Hey there! This trend seemed kinda fun so what is acotar propaganda you are never falling for?

1. That I have to like the main characters/ the IC if I read ACOTAR (and listen I still like, enjoy…some aspects of them but I also hate the rest haha BUT I have the ability to be mature and discuss them and write them with nuance) I think critiquing is a fun and essential part of reading and if you hate when people criticize your fav characters and even worse, insult them? Like bro chill

2. That Lucien is bad, ugly, inconsiderate, etc etc

3. That Gwynriel’s book is next (Elucien’s book is next yalllllllll)

4. Hating on Tamlin, calling him Tampon (I swear to god that insult is so stupid), and most importantly hating on the people who like Tamlin. You do not have to like Tamlin and I know many people who see their personal experiences with abuse in Tamlin and Feyre, but please don’t project your personal experiences onto others

5. Azriel is a dom (this is a joke because I like him as a top and I think he’s vers lmao but I loveeeeee him as a sub so much more)

6. That Nesta is a toxic abuser (for the love of godddddd yall she said Feyre was stinky I have said way worse to my little sister please)

7. That Elain is a toxic manipulator coward sexy lamp insert-other-terms-Elain-haters-so-often-say. I am fine with someone thinking she’s boring. Fine. We don’t have to like the same kinds of characters. But some of yall are so crazy about her in a bad way lmao

I could say more lmao but it’s mostly me getting annoyed with people throwing around words like abuser and toxic and pedo and incest and stuff like that and throwing that stuff at real people, not just fictional characters

Hey, can we not bring real world politics into our fandom? Like, not as a dividing factor at least? Like it's fine to bring it up in our analysis of the source material, but to cut each other out over "this user is on the wrong side of the political isle" is kinda shallow. We can agree to disagree. We can hold dramatically opposing views on real world things and still come together over love of this wonderful children's franchise. Based off the demographic overlap, there are probably a ton of ppl in this fandom who want me and everyone of my ethnicity dead (i know of at least a few), but you don't see me cutting off friendships and blocking people over it. Each side of the political isle is an umbrella term that encompasses a large variety of beliefs anyway. Just because you know what side someone is on doesn't mean you know who they do or don't hate, or if they hate anyone at all. You may have valid reasons to not want to associate with extremists of the other side, but most people on both sides are not extremists.

I hope we can all take a lesson from this episode:

The shipwar is because of the fucking fans and not because of SJM. Yall are just crazy. Theorize all you want, love a ship all you want, but stop attacking people, stop demanding shit. There are plenty of other fanbases who act normal when waiting for the next installment of whatever they’re fans of. Authors being silent between books is fucking normal so stop looking to them to solve the problems FANS fucking made because of their obsession with fictional characters.

You shouldn't need the publishers and SJM to baby you because you're obsessed with a ship so much that you'll battle to the death over it. LEARN SOME SELF-SOOTHING TACTICS, GO ACTUALLY ENJOY YOURSELF AND STOP DEPENDING ON CANON STUFF TO HAVE A GOOD TIME! You want the fanbase to be less toxic? Be less toxic. Stop engaging in the hate and the need to prove the other side wrong. Block people. Focus on what you love. Read a smutty non-canonical fic of your fav ship. Talk about your headcanons. THAT is how you solve your issues with the fanbase. SJM certainly isn’t going to solve it, and tbh even her announcing the next couple isn’t going to solve shit because you guys ARE STILL GOING TO GO CRAZY and hate on her and other people!

can i be honest and true. i do wish ppl paid more attention to cq's brownness and how that textually plays into the way he's treated and viewed by the majority white cast. despite how many examples there are, i'll focus on two of the biggest ones: cdrm is Extremely Ghoulishly Racist to charas like mex dream and cwilbur canonically does racist loaded digs to cq and rejects him frm lmanburg for being mexican specifically. even if cwil didnt mean the latter some type of way, it's still smthing cq is Actually Very Hurt By and he says as such. like. cq is capital m spanish is his first language deeply in touch and proud of his culture cowboy outfit spanish music mexican masculinity beliefs hard work ethic make a name for yourself si sé ass MEXICAN. it's a massive glaring issue i see all the time of ppl being unwilling to engage w what that means for his story arc

I think the Acotar fandom is one of the oddest ones I’ve seen. AI being used in place of art being so normalized and the bullying of real artists off the app?? I think I should just start freely expressing what I want to say on here but I honestly really hate Caitvi fans. I find them really insufferable. Their fanbase is so immensely toxic and they ruined the fandom for me tbh. Most of their fanbase is not normal about shipping at all and they say disgusting things about the politics of the show because they watch Arcane with a shipping brain. Season 2 made some questionable writing choices with Caitvi, writers treated Vi like trash, but instead of having a mature conversation you’ve dedicated yourselves since November to harass people EVEN if the criticism of season 2 is not about Vi and Caitlyn’s relationship.

hot take but people treating tommy like he’s in the wrong for, like, being a victim of abusive actions and Literal Crimes (like, objectively, I don’t want to put words in Tommys mouth or define it for him but Dream's acting in a textbook abusive way rn and “sharing pornography with minors” is literally csa legally) is in large part bc of the normalisation of excusing abusive action in a fictional context here specifically. dream is right in saying c!dream influenced how people reacted to this, but it’s not with inniters- it’s with people using the Exact Same Arguments they used to defend c!Dream’s abuse when actual worse shit turned out to have happened to an actual irl sixteen year old.

