New Comics Time!
And we're back to biweekly. Well, I gave it a try.
Batgirl #7 - Once again, my position with this issue is that while there are elements and choices that don't work for me, thre's also enough that interesting that I'm willing to overlook some of the weaker parts. Right now, I'm inclined to way the positive over the negative, but I also know that this next issue is going to make or break it for me.
To start with the positive: I really loved Goodhart's art for this issue--I think even better than Miyzawas--and Spicer's colors gave a beautiful warmth to it all. I also really like the emotional core of the relationship it showed between Shiva and Carolyn, especially the center spread of them dancing. Finally, there's that little moment where Siva says "parents are to be avenged" which is just such an interesting little remark in the context that this is a Shiva who care on some level about being a mother to Cass and that this is a story she is arranging to be shared specifically in the event of her death. It makes me wonder about the line delivery in the recording she's shared and the agendas she has with it.
On the less positive side, I came into this issue really hoping for Detroit and the fact that there was no Detroit and it was instead all more magic kung fu stuff was disappointing. Magic kung fu is not my preferred flavor of storytelling for Cass. Part of what makes Cass and Shiva so interesting is the fact that they're largely based in human determination and skill--not in having a blood magic ninja uncle.
Birds of Prey #21 - Overall a fun issue, though nothing really stood out out me in it. I feel like Thompson's still doing a pretty good job of balancing her cast and I did like the part where Barbara was sending out the call to auxiliary allies--prime Oracle move right there.
Action Comics #1085 - This was a fun enough part one of two. I like Guidry's lines, but reading this just really struck me about how Patricia Mulvihill's colors just don't do it for me these days. I appreciate her work on older Wonder Woman comics, but there's just so much cool stuff happening with comics colors these days, that hers just feel boring and almost like they're taking away from the art in comparison.
Aquaman #4 - Not much to say on this one but still--why a lower case lambda gate? What are the lore implications? I want to know!
Batman and Robin #20 - I appreciate the callback being made with the paper boat here. Anyway, all there artists on this issue did a good job and the different styles came together nicely. Plotwise, I am still here for how much Bruce is hallucinating this storyline. I also appreciate seeing more of Damian and his thoughts and feelings through his journal.
Batman: Dark Patters #5 - Not sure if I have much to say about this one other than the fact that it's maintaining the quality and trajectory of the last issue.
Fire and Ice: When Hell Freezes Over #1 - We'll see where this goes, but this wasn't really doing much for my. Bryne's art isn't as appealing to me as Bustos' was. I'm also a little confused as to how the body-swapping functioned but hopefully next issue will clear that up.
Absolute Flash #2 - There's some really interesting stuff with time going on this issue. I think it's neat how Wally is finding himself somewhat unmoored as a result of his new powers and I'm looking forward to seeing more. The art also continues to be strong.
Batman/Superman: World's Finest #38 - I decided to pop back in for We are Yesterday though I will not be reading the bizarro world story that's apparently happening afterwards. I thought this was a fun story that could easily be a contained oneshot if it weren't serving as a prologue.
Zatanna #3 - I really took some time to stare at that gorgeous spread. I think I am starting to loose the thread of the plot of this reading monthly. I did enjoy the Clayface stuff but I also forgot how we ended up here in the first place. Anyway, vampires is always a fun direction.
The New Gods #5 - I really loved the little prelude of this issue with Lightray and Black Racer. The fight back on New Genesis continues to be gorgeously illustrated, but I am finding the smaller scale drama of Scott and Orion on earth to be more interesting and it is a little disappointing that it's getting less focus.
Detective Comics #1096 - Other people have said this I'm sure but Barbara did not need to be Batgirl here :/ Otherwise, I am interested in the potential of Scarlett Martha sticking around.
Catwoman #75 - I enjoyed seeing the various heist/con stuff going on in this issue. I don't have much else to say though.
Titans #22 - Continues to be Eh. Some month I will actually stop reading this comic.
Challengers of the Unknown #5 - This was a strong conclusion to this mini. The decision and desire to live over the obsession of death being the thing that counteracted the omega effect was a little straightforward and cheesy, I admit, but also I am a sucker for it. Reading this whole mini was fun with how it tied into the various over-arching plots of the DC universe.
Nightwing #125 - Francavilla's art was strong as always and really set a nice visual tone for Blüdhaven. This was just a fun creepy little story--well executed on Water's part. Like last issue, this one also felt like it was ending on a breath--the second to last note in the measure, just before everything hits the ground.

Roderick Kingsley Appreciation Post!

It's time for me to gush over yet another of my favorite characters ever: Roderick Kingsley, AKA the Hobgoblin! He is a Spider-Man villain that was introduced in 1983 to replace the Green Goblin, who at the time was dead. (And as we all know, everyone stays dead in comic books. Cough.)
As much as I do love Norman Osborn/Green Goblin, the Hobgoblin actually managed to quickly climb the ranks into being my favorite Marvel villain, and one of my favorite characters of all time. He is the ONLY comic book character that I've gone out of my way to collect every individual issue that he appears in, and it's the piece of my physical comic collection that I am the most proud of to be honest.
The character has a bit of a messy history behind the scenes, but I truly believe he came out all the better for it. Beneath the read-more, I'll talk a bit about that complicated history, how I think it benefited the character, the direction that more recent stories have been taking him in, and just why I think he's so great!
The Hobgoblin was created by writer Roger Stern in 1983's The Amazing Spider-Man #238. A thug stumbles across one of Norman Osborn's Green Goblin lairs accidentally as he is running away from Spider-Man. Norman Osborn was thought dead at the time - later comics would reveal he was actually alive (GASP!) and hiding away in Europe - so the thug turned to a man obscured in shadows and sold him the Green Goblin equipment. The shadowy man made his own modifications to the Green Goblin costume, altered the formula that gave the Green Goblin his powers so that it wouldn't have the unfortunate side effect of insanity, and set out to make a name for himself as New York's new supervillain, the Hobgoblin. Oh - probably worth noting that he also coldly kills the thug that sold him the equipment by blowing up his truck. Good ol' Hobby.
The Hobgoblin quickly established himself as an exciting, formidable new A-list Spider-Man villain. Very early on, he was established as a behind-the-scenes manipulator that brainwashed people to wear his costume and stand in as patsies to protect himself from prosecution or harm. In one of his earliest appearances, he brainwashes small-time crook Lefty Donovan to stand in as the Hobgoblin as a way to test and monitor his modified Goblin formula and avoid giving himself any negative side effects -- he has Lefty killed by remote-controlling his glider to smash into a building when the conditioning begins to lift. He sought to become the next Kingpin of Crime, blackmailing anyone he could and seeking out any and all of Norman Osborn's equipment and journals in his various secret lairs.
All the while, the intrigue of the Hobgoblin's true identity continued to build. Just like the Green Goblin in his early days, the Hobgoblin's identity was a juicy mystery. He was frequently shown scheming by himself in his lair, concealed by shadows. A bunch of different comic covers teased that this just might be the issue where he's finally unmasked. A TON of characters were being painted as red herrings with motive and means to be the Hobgoblin. He brainwashed and framed Flash Thompson so that the public and the authorities would believe he was the Hobgoblin -- and of course, the readers knew that Flash was being set up. The Hobgoblin's shadowy secret identity is even shown talking familiarly with Mary Jane Watson in one scene to raise the anticipation even more.
