how would sex work in vault 33?

as a biologist by training, with way too many classes on reproduction, i found myself wondering the answer to this question.

we have only a few lines to work off of to establish these theories. firstly, lucy saying she can't wait for "the real deal" on her wedding day. then, later, she asks maximus directly if he'd like to have sex. not really much, i know. but, i have a few ideas despite this.

also my sources on this include autism that made me rewatch the show five billion times, and a degree in biology + animal science. a lot of research at my school is on reproduction. i almost worked with sperm. a good friend of mine did a study on sex.

i enjoy making video essay-type posts on things since i do research lmao. so, let's dive into some procreation!

in short:

vaults 32 and 33 have a very comprehensive sexual education curriculum, and sexual intimacy is very casual and common.

however, penetrative + procreative sex is reserved for married couples, and-

non-procreative sex is allowed for all. this includes hands, mouths,... other parts. anything that doesn't make a baby.

socially, these rules are kept in line, since no one wants to be the one to have a kid that overloads the food supply or water chip, especially not in a meritocracy.

there may or may not be contraception. i say only married couples get it, since there's likely a limit on number of children they can have.

on the first point, it was clear that lucy knew a good amount about sex. (sex, here, is used generally to mean all acts of intimacy, including nonpenetrative). lucy knew what to do when with monty. lucy offered sex after maximus said she smelt good, and was casual/knowledgeable in what he meant about ejaculation. this could be because of her 'experience' with chet (i don't like discussing this much), but also it's reasonable to extrapolate that she was just taught about all of this in school. they likely sat people down and were like, hey, this is how to make a baby. this is how to pleasure a partner. etc etc etc.

it'd make sense for them to be taught all of this, since 32/33 are explicitly a breeding program. so, it's good to teach them how to procreate effectively. however, they are a breeding program.

the goal, overall, is to make super managers. and i'd like to think bud knows a lil bit about science and selective breeding. so, controlling who people reproduce with is step 1 of making this work. the best way to selectively breed for a trait is to select individuals who exhibit these traits, then put them together. bam, you are one step closer to a super manager. so, you'd make sure marriages are between favorable people, bada bing bada boom.

it's like dog breeding, if you want a less human-centric example. it's also literally eugenics, but bud would definitely dislike that descriptor. it's his own words, he wants a super manager, and 32/33 are breeding pools. so, he's gotta ensure that his breeding program continues without a hitch.

it makes sense, then, for only married couples to perform procreative sex. only married couples can actually reproduce, as they have been approved by the council (and whomever else may be peeking in, like bud). and i think that the stigma associated with a child out of wedlock, as well as education on what makes a baby, how a baby affects the parents and the community, etc., are all ways to keep people from reproducing willy-nilly. the vault clearly prides itself on good deeds, so spinning it as a bad deed that must never happen probably is pretty effective in preventing it. it's not guaranteed, but it just might work.

(plus, you can let them do other things,,, which i touch on later.)

i know i'd hate to be the one to have a kid that throws the entire delicately-balanced vault ecosystem out of balance. one more body may prove too much for the water chip, or the crops! and coming out of the famine (which. may or may not have happened), the idea of keeping the population in-check would be more prevalent within the dwellers.

although, they probably had a mini baby-boom afterwards to get the population back up, because there's a notable lack of 20-30 year olds. imo there's a lot of kids, and a lot of older people. then, mostly young adults died in the famine.

either way, having too many kids would cause problems, especially to have a kid (gasp) without being married. educate them on how to avoid this, and give them alternatives.

i doubt, though, that they'd shun people for having a kid out of wedlock. they'd help and support them, but definitely make them marry to preserve the order.

plus, the way lucy says she needs a suitable marriage partner, to me, moreso seems like marriage is the sole track to procreation, and likely the main psychological method to keep babies from popping up all over. let only the married ones create babies, both to prevent overpopulation AND to control the experiment as a whole.

also, though, it's clear that they don't demonize sex before marriage. and, there's no surefire way to actually prevent people from doing things outside of marriage. religions have tried for millennia to control the whims of human sexual desires. so, callback to my teaser, i think that unmarried individuals can do anything but penis in vagina sex. no making babies, so do anything else. literally anything else.

to frame it with what's been said, they have good sex education. they want to keep reproduction in check, and banning all sex outside of marriage does absolutely nothing to help with that. so, then, why not allow unmarried individuals to be intimate in other ways? handjobs, oral, grinding, heavy petting, there are so many options to allow for people to still scratch the itch whilst not actively posing the risk of making a baby. educate them on how to do these other acts, show them how to be healthy and relieve their urges, but insist, simultaneously, that babies are to be avoided.

it'd also present the idea of freedom, and let dwellers 'socialize', even if their reproduction is heavily controlled. plus, it's good for you! yay! go fuck your neighbor! relieve yourself!

i do want to comment on contraceptives, since i do think there's a chance they exist. i feel like they'd be highly prevalent in in-game vaults if they were something that was available, especially since other vaults have a much lower capacity of people. not every vault has a high-tech atrium growing a bunch of crops. 32 and 33 are also comparatively huge, but that may just be a limit of the game systems (since we can't enter a lot of rooms and dwellings in vaults). even still, you'd want to make sure people didn't get knocked up and overpopulate the vault, causing the mouse utopia that bud mentions.

vault 32/33 may then be an exception, and might have condoms to allow for penetrative intercourse. but imo there's no implication that what chet and lucy did even included that. 'messing around' and marriage being 'the real deal', to me, sounds like lucy hadn't gone that far, so to speak, prior to monty. we also don't know what specifically she was offering with maximus, since 'sex' can refer to any combination of intimate acts. there's many, MANY ways for this all to be interpreted, and ways to achieve the same goal of 'no babies unless said babies would get us closer to or will themselves be super managers'.

