Here are some painting tips, as promised. I hope they will help beginner artists!
Composition
Position of characters on the sheet
Choose the location of your character to be beneficial to the appearance of the art in general, you can accentuate the important places where the viewer should look first by using perspective and composition.
Tone sketch
Set the lights based on references, but adjust to your own, favourable lighting.
Contrasts come in many forms. Contrast in color (warm and cold), values (dark and light), shapes soft and hard, straight and curve, etc.
Less is better. Work on the details of the most important part of your work while cutting down everything else. If you do strong detail in one place, don't forget to add looser detail in another so the viewer's eye can rest. For example: If you are detailing a portrait, don't detail the background as much. Next to a place of high detail, there should be a place of low detail so that the picture does not look overloaded.
All in all, you can twist and break perspective, anatomy and shapes to convey your idea better. No rules are made of steel, they should support your imagination, not restrict it
Anatomy
Break down objects into simple shapes to arrange them in space.
Check references! plasticity comes first, then structure (muscles are important, but proportions and line of movement come first).
Take a photo of yourself, you will be able to understand how to perform your pose naturally. Color/light.
Light is part of the composition, put it in a way that highlights the important things. Air perspective
General rules of composition. From the general to the particular, first prepare the general scene, correctly place contrasts and accents, make everything important in contrast, and take the unimportant into an aerial perspective. (aerial perspective, or atmospheric perspective, refers to the technique of creating an illusion of depth by depicting distant objects as paler, less detailed, and usually bluer than near objects.)
When all the points are ready we can start working out the details.
When all the details are finished again it's back to the overall picture, looking at it from a distance. Check if the accents you wanted to draw attention to are working. They should have the highest contrast. Check if the contrast is not created by objects on the edges, where you don't want the viewer to pay attention. For example, if you are painting a portrait then the focus should be on the face and not on the details of the clothes or details in the background. (You can always convert the image to black and white and check the contrast)
Save the stages of your work to check against the initial idea and see what things have changed for better or worse!

A Fantasy Landscape
Tried the ‘snow tree and stars’ tutorial from James Julier. It gives off a bit of a fantasy vibe 😊
Have to admit, I got slightly distracted towards the end and the snow dunes aren’t exactly perfect, but that’s okay, it’s the journey not the destination 😊

How to Draw a Face!
For many, drawing a face can be very daunting and can seem very complicated. However, drawing a face can be a lot more simple than you'd think.
Here are a few simple tips to follow if you're just learning to draw a face. These are just some basics and as you get more confident you can change up features and alter proportions to your liking. Not everyone looks the same and facial features can vary greatly.
Start with a circle
This circle will help provide you with baseline info on proportioning the features of the face. From the circle you can extend two lines downward and connect them with a flat u shape.
Tumblr media
Add some Lines
These lines will help guide the facial features.
Tumblr media
Draw some eyes and ears
When drawing ears, sort of go in with the mindset of two C's. And for the eyes think of incomplete ovals.
Tumblr media
Finishing it off!
Just add some circles to the inside of the eyes. You also can add some details to the ears if you'd like. The eyebrows may take some trial and error but you've got it!
Tumblr media
Random details :D
Just go ahead and erase the horizontal lines and now you have a complete face! Congratulations!with step 10, I added some shading and hair. As well as a neck just to make it feel more complete.
Tumblr media
Next post I'll provide a few examples of alterations that can be done to change up your character and make them your own. Hope this helped. :D

Welcome to your new home
The Painted Drake isn't just a Discord Group, it's an RPG Art Community in teeth and rainbow flames.
What started as an innocent fantasy art server has spiraled gloriously out of control. Now it’s a living world, and you’re partially to blame. Your art doesn’t just get posted. It becomes canon. It breaks towns. It summons things.
🧠 Draw your way through magical quests with real EXP
> Use that EXP to level up unique familiars that follow you in your journey!
👻 Capture entirely too many ghosts and tear a hole in reality.
> Even succeeding too hard may have consequences! (Bad for the characters? Maybe. Cool for us? Absolutely!)
🌋 Accidentally let a volcano destroy a town because nobody finished the Bulfe quest.
> We don't blame anyone... but like they are all dead, so maybe don't let that happen again.
🐟 Fish up cryptids so disturbing the coastline started whispering back
> Don't worry about the human lips and teeth. That part is normal for fish. The massive glowing eye and writhing guts, not so much.
🐉 Swear fealty to Beep, our chaotic noodle mascot who may or may not be a god!
> She promises to use your soul wisely... if she could just remember where she put it...
And you know what that means?
It means you get to:
✏️ Design original characters and evolve their familiars with bizarre traits
📜 Contribute to a player-driven worldstate where even abandoned quests leave scars
🎭 Roleplay, worldbuild, or just vibe in our weird little artistic cult
You don’t have to be a pro.
Just be ready to matter, and be ready to write a story bigger than yourself ... because the Bulfe's of the world aren't waiting.
Why are you?

