I’m not going to go into the nitty-gritty of how Pillowfort functions, because others have talked about that and explained it much better than I can (I recommend reading @/vergesm’s post here for a more general Pillowfort overview). What I’m going to do is explain what I, personally, get out of Pillowfort and why I enjoy it.

To preface, I’m not being paid to make this post or promote Pillowfort or anything. I wouldn’t think that needs to be said, but people make things up sometimes so idk. I’m writing pro-Pillowfort propaganda because I genuinely like the place and want to see it thrive. If you want to take a look at my own fort and get a feel for the place, you can do so here.

So with that out of the way – let’s talk about it!

Pillowfort is quite a bit like Tumblr, in that it’s a blogging platform, but it’s got a few things that make it better than this hellsite imo. For one thing, you can post NSFW content there. Although I don’t draw much explicit stuff, it’s nice to be able to post art there without worrying I’ll get shadowbanned for a picture that’s just a lil too suggestive. It's nice to know that the option is there. Honestly, it’s freeing not to have to worry about that shit. And it’s also really cool that there’s a built-in system for marking certain posts as NSFW, because as well as being able to mark your own posts as NSFW, you can choose whether you want to see other people's posts marked as NSFW. And for minors, the ability to see NSFW content is automatically turned off. Pillowfort’s got a really good system for both allowing NSFW content and keeping it away from people who don’t want to see it. I really like that flexibility, and how that flexibility isn't detrimental to the users.

And speaking of being able to see or not see certain content, the content filtering is pretty solid. You’re able to block tags and even words in the body of a post, and like I said, you can control whether you want to see posts marked as NSFW. You can even control who sees your own posts! There’s blocking users, of course, but you can limit who sees your own posts even further than that. You can make them visible to anyone, visible only to logged in Pillowfort users, visible only to your followers or mutuals, or hell, even visible to you alone!! It’s cool to have that level of control, and I find it reassuring to know I have those options.

Another big appeal of Pillowfort, for me, is the userbase’s strong “don’t like don’t read” policy. A lot of the people there operate under the mindset of “as long as it’s fictional, whatever dude. I don’t have to like it, but you do you." There are still dipshits, of course, but it’s WAY better than the insane purity culture that’s developed here. I don’t have to worry about some wannabe-conservatives telling me I’m just as bad as Ted Bundy for [checks notes] sexualizing Michael Myers or some shit. Plus, this general userbase mindset is backed up by actual site policy! I’ve heard that Pillowfort is very swift in responding to reports of harassment – whether it’s fandom-based harassment or bigotry. I haven’t had any experience with this personally (and hopefully it’ll stay that way), but I’ve heard good things about it, and it makes me feel more comfortable being there.

Also, did I mention Pillowfort has an explicit anti-AI policy? AI generated images and writing are banned on the website, and staff made this decision once its userbase and community made it clear that they wouldn’t welcome that sort of shit. And GOD, does it make me feel so fucking good as a writer and artist to know that.

And that’s another thing – Pillowfort staff actually fucking listens to its userbase. The website is crowd-funded and relies on subscriptions and monthly donations to keep things running. And because it relies on its community, it relies on keeping the community happy. So complaints, bug reports, suggestions and alterations and things the users would like to see on the site – it’s all taken pretty seriously. And again, it’s just really nice to know that the staff of the place actually give a shit and are looking out for its community rather than trying to suck the dick of the biggest investor.

Really, the only problem I have with Pillowfort is the fact that it’s a bit small. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, because the people there are lovely. But since a lot of people aren’t happy with Tumblr, and haven’t been happy with Tumblr for some time, I thought I’d just ask you guys – maybe consider it. Consider making a Pillowfort account. Consider making your own little fort, stringing up some colored lights and cool art and making yourself cozy. Consider offering some money, if you can spare it, because it’s genuinely a really cool place that I want to spend more time in and see prosper.

So far, I’ve had a lovely time there. It’s cozy and friendly and it feels like one of the few places where a queer artist like me is actually welcome. And I think a lot of Tumblr users might really like it too.

“That sounds nice.” You hum, shifting slightly in Eric’s lap, “Carry me?”

Eric giggles quietly, “Okay.”

By the time you’re all cleaned up and comfy in bed together you can feel the tension enter Eric’s body again. You shift between your girlfriend and Eric, Hyunjoon spooning you from behind while you have your head pillowed against Eric’s chest.

“What’s wrong?”

“Um…” Eric starts, “You’re dating each other right…?”

Hyunjoon hums, reaching over to put a hand over Eric’s gently rubbing his knuckles, “Yeah, we are… is that okay?”

Eric nods carefully, “Yeah… but what does that mean here?”

“What do you want it to mean?” You ask sleepily.

Eric shifts slightly uncomfortably, “You’re celebrities… I don’t want you to risk anything for a– I’m just a fan I could never ask you to… I don’t know…”

Hyunjoon sits up, unbothered by her less-than-dressed state, and leans over you to kiss Eric’s cheek, “Hand me your phone, Eric.” Cautiously, he hands her his phone, ignoring the copious amounts of texts from the other boys, “There’s our numbers, I already made a group chat. Just rest and we’ll keep in contact, okay?”

“Now sleep, rest while you can. I assume you’re following us to the other stops, right?”

Eric gets comfy again and snuggles close, “Yeah, we, my friends and I are flying out in the morning…”

“So you really should sleep,” Hyunjoon giggles.

“Go to sleep.” You smile softly, kissing his jaw, “Goodnight, Eric.”