i also think the vaults have a limit on how many kids people can have, to help curb overpopulation. married couples may have access to these contraceptives, and i doubt they'd have their tubes tied, since remarriage/making new pairings is a thing. so, only 2 babies per household. no more. stop it.

the vaults likely just have a low rate of fertilization overall, helping with the whole overpopulation thing. be it from the toxic chemicals in their environments, the literal nuclear-fueled devices they wear on their wrists, or the generally poor diet they seem to have (it is better than the wasteland at least), there's likely a lower chance of fertilization and successfully carrying a child to term. the latter is less plausible since i KNOW they'd have good obstetrics to both keep the mother alive, and gain a new life for the vault.

steph's what i mainly base this on because it seems like she was married to bert since the last triennial trade, but only now had her first child. if fertilization was top-notch, they'd definitely be on baby number 2 by now. she also seems incredibly enthusiastic about this whole baby thing, but that could fully be a ruse. regardless, she signed up knowing that she'd be sent into the other vaults to have babies, since i assume she knows exactly what's going on in the experiment. and she doesn't seem to hate the idea of having kids, since she's happy to raise her kids with lucy. so, it took her an awfully long time to have that first baby. i say this is likely from low fertilization rates, but it's also possible that she likes the having kids thing far less than she puts on.

the final tldr (my abstract, perhaps?): vaults 32 and 33 are a breeding experiment to make super managers. to keep this goal in-sight, reproduction within these vaults has to be finely-tuned and controlled. only married couples, which have been approved, are allowed to procreate. to therefore try and curb babies born out of wedlock, 32/33 allow for sexual acts that don't make a baby (i.e. handjobs, oral sex, etc.). social stigma also helps prevent procreation, especially when looking at the limited resources and space within the vaults themselves. it's uncertain if contraceptives exist within the vaults, and fertilization rates may or may not be low as well. regardless, preventing the experiment from going off-the-rails is necessary, so a social + rules-based system was likely put in place to ensure its success.

to end, i also want to note that this shit is fucked up lmao. i'm not like "yay vault tec control people", it's just like. mmm how strange and convoluted can vault-tec be. what other ways can they implement to make humans into guinea pigs for their fucked up experiments.

The lore would be crazy, especially to the characters in the HSR-verse, the potential encounters there.. Some of the Beel kids especially.. genuine eldritch entities there, cosmic horror on a scale previously unknown to any poor trailblazers that happen across poor Percy's spawn.. Imagine them appearing out of nowhere and just terrorising the whole Hoyoverse with their ineffable presence. Lore accurate (to arsenic blues which is somehow more terrifying than actual ROR canon to me) ROR entities would be horrifying to HSR. Trailblazers would be shook, the Herta Spaxe station would be working overtime to figure out what the fuck these absolute fucking lovcraftian horrors are and where they came from... The Genius Society would be stumped, exhilarated and scared shitless if they had any sense (serves them mfs right, they're sleeping on my man Ratio, crisis deserved). If Percy had any level of interaction with literally any faction in HSR she'd probably be so apologetic.. If she was inclined to let slip that those absolute, universe level threats were actually her children. That she physically gave birth to ☠️ what an exchange to have..

Genshin has been mentioned before, even in the fic itself, so they would be extra fucked if they were doomed with Percys fucked up family trees intervention. So much worse than HSR because Genshin takes place on Teyvat which is a single planet, and from what's available in the lore rn, unless Celestia is secretly goated (not that we'd know because they're so elusive about what the hell Celestia even is) they're extra extra extra fucked with the power scaling. Genshin 'Gods'(/Archons) are NOT comparable to ROR Gods in theeee SLIGHTEST 😭

I watched Diabolik Lovers when I was like twelve, and somewhat recently revisited it and looked deeper than just the anime, so there are more factors to a potential crossover with that universe depending on how much of the lore you've consumed and wether you've seen translations of the games (they have banger character songs for Diabolik Lovers btw, I didn't know they existed at first but they do and they're actually really good. I'd recommend Kill You Again, an Azusa song bc hes my fave, my baby boy, my poor little masochistic meow meow ❤️‍🩹🗡). But I digress - I can see the Percy kids going to that universe for shots and giggles, with how haughty the Sakamaki's/Mukamis behave it would be so satisfying to see them get shat on by their power levels being dwarfed, #justiceforYui. I can imagine some Percy kids would infiltrate their universe and start attending their night school or something just to torment them 💀

The closest thing Diabolik Lovers have to a god (that we know of) is Karlehinz Sakamaki, who's the Vampire King and yada yada, he's very powerful in the lore, because I know I've seen somewhere that, while his kids backstories and abuses are way worse in the actual lore than the anime, they were deliberately engineered to be that way because he kept fucking rewinding time, specifically in Cordelias case (mother of the triplets) until she behaved exactly the way he wanted her to to break their kids so that the only form of love they could ever know was the 'love' they'd inevitably feel for Yui. It wasn't really expanded on in the anime aside from the vague references to 'Eve' and picking an 'Adam', but the whole purpose was to have one of the vamps procreate with Yui to conceive a new species, it was also something to do with some disease call Endzeit I think? That wiped out a whole species of demons (I could be mistaken about those two things being connected, but I know the disease exists in the lore and the demons were wiped out, just no lt sure if the disease is the direct cause)- which is what the vampires actually are, they're just a specific clan of demons, I think related to bats, which is why they resemble vampires.

Karlheinz also has some freaky relatives called Shin and Carla, the werewolf (yes, they are actually vampires, shh) dudes who very briefly showed up in the anime who were never expanded on because there were no more seasons. They were part of the race that was wiped out - First Bloods - and have an obsession with restoring their race or whatever (Carla wants to cure Enzeit as well because, oopsie, it appears he has that exact terminal illness, RIP) so they'd definitely have a particular interest in any Percy kids that happened to pop into their dimension because who better to repopulate with than the exact kind of superior race they're trying to propagate??