I don't want to say too much more about the Hobgoblin's big identity mystery days, because truthfully that is not why I love the character. I feel like it's hard to discuss the Hobgoblin as a character without also taking about all the behind-the-scenes drama at Marvel. So, long story short, Roger Stern left the book before he was able to reveal the Hobgoblin's identity, the character was written by a few other people that all had their own idea of who the Hobgoblin should be under the mask, tensions were high and writers were openly trying to upset each other.... which led to the Hobgoblin being revealed as Ned Leeds, an investigative reporter and close friend of Peter Parker. Worse still, the Hobgoblin was unmasked as Ned Leeds after Leeds' death in another comic. No big, personal final confrontation with the unmasked Hobgoblin. No hearing from Ned Leeds himself why he was doing this. Hobgoblin was revealed to be a man that was already dead.
Ned Leeds was killed by assassins. It turned out that the assassins were hired by Jason Macendale, AKA Jack O'Lantern, a fellow Halloween-themed Spidey villain that participated in the gang war to be the next Kingpin. Jason was quick to adopt the Hobgoblin identity for himself and stayed in that role for 10 years. He was.... fine? I guess? He took on a much more scary and demonic appearance in the costume than Ned Leeds ever did. He even gets literally possessed by a demon for a bit. At one point he gets cybernetic enhancements and gets this cool robot eye thing. Problem is, he never really got taken seriously, and fell quickly down through the ranks of villain tiers. It didn't help matters that Norman Osborn returned from the dead and took his spot as #1 Goblin villain, rendering the Hobgoblin pretty unnecessary.
But then, in 1997, 10 years after Ned Leeds' reveal as the Hobgoblin, a mini-series called "Hobgoblin Lives" came out, written by original Hobgoblin creator Roger Stern. Now, I was born in 1987 - the same year Ned was killed and revealed. I grew up with the Jason Macendale Hobgoblin. So this miniseries was THE first exposure I ever got to a Hobgoblin that wasn't Jason. Jason is arrested, he reveals to the public that Ned Leeds was the Hobgoblin before he killed him and took his costume (a fact that only a few characters were aware of before), and then a man claiming to be the REAL original Hobgoblin visits him in prison and murders him for being an embarrassment and tarnishing his brand.
Uh, I'm sorry..... what?????
I get that the Hobgoblin mystery was a messy one. I get that the different writers all laid breadcrumbs to different solutions and things got extremely tangled up. I get that the Ned Leeds reveal was disappointing and anticlimactic. But as far as first impressions go, Hobgoblin Lives is damn near PERFECT.
So, basically Roger Stern jumped in to solve the Hobgoblin mystery once and for all -- by revealing him as the character he originally intended him to be way back in 1983, Roderick Kingsley. A shady fashion designer also created by Roger Stern that first appeared in 1980's Spectacular Spider-Man #43, who was known for stealing his competitor's designs and taking credit for their work. Ned Leeds, it turns out, was just another brainwashed patsy that took the fall for Roderick Kingsley, the REAL Hobgoblin. Back in the "Ned Leeds" era of comics, there were scenes where the Hobgoblin and Kingsley were in the same room together, which was explained as Daniel Kingsley, Roderick's meek and submissive brother, posing as him for corporate meetings and whatnot that Roderick didn't want to attend.
So like..... I understand the opinion that Daniel posing as Roderick is kind of cheating the audience that was invested in the mystery and keeping track of all the different clues and red herrings. I understand that the "evil twin" angle is a bit tacky. But speaking as someone whose first glimpse into this identity mystery storyline was its long-overdue conclusion, I honestly kind of LOVE the Daniel twist. Everything given to us in Hobgoblin Lives serves to cement things we already knew about the character. Roderick Kingsley was already known for stealing fashion ideas and performing shady corporate takeovers, so it's kind of perfect that he also stole and made cosmetic changes to the Green Goblin brand? We'd seen the Hobgoblin brainwash patsies multiple times already, so it makes sense that Ned Leeds was just another name on that list. We'd seen the Hobgoblin dress those brainwashed patsies in his costume and use them as stand-ins to protect himself, which is probably an escalation of what he did to Daniel their entire lives - that was where that "man behind the curtain" stuff started for him.
So, ultimately, we were given a much more satisfactory conclusion to the mystery of the Hobgoblin's identity. He wasn't a dead guy anymore - he was a charismatic, manipulative, scheming criminal mastermind (my favorite type of villain!) with a line of mind-controlled fall guys in his wake.
I mentioned earlier that I have all of Roderick Kingsley's individual issues that he appeared in - I did NOT bother to collect Macendale's appearances. I have Ned Leeds' Hobgoblin issues, because he is acting on Kingsley's behalf and it's up in the air when it is Leeds behind the mask and when it is Kingsley. I may eventually start hunting Macendale's issues down just to say I HAVE EVERY HOBGOBLIN APPEARANCE EVER, but my love for the Hobgoblin is NOT love for Jason Macendale. Even as a kid, I found him very underwhelming and lame despite LOOKING really really cool. So the fact that Hobgoblin Lives immediately starts with his death, and the original Hobgoblin saying that Jason disgraced his legacy, was a pretty cool way for 10-year-old me to be introduced to this character.
In his next appearance after Hobgoblin Lives, Roderick Kingsley goes up against Norman Osborn. As I said, Osborn's return kind of rendered the Hobgoblin obsolete. I found this story fun because it starts to show us the difference between the two supervillains as they try to outwit and outmaneuver each other, and it starts a very long-running feud between the two. Kingsley manipulates Osborn into breaking him out of prison and attempting revenge on Daniel, falsely claiming to still have an Osborn journal that reveals he is the Green Goblin. Ultimately, it's clear that Osborn is the superior villain, as he already knows Spider-Man's secret identity, and he manages to steal control of Kingsley's businesses and holdings away from him. Kingsley is shaken by these reveals but decides to retire in the Caribbean with the money he still has left. (I also want to say, in one of his most recent appearances, HE GOT HIS BUSINESSES BACK FROM OSBORN WOOOO)
Since then, Roderick Kingsley has started taking a drastically different approach, which I do believe was needed for his character to help differentiate him from Norman Osborn. Kingsley now travels the world, creating different supervillain aliases (which are all, of course, stolen and repurposed) and rents those brands out to the highest bidder. He is arming and suiting up a small army of D-list supervillains in exchange for a cut of their profits. Again, I feel that this change is perfect, and cements things we already knew about his character. Kingsley was a fashion designer that stole ideas and made them his own brand -- even his Hobgoblin persona is stolen Green Goblin gear. Now, he is taking that to the next level with his stolen supervillain fashions. Mysterion is a blatant copy of Mysterio, Devil-Spider is extremely similar to Tarantula, etc.
When Phil Urich killed Daniel, Roderick's brother in the Hobgoblin costume (because of course it was another patsy), and stole the Hobgoblin identity for himself as Macendale had done before, Kingsley is at first furious that his brand is getting stolen again and fights Urich, but eventually sees the potential in him and allows him to continue being the Hobgoblin for a cut of his profits - until Urich switches sides and starts working for Norman Osborn and kills the Hobgoblin, which is Kingsley's mind-controlled butler as yet another patsy.