“Good night, girls.”

ooft, okay. there's probably more than this but the following have major character death warnings that could very well be classed as angsty lmao:

i wrote this little ficlet: Gone (SVU, bensler/EO) in which a raid goes wrong and it's just pain from start to finish and then there's Until Long After She Takes Her Final Breath which is a Good Girls/brio fic in which their reunion at the beginning of season 3 goes very differently.

Why don't we go to Venus? is another Good Girls/brio fic in which the summary is: Rio killed her and that was supposed to be the end of it but Beth doesn’t seem to be done with him quite yet.

that one is probably my angstiest overall but the ending is probably the least angsty bit about it??? haha

8. Do you get hate on fics?

there was someone going around the SVU/OC fandom leaving weird hate comments on people's stuff (anonymously) and i got one but while it felt rude, it didn't feel like hate, but also it felt like it was supposed to be hateful, y'know? pretty sure i just deleted it though (i for sure ignored it) 😂

but generally, no. i'm lucky to say that i tend to avoid hate on social media and that includes fanfiction.

i have done! beyond the obvious (where shows, etc share worlds), i did a boondock saints/the walking dead one (which was also co-written) because norman reedus stars in both 😂

yes! the aforemention boondock saints/the walking dead fic was co-written on ff.net and i co-wrote (with the same person), a fast and furious fic.

i lost myself a ton in writing olivia/elliot from svu/organized crime as well as beth/rio from good girls so they'd probably battle it out for top spot.

BUT

if i'm being brutally honest, my all time favourite ever to write were fast and furious ships 😂 especially the OGs (specifically vince and leon) with my OCs (although there were canon ships i loved to write too!). it was just so fun and freeing and i constantly think about it.

(i also loved when i wrote random marvel/mcu pairings, winterwitch was probably my number one for them and again, i think about it a lot)

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

i think it's unlikely i'll finish a lot but especially a degree of separation. i kind of hate it, i'm so sorry 😭😭😭

the thought of analysing my own writing right now sounds painful but two of the most common nice things people tell me is that: 1) they like how i write dialogue and 2) they like my writing style in general

Lands Matter Commentary: All's Realm that Ends Realm

We're going into Prerelease weekend, and I'm going to be juggling judge duties, card pricing, mechanical questions, and making sure that everyone logs into Companion. So it's nice in the end to sit down for a few hours and pretend that I could ever get these done ahead of time and/or on time for once. But that combination of duties...doesn't every color have a duty to itself? It's when the landscape of those duties changes that the really weird stuff comes about.

What a forced metaphor! Anyway, strengths. The variety of cards this week was pretty much what I expected, and I'm really happy that folks took it upon themselves to examine the specific angles and to really dig into the fun of what colors might want to do together. There were a lot of scaling effects that I noticed partway through, cards that cared about numbers of other cards, and it's a curious consideration: when is that good enough in limited to make a difference? What number might you be looking at? I think when examining these cards it's important to see the realistic potential, and there's a lot of potential here.

In terms of design choices I feel we should keep in mind, color pie bends/breaks weren't actually too bad this week, although there was potential for a couple cards to do things that their colors really aren't supposed to do. As far as context and flavor goes, though, we saw a lot of variety in how people depicted their stories. And that's awesome! Lands matter, and what lands do matters, and feel free to read on about my thoughts on them.

I had to limit myself to four JUDGE PICKS this week, which if you're new here are cards that I wanted to highlight for one specific reason or another. Check 'em out.

@bergdg — Drown

Jeez, that flavor text is dark even for me. But I do recall the art from Shadowmoor's merrow creeps, and that does fit the bill, so good for you there! And with that mood comes a mechanical introduction of graveyard removal, and I think that that's a pretty good card as-is even without a strict adherence to graveyard-themed sets/mechanics. I'm reminded a little bit of Go Blank in a good way. I think the "then" clause could be its own sentence, although I'm curious about intention. Is this card designed so that you may, but don't have to, exile the creature that died this way? The shortcut would be to have it just exile the creature as it is. That's not what this card feels like, though; graveyards are where drowning things go, I'm with you there.

Islands and exile don't necessarily go hand-in-hand, but you make it work on the world of Shadowmoor, because of the strong association with the merfolk of that plane. The vibe of this card allows for the mechanics to do what they're supposed to do, and honestly, that's the kind of strength I was hoping to see from some of these cards. A strong one-word removal name on a strong limited removal spell is pretty rare to see these days (IMO, anyway, I haven't checked the list of tagged one-word name cards in a while). There's mostly just polishing that I would do, like the consideration of wording-to-exile and a slight focus with the flavor text. I would've liked to perhaps see Sygg talk about the difference in land/water dwellers? Their faces, distorted by the water or something? It's still good, don't get me wrong, but perhaps pushes a little too darkly. Or maybe I'm just sensitive this morning, I dunno.

@bread-into-toast — Circling Scavengers (JUDGE PICK)

Vultures are underrated in MTG. Tarkir has its rocs, and I remember when that stupid bird took over Standard for a while before being relegated to a bulk rare... Anyway. I feel that the wording of this card is as good as it can be, and maybe I shouldn't try to improve it. I was thinking of "if you do/if you don't" wording, things to make it clearer, but MTG's wording isn't quite where I would be able to get it there, I don't think. The way I'd explain it to a new player would be to put it on ANY creature if you have a Plains, and then by playing with it they'd see how strong this card is. Seriously good limited work here, BTW, and I think people would underestimate just how strong it is in any B/X shell. Great warrior typing too. I know I talked a lot about wording changes but that's just because this card groks quite well!