NEARLY as customizable as something like csp or photoshop (ewww) but it works like. pretty fucking well honestly. the brushes all have a very nice feel to them and it's a very far far reach from csp in terms of like. Set up BUT its free and has a lot of pre-made brushes to pick from :) ... unfortunately theres no way to import stuff unlike csp and ps so ur stuck with things made within the app or downloaded from the cloud i think otherwise tho i think it has a very nice interface :)) NOT animation friendly tho. sigh

FIREALPACA: FREE... also you can animate in it but its fucking insane. better selection of brushes than medibang but im not a big fan of how it feels + it was super laggy for me when i used it....

KRITA: same as above p much but a smaller brush selection ... IBISPAINT: free! big fan of the brushes (+ theres a LOT of them) & even if the interface is a little confusing for me its pretty simple & would be good for sum people i think :) PROCREATE: $5 last time i checked? fuck procreate honestly. one of my least favorite programs & i used it for 2 years so i would know. it gets a LOT of popularity because its aesthetically pleasing and. one of my favorite things to play around with, in omegaverse? changing what something "usually" means.

family = parents and biological children in a shared household?

not any more its not!

family = a group of friends who share a house together like they have for years, even after forming partnerships with others or having kids

family = a queer platonic couple, the kids they adopted (despite being able to procreate together if they wanted to), and the neighbors that are like siblings to them

family = three generations of parents, children, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who might as well be family, who rally around each other in good times and bad

family = two lifelong best friends who went from playing together as kids, to raising families, to growing old, while becoming the cornerstones of their neighborhood

family = one big old polycule spread across multiple households, and the assortment of kids who have called them aunties and uncles from day one

family = a happily single person, their pets, and the network of friends that they feel safe going to whenever problems are bigger than one person should carry

family = a couple, their newborns, the siblings who help out, and the grandparents who are first in line to babysit

family = a single parent, their kids, and a very robust support network

it gets even more interesting based on the social positions of the six sexes.

(in my head: primary sex = alpha, beta, omega. secondary sex = male, female. to keep from having to list them all, its "six sexes" but in some settings there can be more or less)

for example: what if there's a society that separates alphas and omegas as a general practice? it's the task of all omegas to run the towns and villages and see to their defense; alphas, on reaching presentation, are trained to watch over the land and tend to the region as a whole. if the two groups tend to mix mostly with those they share a classification with, how do their family groups appear?

or what if the society is arranged less like our human ones, and more like specific animal groups? if your packs operate more like a bee hive, how does that change their view of family, future generations, and group membership?

basically: there are lots of types of families, even irl, so making packs unique is more fun to me than going "parents and their kids" despite that being the most accurate to actual wolf pack structures

(though, since that structure isn't super typical to how we show families in media, i do kinda want to explore an established one! just not super interested in the "couple meets and raises their first baby" part because there's already a lot of focus on that as what "happily ever after" looks like. i want to get into how the following generation finds meaning and sets goals without doing as their parents did)

i got this a while ago and debated answering, but i do like rambling and have time tonight. i will not go into specifics because i do not intentionally seek out omegaverse content; my experiences with it are from being in fandom and spec bio spaces where someone just starts talking about it, or every once in a while i read it by accident (i am not actually good about reading tags). i am aware that not everyone follows the same rules and i don't need anyone coming into my askbox to explain how their personal version doesn't do the following things i'm about to say. one reason i know more about omegaverse than i want to is the strange phenomenon of people thinking that a person can be "converted" if only they understood it more....! so: yes, i support any hypothetical fans on my blog writing and enjoying whatever version of omegaverse they want, but no, i do not want you explaining it to me.

anyway, i guess we should first talk about the biological definitions of sex and gender.

sex can be defined multiple ways by biologists depending on what they're trying to study. the one i use for animals & plants is the evolutionary definition, which is based on gametes-- basically, are you set up to make small gametes (male) or big gametes (female)? this is called anisogamy (two different sized gametes within a species) and it's shockingly universal in plants and animals, which is why it's my preferred definition. (although note that gametes size and morphology can vary a ton between species and even between individuals-- the only constant is that within a species, sperm are smaller than ova.) the resulting traits that go along with sex (physical traits, chromosomes, etc) are NOT universal, but i'll talk about some patterns.

note that there ARE isogamous organisms-- such as fungi or algae-- which do not have differently sized gametes. usually instead of sorting them by "sex," they're sorted by "mating type"

also important to know-- lots and lots of plants and animals make both types of gametes. the technical biological term for this is hermaphroditism, but if you're reading this for spec bio reasons i highly urge you NOT to use this term for humans/near-humans. that is because it's unfortunately also a pejorative/dehumanizing term for intersex people (and biologically inaccurate to them). i've seen people use "dualsex" but another scientific term would be "monoecious" (although i have never seen this used outside of plant scientists lmao). technically "bisexual" also works but you can imagine this could be confusing and someone who's never read an old scientific paper might yell at you

okay. so now we've defined sex. what is gender? i am by no means an expert in this, but most people will define it as some sort of social role. for some people it is very personal and definitions are individual. i am only including this paragraph because there was briefly a trend amongst biologists to define "animal gender" as social roles animals play when interacting with each other. i don't personally like this because it often ends up tying the concept of gender to genetics or underlying biological traits. i prefer the more historical term alternative reproductive tactics (ARTs), which refers to when there's multiple strategies/phenotypes/"genders" within a single sex of a species. for example, side-blotched lizards have three different male phenotypes which all exhibit different behaviors with different advantages/disadvantages in terms of procreation.