Kingsley, both in and out of costume, has always been a very shady-corporate-takeover type of villain, focusing a lot on wealth and power no matter who he inconveniences or kills along the way. This becomes especially apparent in the Axis event, where Hobgoblin is given his own miniseries. Good guys are now evil, bad guys are now good, moralities are switched..... annnnnnnd Kingsley is still an awful person despite being a "good guy". He takes on a motivational speaker type of role, selling superhero franchises and Hobgoblin merchandise to make as much money as he can. (Is it bad that I WANT the Hobgoblin merchandise he was selling??) His Axis miniseries is a VERY fun time, poking a lot of fun at his history and highlighting that the man is still very much a sociopath despite his changed morality. How GREAT is this clip??

Although he's always #2 to Norman Osborn - and that is a constant source of frustration to him - Kingsley is a GREAT villain. He is always scheming, always hiding behind yet another mind-controlled patsy, always ready to profit off of his next stolen idea, and I think the convoluted mess that was his initial mystery arc only helped to cement his legacy as a behind-the-scenes mastermind who is always one step ahead, and always willing to throw other people into harm's way to save his own butt. The Hobgoblin Lives miniseries, and everything that's come since with the character, has only built on what we already knew and loved about him, and pushed him out of Norman Osborn's shadow despite having literally stolen his franchise.
The chaos and drama behind the scenes at Marvel will always be an unfortunate part of this character's history, but I still love him SO MUCH. I think everything in the story that came from it has helped form a formidable, manipulative, cold-hearted villain that will always be one of my favorite characters of all time. More than once now, he has retired to some tropical, beautiful corner of the world, comfortably sipping drinks as some poor fool dies in his place. No matter what happens, no matter how dead he seems to be, you CANNOT convince me that his canon ending will be anything less than that.

► RELATIONS
FATHER: Harrison Thompson: A very successful and intelligent business man. To the public he’s known as a loving father, passionate, and successful. “Image is everything” as he would always say. Everything needed to be perfect and in its proper place. His cars, home, and appearance were always kept to the highest of standards; at least in public. After a long day of work he was known to come home and drink away his stress, with expensive scotch after expensive scotch. Before long he’d forget about keeping up appearances oe maintaining the perfect life and take out his frustrations on his family. It would always start verbal but it would always escalate from there. Flash became the main focus of this as he reminded him too much of himself, or as he would say, “How can you remind me so much of myself but be such a failure.”
He finally started cutting Flash some slack once he got into MIT, but after being expelled and getting injured he was dead to him.
MOTHER: Rose Thompson: She was a nice enough woman but her marriage slowly wore her down into being a husk of her former self. So much of her time and effort was spent trying to stay on her Husband’s good side that she eventually gave up on trying to defend her son. She would tell him to just shut up and keep his nose down. Tell him to not make his father mad. To listen to his father.
SIBLINGS: Jessica Thompson: Flash’s little sister. She’s nice, sweet, smart, and innocent. She’s about ten years younger than him. She was labeled a miracle child due to fertility issues with their parents. With that title also came favoritism. She was the perfect child to their parents, and was treated substantially better by their father. Always being praised for being pretty, smart, and talented. He didn’t resent her for it, but he’d be lying if he said seeing it didn’t hurt. She’s the one he misses the most since he’s been estranged.
EXTENDED FAMILY: Not close to anyone in particular
BEST FRIEND: He’s never really had a best friend. He’s always been on the more popular time but his personality is ultimately for show. He needs to be perceived. He needs people to find value in him, see him as worthy in ways that his father never would. This has resulted in most of his friends only getting to know this shallow facade of who he is which has kept anyone from feeling close enough to become a true best friend to him.
ADVERSARY: Either his Dad or if we add Jack O Lantern to the plot him
PARTNER(S): No significant romantic partners, and none current

Peter Parker & Flash Thompson Masterlist
A Soft Place to Land (ao3) - Ink_Vault betty/ned, peter/flash N/R, 98k
Summary: "With great power comes great responsibility." Yeah, right. More like, with great power comes stab wounds and bloody sheets and a hero complex that could take down even the strongest of men. And Peter, well, he isn't the strongest of men. Not to mention that Peter's hero complex doesn't exactly extend to himself.
May still doesn’t know that he’s Spiderman. Because of this, she also doesn’t know about his increased metabolism, hunger, strength, sensitivity, everything. He didn’t really notice, for the first few weeks, until he hears May on the phone with one of her work friends discussing how she didn’t realize how much teenage boys eat. Peter immediately stopped eating.
Flash knows something is up. He knows the signs, or at least he thinks he does. And he's going to get to the bottom of things, one way or another.
Aye Oh- Let's Go! (ao3) - FrozenHearts wanda/vision T, 12k
Summary: Flash knows something is up with Peter.
He sets about to prove it to the Decathalon Team.
Bullying a Spider (ao3) - Jaidan T, 4k
Summary: Eugene "Flash" Thompson learns that being a bully can have negative consequences...
BY THE WAY (ao3) - hellotomyoldheart peter/flash T, 17k
Summary: Peter knows Flash, now. In a way he didn’t before. Sure, he knew about his dying dad and his false bravado and his strange stillness but he didn’t know Flash. Now he does.
Flash Thompson's father dies the week after Thanksgiving. That's how it starts.
Do I Deserve This? (ao3) - id_rather_be_reading_3 T, 72k
Summary: When the Avengers find a malnourished, traumatized, enhanced teen in a Hydra base, they manage to convince SHIELD that the kid is better off in the Compound than the SHIELD Headquarters.
Peter Parker thinks his luck might finally be changing for the better, until he hears a conversation between Captain America and Iron Man that terrifies him--if the superheroes find out that Peter was an assassin for Hydra, he feels certain they'll kick him out--or worse, send him to the Raft for a punishment he surely deserves.
Can the Spider manage to keep his bloodied past a secret from a room full of mind readers, spies and military? It'll certainly prove harder than he'd thought.
Do Not Cross The Line (ao3) - MARVELously3000 N/R, 3k
Summary: Although it's no excuse for the way he treats Peter, Flash's home life is not good.
Or Flash hurts Peter and Tony goes down to the school. Flash admits something that Tony can't just walk away from and forget.
flash thompson's spider-man conspiracy (ao3) - tempestaurora T, 4k
Summary: Flash Thompson has been making Spider-Man conspiracy videos for a long time, and Peter knows that making the WHO IS SPIDER-MAN? documentary is going to feed the flames, but he doesn't mind.
He also finds Flash's videos hilarious.
Have Them Over (ao3) - canonismybitch ned/peter T, 2k
Summary: Flash likes to host Decathlon meets, but he's never hosted one with his parents present.
OR
Peter and Ned are a cute couple around their Decathlon team, Flash's parents don't approve. That is not stopping him from defending his friends.
It Could Have Been Worse (ao3) - Eqquator G, 5k
Summary: “...and I know you’re all dying to know where we’re going on Friday! Well, I think you’ll be excited to know that we’re actually going to Stark Industries!”
The class’s reaction was instant and dramatic. Several people gasped, someone dropped their pencil, and Peter was surprised Flash’s neck didn’t snap the way he spun around so fast to stare at the boy.
Peter’s own reaction was less excitement and more mild terror.
Peter's class takes a trip to Stark Industries.
Peter Parker (ao3) - Forthelore T, 13k
Summary: The five times that Peter is a hero as Spiderman plus the one time Peter Parker is the hero.
