Top Benefits of Outsourcing a Cost Estimating Service for Your Business
In today's competitive business landscape, accurate cost estimation plays a crucial role in ensuring project success. Whether in construction, manufacturing, engineering, or other industries, having precise cost projections helps companies manage budgets, reduce risks, and improve profitability. While some businesses prefer in-house estimating teams, many are now outsourcing cost estimating services to take advantage of specialized expertise, advanced technology, and cost efficiency. This article explores the top benefits of outsourcing a cost estimating service and why it is a smart decision for businesses.
What Is a Cost Estimating Service?
A cost estimating service provides detailed financial assessments of a project by analyzing material costs, labor expenses, equipment, overhead, and other factors. These services help businesses prepare accurate budgets, bid competitively, and avoid financial risks. By outsourcing cost estimating services, companies gain access to skilled professionals who specialize in delivering precise cost assessments.
Top Benefits of Outsourcing a Cost Estimating Service
Access to Expertise and Industry Knowledge One of the main advantages of outsourcing a cost estimating service is gaining access to experienced professionals who specialize in project estimation. These experts have deep industry knowledge, understand market trends, and are familiar with the latest cost estimation methodologies. Their expertise ensures accurate projections, reducing the likelihood of miscalculations that could lead to financial setbacks.
Cost Savings and Reduced Overhead Expenses Maintaining an in-house estimating team can be expensive, requiring salaries, training, software, and office space. Outsourcing a cost estimating service eliminates these overhead costs, allowing businesses to pay only for the services they need. This approach is especially beneficial for small to mid-sized companies that may not have the resources to maintain a full-time estimating team.
Improved Accuracy and Reduced Financial Risks Errors in cost estimation can lead to budget overruns, project delays, and financial losses. A professional cost estimating service uses advanced tools and proven techniques to ensure accuracy. By outsourcing, businesses reduce the risk of miscalculations, ensuring their projects stay on budget and on schedule.
Access to Advanced Estimating Software and Tools Professional cost estimating services utilize sophisticated software to generate accurate estimates. These tools incorporate real-time pricing data, historical cost databases, and AI-driven analytics to improve precision. Instead of investing in expensive software and training employees to use it, businesses can outsource cost estimating services and leverage these advanced technologies at a fraction of the cost.
Faster Turnaround Times and Increased Efficiency Outsourcing a cost estimating service speeds up the estimation process, allowing businesses to prepare budgets and submit bids faster. External estimation firms have dedicated teams working exclusively on cost calculations, ensuring timely delivery of accurate estimates. This efficiency helps businesses meet tight deadlines and stay ahead of competitors.
Scalability and Flexibility for Different Projects Businesses often work on projects of varying sizes and complexities. Hiring a full-time estimating team may not be cost-effective for companies that experience fluctuating workloads. By outsourcing a cost estimating service, businesses can scale their estimation needs up or down based on project demands. This flexibility allows them to manage costs effectively while maintaining high-quality estimates.
Enhanced Competitive Bidding Accurate cost estimation is crucial for competitive bidding. An overestimated bid may cause a business to lose a project, while an underestimated bid could result in financial losses. A cost estimating service ensures that businesses submit precise, well-calculated bids, increasing their chances of securing contracts while maintaining profitability.
Focus on Core Business Activities Outsourcing a cost estimating service allows businesses to focus on their core operations rather than diverting time and resources toward cost calculations. Project managers, engineers, and business owners can dedicate their efforts to project execution, client management, and strategic planning, leading to overall business growth.
Compliance with Industry Standards and Regulations Professional cost estimating services ensure compliance with industry standards, building codes, and regulatory requirements. This is particularly important in industries like construction, where legal compliance is essential to avoid fines and project delays. Outsourced estimating firms stay updated with the latest regulations, ensuring accurate cost assessments that align with industry guidelines.
Better Risk Management and Contingency Planning A cost estimating service helps businesses identify potential financial risks and plan for contingencies. Professional estimators conduct risk assessments, considering factors like price fluctuations, labor shortages, and unexpected expenses. This proactive approach enables businesses to allocate contingency funds and prevent financial disruptions.
Higher Accuracy in Multi-Disciplinary Projects Large-scale projects often involve multiple disciplines, such as civil engineering, electrical work, and mechanical installations. A cost estimating service has expertise across different industries, ensuring comprehensive estimates that consider all aspects of a project. This holistic approach minimizes cost discrepancies and improves overall budget accuracy.
Increased Client and Investor Confidence Accurate cost estimation builds trust with clients, stakeholders, and investors. When businesses provide well-documented cost estimates, they demonstrate professionalism and financial reliability. Clients are more likely to approve projects, while investors gain confidence in the company’s ability to manage finances effectively.
Real-World Application of Outsourced Cost Estimating Services
Consider a construction company that frequently bids on large-scale projects. Maintaining an in-house estimating team would be expensive and require continuous training to stay updated with industry trends. By outsourcing a cost estimating service, the company receives precise cost assessments, meets bid deadlines efficiently, and increases its chances of winning contracts—all while reducing operational costs.
Similarly, a manufacturing firm planning to expand its production facilities can benefit from outsourced cost estimating services. With professional estimators handling the financial projections, the company can make informed investment decisions and allocate resources efficiently.
Conclusion
Outsourcing a cost estimating service is a strategic move for businesses looking to improve budgeting accuracy, reduce costs, and enhance project efficiency. By leveraging expert knowledge, advanced technology, and faster turnaround times, businesses can gain a competitive edge in their industry. Whether in construction, engineering, or manufacturing, outsourcing cost estimating services provides financial clarity and ensures project success.

Medford Gutter Cleaning: Essential Protection Against Southern Oregon’s Seasonal Hazards
Medford Gutter Cleaning is a vital maintenance task for homeowners in Southern Oregon, where seasonal weather patterns and natural debris demand proactive care. Situated in the Rogue Valley, Medford faces heavy rainfall, winter storms, and an abundance of pine needles and deciduous foliage. These factors make Medford Gutter Cleaning essential to prevent water damage, protect structural integrity, and maintain a safe property. Clogged gutters can lead to overflowing water, foundation erosion, roof leaks, and pest infestations, underscoring the need for regular upkeep tailored to the region’s unique challenges.
