been digging through more vintage art. one thing i'd love to get a grip of, on top of the whole comics thing, is acting with hands. leonard starr is very, very good at it
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i feel like i've been at this long enough that when needed, i can draw a correct hand, but not necessarily a convincing hand. as in, attached to a character that's thinking and feeling and has had a whole life previous to you seeing them in whatever tiny box i'm conveying. know what i mean?
these have all the earned confidence of somebody who is clearly a very good draftsman, but has also drawn a lot of people from life a lot of times. it's really easy to fall back on visual clichés (have you ever watched an animated movie, often the newer ones, and it's so bouncy and communicative that it loops back into kind of creepy? people don't act like that) and lord knows i do it, so i'm going to try to be really cognizant of how i use hands for acting moving forward. the expression sheet i'm fiddling with will be great practice for this. wish me luck!

Here's that distinction between hard work and natural talent again, this time with Izuku and All Might. Though in this case, All Might's natural talent is likely overstated and partially the result of unreliable narrator Izuku.
All Might didn't have to deal with One for All past the point of singularity. All Might had multiple mentors who taught well, and at least one of them was accustomed to interacting with children. He also didn't have to face All for One directly until after more than two years of hero training (with the support of multiple mentors). Given these facts, objectively it's hard to say whether All Might was more of a natural talent than Izuku.
The real difference between the these two is their learning styles. All Might learns and fights intuitively. Because he relies on intuition, what is left for training in strength and drilling things into his muscle memory so he can move without needing to think.
Izuku is a prediction and analysis guy. He learns by observation. He breaks things down and then applies them. So while on a practical level, the strength training was necessary to bear One for All, Izuku becomes stronger by observing and facing opponents with different styles of combat.
Izuku believed he was having difficulty because he was somehow less talented, but arguably the issue was All Might's poor teaching that couldn't adjust to Izuku's learning style. This is less a critique of All Might's character than it is a demonstration of the broader tension in BNHA between the uniqueness of the individual versus institutions that demand one size fits all conformity.

Suggestion :
Mycroft was sent to do fieldwork a couple of times when he was younger and had just started working for his country. To his chagrin, he was good at it, but he hated it. He made it a point to prove to his employers that he was far more useful running things than wading in.
Thankfully, he was quickly considered to be indispensable at home, and too valuable to be sent on such missions.
No one is surprised when years later Mycroft successfully and effortlessly infiltrates a Serbian military organization.

I just got through reading What a Wicked Game to Play and ohhhh my god. @crackinglamb this is a masterpiece. I will never be over this. This is one of the best Solas characterizations I’ve ever read. Imogen is such a delight. The entire world state is so vivid and I am so very intrigued by all the background lore interwoven into the story and highlighted and featured that normally falls through the cracks. I just. There’s so much. I can’t possibly express it all into words. Thank you so much for writing this fic and sharing it with us, it was such a wonderful journey🥺the ending certainly had me in its grips, I was nearly in tears! I can’t wait to see where you’ll take it next!
