There was one thing Clarice Starling had to do before she went to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter at Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. Crawford had said it would be a good idea to talk to Will Graham--the agent that caught the doctor--before she embarked upon the asylum (and, if she could, enlisting his help on catching Buffalo Bill would be excellent).

And with that, she high-tailed it off to Wolf Trap, Virginia.

When Clarice rattled up in her clunky old car, she looked upon a pretty farmhouse with a snow-covered lawn littered with dog footprints of various sizes. She climbed out of the car and slammed the door shut, still gazing at the house. Finally she made her way up the driveway and up to the porch.

She gave the doorbell a ring and could hear it echo inside, followed by the excited barks of dogs. While she waited, she tried to estimate how many dogs Graham had--she figured she could guess by counting how many of the barks sounded different. Four, maybe? It was actually pretty hard to tell. It sounded like more.

She could feel her cheeks turning pink as the chilly air bit at her face. She considered ringing the doorbell again, but figured it would be best not to seem impatient.

Just as she had settled down for the day, an unexpected knock could be heard at her door. She stood with every intention of answering the door.

"Hello," she greeted.