She's my Mother... (ao3) - chibithedragonkitty T, 11k
Summary: It’s Parent Teacher conferences at Peter’s school to talk about his grades and mainly everything else. Though one teacher can’t help but talk about his “lies” along with a certain bully we all know to well.
Though how is it going to turn out when they see that his mother is not what they think
should i hang up my coat and call it a day? (ao3) - starlesbian steve/bucky G, 14k
Summary: Peter Parker has done a pretty good job thus far of hiding his superhero identity. He moved into the Stark Tower with all of the other Avengers, and shortly after Tony adopted him.
But, of course, his school has to plan a field trip to the Stark Tower. His own house. This'll be fun.
Stark Internship (ao3) - spidey567 G, 2k
Summary: Peter’s always had bad luck.
That’s why it doesn’t come as a surprise when Mr Harrington announces the location of the decathlon team’s latest field trip during what initially, seemed like a normal Friday afternoon.
The One Where Everything Goes Well (ao3) - nokurde T, 11k
Summary: ...at least at first.
or
Upon learning his school won a tour of Stark Industries, Peter takes care of everything that could put his identity at risk. Flash didn't get the memo.
When A Parker Met A Stacy (ao3) - Spideyfan62 peter/gwen G, 5k
Summary: However, just as she’d turned to do so, Gwen noticed another student coming over to the guy before he squatted down and helped him pick up his stuff. She couldn’t hear what was being said, but she observed as the second one gently put a hand on the shoulder of the one who’d dropped everything, seemingly making sure he was okay.
“Oh yeah, that’s the friend of mine that I thought you should meet,” Flash explained, coming up to Gwen. “Hey, Peter!”

Ramble of the month February 2024: 90’s MCU phase 5 – transitioning from Secret Wars to Infinity Wars
Having spent much of last month and a fair bit of this one working on submissions to literary agencies for my autism book, this month’s ramble and the one for next month took a bit of a back seat, and as such I’ve still not been able to vary myself away from delving further into my hypothetical Marvel and DC film universes. Apologies to anyone who, like me, were hoping to vary things more. However, hopefully what we cover in this ramble and the next will make up for it, and as April will be Autism Awareness time, I can guarantee something different for then.
By this point, I’m sure readers don’t need as much of a recap on what these posts to do with my 90’s-based MCU are about. Long story short, I’ve done what the meme makers don’t; looked at the comic book and real-world history of Marvel from that era to create an actual 90’s based MCU instead of putting 90’s actors into a present-day MCU. However, as we’re into a fifth phase and well past the 1990’s, we should at least quickly review phases 1-4 first.
Phase 1:
1992: Fantastic Four, Hulk, Iron Man
1993: Thor, Spider-Man, Ant-Man & The Wasp
1994: Captain America: Fantastic Four 2, Iron Man 2
1995: X-Men, Avengers, Daredevil
Phase 2:
1996: Spider-Man 2, Thor: Land of Enchantment, Silver Surfer
1997: Hulk vs Wolverine, Fantastic Four: Doomsday, Iron Man 3
1998: Captain America: Society of Serpents, Daredevil 2, X-Men 2
1999: Avenger 2, Spider-Man 3, Doctor Strange
Phase 3:
2000: Fantastic Four: World War III, Thor: Ragnarök, Daredevil 3
2001: Hulk: Rise of the Leader, X-Men: Fall of the Mutants, Avengers: Under Siege
2002: Doctor Strange 2, The Captain, Spider-Man 4
2003: Captain Britain, Fantastic Four: Enter the Negative Zone, Ghost Rider
Phase 4:
2004: Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Secret Wars: Part I
2005: Excalibur, Defenders, Ghost Rider 2
2006: X-Factor, Secret Wars: Part II, Heroes For Hire
2007: Namor the Submariner, Doctor Strange 3, Iron Man: Enter The Mandarin
As discussed in previous rambles, phase 1 was all about establishing the MCU and its characters, phase 2 was about the expansion and development of the continuity, while phase 3 was mostly about many characters and teams losing, being put on the back foot and so on. Phase 4 then covered Secret Wars, which temporarily deprived Earth of some major MCU heroes to put them through a real alien war, and in the process also allowed some other heroes to come to the fore. Phase 5 then becomes about following on from some of those plot threads while beginning the set-up for this MCU’s version of the Infinity War. So, let’s quickly show you the phase 5 slate and then get right into the details of these would-be films.
Phase 5:
2008: Spider-Man 5, Fantastic Four: Unthinkable, Ms Marvel
2009: Elektra, Black Panther 2, Defenders 2
2010: X-Men: Proteus, Spider-Man 6, Ant-Man 2
2011: Silver Surfer 2, Avengers vs X-Men, Ghost Rider 3
Spider-Man 5 (2008) Directed by Matthew Vaughan
Peter Parker/Spider-Man = Wil Weaton
May Parker = Marg Helgenberger
Flash Thompson = Ben Affleck
J. Jonah Jameson = J.K. Simmons
Joseph "Robbie" Robertson = Denzel Washington
Betty Brant = Parker Posey
Ned Leeds = John Barrowman
Eddie Brock = Wentworth Miller
Randy Robertson = Taye Diggs
Harry Osborn = Ryan Phillipe
Mary-Jane Watson = Alison Hannigan
Herman Schultz/Shocker = Patrick Muldoon
Felicia Hardy/The Black Cat = Elisha Cuthbert
Roderick Kingsley/Hobgoblin = Michael Keaton
Quentin Beck/Mysterio = Nathan Fillion
Captain Jean DeWolff = Jessica Biel
Detective Stanley Carter/”Sin Eater” = James Marsden
In the first three Spider-Man films, we built up to Peter befriending the Osborns and dating Gwen, only for the Green Goblin/Death of Gwen story arcs to play out in Spider-Man 3. The fourth film then gave Peter a clash with the Sinister Six as he struggles to come to terms with Gwen’s death. Following Secret Wars, Peter now has the alien costume, and so film 5 is basically the alien costume story arc. Sounding a little too much like the Raimi/Maguire Spider-Man 3? Trust me, it’s not like that and for two key reasons. Firstly, I’m not trying to shoe-horn Venom in for the third act, just set him up for another film. Second, I’ve chosen Wentworth Miller of Prison Break and The Flash fame to play Eddie Brock, and that’s far from being our only change.
In this film, Peter’s occupied trying to stop a series of illusion thefts being committed on behalf of a new “kingpin”, who turns out to be the Hobgoblin, while also having to track down a notorious serial killer called the “Sin Eater”. As the alien costume influences Peter ever more, the question becomes less will he stop all the criminals, but rather will he become one. Matters are further complicated when costume thief Black Cat begins seducing Spider-Man and the alien costume pushes Peter to accept this despite his relationship with Mary-Jane. The film culminates with a chance clash with the Shocker revealing the alien nature of Peter’s costume, forcing him to finally fight it off. Eddie Brock gaining the symbiote is then handled in a credit’s scene.
Direction-wise, I picked Matthew Vaughan as he’s a proven superhero film director due to his work on X-Men: First Class. He’s the fourth director to take a hand on Spider-Man solo film in this hypothetical MCU, with John Hughes having directed the first two, and 3 and 4 being handled by Frank Darabont and Martin Campbell, respectively.