Let's try to justify the flavor, because I'm working through it in my head, and I'm not quite there yet, I don't think. My first thought is that Plains are representative of white's philosophy, where there's a sense of togetherness in the Mardu/Abzan side of things. They both overlapped warrior kindred, right? That was cool. And it's like, if you're Sultai, then you've got more of a selfish side or you have to look out for yourself, something like that—that's more of an implication, though. What about the geography? What do physical plains have to do with sharing? I do want to say: flavor text is pretty great. Still isn't something I could explain 100% as it relates to intended top-down design, but I love the concision. I think I like this card enough to ask for that last little push from you and put it up here. I believe there's something I'm personally missing vulture-wise from your intentions. Updrafts? Easily-spotted carcasses? Or did I have it right with the family things? Fantastic card either way.

@corporalotherbear — Lost in the Wilderness

Lost in the Woods was the first card that came to mind, and the second was Unexpectedly Absent. Let's break down the other stuff first, because compared to cards that put nonland permanents on top of their owners' libraries, I felt that this card might be okay at 3U, but 2UU is probably right for early-game nonsense. Considering that splashing isn't a guarantee, the cost for limited is definitely something to consider, and ultimately you made the right call. I wonder about the tuck wording, because Unexpectedly Absent seems cleaner, but this technically isn't incorrect. Well, except for when you put "amount" instead of "number," but that's minor. In terms of GU limited removal, this card's probably totally fine. I do like disrupting someone's draws for sure, and tucking is great for not-technically-killing.

The whole flavor is probably something that I can give a thumbs-up to, although it's pretty standard for the tropes already present. I think if anything, I'd like to have seen a flavorful reason for these colors of mana coming together. On what world would it feel really great to have green and blue together like this? Is this rainforest-y, more of the deep Innistradian woods, something like that? In the grand scheme of things, this card is a bottom-up limited splash card that happens to work best in a GU shell and encourages as such, and I shouldn't judge too harshly when the mechanical idea clearly is taking precedent. If it's not, well, that's egg on my face. Last question: do you think it would be reasonable to also hit planeswalkers? I feel with a double-blue pip that there could be a little more oomph than just hitting a creature. Up to you, though.

@dabudder — Stack of Kindling

Heh. Old habits die hard; for formatting, the first name should be "This artifact" and instances of "this permanent" should also be "this artifact" IIRC. Formatting changes aside (trust me, I'm not the biggest fan of how they did it), I think that there are some things to consider. For boardwipes, I'm wary about this at uncommon, and certainly the activation cost, but I also know that Gates Ablaze was a card and I guess I can be a little more lenient there. I do like Pyroclasm effects even if I'm not the best at using them myself. Great choice to have it be during the turn, but NOT as a sorcery, love that. This is a pretty cool take, with a whole bonfire feeling, and the representation on Eldraine feels pretty sensible to me. Or at least, I can explain the justification of fires in the woods as part of a fairytale vignette.

There's a lot to unpack with how it's coming together. So, this card could've gone without flavor text for how much text is already here, and I feel that it kinda should have. There's some intentional/unintentional humor there if so, and I think that the flavor text is trying a little too hard to give an ironic edge to the characters' mood; it reads somewhat directly to the joke. In my opinion, the audience already understands the dramatic irony between kindling as a source of warmth and the card's effect at burning everything down. What I'm really wanting to communicate is that your card fulfills your intentions already in a strong way! I want to think I'm picking up on the flavor's intent, but it becomes unnecessary when your card's already got that going for it. Does that make sense?

@dimestoretajic — Seabound Ricochet

I'm picking up what you're putting down for the mechanical side of things. I think. It's a semi-blink effect, but with a Fling on it, or perhaps more of a Fling/blink effect combo. Major props to you because, in concept, I love what you're doing with this card, and I would absolutely love to play with it in limited. The wording is pretty wild. I think that I'd word it much differently, though. Let's see... Because one is contingent on the other, I don't think you can word it the way you want to to get around the two-target problem. I think it should be: "Exile target creature you control. When you do, this spell deals damage equal to that creature's power to any target. For as long as that card remains exiled, you may cast it on any turn that you've played an Island." That's the simplest that I think I can get, and I don't even think that's right, but it's a fascinating concept.

The real question is what the hell you're doing with the flavor of this card. Just to be clear: is this intending to say that there's a habit of Ixalan's pirates to be launched at high speed towards other pirates who have been similarly marooned by being launched? I wish I could fully understand what the art description is depicting here, because the POV isn't actually telling me what's happening in a way that I can visualize. There's a pirate in trajectory, but at the same time they're hitting another pirate? I do want to say, I'm not quite grokking a world in which pirate-based missile combat is a primary means of warfare. It's hella funny and I won't deny that, but I might need a little more from you intention-wise. Cool limited card, but...

@grornt — Peak Seeker (JUDGE PICK)

Bears in green, the be-all end-all. Well, maybe not exactly a bear, but I do think this card is pretty good. The impulse to attack each turn in green is an odd one, but if you're going for a bit more of an aggro-to-grave strategy, RG Stompy is a good way to go and this card fits into the shell. I don't know how much I have to add to or critique about this card on the mechanical standpoint. It's a great common! You can have yourself a three-power aggro creature as early as turn two, and that's on-rate for a lot of creatures these days, especially because you have to have the stipulation of a multicolor deck. This is absolutely a bottom-up card, but I do appreciate the ways in which you sought to get a little story going there.

