In the serials I watch, when somebody comes and saves the day people cheer and clap hands and hug. But these clients didn't seem to be relieved, or grateful.

Something something Murderbot's trauma response/confusion over emotions means it struggles to find satisfaction in any outcome. You already DID save the day against the hostile fauna and the whole group DID cheer for you and they CLAPPED for you (twice!) and Ratthi wanted to HUG you and they verbally expressed their RELIEF at their safety and their GRATITUDE for you saving them... and you hated that response too :(

Why The Ending Sucks

Ok I figured it out. Hear me out:

The entire comic has a running theme best summed up as "who is controlling the narrative, and why are we listening to them?"

Hussie plays a caricaturized version of himself that he describes as "buffoonish" and "oafish". Caricature!Hussie is well-meaning, but a dumb idiot who's incredibly biased in favor of certain characters and in disfavor of others (the most obvious example being his "love" of Vriska, but there's also the way he constantly disparages Eridan). As a result, you have to be VERY SKEPTICAL and VERY CAREFUL when approaching Homestuck's narration, because even when the "best" narrator is at the helm, he's not 100% trustworthy and incapable of giving the readers an unbiased view of the story.

I say "best" because, importantly, Hussie isn't the story's only narrator. He and Doc Scratch explicitly fight over control of the story - Doc Scratch, the child abusing predator who engineered Alternia's fascist murder society, whose shaping of its history is explicitly described by character!Hussie as "fanfic". He is then killed by Lord English, who is described by Hussie as embodying the "toxically masculine" and by extension, the patriarchy, and Caliborn explicitly takes control of the story. John even grapples with Caliborn's version of events, calling out how sexist and misogynistic and shitty it is.

So if we're keeping score: control over the narrative is LITERALLY wrested away from Hussie (who was already struggling to be unbiased) by fascists, abusers, and the patriarchy. It's stressed multiple times that Caliborn/LE are responsible for literally everything that ever happens; the reason the Game Over timeline ends the way that it does is because the alpha timeline is, in essence, the narrative LE is telling: the forces of fascism get to claim the new universe, thereby propogating itself, while friendship dies and all hope is lost.

Who's in control of the narrative, and why are we listening to them?

There are other minor examples of this, too: Aranea is an exposition fairy, and she's biased as fuck and wrong ALL THE TIME about her own teammates. Karkat's explanations and rationalizations are constantly tinged with his own self-loathing and self-blame. Sollux and Meulin are both prophets as per their Mage class, but are both so bogged down by their own emotional issues that the futures they pick out are actively harmful. So on and so on. At nearly every turn, you have to interrogate who's telling the story, what their motivations are, and what they're overlooking or deliberately obfuscating.

So given that this theme is so prevalent, and so thoroughly weighted toward "well, actually, maybe you shouldn't take narration at face value and should interrogate it and come to your own conclusions," it would be Really Weird for the story to go "actually, you can totally trust the narrative now because everyone gets a happy ending".

So, I know that it makes me sound like a conspiracy theorist, but here's my genuine take on Homestuck's ending:

The ending is shitty on purpose because the viewer is intended to take it as a dare to refute the narration and make something better.

Why are we letting character!Hussie tell the story? He's a biased idiot. Why are we letting the various avatars of LE and Caliborn tell the story? They're fascist, misogynistic, predatory assholes.

And - because Homestuck is a story about life - why are we letting idiots, assholes, abusers, and creeps dictate the story of real life? The world is full of forces that would try to take control of the story and make everyone else play along, represented in microcosm within the text of Homestuck. We cannot let those forces win.

So please go out and do something kind and hopeful and loving in the world today. Thanks for reading.

Look, I know a lot of people are pointing out the double standards and general unpleasantness in the way PresAux treats Murderbot and thinks of constructs, particularly Security Units, but I actually think that it’s a complex and—ha!—human way of looking at it.

This is a situation where people are dealing with having to walk the walk instead of just talking the talk, and it’s harder than it seems and sometimes it is or would be actively hindering their survival. So yeah, they’re making edits to their morals and preconceived notions based on this deeply stressful and life-threatening situation, and sometimes the optics aren’t great, but it’s not about optics anymore.

