I'll lost myself during the process and looking back find out I miss something important, so the following is the best theories I could provide. Most of improvement r still in daily practice(●'◡'●))
To paint with beautiful compostion, you'll first have a solid story in mind, it can be simplified into " who when where n what", writing them down on a note n stick it near by would help.
And as to emotional experience, is something I can't get hold of all the time... music might help I guess? I have headcanon playlists for every chatacter or ship I wanna paint, and extract emotions from them everyday.
But there's some practical methods too.
Methods
I've worked storyboard n director for 2 years in the past, even though I'm not proud of the projects I worked on, some knowledge might still be useful.
It's mostly 2 methods: Silhouette & Movement
Well for silhouettes there's already bunch of books discussing this, one of my favs is Framed Ink, I'm sure u can find a pdf somewhere on the net.
Tumblr media
(I find this photo on the internet bc mine is not around)
Basically it's that, think about the objects within your image, by using shadows n their original colors, you can split it into interesting shapes. This will visually elevate the overall feeling of composition.
Also, there's a cheat build in humem's understanding of an image.
Tumblr media
basically this, putting important object on the 1/3 points of an image is the fastest cheat.
Also, contrast your silhouette. If you're painting sth that has no background, try giving your silhouette a constrasted design.
Tumblr media
(like in this one, the right side is smooth but I'm putting lots of variation on the left.)
For movement, think about your image as a shot taken when your characters r doing sth.
They would each have a direction to move to, and that forms their movement. Your job here is to arrange them into logical or emotional lines.
If it's a series of work, u can plan out the movement toward the same direction.
Tumblr media
(the only time you're seeing their car facing left is when they stopped, I was trying to say that their trip kinda ends here)
Also for manga, comic n movie, make sure your important information is within safe area.
Tumblr media
(the area within dotted lines is the safe area, u want your character's expression to be mostly within it. if it's like extreme close-up, the certain area u want to emphasize should be within it.)
I have some examples for these two theories.
Tumblr media
First let's analyze this screenshot of one of Kurosawa's film, Seven Samurais.
Tumblr media
The story here is that these guys r about to fight, possibly some big conflict. There silhouette can be sumed up like this, within the orange line.
Tumblr media
We see this guy sticking out from this shape, implying he might be the head of this crowd.
Tumblr media
Movement wise, their spears n heads face the same direction, telling u that the enemy will come from that side. Even this is a still frame, the movement is implied perfectly.
Another sample from Synecdoche,NY by Charlie Kauffman
Tumblr media
This is a minimalist way of conveying emotion, u only see one main character here, and hardly any movement. Why is it so powerful?
Tumblr media
Our main character, Caden, is in the almost center of this shot. He has a clear n simple shape. You don't normally put your main object in the center, so we'd assume he's very important.
Tumblr media
Then there's this repeated notes in the background. When something is repeated a lot, it giver u an impression of pressure. Especially when he's surrounded by them, and they take more space within the frame than he does.
Tumblr media
Also, this is a down shot, the camera is pointing down and behind him. You'll feel your character being watched or at his lower point of life when u do that.
Inspirations:
Movies mostly, and traditional artists.
Back when I was in film school I watched a bunch of movies n that slowly became a habit, movies r very good sources for ideas.
Even if you're not having enough time, watching reviews n analysis would also help, (but I'd suggest u try to consume the films not listening to critics to get a unique experience.)
Some of my favourite directors are:
Kelly Reichardt (First Cow)
Apichatpong (Tropical Malady, Memoria);
Charlie Kaufman (Synecdoche NY, Adaptaion);
Satoshi Kon (Paprika, Perfect Blue);
Kurosawa Akira (Yume, Kagemusha );
Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz );
Kusturica (Black Cat White Cat, Underground 1995);
Carol Reed (The Third Man)
Errrm I hope it's helpful? (❁´◡`❁) The next tutorial is gonna be even longer.

Hi! You’ve probably already answered this somewhere, but would you mind stating what modeling software you use? I’ve been trying to find something that will replicate DS style graphics for a project I’m working on. Thanks and love your art!
Thanks for the support! I make all of my models in Blockbench (usually its generic mode) and texture using Paint dot Net! Blockbench in my experience is super super accessible, and I'd heavily recommend it to anyone wanting to make low-poly models. If you need any advice I'd love to help out, and I'd also recommend ArtsByKev on YouTube! He's made several very helpful tutorial videos.
Best of luck with your project!

Heads up if you were tempted by a tumblr domain. The faq had no info about domain renewal prices which is what you pay when your year is up.
Mines a dot net on domain.com and prices increase every year. It's currently $28 with taxes... originally bought for $12 renewed at $15 and gradually increasing over the past decade. I pay it because I haven't yet moved all important accounts off the [email protected] email I've been using as my main 'serious' contact for a while and don't want to end up in trouble.
Another heads up: domain related 25% off promo codes etc almost never apply to renewals. That's the one area where they expect you to have ties to your domain worth coughing up full price. There are plenty of places willing to sell you a cheap domain for the chance that you'll lock yourself into a brand identity or personal email and be willing to pay more for renewal.
Anyway I'm hosting doll sites still: you get 500mb (depends on the content), ftp and access to install databases. Special priority to unusual or obscure lists/archives, doll history and design philosophies, tutorials, especially specialist tutorials.