I assume, of course, that if this character sees a mountain, then they're compelled to climb it, i.e. attack each turn. Totally with you their. The death-to-surveil definitely feels like a mechanical add, but I can't fault that. It's hard to compare commons sometimes in these contests, because as elegant as this card is, I know it's so useful that it's almost hard to really fall in love with the possibilities. There aren't any crazy archetypes or unique moments, but I'd slot this in XYZ environment into any deck where I'm running RG, and it would be a strong draft signal that RG is open. In packs 2-3 it's possibly even a first-pick. If there's more story there, I'm curious what you had in mind, but rest assured that this card is good and remains good and you should take this thumbs-up with a smile.

@harunakonomi — Dust Storm

I'll be talking about this more in the intro write-up (which I usually do after all the commentary, just to pull back the curtain a little bit), but I really appreciated the cards this week that used their colors to enhance their slice of the color pie with a unique twist. This one, for example, doesn't do anything that black doesn't already do, but it requires you to be playing a deck with a lot of Plains to work well. Great idea! In limited or constructed, having a sweeper like this is a major resource, and you can come out of nowhere with a cost-efficient card however you want. I'm reminded of that one from MH1 that did the same thing but counted snow permanents. That one's still really great.

In terms of the Fair and contest submissions, I'm not sure what the choices were going into this, but that's where I feel we dropped the ball a bit. Was this card supposed to be common? For a sweeper, I really would hope not; even the weak red/black ones are almost always uncommon, and this one should definitely be a rare. I get the name's relationship to the mechanics, but this card should definitely have had flavor text. There's room for it and there's room to enhance the story of this place for sure. Art direction possibly as well? I know that this is a good card at heart. I'm still looking for a little bit more to really give it that edge of feeling.

@helloijustreadyourpost — Boil Over

This is a really weird one, and ultimately, I'm gonna say that this is a severe bend that's an arguable break, even with the Mountain restriction. The thing is, you can still run this in a mono-blue deck—even if it wouldn't make sense to, but all the same. It's not even a basic mountain, so Vents/Falls/etc. could still trigger it. Is that the biggest deal in the world, for a random uncommon to deal damage this way with a specific build? In the grand scheme of things, probably not. In terms of color pie integrity, giving blue this kind of damage isn't what it's supposed to do, even with the restriction. I know that I've been waffling a lot on what bends feel more or less acceptable given the examples presented; this card's potential just barely goes over the line for me. And I can absolutely see arguments in the other direction, I'll concede that. Direct damage in blue is a really tricky line.

In theory, I do like the concept of this card, and I like the combination of effects that you've got here. Thirst for Knowledge is an awesome card, as is Compulsive Research, and that whole other family of cards, etc. All swell. Drawing and damaging to combine with spellslinging decks is, again, really fun to do, even if it's a little hard to wrangle in limited sometimes. The AD and flavor text is decent, if disconnected. I'm not quite getting a sense of that whole steam-based thing from the AD, or at least a sense of damage being dealt—where's the boiling? I imagined it coming out of someone's head, honestly, or at least I would've suggested that if there was no AD there already.

@hypexion — Atropa, Dark Seedling

Once again we find ourselves at the crossroads of "how much bend is bendy" for a color—in this case, direct life loss in green. This one is a little more of acceptable since you have to actually play the swamps and would therefore be more inclined to use them as a two-colored deck. Now, you and I both know: in today's Commander-themed world, this activated ability would be GB instead of just 2-generic. And if that was the case, then this card would be totally fine. Because of this contests's restrictions, I feel that this card is trying to do something that's objectively better if it breaks contest parameters and has that multicolor cost. I can imagine it's a little frustrating, but that's the point of experimentation and feedback, I suppose. And for all other purposes, I think this card is cool.

Like, you're now in the realm of a BG graveyard lands-matter archetype, and that by itself is neat, and you have an awesome aggressive legend for the late game who can buff itself if you land it early, while turning your excess lands into life loss later. As a card in isolation (and imagining the ability to be a colored activation), it's super fun. I'm a little curious about the world and setting, but I do imagine that this card was more mechanics first with a cool name to follow, yeah? Maybe I'm wrong on that, correct me later. Either way, sacrificing swamps isn't a bend even if the life loss is a lot bendier. Without a specific hard line, it's difficult to say, but I'm erring on the side of probably needing more than this contest allows. Nothing wrong with the base of the card itself.

@i-am-the-one-who-wololoes — Cleric of Liesa

This card is...weird. It's really weird. I know that you're trying to go for an inverse of Dark Confidant, but the whole Swamp clause attached to the activation without a "then" turns this card into a flying Dark Confidant for all intents and purposes. And then when does the lifegain happen? I know from triggers and whatnot that if you do control a Swamp and then choose to put the card on the bottom while scrying, you'll do the whole Bob thing first and then the second ability will trigger, all at upkeep... It's so much, and there's no clean inversion here. There's scrying, life loss, life gain, two triggers, one of which is kinda contingent upon the other, so much stacking... It's playable, but my goodness, there's so much happening in isolation.