It’s because this fanbase does not treat artists right. At all. There is a sense of judgement that all artists feel whenever they post their art, but so many of their fears come true in this fanbase. No one understands that there are ARTISTS behind the screen. Real PEOPLE. They feel entitled, they feel like every piece of fanart is for them, when it’s not. They feel the need to point out little flaws or inaccuracies: “why is the castle not made of glass?” “Manon looks is ugly why did you draw her like that?” “The stag is supposed to be white” “This character’s skin is too dark” “this isn’t canon accurate, that character would never kiss this character”. And I see comments like that on professional artists’ pages where you can buy the art as dust jackets and posters, but i also see it on posts where the artist is new and doing this for free. In March, 4 big artists LEFT the entire fanbase because of the hate they got. Fairyloot got “critiques” on their TOG dust jackets to the point where they made changes and made a post saying the hate their artists unacceptable.

If an artist draws a scene or a character in a way that isn’t canon or it’s just something you don’t like; if they draw a ship you don’t like, a ship that isn’t canon, if they depict a character in a certain way that’s not exactly how you pictured it. If you don’t like their style, if you don’t like the character they drew, if they aren’t posting art of a character you like, then just scroll past. Not everything is for you, not every piece of art is catered to you.

I have literally seen people comment death threats on the artist’s post, death threats because it’s a character they hate, and every person who likes this character is horrible, or it’s a ship they don’t like. That’s how crazy this gets sometimes.

And this is a big issue for a lot of reasons: there’s a sense of entitlement in this fanbase, that everything is catered to you, which isn’t true. That artists are these perfect machines with no feelings. That drawing a character or a ship is automatically a statement or something. And I really think the ship war is a huge issue with this on both sides, but also just this fanbase’s obsession with canon and not allowing other opinions besides their own.

Some of these people do make a living off of their work. They get commissioned by companies. This is their full-time job. And some of these artists do this on the side, a lot the times for free, which is more common in fanbases, because they’re fans getting inspired by what they love. But those fans feel more and more afraid to share their work.

Support artists, including small artist! Stop treating them as commodities or machines, or a business opportunity. Fanbases are not a business you can run. Because I think that’s another issue with this fanbase where commissions are almost treated as an investment, instead of making something you enjoy.

Edit to add to this: I have never seen a commission culture in the ACOTAR fanbase’s. Commissions are sooooo popular, and it’s great to support artists but I have seen takes where it’s like the amount of commissions is treated like a competition or an investment, as if it is justifying their favorite ship because the appreciation week has a lot of fanarts. People literally get mad when one side of the shipwar uses a specific artist they like, or “nope don’t use that artist, they support this ship!” It’s so bizarre. And this definitely contributes to the artist hate too. And the artists who do it for free are so small and are left in the dirt.

A fanbase is not a business. It’s for fans who want to create stuff for the things they love and are inspired by.

I will probably go down now as the person who hates that artists are getting paid for their work to do commissions and I just want to repeat that this is not at all what I think.

I love seeing artists getting paid. In times of AI it's even more important that people still value actual artists. Please do commission artists with your ideas if you cannot possibly draw them yourself!

What I find a little weird is the amount of commissions at Acotar character events. Why aren't more artists participating for fun, because they want to? Like in any other fandom?? I definitely think the rather hostile environment in the Acotar sphere is not helping at all. It makes people not want to participate and share their stuff.

I obviously also don't mean that every artist is required to make art for free for every character event. Just that originally fandom is about participating FOR FUN. I don't want people to feel they have to spend a lot of money to contribute to character events either.

But maybe a bit of self-reflection or awareness in the fanbase? I know this side of the fanbase has a large demographic that skews younger, but that doesn't mean that these thoughts and ideas shouldn't be corrected.

In fact, I think something like that is important so it could be unlearned earlier but what do I know.

At least I'm calling out sexism 'cause one of my previous fanbases had to constantly call out racism 💀 and yes some of those racism do come from younger fans and people who were around my age at that time.

Why is this fanbase so obsessed with canon? You know FANFICTION has two words in it: FAN and FICTION! The beauty of fanbases is the fans can take the original concept and make it into something else based on headcanons and vibes and tropes they enjoy. And it’s so beautiful because there’s an infinite amount of possibilities, and people can find a community that shares the same ideas. FANBASES, and a collective group of shippers.

No, Tamberon, Tamlain, Nyxlin, Neris, etc are fanon ships. But they aren’t going to hurt you, babe. Don’t like them? Don’t interact 🤷‍♀️

I guess my thing is like, it’s not a simple as a single option. To many, shipping is a visceral reaction to seeing two characters. It may be because of personal preferences and interests in specific tropes / dynamics, etc but it’s just a feeling most people get. Has nothing to do with canon or if the characters even interacted together. And that visceral, warm fuzzy feeling is an essential part of the fanbase community and how shipping works in general.

I can never understand this fanbase’s obsession with canon. I understand there is the literary analysis aspect where we are all trying to figure out what SJM is doing, but I know that I personally am not basing my love for Elucien on what SJM is intending. I am excited for the future and I do expect Elucien to happen but if it doesn’t, I will still have that warm fuzzy feeling I always had with Elucien.