so, biologically, omegaverse is a mating system where both sexes (that's male/female) experience ARTs (that's the alpha/omega/beta), and mating occurs in a disassortative way. Disassortative mating means that individuals are more likely to mate with (and are perhaps are more likely to successfully produce offspring with) other individuals that are "different" from them in some way. for example, white throated sparrows have two morphs per sex. both "tan" males and females invest energy into parental care, and "white" males and females invest energy into acquiring multiple mates, which white females even using brood parasitism (leaving eggs in a nest that's not hers). tan males mate with white females, and tan females mate with white males (i know there's been studies where two of the same mate with each other and the outcome is less good, but i forget what it is just now lol).

one puzzling part of the omegaverse is that by the definitions i see most often (where humans are born male/female and then develop "secondary dynamics" later), alpha males/omega males shouldn't be able to have children. Sperm do not have enough physical "stuff" to make a baby, even if you ignore genetic imprinting and other mechanisms that prevent people's own gametes from fusing. I don't like mpreg on the grounds that i just don't like stories about pregnancy in general, but I get confused when people go in depth about the biological set ups of their AU and then just don't go into what sex even is? Like, if it were just magic or completely handwaved, sure, fine. But why delve into biology and then get basic things wrong? Like, does your world just have mating types? Are some people dualsex? Are your males actually not males? If any of these things, why are the genital configurations they way they are? I will accept "because I think it's hot/fun/whatever" as an answer, but please be honest that that IS the answer. A lot of time people try harder and harder to explain biology and just get nonsensical. Which, again, that's fine for having fun, there's nothing wrong with it or enjoying reading it-- but it will bother me.

im sure someone is already opening their bookmarks to send me an example where one of my suggestions happens. don't do that. i know different people do different things and probably there's examples of at least a few of the above. i know this because people keep sending me things i don't want to see, and often times they're still wrong. don't be that guy

my biggest gripe re:biology in omegaverse, like many people, is with the bioessentialism in sex/ARTs/"gender" that omegaverse aus tend to hang on their invented mating system. like, obviously, the aspects where heats/ruts/whatever make people so horny they have to fuck or end up in extreme pain is already dubcon because it's basically just rebranded sex pollen, and it gets worse when writers choose to also include biological mechanisms where one individual can "force" or compel another one, especially when it occurs along sex-specific lines. and like, don't get me wrong-- i like some dubcon tropes. i do not have an issue with people enjoying what they enjoy in fictional scenarios. what bothers me is the shocking frequency with which i will run into people preaching their "moral omegaverse" and then they literally just describe slightly more complicated dubcon. this isn't just an omegaverse fan issue-- people do this with all sort of other tropes and AUs too-- but it is a pattern and it's annoying.

and! here's the thing that extra gets my goat. a reason why a lot of people (not everyone ofc) like sex pollen and other biology-compulsion based dubcon tropes is that the fact that it's "biology" feels like it should free the involved characters of responsibility for their actions. but this is not how human behavior works, and it's literally not how biology works. animals have coercive sex all the time, but evolution does not actually favor this. it is not evolutionarily advantageous to be at the whim of your alpha a male. female mate choice is incredibly important to evolution, and if coercive sex is happening, then something is simultaneously also evolving to re-establish mate choice. that's how you get things like weird shaped penises to match weird shaped vaginas, or females being able to selectively kick out sperm.

also the world is filled with interesting mating strategies and it makes me sad that people want to "explore" it and then just stick to made-up quasi-wolf dynamics. :( where are the anglerfish dynamics. the whiptail lizard dynamics. the dynamics based on whatever that frog is that can only mate with a different species of frog. why aren't so many people at least googling how seahorses work, and also why do so many people spend so long describing alt biology for how they're getting (insert man here) pregnant only to get the very definition of sex wrong. even if i were into omegaverse, i think i would leave the most unhinged mean comments............

To answer your question, the dividers and headers are actually very easy to make. The animated dividers I make aren’t difficult per se, they just involve a few more steps than making a normal divider does. If your background is white it will have a hard time differentiating the gif from the white background and will clip out parts of the gif and make it choppy. I recommend having a plain black background as that works best for me. Also it just recently had an update where you need to wait 10 seconds before you can download the finished product. It also claims you can only use it a certain amount of times a day but tbh I’ve used it a bunch in one day and never seem to have a limit. So idk. Like I said this update is recent. I guess a lot more people started using it and now they want to charge people.

What's gender affirming care like on hallowed carrion?

Good question, it can be a little wild west out there, even just with regular hospice/holistic care, depending on where you’re at and which species or community you belong to. I’d say on Mors Astra (name of the planet), sexuality and gender expression can be as eclectic and varied as most animals/humans irl….Um, I guess I’m going to info dump about my individual trans characters and their experiences as well as how some of the main species would view it over all and hope that it answers your question. I’ll also be creating other sophont species that could have different views on things so there’s that too.

Also content warning ahead for forms of transphobia and gender dysmorphia topics.

For the Myce I’d say for the most part getting something like a cosmetic change is no biggie to them, as they don’t tend to have strict guidelines for gender expression. It probably wouldn’t go as in depth as it does with mammalians, surgically and medication wise. Their nerves and vessels grow back easier and such. Even their genitalia is strictly geared towards pleasure, like a miniature sexual mycorrhizal network of nerve endings. There’s no sperm or eggs involved. Their genitals may go by human guild lines in terms of appearance, but they can get pretty wild looking. I haven’t quite thought it through entirely just yet but I guess they might have their own form of T and E, if they cosmetically wanted breasts or a more phallic attachment, etc. I feel like they’d go more along the route of genetic expression rather than hormones though. There isn’t really a huge societal rift between who expresses themselves as feminine, masculine, etc. (although there could always be some strange cults and eccentrics out there!) I’d say to them it’s more important that you look conventionally humanoid. If you’re a bloom face (like Heidi), or have a tail/ horns or look more ‘animalistic’ and ‘othered’ for that matter, you’re more likely to face some stigma in certain regions populated by Myce. This derives from early on when the Myce were first coming into being. They were called changelings, ‘faefolk’, fairies, etc, and caused a lot of widespread fear and misconceptions. They associate such terms with being considered monstrous, diseased, etc.

