I don't think suffering leads to the creation of a more moral person by default--there are all kinds of cruel ways human psychology navigates trauma, creating cycles of abuse--but the most notably openly, gleefully cruel people I can think of do seem to have been handed everything on a silver platter, and are fundamentally disconnected from reality as a result.
