so the titanic was built by the company harland and wolff for the white star line. at the time it was the biggest (or one of) ocean liners. it was based off its sister ship the olympic and had a few small differences.

it was divided into multiple compartments to help prevent sinking and had a bunch of safety features that were based off known prior causes for shipwrecks. the compartments could have four of them flooded and still have the ship not sink. they were water tight walls (with also water tight doors) that reached up above the waterline, but werent enclosed. so if the water managed to flood so high it got above the waterline of the ship (like when the bow sunk under the water) it could spill over and into other compartments. of its two lifeboats it had two collapsible ones. because of all its safety features it had it was marketed as "practically unsinkable" which is how it got that reputation for being called unsinkable.

on the day it happened, april 14th of 1912, it was sailing on the atlantic ocean to america at top (or close) speed at night. there was a lookout who was meant to have a pair of binoculars but they were missing so they had to try do without. they spotted a iceberg right ahead and told the bridge who then started turning the ship to try avoid collision. they couldnt turn in time because they saw it too late so it ended up scraping the side of the ship. it made a series of small cuts along the side under the water, which started letting water in. it went across five of the compartments, but on the fifth it just barely got it right after the compartment wall. it opened up a hole in the coal storage area that had one of its walls be the compartment wall, one the hull wall, and the other two were fairly thin metal and a door to access coal that wasnt watertight or designed to hold back water. from here the door burst after the water flooding the coal area was too much to hold back and started slowly flooding that 5th compartment with water through that doorway.

because of all the flooding at the front of the ship (and in more compartments than it could survive having flooded) the titanics bow started to sink under the water, and water was flooding the front. this made the bow sink under the water and started lifting the back of the ship out of the water. when the water reached the first funnel it had too high of a pressure for its thin metal to stand and it fell down and nearly took a lifeboat under the water with it. i think it was one of the collapsible ones with second officer lightoller nearby. eventually when enough of the back was out of the water it was too much weight and pressure for the middle of the ship to hold up and it broke apart into two and both sunk fairly fast after that. at that point it was early morning (like midnight morning) of the 15th of april.

when they were trying to evacuate passengers onto life boats (with women and children) at first passengers didnt really believe them because of the whole reputation for being unsinkable. this caused the first (few? not sure if one or more) lifeboat to launch while underfilled. it took the titanic a few hours to sink which compared to other ships sinking was a bit of time (like most would sink in under an hour, but it does depend on the type of damage and ship, etc). the first class rooms were decorated in different time period and style themes. also fun fact i got to touch part of the titanics hull. it had one of its bolts there too but i dont know if it was the inside paret of the hull with the bolt not smoothed down or from the section without.

the titanic had most of its bolts on the outside smoothed down but there was a section where the hull was reinforced with octagonal (or similar shape if not) metal which didnt have its bolts smoothed down. this section was in the middle where the ship would have to be flexible to move with the water and waves and not be too [word for not moving/still] or it would break. it was reinforced to help keep it stronger from wear over time.

also back to museum where i got to touch its hull. it was interesting. i also got to see a bunch of stuff they brought up from its wreck. there was even a piece of ice to touch at one point when it was talking about differences in salt and fresh water ice and when the iceberg hit the ship. it was cold and slimy.

and the ship had both steam and a turbine engine. the fourth funnel was for the turbine and a few other areas like the fireplace in one of the first class areas. the others were for the boilers of the steam engines. there were also pipes on the outside of the funnels. some were for excess steam like when the ship would stop or slow down/etc. and there were some for water but those didnt reach up to the top.

idk why i thought i dreamed this ask but i forgot you sent it 😭 here ya go!

the beanbean and mushroom kingdoms have an extremely close relationship that’s rather old, and as such the births of both heirs were highly celebrated by both families.

here, peasley is roughly 1 year older than peach, and the betrothal between the two was set up very early so the two do not remember their first meeting as they were infants at the time. but still, they visited peach many times before her debutante.

peach’s parents died in a horrific incident i still haven’t detailed when she was around 3-4, which did result in queen bean reaching out more often as peach grew older to offer additional guidance and support :]

but back to peasley and peach, they were thick as thieves and peasley introduced her to fencing! toadsworth wasn’t a fan at first but eventually relented (whatever endears her to peasley, plus any experience with a weapon could come in handy if the mushroom kingdom were to ever leave the peacful era). she’s quite adept in both forms, but prefers to fence in human form. it isn’t something she practices often in current day but it’s something she treasures the memories of alongside trying his bean pillow and learning about beanbean allies and his travels :]

though, as they got older, the two became more aware of their betrothal and what would follow, but things weren’t clicking so they decided to experiment a little (read: they kissed and neither of them liked it. sad!) but neither have brought up calling anything off as both are quite fine with something contractual if it came down to it (but peach would call it off if peasley asked)

at peach’s debutante, they danced together first as a show of the kingdom relationship, and when the first attack/kidnapping happens, the beanbean kingdom offered aid and refuge (little fungitown)

re: her appearance and peasley—she initially meets the beanbean family in toad form, but as she got older this became rarer as experience (and her self image) became priority. peasley makes sure to praise her toad form’s beauty when he sees it, and when mario does come into the picture is of the firm opinion alongside daisy that he does not deserve her if he doesn’t like her true form. on most days she agrees with him

as for superstar saga, he still arrives to the mushroom kingdom ahead of time and toadette volunteers to take peach’s place instead of birdo (the effect is later undone before peach arrives in the beanbean kingdom)

post superstar saga, the two meet (peach crownless) to discuss their love interests, and their betrothal is officially called off. consequent meetings with the beanbean kingdom are held in her toad form :]

Hey! I'm working on a small private project, and it's made me curious about something.