The area’s climate poses specific risks for gutter systems. Autumn leaves, pine needles, and wind-blown debris quickly accumulate, obstructing water flow. Without routine Medford Gutter Cleaning, stagnant water can freeze during winter, forming ice dams that strain gutters and roofs. Professional services in Medford use specialized tools like high-pressure vacuums, gutter scoops, and inspection cameras to clear blockages efficiently. Many also install gutter guards to reduce debris buildup, offering long-term solutions for homes surrounded by Medford’s dense tree canopy.
Neglecting gutter maintenance carries hidden dangers. Overflowing water seeps into walls, promoting mold growth and compromising insulation. Over time, improper drainage can weaken foundations, leading to costly repairs. Local experts emphasize biannual Medford Gutter Cleaning—ideally in spring and fall—to align with peak debris seasons. Post-storm inspections are equally critical, as sudden weather events can dislodge branches or deposit unexpected materials. Early detection of issues like rust, loose fasteners, or misaligned gutters helps prevent minor problems from escalating.
Choosing a reliable Medford Gutter Cleaning service requires evaluating experience, safety protocols, and eco-friendly practices. Reputable companies are licensed, insured, and trained to navigate steep roofs and unstable ladders safely. Many offer free estimates, transparent pricing, and debris recycling, aligning with Southern Oregon’s sustainability values. Seasonal maintenance contracts simplify scheduling, ensuring gutters remain functional year-round without homeowners needing to coordinate individual appointments.
While DIY gutter cleaning may seem cost-effective, it poses significant risks. Climbing ladders without proper safety gear or expertise increases the likelihood of accidents. Untrained individuals might also overlook subtle issues like pest nests, hidden decay, or improper gutter slope. Professionals specializing in Medford Gutter Cleaning spot these problems during inspections, performing minor repairs and ensuring optimal water flow. Their work not only safeguards properties but also extends gutter lifespan, saving homeowners money over time.
In conclusion, Medford Gutter Cleaning is a non-negotiable investment for preserving home value and safety in Southern Oregon’s dynamic climate. Partnering with local experts ensures efficient debris removal, system upgrades, and preventative care tailored to Medford’s environmental demands. Regular maintenance mitigates risks of water damage, pest activity, and structural decay, offering homeowners peace of mind. By prioritizing Medford Gutter Cleaning, residents protect their properties from the region’s relentless weather while contributing to the longevity of their most valuable asset. 🏡🌲

Ilana Berger at MMFA:
As President Donald Trump’s administration orders mass layoffs and cuts to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, local meteorologists and influencer storm chasers — including some weather experts who previously claimed to avoid politics or expressed right-leaning views — are speaking out in support of federal employees and the essential information provided by the agency.
Trump’s funding cuts and layoffs will hobble NOAA and the National Weather Service, potentially restricting access to a vital public good that costs taxpayers very little
NOAA and its subsidiaries, including the National Weather Service, employ thousands of scientists, engineers, and other experts to conduct vital research that is shared with the public. NOAA’s products and services range “from daily weather forecasts, severe storm warnings, and climate monitoring to fisheries management, coastal restoration and supporting marine commerce.” The NWS estimates that the critical information it provides costs just $4 per U.S. resident per year. [National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, accessed 3/14/25; The New York Times, 2/8/25]
Project 2025 — the right-wing plan for a second Trump administration organized by The Heritage Foundation with over 100 conservative partner organizations — called for NOAA to be “broken up and downsized” and urged the National Weather Service to “fully commercialize its forecasting operations.” Weather experts across the country have expressed alarm at Project 2025’s plans to dismantle NOAA under the new administration. Project 2025 architect Russell Vought, who now heads Trump’s Office of Management and Budget, has promised, “We want the bureaucrats to be traumatically affected.” [Media Matters, 5/31/24, 9/27/24, 2/28/25; ProPublica, 10/28/24]
Starting on February 27, the Trump administration has laid off more than 800 NOAA employees, plus another 500 who resigned if the agency promised to pay them through September. According to The New York Times, “The two rounds of departures together represent about 10 percent of NOAA’s roughly 13,000 employees.” On March 12, NOAA announced in an email to its staffers that the agency would be laying off another 1,029 employees, or roughly 10% of the agency’s remaining workforce. [The New York Times, 2/27/25, 2/28/25]
The Associated Press: “After this upcoming round of cuts, NOAA will have eliminated about one out of four jobs since President Donald Trump took office in January.” “This is not government efficiency,” said former NOAA Administrator Rick Spinrad. “It is the first steps toward eradication. There is no way to make these kinds of cuts without removing or strongly compromising mission capabilities.” [The Associated Press, 3/12/25]
The NWS’ National Hurricane Center has made great strides in tracking dangerous storms, but Trump’s layoffs are threatening that progress. A February preview of a report from the National Hurricane Center concluded that for the first time, the center managed to “explicitly forecast a system that was not yet a tropical cyclone (pre-Helene potential tropical cyclone) to become a 100-kt (115 mph) major hurricane within 72 hours.” However, experts fear that funding cuts and layoffs at NOAA’s Office of Aircraft Operations will impact the ability of the agency’s specialized “Hurricane Hunters” to collect data used for tracking and predicting destructive storms. [National Hurricane Center, 2/24/25; Yale Climate Connections, 3/6/25]
Meteorologists and storm chasers of all political persuasions issue dire warnings that the Project 2025/DOGE-inspired cuts to the NOAA and the NWS threaten public safety and forecast accuracy.

With millions of solar devices failing, the African solar repair movement is training local technicians to extend their lifespan.
Africa’s solar energy boom has changed lives, bringing power to millions without electricity access. However, as solar equipment ages, a growing number of systems are breaking down. Without repair services, communities risk losing their only source of power.
A growing network of solar repair entrepreneurs is working to fix this problem. Known as the African solar repair movement, this initiative trains local technicians to restore broken solar devices, extending their lifespan and keeping power accessible in off-grid areas. Experts say this approach is crucial for creating a sustainable solar economy.