That might be where I'm feeling really awkward about it—the isolation. This card does everything for and with itself, and that's fine, and the lifegain/loss is still relevant, but if you can land a Swamp, this card is also so much advantage generation. You're essentially drawing a card and hoping to gain more life than you're losing every single turn, which you can do on top of having a 2/1 flying creature for two mana. In limited, you're tearing through the deck, hitting lands when you need or gaining life when you don't feel like drawing an expensive card. Not that it matters, because you're most likely already getting the lands you need. Long story short, this card is in the Oko camp of being warpingly good, with far too much text to be the mirror of its intention. I know the flavor text is there for that reason, but it squishes the rules text way too much.

@j2miner — Tumblestone Kavu

Mechanically, I think this card is pretty awesome in concept. I would imagine that it would be a fine uncommon, since it can be powerful in the same vein as Nishoba Brawler. Getting a RG stompy shell in limited with any number of Mountains would make this card pretty great, and I can see a world where it's a great casual card with dual-typed lands. Maybe at uncommon you could even push it to three toughness, but that's asking a lot. As for formatting, I feel that these two effects could be separate lines, and worded out like: "This creature gets +1/+0 for each Mountain you control. // As long as you control four or more Mountains, this creature has trample." See where the precedent/grammar works there?

Now I'm not sure how many submissions you've done for the Fair (it's been so long, there are so many old and new faces...) but most folks know that I'm a bit of a stickler for flavor and flavor text at times. For this card, there's the question of who's actually saying this, if it's in quotes. Additionally, I don't know how Kavu are specifically designated on their various planes—wait, are they just Dominaria? They might be just Dominaria. Huh... Anyway. Name-dropping the card as its own species doesn't feel necessary when "kavu" would be just fine. The current FT is a run-on sentence; that comma in the middle could be a semicolon or a hyphen if you wanted it to flow without a full sentence break. And in general, I'm not yet seeing the way that life 'destroys everything in its way' from the intended flavor. Does life do that? Is there some aspect of green that agrees with that? I think it might be a good idea to step back and really think about what you'd want the text to be saying to compliment the card.

@lanabutnotdelray — Rising Wildfire

My singular mechanical critique is that this card could also hit planeswalkers and still be really good, although the counter to that is that you could play this around a GR Planeswalker deck intentionally. My only flavorful curiosity is the association of RG on Bloomburrow with raccoons—but this isn't necessarily about the raccoons so much as it is the calamity beasts, is it. I think on a return to Bloomburrow, I would like to see more of a conflict between the inhabitants of the plane and the calamity beasts, instead of Lorwyn-but-fuzz. And this card would slot right in! (Also I lied about minor critiques: I think "this" should be "this spell" and that the first instance of naming the card should be "this spell" as well.)

Back to the really good stuff. Sweepers! Uncommon sweepers have been avoiding the X-costs for a while, and they usually distribute them rather than have it be to everything, but there's nothing wrong with a more powerful sweeper here, right? I think that they're good for giving red easier outs, and they're not as absolute as other cards in other colors. I think the flavor you're going for really sets into motion this sense of widespread destruction, this sense of true calamity, and forests burning down still have their power tapped to singe the feathers of the poor birds (and then some). You've hit at the heart of feeling on a super strong card. I like that push.

@nfatcheese — Fiery Bear

The results: cute in an eye-rolling chuffing way. The card: possibly too powerful for how it's costed. Looking at things like Orcish Lumberjacks, lands are fun to have around but not if you're using them to get the game going. If you play this card as a splash in an RG deck that's mostly G, you have land-drop-hit-face and the game is done in five turns, most likely. Two damage would still be really great, and probably on-rate when comparing it to cards like Orcish Vandal. I think there's nothing wrong with a more aggressive side to things, don't get me wrong. Rate to damage output on an already aggressive body is just a wee bit too much for me.

I almost, almost wish you had done more with the flavor. I don't think anything would've been enough to get it out of the mire of irony, but I'm still curious. Talk to me, pal. Was there a world on which you could envision talking bears who specialize in ecological recklessness? Because, oh my good God would I love to see that. Arcavios has bears, right? What if there was a whole "Field Trip" set for Strixhaven where the five schools each had students journeying out beyond the campus walls for a MacGuffin and they encounter the allied-colored inhabitants? I'm...really stretching here, but like, the concept could be really cool and then allow for this kind of card to feel more solid. I did laugh! Take that for however you want. But I do need more beyond my own extrapolation.

@piccadilly-blue — Brushfire

I'm liking this little trend of cards-caring-about-numbers-of-X for these sorts of submissions. This one feels pretty good, if a little niche, but there's nothing wrong with niche. I think the primary sorcery effect of dealing damage is what the focus is, because letting your Plains tap for red mana is definitely a flavor-first effect. As far as card flavor goes, I think that it's an excellent choice. Maybe it doesn't necessarily do much for the game (unless you're starved for red mana or there's some kind of Adamant-like ability), but it matters for the feeling. You're in control of the burn, and that's all good.

Limited RW aggro could definitely use the flexibility, IMO. You can lean a little more heavily into the white creature side of things and use the red as a secondary resource for cards like this. You know, the funny thing I just realized about these cards is that a lot of them imply some sort of cycle. Am I crazy for thinking that? Like, it would be a little bit weird for them to just be one-offs for some archetypes, and those archetypes would be signposts for limited regardless. Maybe they're just Commander singles, though, and that's a whole other story... Either way, yeah, no, decent kind of nightmarish burn spell you got going on here. Is "Arixa" part of a fanplane, or did I miss something in my looking-things-up stage?