Character Sketching Basics (for total beginners)
I've never really made art tutorials, but I do actually semi-routinely teach digital art classes to local kids in my area. As a result of this, I have also now signed up for a volunteer character sketching workshop for such kids that I am hosting tomorrow.
I figured that since I will have 15 kids there and I can't possibly introduce them to the base concepts one by one, I should make some easy to understand slides that try and teach them the basic thoughts that go behind a good character sketch. Aaaand I figured I would share them here. They are in danish, but I will translate underneath each pic. And before any other of the amazing artists on here start pointing out that this is possibly a bit too simplsitic to be a "proper" tutorial - the workshop is for the 11-14 crowd that may have never heard these things before. That's why it's kept as completely simple as possible. Anyway, here we go:
Tumblr media
When we draw characters, we usually talk about three pimary stages - Sketch, Inking and Colors/Shading. That's a lot of stuff to learn, but we'll focus on sketching for today, alright?
Tumblr media
A good way to learn how to draw characters is by learning to understand two great tools - the STICK FIGURE and the BASIC SHAPES.
Tumblr media
The Stick Figure helps you understand what a body looks like and how it fits together (anatomy), and makes it easier to portray a body in motion. (This also goes for nonhuman creatures - consider the stick figure their "skeleton")
Tumblr media
Once you have your skeleton, you can use basic shapes (triangles, squares and circles of all kinds) to build the rest of the body. Your choice of shapes and their sizes can make a massive difference! Notice, how blocky Superman looks compared to the skinny Anne here, even though their skeletons are built basically the same way.
Tumblr media
You can also use basic shapes to create some really unique characters, and maybe even tell us something about their personality at the same time. This is called "shape language". Take a look at how some famous characters use very simple shapes. The always friendly and happy Mickey Mouse is round and friendly-looking. With just three circles, he became famous worldwide. The skinny, refined Pearl's body consists primarilly of triangles and long circles - this works really well for a dancer, who is also a bit of a perfectionist. She even carries a spear, which is a pointy weapon that really needs the one wielding it to be precise! Almost every character in "Phineas and Ferb" consists of simple shapes that make them easy to recognize. Phineas and Ferbs' heads consist of just a big triangle and two squares respectively. And with Isabelle and Candace, you can even spot a couple of half-circles!
Tumblr media
If you learn how to see these shapes and where they are hiding, you can learn to draw almost any character you can imagine - even the ones that look super difficult and complicated. Shredder here looks almost impossible to draw, but even he has a lot of squares and triangles you can find if you look close enough - and if you drew a solid enough skeleton to start with, so you can tell where certain things are supposed to go on his body. You also use these techniques to draw harder parts of the body, such as hands. It's really difficult, but it'll come to you with practice.
Tumblr media
Okay - let's use what we've learned! Pick a character or make something up yourself. Figure out the characters' skeleton. Go ahead and draw them in a different pose, if you want and if you feel you can. Find and add the characters' basic shapes and add them on top of the skeleton to make a body. Add details and start erasing the lines you no longer need.
Tumblr media
A FEW LAST PIECES OF ADVICE - Draw softly and loosely. It's hard to erase your lines if you pressed down hard on your paper. - Try not to choose a character that's too complicated to start with. We all gotta start somewhere. - Don't worry about your sketch looking a little messy. After all, it's just a sketch. All it needs to be is a good starting point for when you ink it later. - Your sketch does NOT need to look 100% like the original. The important part is that you can spot how their bodies are constructed, and find all their most important traits. - If there's a part you are having a hard time drawing, take a break and work on something else. Sometimes your brain just needs a little break. - Ask for help! That's why I'm here! - Remember to take breaks now and then. It's good for your hands and for your backs. ----
Soooo yeah. That's my tutorial for ABSOLUTE beginner kids. I hope this will land well tomorrow.

i wanted to put together a little study outline for some locked in summer art studying for, not only myself, but others who struggle with finding a direction for their art studies who'd like to study along with me. unfortunately, i'm a bit behind the schedule that i had wanted to be at due to irl Things going on, so these might come out a bit delayed than originally intended. i hope they're able to assist others in improving their art skills and practicing some study habits! happy learning + drawing ~ (pls let me know in replies if there are some other popular tags i could add to reach more budding or practicing artists ~ )
i intended for the first two weeks practice prompt to release today but i still have some things to touch up and i've got a lot going on today so it might have to be pushed back to releasing tomorrow; apologies.