Solar energy has expanded rapidly across Africa over the past decade. In 2014, the continent had just 1.67 gigawatts of solar capacity. By 2023, that number had grown nearly tenfold to 13.48 gigawatts—enough to power 100 million lightbulbs.
Africa is an ideal location for solar energy. According to the International Energy Agency, the continent has 60% of the world’s best solar resources. In many areas, solar is already the cheapest way to generate electricity.
However, as more solar devices are installed, a new problem has emerged: maintenance and repair. Solar products such as home lighting kits and mini-grids are breaking down; without proper servicing, they become waste.
According to SolarAid, a nonprofit focused on solar access in Africa, over 250 million solar energy kits worldwide have fallen into disrepair. In sub-Saharan Africa alone, 75% of all solar products—an estimated 110 million solar lights—no longer work.
Most of these devices could be fixed with simple repairs. However, because there is little infrastructure for solar maintenance, broken systems are often discarded.
This creates three major problems. One is the loss of access to electricity. Many communities depend entirely on solar power. When systems fail, families are left in the dark.
Two, electronic waste accumulation. Non-repairable solar devices contribute to Africa’s growing e-waste problem.
Finally, there is economic loss. Solar products are expensive for African households, and replacing them frequently is not sustainable.
To address this crisis, organizations like SolarAid have launched programs to train local repair agents. These entrepreneurs, often called “solar repair agents,” learn to diagnose and fix common solar equipment failures, such as faulty batteries, wiring issues, and broken switches.
Father Vincent Ngwira, a Catholic priest in Zambia, is one of these repair agents. He has been involved in solar energy distribution since 2017 and recently completed a three-day training program to repair solar devices in his community.
“In the past, people used candles for light, and that led to house fires,” says Ngwira. “Solar changed everything, but now many of these devices are breaking. Learning to repair them has been empowering.”
In September 2023, he fixed a faulty solar panel and a broken flashlight switch. The flashlight repair cost just 20 Zambian Kwacha ($0.75)—a price that makes solar maintenance affordable for even the poorest households.
The African solar repair movement does more than keep the lights on. It also provides economic and environmental benefits: Repair technicians and solar entrepreneurs gain new income opportunities. Repairing solar devices prevents unnecessary e-waste, and keeping money within communities instead of spending on new imports strengthens financial resilience.
In Zambia, 10 repair agents and 7 advanced technicians are now fixing more complex solar failures. SolarAid teams in Zambia and Malawi have repaired over 2,400 solar products in the past year.
“We’re creating a sustainable solar economy,” says Fred Mwale, project manager for SolarAid in Zambia. “Repairing devices instead of replacing them benefits both people and the planet.”
Despite its success, the African solar repair movement faces several challenges.
One is that spare parts are limited. Many solar batteries and components must be imported from China, which can take months. Manufacturers also limit access to repair information to protect their designs.
Two, repair shops must be centrally located in rural areas to be accessible. Some people still have to travel long distances to reach them.
Finally, Zambia alone has 72 spoken languages, making communication difficult for technicians working in remote villages.
Mwale believes that the movement can overcome these obstacles with better support. “We need manufacturers to make spare parts more available and governments to support repair-friendly policies,” he says.
Other renewable energy sources, such as wind power, also face maintenance challenges. However, large-scale wind and hydroelectric projects are usually managed by corporations with dedicated repair teams.
Solar, on the other hand, is often distributed through small-scale systems to individual households. This makes community-based repair models like the African solar repair movement even more essential.
The future of the African solar repair movement looks promising. With better policies and funding, experts predict that solar repair could expand across the continent.
Innovations like 3D-printed solar components and community repair hubs could make repairs even more accessible. Governments may also introduce policies that require manufacturers to provide repairable designs and spare parts.
With Africa’s demand for solar energy increasing, a strong repair network will be essential to powering the continent.
The African solar repair movement is proving that renewable energy isn’t just about installing new systems—it’s about keeping them running for generations. As Africa pushes toward sustainable and affordable energy for all, repair initiatives will play a crucial role in shaping the future.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
June 4, 2025
Heather Cox Richardson
Jun 04, 2025
Just hours after President Donald J. Trump posted on social media yesterday that “[b]ecause of Tariffs, our Economy is BOOMING!” a new report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) said the opposite. Founded in 1961, the OECD is a forum in which 38 market-based democracies cooperate to promote sustainable economic growth.
The OECD’s economic outlook reports that economic growth around the globe is slowing because of Trump’s trade war. It projects global growth slowing from 3.3% in 2024 to 2.9% in 2025 and 2026. That economic slowdown is concentrated primarily in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and China.
The OECD predicts that growth in the United States will decline from 2.8% in 2024 to 1.6% in 2025 and 1.5% in 2026.
The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released two analyses today of Trump’s policies that add more detail to that report. The CBO’s estimate for the effect of Trump’s current tariffs—which are unlikely to stay as they are—is that they will raise inflation and slow economic growth as consumers bear their costs. The CBO says it is hard to anticipate how the tariffs will change purchasing behavior, but it estimates that the tariffs will reduce the deficit by $2.8 trillion over ten years.
Also today, the CBO’s analysis of the Republicans’ “One Big, Beautiful Bill” is that it will add $2.4 trillion to the deficit over the next decade because the $1.2 trillion in spending cuts in the measure do not fully offset the $3.7 trillion in tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations. Republicans have met this CBO score with attacks on the CBO, but its estimate is in keeping with those of a wide range of economists and think tanks.
Taken together, these studies illustrate how Trump’s economic policies are designed to transfer wealth from consumers to the wealthy and corporations. From 1981 to 2021, American policies moved $50 trillion from the bottom 90% of Americans to the top 1%. After Biden stopped that upward transfer, the Trump administration is restarting it again, on steroids.
Just how these policies are affecting Americans is no longer clear, though. Matt Grossman of the Wall Street Journal reported today that economists no longer trust the accuracy of the government’s inflation data. Officials from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which compiles a huge monthly survey of employment and costs, told economists that staffing shortages and a hiring freeze have forced them to cut back on their research and use less precise methods for figuring out price changes. Grossman reports that the bureau has also cut back on the number of places where it collects data and that the administration has gotten rid of committees of external experts that worked to improve government statistics.