Fantastic Four: Unthinkable (2008) Directed by Roland Emmerich
Reed Richards/Mr Fantastic = Tom Hanks
Susan Storm (Richards)/Invisible Woman = Meg Ryan
Johnny Storm/Human Torch = David Spade
Ben Grimm/Thing = Bryan Cranston
Alicia Masters = Heather Graham
Agatha Harkness = Angela Lansbury
Victor Von Doom/Doctor Doom = Goran Višnjić
Hauptmann = Ronald Guttman
Nick Fury = Tommy Lee Jones
Black Bolt = Pierce Brosnan
Medusa = Elizabeth Hurley
Crystal = Dina Meyer
Gorgon = J.G. Hertzler
Karnak = Alexander Siddig
Triton = Orlando Bloom
T'Challa/Black Panther = Chadwick Boseman
Namor McKenzie/The Submariner = Christian Bale
Barbara "Bobbi" Morse/Mockingbird = Rebecca Romijn-Stamos
Jericho Drumm/Brother Voodoo = Doug E. Doug
Having had the Fantastic Four directed by Leonard Nemoy (films 1-2), Steven Spielberg (films 3-4) and Ridley Scott (film 5), this MCU closes out their share of films under the stewardship of Roland Emmerich, notable for such films as Independence Day, White House Down and Midway. This film adapts the events of the storylines ‘Unthinkable’ and ‘Authoritative Action’, but leaves the events of ‘Hereafter’ to the comics and begins introducing the Infinity Stones. Since non-comics fans and fans who haven’t read those stories won’t get those references, let’s do a quick summary.
In the comics, Doctor Doom turned to magic for an attack on the Fantastic Four, which resulted in Reed and Sue’s son Franklin being taken to hell, and the team having to storm Latveria to get him back. During the incident, Doom scarred Reed before being dragged into hell. Afterwards, Reed seized control of Latveria to dismantle Doom’s arsenal and craft a permanent prison for Doom, one in which Reed would serve as warden. However, when the rest of the team tried to stop Reed, Doom somehow began to possess each in turn, ultimately forcing Reed to kill Ben Grimm just to stop Doom. The events of the Hereafter arc involved a trip into the afterlife to bring Ben back, in the process healing Reed’s scars.
In this film, Franklin is kidnapped and taken to a demon dimension, and Sue leads a rescue team comprised of her, Ben Grimm, Brother Voodoo and the Black Panther to save Franklin while Reed and Johnny attack Doom, aided by the Inhumans and Namor the Submariner. The attack seemingly defeats Doom, after which Reed leads the F4 to Latveria, seizing control of the nation. Fearing Doom is somehow influencing Reed, Nick Fury of SHIELD intervenes along with Mockingbird, Voodoo, Namor and T’Challa, only for the seemingly captured Doom to begin telepathically controlling the other F4 members. Ultimately, Reed manages to force a feedback that wipes Doom’s mind, but in the process, Ben Grimm dies as he does in the comics. With Ben’s death, the Fantastic Four decide to step back from hero work, becoming a think tank called the Future Foundation.
The bulk of the film’s cast is from past films, with the only new addition being mystical nanny Agatha Harkness, played by Angela Lansbury in better keeping with the comics version of the character. As for the Infinity Stone I mentioned, that would be the mind stone, which Doom uses to control the various F4 members until Reed works out Doom is channelling the stone’s power and creates the feedback.
Ms Marvel (2008) Directed by Gates McFadden
Carol Danvers/Ms Marvel = Melissa Joan Hart
Michael Barnett = Brian Krause
J. Jonah Jameson = J.K. Simmons
Frank Gianelli = Rory Cochrane
Tracey Burke = Kate Mulgrew
Tabitha Townsend = Kyla Pratt
Lynn Andersen = Amanda Seyfried
Mystique/Raven Darkholme = Connie Nielsen
Rogue = Anna Paquin
Avalanche = Alessandro Gassmann
Fred J Dukes/Blob = Vince Vaughan
Pyro = Hugh Jackman
Irene Adler/Destiny = Sally Field
When it comes to trying to tackle Carol Danvers in films, one story that’s yet to hit the big screen is the story of her downfall against the X-Man Rogue back when Rogue was part of Mystique’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Indeed, the 90’s animated series of the X-Men is the only adaptation to handle this, and they did it by neatly sidestepping some disturbing backstory. Long story short, there was a story arc in the Avengers comics around the late 70’s/early 80’s where Carol (then codenamed Ms Marvel) was mind-controlled and raped by an extra-dimensional being so he could be reborn in a body compatible with Earth, then after fast-growing to adulthood, his presence caused a bunch of time disruptions. When Carol then agreed to go with this being, the Avengers made no effort to prevent this.
When Chris Claremont wrote Rogue into Avengers Annual 10 and showed Rogue rocking Carol’s powers, the question that came to be asked was why Carol hadn’t sought out the Avengers upon returning to Earth, and the answer was made clear. The team hadn’t shown any real concern for Carol during her strange accelerated pregnancy, and then let her go off with a blatantly mind-controlling rapist from another dimension. As such, telling the story of Carol clashing with Rogue and the Brotherhood should never be an exact re-telling. Claremont’s story in Avengers Annual 10 was as much about correcting what the writer of the main comics at that time had written, and with film adaptations, you’re better off just taking a different path entirely.
In this case, we’re showing Carol working as an investigative journalist for a Daily Bugle-owned women’s magazine, who uses the Ms Marvel identity to tackle crime where needed. This is based on her original run in the comics, so we have Jameson borrowed from the Spider-Man films while using the magazine staff from the comics for supporting roles. As for the villains, roles from past films like Mystique and Pyro are combined with newly cast actors to give us our second MCU Brotherhood. The film draws in a mix of acting talent, with Melissa Joan Hart reprising the role of Carol Danvers, and Trek alumni Gates McFadden directing the film. McFadden has played the mutant Plague/Pestilence for three X-films before this and has some directing experience, making her a good choice for this project.
Elektra (2009) Directed by Roxann Dawson
Elektra Natchios = Leonor Varela
Stick = Scott Glenn
Stone = Sigourney Weaver
Kirigi = Daniel Henney
Frank Simpson/Nuke = John Cena
Matsu'o Tsurayaba = Hiroyuki Sanada
Kwannon = Kelly Hu
Turk Barrett = Gary Dourdan
The story of Elektra following her death in Daredevil is one Fox didn’t quite get right, in large part because they tried to incorporate plot elements and tropes that didn’t tonally fit with the character. Having used two Daredevil films to set her up before giving the character a one-shot solo film, I think the best thing is taking those bits out. Instead, we get the Hand going after the Chaste with Elektra in the middle, and when Elektra proves more than they can handle, they bring in the pill-popping assassin known as Nuke. It’s a straight-up martial arts action film initially, but then becomes a more Punisher-like action film when Nuke comes on the scene.
Trek alumni Roxann Dawson takes the helm because she’s one of the few women I know of that would be directing anything back around this time. Considering that films with female leads are often better handled by female directors, it makes sense to try and make this the case wherever possible. The cast is either retained from past films of picked to be more comic-accurate. Case-in-point, picking American actor Scott Glenn to play Stick rather than English actor Terrence Stamp.
