I think a lot of "feminist retellings" just give the female characters more agency and call it a day. And like, that's kind of ignoring the conversation. *Yes,* women should have agency, but an integral part of feminist criticism is the discussion around women's agency and lack thereof. This can be shown in various ways, ranging from Woman Saves the Day to Woman Has No Choice in Anything and Why That's Very Bad.

Giving a woman a sword isn't inherently feminist. The narrative must understand the importance of this sword, and why she wields it. Making a woman hate embroidery isn't inherently feminist. The narrative must explain why she hates it. Nothing is inherently feminist, but anything can be used as a tool or symbol to discuss women's rights.

That's not to say that every retelling centering a woman has to engage with feminist themes to be good. Gender swaps are fun! If an author wants to write one without talking about feminism, that's okay! But if this text were to be published, it shouldn't be marketed as a "feminist retelling." Woman main character =/= feminism