There is more than money at stake in the administration’s policies. The administration's gutting of the government seeks to decimate the modern government that regulates business, provides a basic social safety net, promotes infrastructure, and protects civil rights and to replace it with a government that permits a few wealthy men to rule.
The CBO score for the Republicans’ omnibus bill projects that if it is enacted, 16 million people will lose access to healthcare insurance over the next decade in what is essentially an assault on the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. The bill also dramatically cuts Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Plan (SNAP) benefits, clean energy credits, aid for student borrowers, benefits for federal workers, and consumer protection services, while requiring the sale of public natural resources.
These cuts continue those the administration has made since Trump took office, many of which fell under the hand of the “Department of Government Efficiency.” But, while billionaire Elon Musk was the figurehead for that group, it appears his main interest was in collecting data. His understudy, Office of Management and Budget director Russell Vought, appears to have determined the direction of the cuts, which did not save money so much as decimate the parts of the government that the authors of Project 2025 wanted to destroy.
Vought was a key author of Project 2025, whose aim is to disrupt and destroy the United States government in order to center a Christian, heteronormative, male-dominated family as the primary element of society. To do so, the plan calls for destroying the administrative state, withdrawing the United States from global affairs, and ending environmental and business regulations.
Yesterday the White House asked Congress to cancel $9.4 billion in already-appropriated spending that the Department of Government Efficiency identified as wasteful, a procedure known as “rescission.” Trump aides say the money funds programs that promote what they consider inappropriate ideologies, including public media networks PBS and NPR; the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which provides food and basic medical care globally; and PEPFAR, the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief that was established under President George W. Bush to combat HIV/AIDS in more than 50 countries and is currently credited with saving about 26 million lives.
Vought appeared today before the House Appropriations Committee, where members scolded him for neglecting to provide a budget for the year, which they need to do their jobs. But Vought had plenty to say about the things he is doing. According to ProPublica’s Andy Kroll, he claimed that under Biden “every agency became a tool of the Left.” He said the White House will continue to ask for rescissions, but also noted that, as Project 2025 laid out, he does not believe that the 1974 Impoundment Control Act, which requires the executive branch to spend the money that Congress has appropriated, is constitutional, despite court decisions saying it is.
Representative Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) told Vought: “Be honest, this is never about government efficiency. In fact, an efficient government, a government that capably serves the American people and proves good government is achievable is what you fear the most. You want a government so broken, so dysfunctional, so starved of resources, so full of incompetent political lackeys and bereft of experts and professionals that its departments and agencies cannot feasibly achieve the goals and the missions to which they are lawfully directed. Your goal is privatization, for the biggest companies to have unchecked power, for an economy that does not work for the middle class, for working and vulnerable families. You want the American people to have no one to turn to, but to the billionaires and the corporations this administration has put in charge. Waste, fraud, and abuse are not the targets of this administration. They are your primary objectives.”
The use of the government to impose evangelical beliefs on the country, even at the expense of lives, also appears to be an administration goal. Yesterday, the administration announced it is ending the Biden administration’s 2022 guidance to hospital emergency rooms that accept Medicare—which is virtually all of them—requiring that under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act they must perform an abortion in an emergency if the procedure is necessary to prevent a patient’s organ failure or severe hemorrhaging. The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act requires emergency rooms to stabilize patients.
The Trump administration will no longer enforce that policy. Last year, an investigation by the Associated Press found that even when the Biden administration policy was being enforced, dozens of pregnant women, some of whom needed emergency abortions, were turned away from emergency rooms with advice to “let nature take its course.”
Finally tonight, in what seems likely to be an attempt to distract attention from the omnibus bill and all the controversy surrounding it, Trump banned Harvard from hosting foreign students. He also banned nationals from a dozen countries—Afghanistan, Chad, Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Myanmar, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen—from entering the United States, an echo of the travel ban of his first term that threw the country into chaos.
Trump justified his travel ban by citing the attack Sunday in Boulder, Colorado, on peaceful demonstrators marching to support Israeli hostages in Gaza. An Egyptian national who had overstayed a tourist visa hurled Molotov cocktails at the marchers, injuring 15 people.
Egypt is not on the list of countries whose nationals Trump has banned from the United States.

Lawmakers in Hawaii have passed first-of-its-kind legislation that will increase the state’s lodging tax to raise money for environmental protection and strengthening defenses against natural disasters fueled by the climate crisis.
Hawaii’s governor, Josh Green, supports the creation of the so-called “green fee”, and is expected to sign it.
“This legislation, which I intend to sign, is the first of its kind in the nation and represents a generational commitment to protect our ‘āina [land],” Green said in a statement. “Hawai‘i is truly setting a new standard to address the climate crisis.”
The bill passed on Friday adds a 0.75% levy to the state’s existing tax on hotel rooms, timeshares, vacation rentals and other short-term accommodations. It also imposes a new 11% tax on cruise ship bills, prorated for the number of days the vessels are in Hawaii ports.
Officials estimate the tax will generate nearly $100m annually. They say the money will be used for projects like replenishing sand on eroding Waikiki beaches, promoting the use of hurricane clips to secure roofs during powerful storms and clearing flammable invasive grasses like those that fed the deadly wildfire that destroyed downtown Lahaina in 2023.
The state’s house and senate, both controlled by large majorities of Democrats, passed the measure by wide margins.
Experts say the bill is the first of its kind in the US.
Hawaii already levies a 10.25% tax on short-term rentals. As of 1 January, the tax will rise to 11%. Hawaii’s counties separately charge a 3% lodging tax, and travelers also have to pay the 4.712% general excise tax that applies to all virtually all goods and services. The cumulative tax bill at checkout will climb to 18.712%, among the highest in the nation.
Green, the governor, argued the increase was small enough tourists would not feel much of a difference. As many visitors travel to the state to enjoy the environment, he predicted they would welcome committing dollars to protect shorelines and communities.