Black Panther 2 (2009) Directed by Tim Burton
T'Challa/Black Panther = Chadwick Boseman
Shuri = Tatyana Ali
Ramonda = Alfre Woodard
T'Chaka = Courtney B. Vance
W'Kabi = Chiwetel Ejiofor
Okoye = Nia Long
Zuri = Joseph Marcell
M'Baku = Idris Elba
Nakia = Lupita Nyong'o
Monica Lynne = Kerry Washington
Baron Macabre = Sterling K Brown
Jerome Beechman/Mandrill = Joaquin Phoenix
Nekra Sinclair = Toks Olagundoye
Kevin Plundarr/Ka-Zar = Chris Hemsworth
Shanna O'Hara = Scarlett Johansson
Zaladane = Jolene Blalock
Everett Ross = Martin Freeman
In Black Panther 2, T’Challa becomes allied with Ka-Zar of the Savage Land when it turns out his hidden jungle in Antarctica houses a cache of Vibranium to rival Wakanda’s. Most would-be Vibranium hunters baulk at trying to gain the Antarctic variety due to the dinosaurs, but soon both nations are threatened when the woman-controlling mutant Mandrill, his adoptive sister Nekra, the Savage Land priestess Zaladane and Wakandan criminal Baron Macabre team up. Due to the inclusion of some of these villains, I opted to switch from Tim Story to Tim Burton from a directing stand-point. This film also features a change of role for a couple of real-world MCU alumni.
Defenders 2 (2009) Directed by Stephen Sommers
Dr Stephen Strange = Johnny Depp
Namor McKenzie/The Submariner = Christian Bale
Bruce Banner/Hulk = John Cusack
Silver Surfer = David Wenham
Valkyrie = Diane Kruger
Kyle Richmond/Nighthawk = Josh Duhamel
Patsy Walker/Hellcat = Mena Suvari
Wong = Will Yun Lee
Clea = Keira Knightley
Jericho Drumm/Brother Voodoo = Doug E. Doug
Dr Anthony Druid = Mark Strong
Daimon Hellstrom = James Van Der Beek
Dr Tania Belinsky (Belinskaya)/Red Guardian = Beatrice Rosen
Dr Arthur Nagan = Julian McMahon
Dr Jerold "Jerry" Morgan = Stellan Skarsgård
Ruby Thursday = Alyssa Milano
Harvey Schlemerman/Chondu the Mystic = Stanley Tucci
Shuma-Gorath = Geoffrey Rush
The Defenders, Marvel’s superhero non-team, return for a second instalment at this point, and I’ve picked Stephen Sommers as director based on him directing a live-action GI Joe film around the same time. In this film, the few routinely active Defenders learn via immigrant Russian doctor and superhero Red Guardian that a team of scientists called the Headmen have stolen the Reality Stone from AIM in an effort to seize world power for themselves. Allying with Namor the Sub-Mariner, the Defenders seek to stop the Headmen while Clea joins with Brother Voodoo, Dr Druid and Daimon Hellstrom to try and bring back Doctor Strange from the extra-dimensional limbo he sacrificed himself to in Doctor Strange 3. At the same time, the Silver Surfer seeks the Hulk. The whole team then comes together when the Headmen open a portal for Shuma-Gorath, in the process transforming into their strange comic-style appearances.
Everyone from Dr Druid on down in the cast list is new. As for why we’re skipping over the original male Red Guardian and focusing on the second female iteration for this MCU, there’s two reasons. First, the second female iteration served as a Defender in the original comics, and second, these MCU rambles are focused on the main film continuity, which in this version of the MCU is strictly cinematic. TV shows, while allowed as tie-ins, are optional content, and while I’d happily allow a TV show to dive in on Black Widow and some other characters, I think a film was and is a bit much for a character with so little solo comics content.
X-Men: Proteus (2010) Directed by LeVar Burton
Storm/Ororo Monroe = Halle Berry
Polaris/Lorna Dane = Jeri Ryan
Wolverine/Logan = Tom Cruise
Peter Rasputin/Colossus = Henry Cavill
Remi LeBeau/Gambit = Zachary Levi
Cyclops/Scott Summers = Patrick Swayze
Jean Grey = Milla Jovovich
Warren Worthington III/Archangel = Neil Patrick Harris
Beast/Hank McCoy = Alec Baldwin
Robert Drake/Iceman = Michael Weatherley
Banshee/Sean Cassidy = Liam Neeson
Dr Moira Mactaggert = Olivia Williams
Mystique/Raven Darkholme = Connie Nielsen
Rogue = Anna Paquin
Avalanche = Alessandro Gassmann
Fred J Dukes/Blob = Vince Vaughan
Pyro = Hugh Jackman
Irene Adler/Destiny = Sally Field
Professor Charles Xavier = Patrick Stewart
Kevin Mactaggert/Proteus = Iain De Caestecker
Joseph Mactaggert = John Hannah
Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane = Bonnie Wright
Danielle Moonstar = Selena Gomez
Jubilee = Chloe Bennett
Everett Thomas/Synch = Christopher Massey
Douglas Ramsey/Cypher = Devon Bostick
With the third X-Men film Fall of the Mutants having split the X-Men up, and a combination of the Secret Wars duology, Excalibur and X-Factor films following events for the divided team, this fourth X-Men film is intended to reunite some of the scattered team into a new whole. It also gives Rogue her defection from the Brotherhood following the events of Ms Marvel. In this film, Moira Mactaggert’s son Proteus emerges as a dangerous mutant and begins a rampage across to Scotland. With Excalibur unavailable, X-Factor is summoned while the X-Men pursue Mystique’s Brotherhood to Scotland. The two teams meet up and reunite when they find Professor X is also with Moira, having been recuperating on Muir Island since being released from a SHIELD hospital (this is set-up over end-credit scenes for Fall of the Mutants and X-Factor).
Direction-wise, the X-Men have been handled initially by Jonathan Demme and then Jonathan Frakes in films bearing their team’s name, while Excalibur was helmed by Christopher Nolan and X-Factor by LeVar Burton. For this film, I’ve put Burton back in the director’s chair. Casting-wise, I imagine same fans will be perplexed by my choice of Chloe Bennett for Jubilee. This is because Bennett is of a mixed ancestry that includes having a Chinese mother, and while the ideal is always to try for exact representation from the comics, there aren’t many actresses active in Hollywood around the time of this film with even one parent of Chinese descent, let alone two.
As such, the question becomes which do you compromise; Jubilee’s racial background or her nationality? My choice, compromise slightly on racial background and bring in some plot threads relating to prejudice against people of mixed race. Quite honestly, characters of mixed race are among those groups under-represented in film and TV, so if I have to compromise, let me at least try and do so in a positive way.
Spider-Man 6 (2010) Directed by Matthew Vaughan
Peter Parker/Spider-Man = Wil Weaton
May Parker = Marg Helgenberger
J. Jonah Jameson = J.K. Simmons
Joseph "Robbie" Robertson = Denzel Washington
Betty Brant = Parker Posey
Ned Leeds = John Barrowman
Eddie Brock/Venom = Wentworth Miller
Randy Robertson = Taye Diggs
Mary-Jane Watson-Parker = Alison Hannigan
Flash Thompson = Ben Affleck
Felicia Hardy/The Black Cat = Elisha Cuthbert
Sha Shan Nguyen = Grace Park
Captain Jean DeWolff = Jessica Biel
Anne Weying = Michelle Williams
Principal Harrington = Viggo Mortensen
Lance Bannon = Hayden Christensen
Gloria "Glory" Grant = Candice Patton
In the sixth of our Spider-Man films, and the last to both start and end with Peter Parker wearing the webs, we showcase Peter and MJ preparing for their upcoming wedding, but the pair are stalked by Eddie Brock, who has now joined with the Venom symbiote and seeks to make Peter’s life hell. He attempts to manipulate the Black Cat into being his co-conspirator as well, preying on her jealousy after the symbiote-free Spider-Man resists her seduction. The story ultimately culminates in Venom trying to force Peter into a no-win situation where he has to choose who to save; Mary-Jane or Felicia. Matthew Vaughan returns to direct, and we get a few extra supporting cast members in lieu of the various villains of Spider-Man 5.