I've met a lot of different communities through the Rhythm Doctor fanbase. A lot of RD fans are Filipino, Korean, Mexican, etc. - but I've become curious about how much diversity there actually is in terms of race.

I've met very few BIPOC in the RD community, and I'm not wanting to harass and question those I know for a simple curiosity. So, I've come to you! This following poll includes the ethnicities I've most commonly found within the RD fandom, so if you find you're not part of any, just hit "other"! Thank you.

crane wives songs ranked by how much i can make them about the magnus archives because that's the level of obsession i've reached part 2: safe ship, harbored (2/2)

here we go again! this may be the most self indulgent thing i've ever done, i'm having a great time. happy to hear thoughts on my choices, though the numbers are there for the sake of fun numbers, really. lyrics in italics!

safe ship, harbored: starting off with the album namer! and also a suprisingly tricky one for me, for some reason. watch me give up honey, watch me give up / i swore i never would. with the ship metaphor you could maybe s4 martin it? with the lonely and everything. or very early s5 jon, with how defeated he was, and how he says he wouldn't have gone on without martin. or early seasons for both of them, when they were both playing it safe in their own ways? though, neither of them ever fully give up, do they? and i'm struggling to think of a major character that does, who also works with the rest of the themes. it's a beautifully stubborn cast and i love that about them. depends what you count as giving up. someone did wear them down, though, that's for sure. i wasn't born a safe ship / something wore me down, could be done with all of the different marks from the fears, or the lonely with martin, etc. i feel like it can work well even if it took me a minute to get there. 7/10.

naked, the night falls: love the imagery in this song. been enraptured and tied / turn your ghosts into mine. i feel like you could use this for a few relationships in the show? canon or otherwise, but i'm not much of a shipper, so i'll that up to the reader to decide hgjfkd. there are a few motifs with a few different fears, like the dark with the title line and some desolation with, slowly i burn / like the autumn leaves / brittle as ash, but when i rise / oh i will learn / like the elder trees. trees and burning in the same sentence also makes me think of hilltop, if that's helpful in your character choosing. though i feel like the ghosts line especially can work for many. 6/10.

ancient history: to be honest. this song could be about most characters yet again. a song about trying to let go of trauma, and this podcast has so much of it to give them. i lean towards jon for it given the verse with my dreams keep digging up the bones of memories and him being the most heavily linked to dreams that are explicitly traumatic events (other people's, but still. that might work better even) in the main cast, and also. like. we see him go through so many horrors. but i think you could choose a specific character or make it the whole group of them and there's definitely enough material either way. the line now half a skeleton is slapping its knees / laughing at the holes it left behind is slightly harder for me to pinpoint but if that skeleton is meant to be like, the malicious party here? again, take your pick. jane prentiss left literal holes. i hear jonah's got a corpse lying around, and he sure did laugh about the horrors he caused. 8/10.

october: take my word, but keep the upper hand / i know you, you're the daughter of a lonely man / so let my hope grow cold and atrophy / 'cause there is no more room in your heart for me. this verse especially works for s4 jonmartin very well. thematically, it's very lonely. i will point out though that the song is about two women and that is part of the context i feel (though some of that context is preserved with both of them being queer). even though i mostly have fun messing with gender for song choices, this one i will point out in case anyone has ideas with that in mind, because you could even do different characters with different verses perhaps. i'd love to hear thoughts on this one. because that verse especially does work well, and the others have potential too, i'll say 6/10.

the crooked, the cradle: now this one. oooo. i don't even know where to start. like. there's blood in the water, there's blood in the water / the quiet are restless, the silent are still / i'm nobody's daughter, i'm nobody's daughter / my enemies crawl, we're alone with the kill. what else do i need to say to convince that this can work perfectly for so much and for so many characters like hello. the annotation for that line had someone linking it to a hunt. like. this cradle still burns like a hole in my chest. i'm pointing look at it. the crooked are smiling, they know me the best. the lyrics are there. what else can i say about them. if mercy's abound, i'll be safe, i'll be sound / and the devil won't know all the love i just couldn't let go / i won't pretend my season won't end / but i pray, when it's done, when it's through / i'll have something left for you. i am gesturing emphatically at these lyrics. given i am incoherent about explaining it because like. it's there you can see it right. i will give it the first 10/10.

i ain't done: this one is complicated by the fact that it's really specific, given it's drawing on the story of the ada witch (per a source from the genius site that lead me down the rabbithole of crane wives internet archive live shows, thank you by the way), and while it's a ghost story in itself, i can't really map it onto a magnus archives one. if anyone remembers a statement that fits the bill, let me know? or if anyone can figure out a way to twist it that works for a different plot that doesn't share everything in common with all the literal parts of it, but still kind of works. in my mind, this one doesn't magnus, but maybe it does for someone else! it does get some points naturally by being a ghost story though. which makes it a 2/10!