They don’t reproduce like mammals, as they technically aren’t mammals, so luckily for them natal affairs and giving birth aren’t tied to any specific gender and are entirely up to the individuals who want to go that route.

In the case of Vveashuls, I think they’re a little more ‘traditional’ so to speak. (Tbh I think I’ve ended up expressing some deep seated frustrations with what I’m surrounded by everyday in them, oops! No fault of the Vveashuls ofc.)

With Vveashuls, many pockets of them tend to put a lot of value in procreation, having several kids, being able to breastfeed them on your own, etc. One should always put the family first.

In the past, while they lived on Zenith as one species, having litters and as many healthy kits as possible meant their survival. Often times their young would be culled by the Furies in order to keep their numbers down and keep them under control. Mind, not ALL Furies kept Vveashuls in servitude, just certain rooks.

Where they’re out from under the Furies control now, they hold pride in keeping big families, staying together, the next generation raised by the previous, etc.. A lone Vveashul is seen as strange, or that something is wrong with them. In the modern day, this creates a lot of pressures.

In Jago’s case, he grew up in a town of very traditional views; the idea of a Vveashul that can get pregnant getting rid of their breasts or their ability to give birth/ taking hormones was unheard of or seen as a selfish act of self mutilation. Males transitioning to females were seen as ‘useless’ or strange pretenders. Even just starting out, his family was very small, just him and his father.

Jago didn’t even really know what felt ‘off’ about himself until he met Kraw, Titus, Mayv and her crew. Puberty only made it more painfully obvious. Once he was old enough and sure of himself (this was after he and Kraw had parted ways the first time) It was very difficult for him to get any kind of treatment for such things geared towards his kind, even in Ladder occupied cities. He had to go under the table for most of his surgeries and medications, which put him in many dangerous situations. With his primary breasts still intact, he still feels like he’s not where he wants to be. The fact that the last surgeon to remove his secondary ones left him with obvious scars is frustrating as well. The whole process had just exhausted him overall. So he focused more on work.

On top of taking hormones, he would often have to take suppressors (yeah, those.) otherwise he’d go into heat and get all swollen and sensitive (it’s also fairly normal for female Vveashuls to take suppressors lest they deal with going into heat in day to day life, which can be very inconvenient in the modern day.)

He absolutely hates how he gets without the suppressors, as it only adds to his dysmorphia.

He’d occasionally have to deal with his old work mates making fun of him about it. They referred to him as a male, sure, but he still felt like they saw him as playing pretend. They would make comments like “oohh you’re grumpy today, are you off your meds?” Where they were mostly Myce, they didn’t deal with the average hang ups of mammalian sophonts and usually found it strange or funny.

Jago wants to be completely severed from the idea of having and mothering kids, the expectations of female Vveashuls, etc. I’d go as far as to say he’s had legitimate tokophobia his entire life. But he’s feels somewhat apprehensive of further surgeries for the time being, at least until he finds someone trustworthy and experienced. Who knows! He might find one in Marrowtide.

THANKFULLY, where he lives now with Kraw and the others in Marrowtide, he’s in a MUCH more accepting/progressive environment, so I’d say that definitely helps him with the dysmorphia and anxieties of how his body looks. Despite being intimidated by Sylvaine, he gladly take his hormones and suppressors from her, where she also supplies them for Kraw in order to temporarily stave off his occasional ‘rut’ aggression (they’re almost like a birth control). Even other Vveashuls in Marrowtide wouldn’t care that Jago’s gotten surgery. Most of them probably escaped to Marrowtide in order to get away from stifling environments as well.

Disclaimer ofc: I don’t see having kids/ a big family etc as inherently stifling or negative by any means, I’m only referring to harmful beliefs and pressures that may come from growing up in a family with very controlling traditional viewpoints.

In Durja’s case, pockets of Fury cultures vary from rook to rook (‘rook’ being similar to a clan). Most are matriarchal. Durja herself was a sentry and the occasional personal concubine for the ‘Crowned Matron’ at the time (matriarchal leader of the rook). They don’t really perceive being trans, only caring that you are strong and tactical. Though, I’d say if you were looking to transition to female it would be very dangerous, as most of the females would take that as a challenge. In that same way a female transitioning to a male might be seen as weak. Within the Furies species, most of the time the females are bigger, stronger and tend to be more aggressive, even possessing pseudo-penises. They’re also polygamous.

I’d say she’s gotten most of her ideas of what she wants for herself by having watched Sylvaine in relationships for a while, thus deciding she wanted to be loved romantically in such a manner rather than the usual domineering way she had been used to. Taking in the strengths she’d see among the female Furies and she’s got her own image she’s made for how she presents herself.

She hasn’t personally dealt with any type of body dysmorphia and wasn’t interested in taking hormones from Sylvaine despite her offering, deciding she was fine with herself. (In fact, having a noticeable bulge as a female would be seen as desirable among Furies and Sylvaine definitely doesn’t complain).

Anyway, I hope that gives some insight for how it may be in some regions of Mors Astra. I think I just like to imagine animal hierarchies applied to creatures with human intelligence is all idk lol.

i got a comment on my Doki Doki ♪ Harmony Live2D Models asking how they’re made and thought i should try and explain my process!

note: i loosely followed @ribbon-sweet’s explanation here! xe explains it really well imo and her shuffle au is very cool and has much much more sustenance for the fans go FOLLOW HER!!! /nf

↓↓↓ this was the speedpaint for all of the ddh models if you want a visual, be warned it’s got a ton of backtracking and flashes/sudden appearances.