Ant-Man 2 (2010) Directed by Peyton Reed
Hank Pym/Ant-Man = Michael Douglas
Scott Lang/Ant-Man II = Paul Rudd
Maggie Lang = Judy Greer
Cassie Lang = Joey King
William Cross/Crossfire = Ethan Hawke
Taskmaster = Jeffrey Dean Morgan
Alex Gentry/Porcupine = Nick Offerman
Janice Lincoln/Beetle = Naya Rivera
Having left Ant-Man alone in terms of solo films since phase 1, phase 2 marks a return for Hank Pym, who by this point has been out of action since a mental break-down forced him to retire. Now of sound mind again, he tries to deal with tech thief Crossfire, who steals the prototype for a new, more aggressive variant of the Ant-Man suit, the Yellowjacket. However, Hank’s old suit is not safe to use as it clashes with his neuro-chemistry, risking more mental break-down. Even worse, it’s been stolen. In tracking down the Ant-Man suit, Hank encounters desperate divorced father Scott Lang, who stole the suit to get money to cover his daughter’s medical treatment.
With this film, the aim is to pass the mantle of Ant-Man to Scott Lang in a more comics-accurate manner, while at the same time preserving certain casting that the MCU got right, hence why Pym, Scott and Maggie are all retained from the real MCU. In terms of Cassie, I switched to Joey King as she’s had a remarkably steady record of employment for a non-Disney child actress, and I think she’s a great choice to take up this role for the remainder of this hypothetical MCU. Direction-wise, I figured it best to stick with the choices of the real MCU and go for Peyton Reed, having had to go with Sam Raimi on the 90’s-made first Ant-Man of this MCU.
Silver Surfer 2 (2011) Directed by JJ Abrams
Silver Surfer = David Wenham
Thanos = Josh Brolin
Mentor = Michael McKean
Eros/Starfox = Joel McHale
Gamora = Zoe Saldana
Drax the Destroyer = Dean Cain
Adam Warlock = Chris Pine
Pip the Troll = Peter Dinklage
Nebula = Emma Stone
Mar-Vell/Captain Marvel = Jude Law
Following the events of Defenders 2, the Silver Surfer finds himself drawn into yet more Infinity Stone adventures when Kree hero Captain Marvel and the android Drax the Destroyer come to Earth with Adam Warlock, keeper of the Soul Gem. Hot on their heels are Thanos and Nebula, each of whom has begun to seek the Infinity Stones. Worse still, Mar-Vell is dying of cancer. The film is meant to advance the Infinity Stones plot while also adapting the death of Mar-Vell from the comics, not to mention setting up for the Guardians of the Galaxy to appear in the next phase.
For direction, I’ve picked JJ Abrams based on his Star Trek and Star Wars work making him a decent choice for a space-based hero like the Silver Surfer. In terms of casting, we have a few reprises from past films in this 90’s MCU and from the real MCU. However, some shifts have also occurred, most notably with Drax due to wanting to use his original comics origins over the revised MCU/later comics version. The would-be autistic representation of Bautista and Gunn’s Drax quickly become so much farce, so as an autistic person, I’d just as soon avoid that and go down the android route, thanks very much.
Avengers vs X-Men (2011) Directed by Jonathan Frakes
Cyclops/Scott Summers = Patrick Swayze
Jean Grey = Milla Jovovich
Storm/Ororo Monroe = Halle Berry
Wolverine/Logan = Tom Cruise
Peter Rasputin/Colossus = Henry Cavill
Remi LeBeau/Gambit = Zachary Levi
Warren Worthington III/Archangel = Neil Patrick Harris
Rogue = Anna Paquin
Steve Rogers/Captain America = Brad Pitt
Thor = Dolph Lundgren
Janet Van Dyne/Wasp = Catherine Zeta Jones
Iron Man/Tony Stark = Tom Selleck
Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk = Lucy Lawless
T'Challa/Black Panther = Chadwick Boseman
Sam Wilson/Falcon = Will Smith
Peter Parker/Spider-Man = Wil Weaton
Professor Charles Xavier = Patrick Stewart
Carol Danvers = Melissa Joan Hart
Mystique/Raven Darkholme = Connie Nielsen
Avalanche = Alessandro Gassmann
Fred J Dukes/Blob = Vince Vaughan
Pyro = Hugh Jackman
Irene Adler/Destiny = Sally Field
Frank Bohannan/Crimson Commando = Harrison Ford
Louis Hamilton/Stonewall = James Brolin
Martin Fletcher/Super-Sabre = Peter Fonda
Dr Valerie Cooper = Malin Åkerman
Sebastian Gilbreti/Bastion = Bruce Greenwood
Congressman Rev. William Stryker = Eric Roberts
Forge = Jimmy Smits
There have been two occasions in Marvel comics where the X-Men and Avengers have been drawn into direct conflict, at least using multiple issues of a comic and to my knowledge. The first is the 1980’s mini-series X-Men versus Avengers, where the Avengers attempted to arrest Magneto to resume his trial before the world court, while the Soviet Super-Soldiers sought to arrest Magneto for his actions in X-Men #150. As Magneto was part of the X-Men at the time, this naturally put all three teams at odds with each other. The second occasion was the AvX storyline in which Cyclops, Emma Frost, Namor, Colossus and Magik became possessed by the Phoenix Force, something the Avengers tried to prevent and later combat.
While this film draws on the basic concept of both series, that something sets the Avengers and the X-Men at odds with each other, it’s not about arresting Magneto or issues with the Phoenix force. Instead, the issue is Rogue; her status as a mutant terrorist is used to convince the Avengers to apprehend the X-Men. This is bad timing, as the X-Men are working with Rogue to help restore the mind of Carol Danvers. The masterminds of the plot are rabid anti-mutant politician William Stryker and government advisor Sebastian, who in reality is a new form of sentinel in disguise. Luckily, government advisor and secret mutant Forge is suspicious of Bastion and convinces NSA director Dr Valerie Cooper to set up a contingency plan.
As a result, the film builds to a climax where, after the intervention of Spider-Man ends a major fight between the two teams, Bastion unleashes his prime sentinels. Enter Mystique’s expanded Brotherhood in their guise as community service government heroes Freedom Force, and the stage is set for a truly epic battle. Direction-wise, I opted for Jonathan Frakes to helm this entry, and while many actors are reprising roles from past films, everyone from Crimson Commando on down is new to the MCU as of this film.
