God it's kinda weird as hell constantly having to explain why I don't drink. Like I guarantee at a party I will be asked an average of three times by people who themselves are anywhere from a little jolly to pissed. Everytime I will say something trivial like 'i just don't like the taste' (which isn't untrue, just not the whole truth) and it's like ....I know you wanna probe but like what the fuck am I meant to say that doesn't come over as a massive downer?

Like sure I don't like the taste and therefore it's cheaper to be a soft drink kinda person

But also my greatest existential fear is that I cannot trust my own mind/perceptions/am mad and so I'm not gonna willingly envibe in anything particularly mind altering without first taking a lot of precautions

Also my first experiences of my elder siblings being drunk was unpleasant and scary in two different ways. Between the Christmas my brother first got drunk and laughing the whole time ended up holding a cushion over my face and triggering an intense coughing fit (something no adult at the party saw) and my sibling coming home from a party in which they had drank a ''mystery drink''' and ended up vomiting violently and having a very bad time it's not surprising I'm reluctant.

Also I have current friends that use alcohol as an unhealthy coping mechanism and I have a couple of times had to look after them in a bad state. Staying hypervigilant - sometimes when others refuse to acknowledge the gravity of the situation, staying awake with, seeking out outside help, helping them walk kinda thing is exhausting and again, fucking scary. Watching anyone that doesn't really want to be alive very much get blackout is terrifying.

And like I'm never gonna say that in a casual setting lol. What kind of person would? So by asking you're reminding me of that fact , bringing it up, and yet it's somehow my responsibility to manage the tone of the conversation by not replying in full honesty.