@real-aspen-hours — Skimming Pterodon

Fun fact: even though "Pterodon" is used as a flying dinosaur in that one Ixalan set, "Pterosaur" is more accurate, because apparently "pterodon" is an extinct mammal species. Who knew! Either way, sorry about the whole snafu with this card, this weekend was an absolute madhouse. I think this card is ultimately really, really good, and a strong bottom-up design. As usual, with the space we got here, it would've been fun to see some art direction or flavor text, but I can see the dinosaur flying low across the surface of a beautiful ocean regardless so I wouldn't put too much stock into worrying about it. Drawing/discarding on a flying body is really powerful if you need that refill, and even if you don't it's a terror in the air.

I'm reminded of that one dragon from Throne of Eldraine, that awesome hybrid one in limited, but only in concept. Entering triggers as a one-off is much different than attack triggers, and this card is meant as a refill for a solid deck moreso than it is an archetype payoff. Of course, drawing however many cards as Islands you have is really good, but at the cost of a hand toss, well. There's not much for me to add besides that, honestly—it's a solid card if nothing else. I like the association with Islands and bodies of water for sure, as a little more of a wild connection on our dinosaur worlds. Maybe there's a Muraganda edge here, yeah?

@reaperfromtheabyss — Castles In the Air (JUDGE PICK)

Well this one is decidedly weird as well. Feels like we've been getting that in microbatches this contest, or perhaps I've been honing in on the weird ones because I've been appreciating them more. So yes! This one was really close to the podium, not gonna lie, because this is such a cool and unique "draw" ability. You can still play it in a monoblue deck, of course, but that doesn't really do much because you can't reach the castle unless there's a way to get there. I mean, come on, that's pretty excellent. I've been noticing an amount of cards that use Mountains as a form of physical verticality, and I've really been liking that. This one in particular demonstrates how powerful those effects can be when you've got the right connections.

The fact that it's the castle giving vigilance allows for your fliers to have that imperial feel often associated with vigilance, so props for that. But just straight-up "drawing" three cards is what this card will be most of the time if you've got a single Mountain, and that being the only restriction is powerful without being overpowered, in my opinion. It's already asking you to build with a UR Fliers deck of sorts, but perhaps there's just a splash for it, or perhaps you don't even need that many fliers to make the deck pop off and it's just the card draw that you want. Like, it's a lot more flexible than it seems, and I'd be really excited to play this in a lot of formats. The one that comes to mind for me right now is my Locust God deck...

@sparkyyoungupstart — Tidy Up the Crater

I saw this card get a little bit of love when the cards were released. It's cute! To some folks. From a flavorful perspective, the crater is... Well, I'm not exactly going to go into the deepest of dives, but I did check the planeswalker's guide and the bats themselves, and I just don't get what you're going for here. No, that's not entirely true—I understand what the depiction is. I feel that it's not the tonal direction that I'd have for the setting. Is the Muck Gator an actual creature? I'm a little too behind on commentary to go do a full sweepthrough myself of every Calamity Beast, but maybe it is, maybe it's not. Either way, the crater feels like a naturally resilient place that doesn't require maintenance, not of this kind, and the card ends up feeling like a pun for pun's sake first.

Mechanics are kind of a wash, but that's just because Sweep was never that great of an ability. Unless there's land-discard-specific synergy, you'll be stuck with a few Swamps in your hand, several turn behind as far as mana goes, all for sorcery-speed lifegain. It's not that this card is inherently unprintable, but it's pragmatically unplayable. Sigh... I don't want to say that this card isn't cute. It is. It's a cute idea. It's just not the kind of card that I have a lot to say about. So it goes. Maybe I need a bat with a mop to clean up my stubbornness.

@stareyedesper — Standsteppe Lagac

In the realm of really good commons, a four-power creature that can attack with indestructible on turn three is...really good. You do have to land a Plains to have that happen, but hey, in the right shell, you're all good. I don't think it's quite strong enough for a Boros pauper aggro deck, but maybe it is if you've got the DMU duals and you're running a Temur Battle Rage kind of Heroic deck. Sheesh... Okay, I'm done being in Magical Christmas Land, because as it stands, this card would be really pushed if it wasn't for the one toughness. Swinging in is still very powerful even without the indestructible, but I wouldn't want more than two of these in a limited deck, I don't think, unless I was so low to the ground that I could run fifteen lands comfortably.

Solid commons run into the problem, Fair-wise, of just being that: really solid. I don't know whether this card was top-down from trying to intersect these colors, or whether you came up with the ability after deciding on the intersection and what would make sense, but the whole card comes together in a way that I could imagine printed right away, straight into Zendikar 4: The Zendikaring. Is indestructible a bend? Yeah, in some ways. Playing an enemy color makes me a little less wary of the damage that it could do metaphorically. Literally, it's gonna do a lot of damage, but a singular keyword here for a creature that's as good a chump-blocker in-pie as it is an attacker in-pie makes me a lot less worried. Great stuff overall.

@taigadecorationno6 — Rapid Urbanization

This card is doing a lot of things that are a little bendy at best, and turning them into pseudo-breaks at worst. White's ability to search for basic Plains has indeed gotten better over the years to help them with ramp. Finding two of them right away, with the option to put them onto the battlefield and/or to play additional lands, is outside of white's pie no matter what way you slice it. The flavorful justification and/or the mechanical distinction is arguable, sure, but I'm not convinced. Just by itself, an unrestricted two-cost sorcery to find the Plains feels far too strong. I would cost this at four if I had to print it, and even then I'm not sure it's the kind of thing that the archetype would want/need, all things considered.