Here’s a kind-of step-by-step but not really of my process/notes!

For at least unit outfits (for swaps or shuffles), I’d definitely recommend making / editing 3D models from in game first! Unless you’d like to draw the outfit by hand, be my guest, but it looks good even with slapping and editing it onto the live2d. Saves a lot of time and potential hand cramps lmao

On the topic of 3D Models, the poses they make in the dress up menu sometimes makes them hard to select and edit (eyeing honami…), so if that happens to you, I’d recommend putting the outfit on Mafuyu and giving her short hair to select and copy/paste from as she has a simple, front facing pose with little arm posing.

I source my models from sekai.best, as you can pose and change expressions easily, and they just added a toggle to turn off the looking-around type animation applied! Swimsuit and Sports models are my bases because they usually have short/no sleeves and are less bulky than other costumes, but you might have to cut in the legs (i took from Nene’s school outfit in this case,) for sports models.

Don’t be afraid to Frankenstein parts together! I stole jackets from other models for Nene and Minori’s casual outfits (the images aren’t properly uploading right now sighhh) and they turned out fine! I’ll probably be doing this in the future too.

Add whatever edits you want! I don’t do very much, but other editors definitely do more to their models (the most I probably did was give minoririn freckles and doing the bang thing on Nene, i think?) For programs, I use procreate because I’m used to it, but I’m pretty sure anything works! I know people use ibispaint, at least.

More of a personal thing, but I also used an extra layer to cover up the expression to make adding different expressions easier in the future.

Have fun and don’t stress out on making them at maximum efficiency! All of these took me about 4 hours over the course of multiple days. There’s no rush.

This is also a personal thing, but background noise helps because this is a long, tedious process most of the time. Whatever you like, but long videos can have you switch around less. (I made some of these edits with Shayy’s “Undertale Genocide but Every Enemy is Sans��� vod, and i didn’t even finish it before falling asleep!)

Woah! You draw the Disney art style perfectly and I wanna know all your secrets! What art program do you use and how did you learn to draw animals and people so well in the Disney style? Is there a tutorial on how to make them properly? I am a massive fan of classic hand drawn Disney movies myself and seeing you give an extremely underrated film like "Brother Bear" so much attention is wonderful! I saw it theaters when it first released and while the reception wasn't the best, it's way, WAY better than the slop Modern Disney has been slinging at us for over the past decade. Now we just need someone to give "Home on the Range" the time of day.

ourgh I'm not really good with explaining things but I'll try my best ahehefuhe:

first off, I use procreate.

it's $12.99 for any ipad (i think). honestly I don't think you need any specific art program to make your art look "good". any program can be suitable but this is just what I use.

secondly, as for tutorials for drawing, I never really took classes or anything; I kinda just learned things on my own and take inspiration from my favorite artists or go on pinterest to look at art tips, so I guess you can say I'm a self taught artist lol.

however, there were a few times when I stumbled into Aaron Blaises (director of brother bear) live streams on tiktok and see him drawing bears. so I just took on from some of those and they were actually pretty helpful. he does have some art classes you can take, but they're expensive so it's a nah for me. (but of course if you wanna take them, go for it)

so I recommend just watching his live streams on either tiktok or youtube.

thirdly, I think the BIGGEST thing that helped me improve at my brother bear artstyle was doing art studies of the movie itself. what I did was that I took screencaps from the movie and I just tried studying how Kenai and Koda are drawn. I will say the shape theory is actually really awesome and I think that's what helped improve my art.

I would show some of the art studies I did, but they're old and I'd rather show a newer, cleaner one. maybe one day I can make a video explaining how I do it but, i'm really shy when it comes to talking in a video 🥲 we'll see

but anyways, that's really the best way I can explain it, again I'm still learning as I only started ACTUALLY drawing about almost 5 years ago

😭 tysm anon and happy holidays to you!! i did my best to explain some of the process behind my color picking and choices for the ivantill comics under the cut, i hope its coherent cuz quite frankly it also takes me a long time to decide what colors to use

a little disclaimer: i tend to just put base colors, before i start adding shading or lighting. i also dont usually start off with a fixed color palette in mind, because my process is pretty much figuring out as i go along, and playing with all sorts of colors; however whenever i do end up with a fixed idea on the color palette the process is still applicable anyways so hopefully its helpful for u too :’]

ok so i usually decide colors by asking what kind of mood or tone im going for. for example, the recent ivti comic i did

the comic imo is pretty playful - theres a romantic element ofc but i think the focus is rly on how ivans being kulit / annoying as usual so i thought a spunky, albeit warm color would rly fit. theyre also chilling in tills house so i thought a home-y, comfy feeling would be good

i was still playing around, so for the first attempt at realizing that tone, i added a hot pink multiply layer to see how it looked

(first attempt vs final colors) (also im sorry for the low quality procreates timelapse is wack)

ironically enough it actually created a really cool looking color palette which was not what i was going for. so i kept testing colors for a bit; the shadow is hot pink, and i ended up going for a bit of a desaturated green as a base / overlay because it mellowed out the pinkness. i also put both the base and the shadow on a darken (50%) layer so that the og colors peek through a bit more compared to a multiply layer. in the end tho, i ditched pink and went for a saturated red

the green also makes for a nice complimentary color to the red, and it overall has that home-y, warm but playful feeling i wanted to include ⬇️

i added a highlight layer (color dodge, 82%) so that it pops a bit more, and also bc i knew i was gonna draw a big lamp on their right in the bg. speaking of the bg i made it a green/yellow hue so that the base for green on ivan n till make sense, and it ended up working for the best cuz the red acts as a nice contrast