“The more you cultivate good environmental policy, and the more you invest in perfecting our lived space, the more likely it is we’re going to have actually lifelong, committed travelers to Hawaii,” he told the Associated Press.
Zane Edleman, a visitor from Chicago, said he could envision the extra cost prompting some travelers to head elsewhere else, like Florida. But, he said, it would depend on how the state shares information about what it does with the money.
“If you really focus on the point – this is to save the climate and actually have proof that this is where the funds are going, and that there’s an actual result that’s happening from that, I think people could buy into it,” Edleman said.
The first draft of the legislation called for a larger increase, but lawmakers pared it back.

When Rebecca Kornman was a student at Kenyon College, she and some of her friends picked up a voyeuristic hobby. Using the Ohio liberal arts school’s student directory, they found students’ home addresses and looked them up on Zillow to see how much their families’ homes cost.
“It became a kind of controversial thing that people were talking about,” says Kornman, 25. While some found it endlessly entertaining to dive into the finances of a student body where almost one in five students come from families in the top 1 percent, the popular pastime struck a nerve with a particular crowd.
“People would always frame it as, ‘Well, you shouldn't do that, because some people are embarrassed about where they live.’” But she found out that one of the main crusaders against the resource was a student who grew up in a multimillion-dollar home in SoHo, Manhattan. And another student who, she says, was “outwardly saying that they were broke and they grew up in poverty” was just one Zillow search away from being found out. “Someone was like, ‘Bro, go on the directory. They live in a brownstone, a five-story brownstone.’”
“I think it's definitely more taboo the more money you have,” Kornman says. “You're all on the same page when you're in college. And so to differentiate each other, especially if someone's going out of their way to maybe obscure some of the facts of their life, it gives you good perspective.”
Zillow, the hugely popular and addictive real-estate platform launched in 2006, has gone from simply a tool to buy and sell homes to a full-fledged phenomenon. It’s used by 227 million unique visitors every month and had 2.4 billion visits in just the first quarter of 2025. (The company has such a vice-grip on real estate listings, it was recently sued by Compass for its alleged attempted monopoly on online home listings.) Turns out, it owes its mass appeal, in part, to nosy people looking to satisfy their undying curiosity about their peers’ financial lives.
When you look up an address on Zillow, a Zestimate—Zillow’s estimate of a given property’s current value—appears below photos of the property. It’s calculated using “millions of data points” including public records, MLS (multiple listing service) feeds, tax assessments, recent sales, and updates provided directly from homeowners, according to Claire Carroll, a spokesperson for Zillow. Carroll says the estimates are fairly accurate, with a median error rate nationwide of just under 2 percent for on-market homes and 7 percent for off-market homes. The price history, which includes dates of past sales with corresponding prices, is sourced through public property records, county tax assessors, and local MLS. Zillow also provides an estimation of monthly rent for rental units.
Zillow does not give users the option to hide their home’s Zestimate and price history. “Open access to this kind of public information is a really important part of a fair housing market,” says Amanda Pendleton, Zillow’s home trends expert. But while not everyone is thrilled with having the value and cost of their home on full display for anyone who’s curious, others take full advantage of the publicity of this information by actively searching for the details of their friends’ housing costs—and some are extrapolating Zillow’s figures to get a fuller picture of their friends’ financial situations.
Like Kornman, Gillian Williams, 27, took up this pastime in college, using a database provided by her school, the University of Delaware. “I looked up everyone I knew,” she says.
“It was just interesting to be like, ‘Oh my gosh, I didn't know you're from—your parents own a multimillion dollar house in the Hamptons,’” she says.
Now, as a resident of the notoriously expensive city of Washington, DC, she continues to use the platform as a means of gaining insight into her peers’ financial lives—specifically to answer the question of how they get by considering the city’s high cost of living.
“Years ago I went over to a new friend's apartment, and immediately on my walk home I was looking up how much she probably paid and then doing a little bit of math to be like, ‘Well, if you're paying that much money for rent, what is your salary?’” Williams says. She says she based her calculation on the widely accepted idea that people should spend a maximum of 30 percent of their monthly income on housing.
Salary is just one of the insights she’s gained through extrapolating data from Zillow. “It's kind of an easy way to find out if their family is helping them pay,” she says. And after discovering how much a friend paid in rent, she asked how they manage to pay their bills and learned that they were struggling with significant credit card debt. “I didn't realize that probably more of my friends than I think are in credit card debt specifically, not just student loans but credit card debt, because they're trying to make ends meet, or they're living outside of their means to meet a lifestyle that they want or they expect.”
Vivian Tu, a financial literacy content creator and author known as @yourrichbff on TikTok and Instagram, says young people today are particularly susceptible to spending outside of their budget. “I think a huge part of that is the comparison game. Back in our parents' generation, we had ‘keeping up with the Joneses,’” she says. “For the most part you were looking at your neighbors, and those are people who were relatively within the same tax bracket.”
Social media, she says, has replaced the Joneses with the Kardashians. “All of a sudden you're not comparing yourself to people who are relatively your net-worth equal. You're comparing yourself to everybody on Earth, and you are starting to see levels of insurmountable wealth, like unimaginable wealth, that the vast majority of us will never ever obtain,” says Tu.
This, combined with a lack of mandated financial education and the fact that many young adults feel disenfranchised by the US’s economic system, can make the pursuit of wealth feel like a nonstarter. “Instead of trying to be rich, be wealthier, be financially stable, we're trying to look rich, look wealthy, look financially stable,” she says. “That means you drive a nice car, it means you live in a nice apartment. It means you have nice things to wear, and you're always in a cute new outfit on Instagram.”
The phenomenon of Zillow snooping also feels in line with the current political climate. Today’s young adults came of age in a moment marked by a growing backlash towards income inequality and an unfettered class of billionaires, a sentiment reflected in the popularity of shows like Succession and The White Lotus. Zillow’s public pricing details give people who want to gawk at or mock the rich an opportunity to do just that within their inner circles.
“You try to be pretty objective about it, but I think it inevitably ends up seeping into your perception of someone,” Williams says.