I almost want to call it "unrestricted ramp in white" but there is some kind of restriction, and I don't want to ignore that. I also can't ignore that the Sterling Company is being invoked here, and they're usually... They're the black/white faction on OTJ, right? Having them here feels really weird, because you're gonna want to play this in a GW deck, and the tone of the card's world feels at odds with the tone of the world's color crossovers. Honestly it's odd to think about lands as being something "urban" at all but there's no real other way to go about it, right? That much I understand from what you're going for. The card still feels like there's dissonance between each contrasting aspect, and it's hard to pin down.

@tanknspank — Morass Hydra

I read as much as I could be compelled to through Liliana's wiki page, and then I got to the section on Forsaken and a lot of the information seemed to be in there... Or maybe I shouldn't be reading too much into the question of how much Liliana wants to protect her family home, because that's outside my area of expertise. This card's flavor text did strike me, though, and it feels just a little out of character for green to be in Liliana's wheelhouse. The card itself would be really great with a different angle on why a green hydra cares about swamps, but even the name is pretty good. What location would it be if not Dominaria, then? No idea, but there are definitely options. I want to know why you chose Liliana as the representative for this creature's summoning. Was it just the association with Swamps?

Either way, the card itself is pretty great. It's still a big trampler, which is good enough, but the Swamp bonus just makes it bigger. Stompy hydras in a multiland set? Sure, why not. Maybe there's some +1/+1 synergies in there, maybe there's a land-matters theme, plenty of directions. This isn't a card that you'd want to pass in a draft for sure. If you have more Swamps in the deck, this can even come out early enough to be a big problem. It's curious, the direction that this contest went with numbers-of-cards, because it's an elegant solution to limiting unfair scaling but it also does some work to encourage two-color decks that get better over time. I'm not 100% sold but this card is still super fun, mucky, and has a big monster-y feel. In MSE, you can also go to "Style" and adjust the text to be a little farther away from the top/bottom; I recommend it when the words are squeezed in like this.

@wildcardgamez — Merfolk of the Floodplain

Super interesting ETB trigger there. Super uncertain about the stats. Or more like, I'm not entirely sure what the use of this card is in the grand scheme of things? You've got a two-mana creature with possibly a big butt, and it turns Plains into Tundras, basically... And then what's the game plan afterwards? I'm not really seeing the vision here. It's not necessarily aggressive, it only fixes a portion of your lands... Maybe there's more to be said for the flood counters and Island synergy in a multicolor Merfolk-style kindred deck for limited, I don't know. Even then, this card feels like it's trying to do a lot with a little, and I'm not sold.

What kind of larger effects would a card like this want in limited and beyond? Perhaps you can use flood counters in a way to benefit you, like drawing or tapping, and it comes at the cost of the toughness over time. Or maybe you can have it care more about what you do with Plains for mana weirdness, like...I don't know, allowing them to exert for surveil? That's literally the first idea that came to mind and probably not a good one, but you get the picture. If the whole card came from the name, and I imagine that it might have... Hey, fair's fair, concepts just come out like that sometime. I can picture some super cool art for it.

@wizard-of-interesting-failure — Flood the Realm

So this is what the mockup of your card looks like in the frame, hope it's decent. The one thing to keep in mind is the rarity, which you did forget in your submission. I imagine that this is a rare, because it's a pretty massive swing on the board even for six mana. My favorite aspect of this is the inherent flavor of it, and we're going back to the notion of, like, mountains as places that people can escape to or climb in order to get to other places, higher ground. I'm honestly surprised that MTG doesn't do too much of it. Or maybe I'm just missing cards. Anyway! Yeah, no, the name and ability tell a pretty great story.

I'm also of the opinion that the flavor text is telling us things that we already know, because the strength of this card's mechanics is an awesome story in itself. Do we need to repeat that? I'd rather see your skills be put to use giving us context for why the realm is being flooded—is this a natural event? Is it divine punishment? Did some wizards mess up a spell? Are we seeing the macro scale, or are we seeing it through the eyes of characters in the scene? These are all the little details that really bring a card to life, and I hope to see more of that from you considering this card's inherent strengths already.

@xenobladexfan — Peaktop Goat

Goats! Yeah, this is definitely in the Loam Lion/Kird Ape school of things. Reach is definitely an interesting choice that's not really much of a bend for white, is it? I mean, you've already got it secondary in flying, so there's the small argument that it doesn't need it, but if you have the RW deck being lower to the ground and a WX deck like WU being a little more fliers-based, then you've got yourself a stronger argument for having these kinds of creatures on board. Abilities that are nth-iary in whatever colors they got are important for shaking things up a little in ways that don't break the board, and a two-mana common is a pretty reasonable way to show that.

Someone with far more design knowledge than me can probably wax poetic about reach and white more than I can, but having played an amount of limited, I'll limit myself to that. Eh? In terms of everything else, I'm envisioning the endless mountains pretty easily. I'm really giving the flavor text the benefit of the doubt here and picturing a regal troop of goats braving the slopes. Could it have been a little more tongue-in-cheek or a little more world-based? I dunno, I feel that there's one more ounce of flavor to be added there, something to spice it up. But that's the equivalent of me wanting a little more salt or pepper on an already well-cooked stew, y'know. NOT goat stew, I want to emphasize.