(admittedly i think if the lighting of the room is green the shadow should also be green, but tbh i tend prioritize contrast as much as possible regardless cuz it looks nice 🤡 even if it fails to make sense realistically its for the vibes)

^ i ended up remedying this a little bit by adding bits of green to the shadows on ivan n tills hair and clothes, and also because its fairly complementary to the pink palette i have going in for the shadows and even the highlights (esp on ivan)

i also decided to shade in dark parts in the lineart so that it pops a little more

looking at the values also really help! esp in comics, where each panel can have its own lighting depending on what angle ure drawing. u can do this easily by adding a pure black layer above the entire piece, and setting it to color (100%)

for me the values actually made me realize things that may look too similar, which usually leads to me changing the color. for example, the couch and stuffed animals behind ivan and till were actually a lot darker before i changed it. bc it kinda blended into ivti a bit, it also got the eyes’ attention away from them. i ended up adjusting their hue and values so that it matches the bg, and ivan and till stick out more (alongside other color adjustments) ⬇️

changing the lineart also helps quite a bit! i made the lineart for ivan and till a little darker, while the bg elements got a darker green instead so that the bg elements dont take as much attention

looking at b&w values also helped me realize that the og pink i was using for the panels was a little too dark, so i made it significantly lighter so that the panels stick out more (esp bc they take huge precedence in the second page)

and finally when i pick all the colors and am satisfied with them, i merge everything into one final color layer for easier rendering :> procreate (and im sure other programs) allows for color / hue adjustments so you can def play around with those!

as for the harana / first ivantill comic i made, it had all the similar steps of the recent comic so ill just talk a little bit about the palette

so im ngl this comic was a bit of a struggle to color for me,, cuz i wanted it to be romantic but it was set at night. usually that dictates cooler tones and colors, but i was aiming for something warm. thats when i figured i could just let tills room wash an orange color, which would help with making warm lighting but also help till and ivan stick out again from the surrounding darkness / blues

i went with a purple base, cuz i thought it was a nice warm ish color at night and it makes blue and orange pop. i also figured that i could make the base both purple since the highlights are the most attention grabbing / contrasting colors

also used the moonlight as rim lighting so that ivan sticks out a little more,, i also figured that tills room would be projecting harsher lighting over the moonlight

lighting it this way also allows for nice color contrast regardless of what character is in the center: ivans outside but awashed in orange lighting (from tills room), and tills inside but hes sticking his head out a little so hes noticeably purple. it allows for characters to stand out while also being pleasing to the eye

and im ngl i cheated a bit again 😅 i think till shouldve projected a shadow on ivan a couple of times and the highlights might be too harsh but again i just prioritized making their facial expressions seen LOL

for this one i didnt use any layer modes aside from (if i remember correctly) a purple multiply layer and overlay for shadows and base respectively

and thats pretty much my process for figuring out the colors !!

TLDR; i look for the mood or tone im going for, try to make interesting contrasts / complimentary colors and i also double check if each character sticks out by checking values :> it really helps me too to play around a LOT, i think it takes me like an hour or just 30 mins to figure out what colors to use and also adjusting it significantly when i merge everything together

I don't have a digitizing board, so I do everything on my cell phone (or just draw in my notebook)

You know, I REALLY want to do a webcomic too, but I don't know where to start. Seeing you do this is really cool, and it seems like it's something you really enjoy.

I just wanted to say that you and a lot of people out there are great inspirations to me

I don't know if what I use is really helpful if you're a beginner! I use Photoshop (which usually involves a subscription payment) and a Wacom Cintiq since I primarily do art as a professional for my job. Those are expensive and a little intimidating if you don't have the resources for it yet! Otherwise, you can get Procreate for iPad/tablets for only $10, and it works pretty well...plus now there's an animation program for it, also cheap! There's also Sketchbook Pro, which has some great drawing tools and is now free!

Otherwise...honestly, there's absolutely nothing wrong with drawing your comics on paper and then scanning or photographing them if you want to share them. I spent years and years drawing comics on paper before I moved to doing everything digitally!

I know it can be intimidating, but if you want to start in on a webcomic, the best way to do so is just to start! A lot of comics is learning as you go...what things you're capable of and what you still need to learn. The nice thing about comics is that it forces you to try all sorts of aspects of art! If you're worried about starting, I would say try and pick a project that is small and self-contained instead of launching into your big epic first, and create a big backlog of pages before posting anything so that you don't feel overwhelmed with releasing things on time and can get a sense for how long schedule-wise it takes you to make one page.

Procreate Dreams

I've been playing around in Procreate Dreams for about a week or so now, and I think I've got enough of a handle on the software to offer a fair review! If you're interested in hearing my thoughts, click the read-more below.

A little context before we get started; I have two degrees in animation, but they're both in 3D. My personal specialty is tech and articulation/rigging, but I think my background puts me in a unique position with Procreate Dreams; I know all of the theory behind animation, but I'm not going into Procreate Dreams and comparing it to a professional-grade software I generally prefer to use (like Toon Boom Harmony, for example).

So, let's get into it!

First Impressions

I hated it. I opened the software, it crashed. I couldn't figure out how to enable onion skins. I couldn't increase or decrease the exposure of my frames. I couldn't figure out how to swap to the eraser. I was confused, I was frustrated, and then I realized that I was expecting to jump in and animate without taking the time to learn the software first.

Once I stopped trying to strong-arm it and started looking up documentation, things got a little easier.

Re-Thinking My Approach

Procreate Dreams isn't comparable to any other animation software I've used before. The UI is different, there's a focus on gesture over buttons, and everything about it is meant to be minimalistic. None of this reflects poorly on the program, in my opinion. It's different. You can't go to Procreate Dreams and get mad at it for not being like the other software out there in terms of how it's used. In fact, I think one area of Dreams that should be applauded is the sheer ambition on display. It's a hybrid of traditional frame-by-frame animation and offers a slimmed down version of some of After Effects' most useful compositing & motion graphics tools. That's just plain cool.