Anna Goldfarb, author of Modern Friendship, says these discoveries can lead people to make assumptions and judgments about their friends’ priorities. “It's really not about money,” Goldfarb, says. “It's the values around money where it can get prickly with friends.”
“One of the biggest reasons friendships fade is the difference in values. So there's a real risk here of looking deeply into finances, because you're sort of putting your friendship on the line, like, ‘Do we share values?’ It's not that explicit, but it's definitely implied that, well, if you know your friend is in debt and makes terrible financial choices, and then you look up her home on Zillow, you're going to make all sorts of judgments about that,” Goldfarb says.
But knowing that a friend appears to be doing well because they’re getting a lot of help can also ease people’s insecurities rather than just stoke them.
Lucia Barker, 25, describes her inclination to look up her friends’ apartments as “a morbid curiosity” but says the habit has quelled her tendency to compare her own financial situation to those of her peers, particularly when it becomes clear a friend’s standard of living is made possible through factors other than their salary—namely, money from their parents. New York Magazine recently reported that nearly half of parents in the US provide financial support to their adult children and that, among American adults under 43, only about one-third support themselves without help from their parents. But despite the fact that parent-subsidized lifestyles have become commonplace, a sense of shame and secrecy surrounding generational wealth persists. “There's such a lack of financial transparency in our world,” Barker says. “It's just helpful to know that other people's lifestyles might be because of some other reason.”
Financial therapist Aja Evans says that since money remains a cultural taboo, people should take their Zillow findings with a grain of salt. “You have no idea if they pulled all of their money from all of their retirement accounts, if somebody helped them, if they borrowed money from a friend or somebody else and then planned on paying them back. There are so many different scenarios,” says Evans. “We don't actually have a clear financial picture of how they were able to make that happen.”
But sometimes the information comes up by happenstance. Those looking for photos of a friend’s new house, for example, are often met with far more information than they asked for. “I love shows like House Hunter and anything on HGTV,” says Andrea Zlotowitz, 35. “So when a friend says, ‘I bought this house, here's the address,’ to be able to see the pictures of the home that they purchased is my first interest,” she says. But regardless of her intentions, she inevitably stumbles upon details of her friend’s financial standing. “I see what they paid for it, and I can see the full price history.”
Most of the people I spoke to agreed: Although many are aware of the availability of this information, it’s generally still taboo to ask someone directly how much their home costs or to bring up the fact that you’ve sought out the answer.
“I recognize that there are some sensitivities talking about money and knowing what people spend on things,” says Zlotowitz. “So it's certainly not something that I would later bring up to a friend, but it lives rent-free in the back of my mind.”
Regardless, some think this behavior is within the bounds of the new social contract brought on by the information age: I can learn anything I want about you, and you can learn anything you want about me—we just won’t talk about it. One person even likened it to vetting people before a first date.
As my sister, a homeowner and avid Zillow user, told me when I mentioned this story, "I expect that everyone who enters my home knows exactly how much I bought it for.”

Rare Fragment of 1,800-Year-Old Roman Soldier’s Purse Found in Czech Republic
Archaeologists in the South Moravia region have uncovered a rare artifact believed to be the oldest of its kind ever found in the Czech Republic—a fragment of a bronze wrist purse once worn by a Roman soldier.
The item, discovered on Hradisko Hill, dates back more than 1,800 years and provides a rare glimpse into daily life on the edge of the Roman Empire.
The purse fragment, likely worn on a soldier’s forearm, would have been used to carry money during military campaigns. Researchers say the object resembles a compact money box that fits snugly around the arm, held closed by its own tension.
This kind of purse, used by Roman soldiers, served both practical and strategic purposes—keeping essential coins close while leaving the dominant hand free during combat.
Discovery site linked to Roman military presence
The discovery was made at the site of a former Roman military camp where the 10th Legion was based during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius.
While only about 30 percent of the original purse remains, its shape and function were quickly recognized by experts familiar with similar Roman military gear. What makes this find exceptional is its location.
Similar items have been found across Roman-controlled territories—from Britain to the Danube—but never before in lands once considered enemy territory.
No coins were found inside the purse, but nearby excavations turned up a large number of silver Roman coins. According to archaeologist Tomáš Antoš, most of these coins date to the rule of Marcus Aurelius and feature images of the emperor or his wife, Faustina.
The coins helped confirm the artifact’s age and placed its use in a specific historical period.
Clues about its owner and usage
Based on the size of the purse and its context, researchers estimate it may have held up to 50 silver denarii. Though this was a sizable amount, it fell short of a full year’s salary for an ordinary soldier.
That suggests the purse may have belonged to a junior officer or someone responsible for managing unit expenses, such as supplies and logistical costs. Archaeologist Balázs Komoróczy described this mix of personal funds and “service cash” as a common practice among mobile troops.
Historical records indicate that the 10th Legion was stationed on Hradisko Hill between 172 and 180 A.D. Emperor Marcus Aurelius aimed to establish a new province, Marcomannia, extending from the Danube River into what is now northern Moravia.
However, the plan was abandoned following continued conflict with the Marcomanni tribe. After the emperor’s death, his son Commodus ordered a Roman withdrawal from the region.
Today, the bronze fragment is on public display at the Mušov Visitor Centre in Pasohlávky as part of the Gateway to the Roman Empire exhibition. The display features the original item, a full reconstruction of the Roman soldier’s wrist purse, and several coins found nearby.
Together, the objects shed light on the financial routines and daily experiences of Roman troops stationed far from the empire’s core

The Food and Drug Administration on Friday approved the first at-home test to screen for cervical cancer, Teal Health, which makes the test kit, said.
Currently, cervical cancer screening is done in a doctor’s office during a pelvic exam, a process some women find uncomfortable and even painful.
Some patients don’t get screened for cervical cancer because they don’t want a pelvic exam, said Dr. Emeline Aviki, a gynecologic-oncologist at NYU Langone Health.
“It’s not a fun exam and it’s the easiest thing to cancel,” said Aviki, who worked on some of the early studies to validate the new test.