@yd12k — Nile's Insight

My fellow, who the heck is Nile? I was hoping for a little more information, but I guess I'm just not in a good place to be searching for things on the internet today. ANYheck. There's the Nile of the hour themselves, in a tower somewhere. I'm... I do wish I had more context for this character, but I'm piecing them together. So someone is trapped in a tower, and they're looking for some manner of escape, and the Forest is representative of an escape for them, a natural piece among the artifice of blue. If that's indeed what you're going for, then damn, that's pretty strong, and if not, I really do want to know what you have planned here.

As for what this card does, I have the feeling that blue/green ramp is going to be a big point of contention here. Any duals turn this card into a two-mana possible ramp spell in blue, one that's more or less repeatable for the late-game, and is that too much of a bend? I'm honestly feeling the bend here is a bit too far; not that this would break anything in limited necessarily, but a blue-focused deck that could consistently hit Breeding Pool/Hedge Maze and more is doing a lot of work. Maybe that consistency is a little overstated, but again, this is a mono-blue card... Should it be able to hit things this way? I'm really hesitant to argue for it even if it requires a land of a different color just because of the potential for it to do things it's not supposed to do outside of a limited environment. I could be 300% wrong, but that's my gut. Oh, small potatoes: should be a Forest CARD.

@yourrightfulking — Igneous Rebirth (JUDGE PICK)

Hey, hello there, person reading this who may or may not be the OP of this card. Could you do me a favor? I got thinking about timing depictions on instants/sorceries, and I'd like for someone to give me notable examples of cards that ONLY depict the aftermath of the event being portrayed on the card and not the event itself. King—that's not a criticism, because this is a really cool choice here. It's also a real challenge to defend because of the nature of instant/sorcery depictions; this card feels like you want to tell both halves of a story with the same strength on a single card, and I feel that it's taking away from the potential depiction of the intermediate setting.

But come on, that's SUCH good direction. Like, the overgrown village, after however many years it takes for a landscape to rebound after a volcano eruption... That's a great concept, a really cool piece of a larger story. The representation of growth on a burn sweeper, only possible if you control a piece of land that's able to sustain it... That's so cool to me, and I love what you're doing in the larger picture of what MTG cards can do. I could be overthinking this entirely, and the story of the volcano could just be something in the distance... It's just so hard to find that precedent when, like, a story taking place over time is usually relegated to a Saga. D'you see what I mean? All the same, though, this really made me think. The two criticisms: One, name sounds like an elemental spell, and doesn't have that emotional weight that the rest of the card carries, consider revising; two, capitalize Plains.

What programs are you using?

Clipstudio Paint on tablet! I typically use the standard "Real Gpen" and "Oil brush" for most of my works, with the occasional custom brush or two I've got downloaded.

Howdy!

We go by a few different names depending on certain things like who’s fronting, but most of us respond to Skelly! I use they/it pronouns but some of us may use different sets. As a collective we consider ourselves trans, speciogender, and pansexual, although some of us identify differently ofc.

A Few Things:

We’re a system and talk about our alters and experiences a good bit. We often forget to sign off who makes a post but you can find a quick intro to most of us here. If you want to know more about anyone feel free to ask! Keep in mind though that we might not answer for privacy reasons.

We use we/us/our and I/me/my somewhat interchangeably.

We’re bodily 19 and GRADUATED!!! With an associate’s degree in sustainability and environmental science.

I often forget to tag things, many apologies for that.

About my blog

Some things that might be useful to know about this blog:

First of all, this is just a casual blog I run for fun. No specific fandoms or theme, just posts I think are funny and whatever random shit I decide to throw into the void. I don’t have a consistent posting schedule and most of the time I’ll pop in here and reblog 50 things then vanish for weeks.

Second, if you want to check it out, I recently started a side blog dedicated to my photography. That's @katography-photography if you're interested. As of rn it’s kinda dead, because I haven’t had time to edit my photos in freaking forever, but I’ll revive it eventually.

Third of all, I know DNI’s are kinda just a joke now but seriously please don’t message me just to send hate. It will be a waste of both of our times and I’ll just block you. I might not always answer asks if I feel like they’re just petty or a scam or whatever, but if you do want to send me an ask for some reason, feel free.

Lastly, I currently have FIVE consistent tags on my blog.

My main tag is #randum thots, which I use to label all my original/non-reblog posts (except for art and photography, which I tag using the previous two tags obvi). Not all my original posts are under this tag because I only started it in 2022 and trying to find every original post in my years long backlog is a fool’s errand.

The second tag is for my own art, which is just a hobby but I thought I might as well share. It’s #some art i made if you’re interested. It doesn't get updated very often, because I'm a slow artist, but I do post whenever I have something to share.

I recently started getting asks more often, so I’m making a tag for it. Update: been getting a lot of scam asks, posts that aren’t answering asks but are ABOUT asks also get lumped in here now.

My last tag is for my fanfics and writing updates: #some fic i wrote . I am an author on ao3 (although I only have 2 fics on there, and one is still unfinished), my username is Pan_Gremlin if you wanna read my works. One is a short Bakugou-centric bnha fic, the other is a p5 shuake fic that looks like it’s gonna be over 400k words (only have 13 chapters posted rn; I am actively writing tho. Updates are sporadic cause of irl shit but it’s still very much alive). The tag is a bit of a catch-all for anything related to my main fanfic for p5, and rn it’s a bit sparse but it helps for organization’s sake.

As of April 28, I don’t allow anon asks, been getting a ton of anon spam recently. In the last week I’ve gotten ten anon asks that are all identical, which is a new record for me I think. So yeah, might turn it back on in a few months idk
