Captive Prince makes you question your own morals.

Because no war is just. Because no victory comes without a graveyard behind it.

What happened to Damen: being sold into slavery, stripped of his identity, forced into servitude....was horrific. He was wronged. He was betrayed. He didn’t deserve it.

But being wronged doesn’t automatically make you right. He isn’t morally superior.

Because the truth is — he was the domino. He may be noble, He may be honorable , he may be loyal and He fights for his people, carries himself with pride. but he was still a soldier. Still a prince who killed. Whether he knew it or not, Damen was part of the machinery that destroyed lives.

The war might’ve been his father’s but the sword was in his hands.

You can’t justify war simply because you won. You can’t excuse destroyed lives because your cause was righteous. Victory doesn’t cleanse blood.

He didn’t abuse a child — but his kingdom’s victory made sure that child was orphaned, targeted, and left alone with a monster. His crown became the reason a 13-year-old was left defenseless.

Damen didn’t know. But ignorance doesn’t erase impact.

And when he finally does know, when he sees what his “honorable war” left behind, that’s when the story gets morally complicated. And that’s why it’s brilliant.

And Laurent?

Laurent may be cruel. He may be calculating. He may be a snake, a ruthless tactician, a dirty politician.

But you can’t say his hatred is misplaced.

He was thirteen when he lost everything. When he was orphaned, abused, and dismantled piece by piece.

You can’t call him a monster for not being a saint by the time he clawed his way to the end of that tunnel.

What kind of strength does it take to be surrounded by that much hate, to be abandoned by everyone who should have protected you and still not become the monster they made?

Laurent didn’t abandon his country, even when it abandoned him. He didn’t lose his mind, his purpose, or his moral compass, because somewhere, in the echoes of Auguste and their mother, that light stayed on.

And that tells you everything about who Laurent really is, and who his mother and brother must have been. Because even the most monstrous conditioning couldn’t wipe that out.

Captive Prince doesn’t give you clean heroes. It gives you people who were both victims and participants. It makes you sit with what it means to cause damage without meaning to, and whether redemption or absolution is possible when you’ve already taken everything from someone who deserved better.

It’s uncomfortable. And it should be.

This is a world of grey. No one is clean. And that’s the point.

PS. This post comes after many rereads. Kings Rising is my favorite of the trilogy, maybe because it finally feels two-sided, more fast-paced… or maybe just because it gives us HYN.

And honestly, that’s my eternal beef with books, movies, and shows: They give us hours, sometimes years of pain and conflict, and like two minutes of happiness at the very end. Like… didn’t I cry enough?? Give me more softness. Let me sit in the joy too.

Anyway. I guess I find some strange comfort in these boys and their anguish. (Might be a bit of a masochist, but here we are.) These are just my thoughts. There’s always more. Please add on if you feel something I didn’t say. 🫶

we cry "the innocent women and children" to appeal to the masses, to try and force their sympathy, but the men and boys are innocent too.

I have seen sons crying out for their mothers, their fathers, their siblings. I have seen them break down at the loss of their families. I have seen them cling to their dead and grieve.

I have seen fathers cradle their dead children, seen them kiss their faces and hold their little hands. I have seen them faint with grief when asked to identify the dead. I have seen them carry their sons and daughters. I have seen them fasting to provide what little they can for their families.

I have seen men and boys digging through the rubble with just their bare hands, I have seen them comforting strangers, playing with children, rocking them, hushing them, even if the face of such imminent danger. I have seen them cry, seen them grieve, seen them break down into each other's arms, seen them be selfless, beyond selfless, becoming something I don't have a word for.

I have seen the men who are doctors refuse to leave their patients, even when they have no medicine or supplies to give them, even when they're threatened with bombings. I have seen fathers who have lost all their children pick orphans up into their arms and proclaim them their child so they are not alone. I have seen men and boys digging pets out of the rubble.

the men are innocent too. the men and boys are being hurt and killed too. the men and boys are grieving too. the men and boys are scared too. the men and boys are fighting to save their people too. the men and boys deserve to be fought for too.

Sentient Mystery Shack, who is really biased towards Stan, so when Ford tells Stan he has to give it back after the summer it’s on sight.

Ford keeps tripping over nothing, nothing is where it's supposed to be and somehow he keeps running into closets when he tries to go outside.

But the worst part, the WORST part is that Ford's lightbulb just won't. Work. No matter what he does it keeps flickering and exploding.

Ford is spiraling. 

There is no reason why it shoudln’t work. All his trial runs work perfectly. He’s already checked the Shacks wiring three times and relearned this dimensions science from the ground up. 

Nothing works.

The Rift? Bill? The impending apocalypse? Eating? Sleep? Who cares about that. 

WHY. WONT. THE. LIGHTBULB. WORK???

It doesn’t help that Stan keeps laughing at him.

“Then you do it!” Ford eventually snaps at Stan.

Stan shrugs and with a little song under his breath screws his own lightbulb in. It works perfectly.

Stanford screams.

I’m not gonna lie, the whole “what if a big, hairy trans man started using the women’s bathroom? what are TERFs gonna do then?” thing kinda pisses me off being used as some checkmate, because it insinuates that passing trans men would have any kind of power in that situation. If a passing trans man is forced to use the women’s bathroom, you know what will happen? Security will be called on him, he’ll be thrown out, and he’ll be forced to out himself as trans in order to avoid punishment, which will put an even bigger target on his back. He’s still going to be harassed. He’s still going to be forced into an uncomfortable and potentially dangerous situation, and he probably won’t avoid punishment anyway because the current laws in place are never going to favour any trans person’s defence over a cis person’s.

It also completely ignores trans men who aren’t “big and hairy” and don’t pass enough to be mistaken for a cis man. Non-passing trans men (or even men who look or sound effeminate enough to be suspected) who are forced to use the women’s bathrooms are still at a huge risk of harassment or even violence, especially young trans boys who are forced into their assigned bathrooms at school. Nex Benedict was literally murdered in a girl’s bathroom. Girls and women aren’t these inherently non-violent, peaceful and submissive beings (for one thing, that’s misogynistic). Trans men and boys get beaten up by them too, because most of us pre-T aren’t considered a threat, and we fucking die.

That’s not even to mention the trouble we already have in men’s bathrooms, because if we don’t pass, cis men will interrogate us on whether or not we’re “real men” and then sexually assault us if they discover we’re trans. Corrective rapes that trans men face is not something to be ignored, and I have trans male friends that it’s happened to who are lucky to be alive right now.

Bathroom laws will affect us just as much. The violence that trans women face is something that trans men can also relate to, and both need to be talked about without people categorising all trans men as “big, hairy, strong men able to beat up anyone who tries to threaten them” when that’s not the case like 90% of the time. Acting like passing trans men are just there to make TERFs look stupid, when TERFs are the ones who are violent towards us no matter how much we pass, is just diminishing our experiences.