The Good

For those of you who've used Procreate Dreams, you may find it's a little... difficult to see all the good it has to offer through the muddied waters it's launch-day bugs kicked up, but under all the grime, there's a little bit of gold.

Dreams is a one time, $20 USD purchase. That's huge in terms of affordability and accessibility in the software market right now.

The "Perform" option is great, and I think we'll see the longer that it's out, the more creative people are going to get in using it. I've already seen people create gorgeous parallax on their illustrations.

Simple compatibility with Procreate is a huge win. I'm finding my pipeline uses both software together.

The UI is a mixed bag overall, but I find the ability to move between flipnote mode and timeline mode to be great. It keeps the screen free, but I can still access the features I need while doing frame-by-frame.

The move/filters option is a great way to add a little compositing magic to your work.

The Bad

The "bad" here exclusively covers issues with the software as intended. Bugs will be covered under "The Ugly" below.

The lack of a lasso tool is a huge setback. I've seen people saying that it doesn't make sense not to have that feature at launch, especially when it's part of Procreate, but I understand why it may have been difficult to implement in conjunction with the move/perform/warp options. If you save a warp on top of an illustration, then cut and move part of the drawing, how is the warp/local translation data applied to that image? Does the pixel remember it's movement, or is it applied on top of the drawing? There's a lot to consider.

Similarly, the "reference" tool in Procreate would be an excellent tool to add color to layers beneath current layers. "Add Reference Track" would be great! That said, I think this conflicts with the move/warp tools like the above.

The timeline is a time sink. I should be able to adjust the exposure of my frames easily and consistently. As of right now, I have an 80-20 shot of selecting my layer or grabbing the handle for exposure. A small button on the edge of each frame (like a dot) would improve this considerably.

As far as I can tell, you can't mask a group onto another group.

No double-tap on the Apple Pencil 2 to swap to the eraser. This one I'm not sure about; it runs in Procreate, it seems simple to implement here... though it'd be great to see it customizable.

The Ugly

This includes bugs and other issues that are separate from the features (or lack thereof) of Procreate Dreams.

Crashes are frequent. I haven't used the software reliably during any of my sessions so far, but Dreams' autosave feature is extremely strong and very forgiving, so I have lost no work.

My pen pressure become erratic at times, necessitating a restart of the software.

Sometimes my pen will stop working, though other features in the app will continue to run.

The good news is, I think that Dreams is overall a huge win for artists and animators worldwide. Everything that's not working about Dreams will hopefully be resolved in future updates. I'd encourage anyone who wants to try animating for the first time to pick it up-- with the understanding it might take some time to get used to/master.

Pokemon Horizons Episode 73 Review - Meeting Kleavor

You know what I’ve noticed? Horizons likes to make recurring tropes be a staple in their episodes. In the beginning, it was Friede and Captain Pikachu swooping in to save the kids or shoving things into off-screen land. Now, it’s having the group be separated for some important occasion. In the previous arc, Liko was forcibly separated from Roy and Dot back around Episode 64 and 65. Now, it seems to be a recurring thing for this arc where the group have been separated for the second time in a row now. I get it’s to have the kids battle Kleavor on their own, but they could have done it in a less contrived way.

Anyways, gripes aside, this was a good episode! It was nice showcasing the second Hisuian Pokemon in this anime and fifth of the Six Heroes that eventually became the fourth to join the group. I like that Kleavor had some sort of history with Lapras with it being the reason why it had the scars on its neck. I also liked the twist that they actually get along and not have bad blood. The way the other Hero Pokemon tend to pop out whenever another Hero Pokemon shows up is interesting in itself and it makes me want to see more interactions. I also like its personality a lot. 

Kleavor is actually a very formidable fighter. I think this is the first time a Hero Pokemon deliberately knocked all out the Pokemon before joining them. I actually liked how this battle was played out. Kleavor moved around a lot, which gives the kids a bigger desperation to follow and continue their battle. I liked how they strategized by using the bamboos. Roy clearly was the biggest help in the group because of that. I also like how Liko took the initiative and terastalized Floragato, which then caused Roy and Dot to do the same. Man, if Kleavor was this strong, I can’t wait to see what Entei and Rayquaza are capable of when they go all out.

I think this is also the first instance where a memory of Lucius and the past is so clear and not be shrouded with pink fog like before. Lucius looks like he could be an older male version of Liko, but with blue hair and a braid on the back. The memory makes it seem like Lucius has visited Hisui which was how he got Kleavor to become his Pokemon. The most important aspect is that the memory is actually in Terapagos’s perspective, but Lucius says a name we haven’t heard before: Rystal.

By process of elimination, it’s easy to deduce that she is the person dressed in green in the opening with Lucius and Gibeon. Now, I wonder about who she is. Is she Lucius’s wife? I mean, if Liko is a direct descendant of Lucius, they, at least, could’ve procreated before he left for Laqua. If not, then Lucius could be related to Liko by another relative of his. Remember that Lucius is never stated to be a direct ancestor of Liko’s. If he was, Diana would’ve said something in an earlier episode. If not, then she could be Roy’s ancestor which could be why the Ancient Pokeball was in his possession, as it’s never explained how it was there and only that he’s had it for a long time. If those two aren’t the case, then maybe Rystal was Lucius’s sister, who could be Liko’s direct ancestor. I’m as invested in this story as the Rising Volt Tacklers are.

It’s sad to see Perrin leave the group, but her words do make it sound like she’ll show up again—perhaps when they encounter Entei? However, in place of Perrin, Diana confirms her return in the ending of the this episode. This gets me stoked because Diana is a great character and I can’t wait to see her again!