Ghost Rider 3 (2011) Directed by Mark Steven Johnson
Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider = Connor Trinneer
Roxanne Simpson = Jessica Alba
Eric Brooks/Blade = Jamie Foxx
Rachel Van Helsing = Cote De Pablo
Daimon Hellstrom = James Van Der Beek
Vlad Tepish/Dracula = Mads Mikkelsen
Lilith = Felicity Jones
Mephistopheles = Jeffery Combs
Phase 5 of our 90’s MCU closes out by bringing Johnny Blaze’s time as Ghost Rider to its conclusion, in a story where Johnny teams up with Blade, Rachel Van Helsing and Daimon Hellstrom against Dracula and his daughter Lilith, who are secretly in league with Mephistopheles. The film is partly an original plot and partly an adaptation of the end of the original Ghost Rider run of comics, though it’s far from being the last Ghost Rider film of this MCU. Just as the comics would have others take up the Ghost Rider curse after Blaze, so too will this MCU move onto those later riders in turn. Having used Tim Burton on the first two Ghost Rider films in this MCU, I’ve picked Mark Steven Johnson who handled the 2007 Nicholas Cage Ghost Rider film to take on this third instalment of 90’s MCU Ghost Rider.
This wraps up our look into phase 5 of this 90’s-based MCU; next month, we’ll cover phase 5 of our alternate DC movie universe. Until then, ta-ta for now.

A Disney-themed dance party has been described as "disgusting" and "sick" after showing images of murder suspect Luigi Mangione alongside the Hannah Montana track, He Could Be The One.The DJ-led event in Boston on Friday was billed as featuring music from the Disney Channel. Images flashed up on a screen of Mangione, who is charged with shooting dead UnitedHealth Group executive Brian Thompson in New York this month.There has been negative reaction on Facebook where organisers, promoting upcoming dates, posted a video online.Footage showed images of Luigi Mangione alongside the message: "Disney Channel Night x Luigi coming to your city this holiday season!" The crowd is heard cheering in reaction to the photographs as the song by Hannah Montana, the Disney character played by actress Miley Cyrus, was played.As the track ended, the DJ drew further cheers and said: "You gotta give the people what they want." People described the video as "disgusting" and "sick" on Facebook.The Bop to the Top event does not appear to be linked to Disney. The media giant and event organisers have both been approached for comment along with the venue, Big Night Live. Mangione, 26, is accused of killing the head of an insurance firm on 4 December and was arrested on 9 December after a manhunt.He had already been charged with murder but now faces 11 counts including a new charge of murder as an act of terrorism. Read more from Sky News:Inflation rises: Discover what is costing moreAvanti West Coast staff to strikeThe incident has turned the spotlight on the health insurance industry, with some online appearing to glorify Mangione's alleged actions.Tickets for the Bop to the Top event, which is touring the US, start at around $20 (£16) and entry is limited to those 18 or over. disgusting-dance-party-shows-luigi-mangione-alongside-hannah-montana-track-us-news

Here's the original page:

I would say all the Spider characters need therapists but Miles currently has one.
[Photo ID: a cropped panel page from Amazing Spider-Man #796, showing Spider-Man (Peter Parker) looking up and to the right looking absolutely dismayed, arms at his side. On the left and right of him are men in grey suits. The one on his left has their right fist raised and is mostly off screen and the one on his right is more visible with most of his bottle and head visible and he's smiling and has his left hand up. Spider-Man is saying "Of course this happens when I can't afford a therapist.
The second image is the full page. Showing Agent Anti-Venom (Flash Thompson) swinging away in an all white suit with a black spider logo on his chest. He says "--But I've got an appointment to keep." Behind him is a bank and one of the windows looks broken. Boomerang is upside down and stuck to the wall only his face and black helmet mask which is kinda like two wide block "M"s on top of each other. On the ground is a bunch of random New Yorkers (top right to bottom right, counterclockwise)
Old white lady (pink shirt, black pants, grey hair in a bun, both arms up and smiling): Is it with me for dinner?
Random white dude (brown Afro, beige jacket, black shirt, blue jeans, giving a thumbs up, also smiling but with no teeth)
Blonde hair white dude in grey suit mentioned above but he's holding a grey duffel bag: Mm-hmm. Agent Anti-Venom... Come 'round here anytime.
Peter Parker as Spider-Man: Of course this happens when I can't afford a therapist.
White guy in grey suit now more visible also with blonde hair but his suit is open to show a white shirt and yellow stripped tie and he has both of his fists up in excitement.
On the right side of the bank is a Black guy with a blue baseball hat, a dark yellow jacket, and is clapping and smiling.
Lastly, there a white guy with a biege aviator hat, a grey beard, a green collared shirt with two breast pockets and two more pockets below them, and brown khakis, excitedly holding his right fist up.
Context: This shows Spider-Man (Peter Parker) showing up late to fight against Boomerang (Fred Meyers) who was webbed up by Agent Anti-Venom (Flash Thompson) who is late for meeting with CEO of Alchemax, Liz Allen. Explaining the overly complicated symbiote lore is beyond me. I know that Flash and Eddie Brock where both trying to get the Venom symbiote back and it tried to bind with both of them and Peter poured this artificial Anti-Venom serum that Alchemax was working on to kill the symbiote and instead of doing that, it created a new artificial Anti-Venom symbiote that had the inverse colors of Flash's Agent Venom costume (which was black with a white Spider logo). Not to be confused with the Anti-Venom created when Martin Li (Mr. Negative) used his Lightforce healing powers to cure Eddie Brock's cancer and accidentally infused the remnants of the Venom symbiote in Eddie's body with his powers, that were there when the symbiote tried to leave Mac Gargan and return to Eddie, fusing the symbiote with his white blood cells and giving him him tremendous superpowers and the ability to heal others and remove impurities from their body or something. Meet Me By The Floppy Watches
read it on AO3 at https://ift.tt/QP5GVcJ by Lunoname The positives absolutely outweighed the negatives, Peter could see that Flash had been coming to terms with something, figuring out what kind of person he really wanted to be. That might be the most positive thing somebody can do. The negative being that Peter's spank bank was dwindling. - Peter savoring each moment that Flash gives him attention. Anticipating a Bitcoin Surge: Q4 Market Optimism on the Rise
Key Points
QCP Capital predicts a positive future for Bitcoin, based on increased interest in the options market.
Expected Federal rate cuts could further boost the cryptocurrency market, according to a crypto executive.
Crypto trading firm QCP Capital has projected a positive future for Bitcoin (BTC) based on data from the options market. The firm stated in its recent update that it remains bullish on BTC due to significant call buying in December and March expiries.
Increased Interest in Options Market
Major funds are reportedly continuing to roll their long call positions for September, indicating a bullish sentiment for BTC. A surge in “long call” positions means that speculators expect the underlying asset, in this case BTC, to rise by the expiration dates.
After a significant drop to $49K on August 5th, BTC market stagnated for a couple of days. However, according to Quinn Thompson, founder of Lekker Capital, BTC surged to $60k on August 8th as there were no sellers as expected by the market.
Upcoming Fed Rate Cuts
Thompson downplayed the recession fears and stated that the upcoming Federal rate cuts could be the next positive market catalyst. He also pointed out that the recession was a Q2 event and the market is now looking forward to its first rate cuts in four years.
Meanwhile, the demand for BTC, especially from US investors, has strengthened this week. This is indicated by the Coinbase Premium Index, which has risen from negative to positive. This strong demand could potentially mean that BTC’s appreciation and recovery could extend.
However, despite the positive outlook, BTC has flashed some bearish signals. These could potentially unnerve some investors and traders, despite the expectation of further recovery.