Cervical cancer is considered highly preventable, thanks to screenings and the HPV vaccine. Rates of the disease have plummeted since the 1970s, according to a 2025 report from the American Cancer Society, though they have begun to level off in recent years. The report estimated that this year, 13,360 women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer and about 4,320 women will die.
However, the number of women getting screened has fallen since the mid-2000s. A 2022 study found that 23% of women were behind on their cervical cancer screening in 2019, up from 14% in 2005. Up to half of women diagnosed with cervical cancer in the U.S. weren’t up to date on their screenings, the American Cancer Society says.
“Cervical cancer screening in general is something that saves lives,” said Dr. Jessica Kiley, chief of general obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago.
The new test, called the Teal Wand, detects HPV using a vaginal swab, making it less invasive than a pap smear, in which the gynecologist inserts a speculum and collects samples of cells from the cervix.
HPV, or human papillomavirus, is a sexually transmitted infection and the leading cause of cervical cancer. There’s no treatment for HPV, but most cases clear on their own. Several strains, however, are linked to cervical cancer.
The Teal Wand is not the first HPV test that uses a vaginal sample: Last year, the FDA approved a similar swab, also performed by patients themselves, that’s collected in a doctor’s office.
“What’s different about this new indication is that this sample can be collected at home and not in a medical setting,” said Dr. George Sawaya, a gynecologist at UCSF Health. “You have to logically believe that would increase access if people’s main barrier was getting to a medical setting.”
A recent report in JAMA Network Open found that women in rural areas are 25% more likely to be diagnosed with cervical cancer and 42% more likely to die from the disease than women who live in cities, a trend that likely reflects lower access to screenings and care in rural parts of the country.
Patients will be able to order the test kit after a telehealth appointment with a doctor and then collect the sample themselves at home. For now, the product will have to be prescribed by one of Teal Health’s virtual providers, but the company plans to make it available for other doctors to order as well. The swab is then mailed to a lab for analysis.
Teal Health said if the result is positive, its providers will help arrange for further care. Following a positive test, women may need additional tests in a doctor’s office.
Still, experts want more information on the cost of the test, and whether patients will follow up if they need more testing.
“Those are some of the uncertainties around it,” Sawaya said.
Kara Egan, the CEO of Teal Health, did not say how much the test would cost.
However, she said, because cervical cancer screening is endorsed by a government group called the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, the company is anticipating the test will be covered by insurance and expects to know definitively in the coming months. In December, the task force recommended in-office self-swabs.
Kiley, the gynecologist from Northwestern, said it’s still important that women see a gynecologist regularly. An annual exam covers more than just cervical cancer screening, she said.

The New Yorker :: @NewYorker [An advance look at Barry Blitt’s “Left to Their Own Devices,” the cover for next week’s issue.]
* * * *
LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
March 28, 2025
Heather Cox Richardson
Mar 29, 2025
“Another wipeout walloped Wall Street Friday,” Stan Choe of the Associated Press wrote today. The S&P 500 had one of its worst days in two years, dropping 2%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 715 points, losing 1.7% of its value. The Nasdaq Composite fell 2.7%. On Tuesday, news dropped that the administration’s blanket firings and wildly shifting tariff policies have dropped consumer confidence to a low it has not hit since January 2021. Today’s stock market tumble started after the Commerce Department released data showing that consumer prices are rising faster than economists expected.
AIG chief international economist James Knightley said: “We are moving in the wrong direction and the concern is that tariffs threaten higher prices, which means the inflation prints are going to remain hot.” Business leaders like lower interest rates, which reduce borrowing costs and make it cheaper to finance business initiatives, but with rising inflation, the Federal Reserve will be less likely to cut interest rates.
Makena Kelly of Wired reported today that billionaire Elon Musk’s “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) is planning to move the computer system of the Social Security Administration (SSA) off the old programming language it uses, COBOL, to a new system. In 2017, the SSA estimated that such a migration would take about five years. DOGE is planning for the migration to take just a few months, using artificial intelligence to complete the change.
Experts have expressed concern. Dan Hon, who runs a technology strategy company that helps the government modernize its services, told Kelly: “If you weren’t worried about a whole bunch of people not getting benefits or getting the wrong benefits, or getting the wrong entitlements, or having to wait ages, then sure go ahead.” More than 65 million Americans currently receive Social Security benefits. Today Representative Don Beyer (D-VA) recorded himself calling the SSA and being told by a recording that the wait times were more than two hours and that he should call back. And then the system hung up on him.
Musk told the Fox News Channel today that he plans to step down from DOGE in May, apparently at the end of the 130-day cap for the “special government employee” designation that enables him to avoid financial disclosures. In February, White House staffers suggested Musk would stay despite the limit.
Today the State Department told Congress it is shutting down the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) altogether by July 1. Whatever agency functions the administration approves will move into the State Department. Founded by President John F. Kennedy and enjoying bipartisan support, USAID administers programs for global health, disaster relief, long-term economic development, education, environmental protection, and democracy. It is widely perceived to be a key element of U.S. “soft power.”
USAID was created by Congress, and its funds are appropriated by Congress. Congress and the courts have established that the executive branch—the branch of government overseen by the president—cannot kill an agency Congress has created and cannot withhold appropriations Congress has made. The authors of Project 2025 want to challenge that principle and consolidate government power in the hands of the president. It appears they have chosen USAID as the test case.
As Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. shatters science and health agencies, the nation’s top vaccine regulator, Dr. Peter Marks, submitted his resignation today after being given the choice to resign or be fired. Dan Diamond of the Washington Post noted that Marks has been at the Food and Drug Administration since 2012 and has been at the head of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research since 2016.
In his resignation letter, Diamond says, Marks expressed his deep concern over the ongoing measles outbreak in the Southwest—now more than 450 cases—and warned that the outbreak “reminds us of what happens when confidence in well-established science underlying public health and well-being is undermined.” Marks said that although he was willing to work with Kennedy on his plan to review vaccine safety, “it has become clear that truth and transparency are not desired by the Secretary, but rather he wishes subservient confirmation of his misinformation and lies.”