They’ve been protected from having to deal with one of the biggest injustices in the galaxy in anything but theory, and now they’re finding that, well…

It’s easy to say “SecUnits are enslaved, we are ethically opposed to using them” when a major opportunity for your planet isn’t on the line.

It’s easy to say “SecUnits should not be forced to obey us or put themselves in danger for us” when you’re secure in the knowledge that the SecUnit you have is forced to obey you and protect you.

It’s easy to say “SecUnits are people” when you’ve never actually seen a SecUnit’s face and don’t even know they have faces, when you’ve never actually interacted with one as a person, when they have no negative or positive qualities or opinions of their own, they are just used as tools. That is, when they are only a victim of the system and not a whole, complex being.

It’s easy to say “SecUnits are enslaved and we are ethically opposed to them being used to attack others because we sympathize with them” when SecUnits appear to be the ones attacking you. When SecUnits are a physical threat you have to defend yourself against.

No one in PresAux has experience with Security Units other than what comes out of the entertainment feed, outside of Gurathin, who was up until a few years ago part of the larger Corporation machine and has a lot of unexamined beliefs about constructs, particularly those used as “killing machines.”

Anyway, what I’m trying to say in here is that PresAux minus Gurathin also started off with a lot of unexamined beliefs about constructs, specifically SecUnits, because they’ve never actually had to deal with them in practice, and now they’re trying to reconcile their beliefs with reality.

That is, the reality of what they’ve done and the reality of what SecUnit has done—with and without a governor module. If their SecUnit is its own being, does that mean they should judge it for what they believe is murder and what it believes (and was built to believe) is simply enforcing security?

I also feel like perhaps their lack of understanding of what a governor module is and does is relevant to their behavior and interactions with Murderbot and other security constructs. Their person to person interactions with SecUnits are solely with a SecUnit that has a disabled governor module, so, because human memories are short and easily distracted, they kind of forget that up until not long ago, Murderbot was controlled by a governor module, Murderbot was not a free agent, and the other SecUnits they’ve dealt with were decidedly not free agents.

The reality is that Murderbot is not an abused shelter dog who…okay, isn’t harmless but hey, that’s not its fault, and it wouldn’t harm them and it wouldn’t harm a human! But then, oh boy, it did…

The reality is that Murderbot is its own complex and confused being, and PresAux is complex and confused as well, because they’re examining their beliefs and what they’re finding that what they see and feel doesn’t always match the party line.

I woke up thinking abt Xisuma today and I’m still thinking about him

In my kid Xelqua AU, Xelqua doesn’t like Xisuma for some reason, no one knows why, and Xisuma does try to be liked ! He gets along with Grian—so why does his kid dislike him !!

I was thinking, I also headcanon that Xisuma isn’t human, he also comes from the void, like Watchers do.

I wondered, maybe Xisuma is something from the void that directly rivals Watchers ? Like, from an animalistic view. Something primal.

I imagine Grian has never noticed, since the first time he meets Xisuma he’s already filled with anxiety and adrenaline. So he learns to trust Xisuma before he even realizes.

Xisuma was quick to notice Grian was a Watcher, though that might come with being an admin.

I also thought abt Xelqua, the Saint, meeting Xisuma directly, and his wings puff up in defense under his cloak. His face doesn’t show it, but he pulls Grian to the side later like what is wrong with your admin ?

one of the funniest things to me in gw2 is that because every single map has its own meta (big map-wide event chain that everyone can participate in that usually builds to a final battle), each map also has its own unique language in map chat. you enter a new zone and are greeted with the most random ass things being said in chat like "north needs more stompers" "tm up!!!! tm down!!!!!!" "grab the charzookas" "djinn on apple" "stack on the mark to get eaten" "we failed the rock concert" and you're just like oh boy!!!! what is it this time!??!!!! and by the time you've gotten through the story in that map you're either completely fluent or even more confused than when you started