On Tuesday, news broke that Kennedy has tapped anti-vaccine activist David Geier to lead a study looking to link autism to vaccines, although that alleged link has been heavily studied and thoroughly debunked. Infectious disease journalist Helen Branswell notes that Geier does not have a medical degree and was disciplined in Maryland for practicing medicine without a license.
British investigative journalist Brian Deer, who has written about the hoax that vaccines cause autism, told Branswell: “If you want an independent source,… [you] wouldn’t go to somebody with no qualifications and a long track record of impropriety and incompetence.” But, he said, “[i]f you wanted to get in anybody off the street who would come up with the result that Kennedy would like to see, this would be your man.”
Tara Copp of the Associated Press reported today that Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has done some targeted staffing, too. His younger brother Phil Hegseth is traveling to the Indo-Pacific with the secretary in his role at the Pentagon as a liaison and senior advisor to the Department of Homeland Security. Hegseth also employed his brother when he ran the nonprofit Concerned Veterans for America, where the younger Hegseth’s salary was $108,000 for his media work. Copp notes that a 1967 law “prohibits government officials from hiring, promoting or recommending relatives to any civilian position over which they exercise control.”
Hegseth and his colleagues are still in the hot seat for uploading the military’s attack plans against the Houthis in Yemen to Signal, an unsecure commercially available messaging app. Yesterday, Nancy A. Youssef, Alexander Ward, and Michael R. Gordon of the Wall Street Journal reported that National Security Advisor Mike Waltz identified a Houthi missile expert whose identity Israel had provided from a human source in Yemen, angering Israeli officials.
Americans, especially those with ties to the military, aren’t happy either. Military, the leading news website for service members, veterans, and their families, titled a story about the scandal “‘Different spanks for different ranks’: Hegseth’s Signal scandal would put regular troops in the brig.” Helene Cooper and Eric Schmitt of the New York Times reported that the story had “angered and bewildered” fighter pilots, who say “they can no longer be certain that the Pentagon is focused on their safety when they strap into cockpits.”
At a raucous town hall held today by Republican representative Victoria Spartz (R-IN), the crowd booed Spartz loudly when she said she would not call for the resignations of Waltz, Hegseth, and the rest of the people on the group chat.
All the mayhem created by the administration has created enough backlash that the White House appears concerned about upcoming special elections on April 1. One is for the seat in Florida’s District 6 that Waltz vacated when he became national security advisor. In 2024, Trump won that district by 30 points, and Republicans considered their candidate, state senator Randy Fine, whom Trump has strongly endorsed, to be such a shoo-in that he barely campaigned. His website features pictures of him with Trump but has only bullet points to explain his stand on issues.
Democrat Josh Weil, a middle-school math teacher who has outraised Fine by almost 10 to one, is polling within the margin of error for a victory in a contest where even a 10- to 15-point loss would show a dramatic collapse in Republican support. Weil has tied Fine to Musk’s unpopular DOGE and to the president, as well as to cuts to Social Security and Medicaid.
Trump is now personally campaigning for Fine and for the Republican candidate to fill the seat vacated by former representative Matt Gaetz in Florida District 1. There, Democratic candidate Gay Valimont is running against Republican Jimmy Patronis in a district that elected Trump with about 68% of the vote. Like Fine, Patronis is strongly backed by Trump and wants more cuts to the federal government; Gay is a former state leader for Moms Demand Action and focuses on healthcare and veterans’ services. She has criticized DOGE’s cuts to VA hospitals. Like Weil, she has significantly outraised her opponent.
Republicans are concerned enough about holding the seats that billionaire Elon Musk, who poured more than $291 million into the 2024 election to help Republicans, has begun to contribute to Republicans in Florida. On Tuesday he spent more than $10,000 apiece for texting services for the Florida candidates.
Musk has contributed far more than that—more than $20 million—to the April 1 election for a ten-year seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Trump loyalist Brad Schimel is running against circuit court judge Susan Crawford in a contest that has national significance. Wisconsin is evenly split between the parties, but when Republicans control the legislature and the supreme court, they suppress voting and heavily gerrymander the state in their favor. When liberals hold the majority on the court, they ease election rules and uphold fair maps. Currently, the state gerrymander gives Republicans 75% of the state’s seats in the U.S. House of Representatives although voting in 2024 was virtually dead even. The makeup of the court could well determine the congressional districts of Wisconsin through 2041, through the redistricting that will take place after the 2030 census.
Musk has told voters that if Crawford wins, “then the Democrats will attempt to redraw the districts and cause Wisconsin to lose two Republican seats.” Not only has Musk said he is going to Wisconsin to speak before the election, but also he is handing out checks to voters who sign a petition against “activist judges,” a suggestion that it would not be fair to unskew the Republican gerrymander. Last night, Musk advertised a contest that would award two voters a million dollars each, with the condition that the winners had to have already voted.
This morning, Wisconsin Democrats issued a press release noting that Musk had “committed a blatant felony,” directly violating the Wisconsin law that prohibits offering anyone anything worth more than $1 to get them to “vote or refrain from voting.” Wisconsin Democratic Party chair Ben Wikler said that if Schimel “does not immediately call on Musk to end this criminal activity, we can only assume he is complicit.”
Musk deleted the tweet and then, eliminating the language that said people had to have voted, posted that he would give the checks to spokespeople for his petition. Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul sued to stop Musk “from any further promotion of the million-dollar gifts” and “from making any payments to Wisconsin electors to vote.” “The Wisconsin Department of Justice is committed to ensuring that elections in Wisconsin are safe, secure, free, and fair,” Kaul said in a statement. “We are aware of the offer recently posted by Elon Musk to award a million dollars to two people at an event in Wisconsin this weekend. Based on our understanding of applicable Wisconsin law, we intend to take legal action today to seek a court order to stop this from happening.”
MeidasTouch reposted Musk’s offer to “personally hand over two checks for a million dollars each in appreciation for you taking the time to vote” and noted: “No matter what side of the aisle you are on, you should be appalled that a billionaire thinks he has the right to buy elections like this.” Former chair of the Ohio Democratic Party David Pepper posted: “Have some pride, America. We are so much better than this guy thinks we are.”
