DROSS Demo Update 0.8.1: New Features and Improvements

DROSS Demo Update 0.8.1 for the epic FPS roguelike game adds new features for Linux, Mac, and Windows PC. Thanks to the creative team at Team_Derelict for making this all possible. Aiming for a release later this year on Steam. Team Derelict is eager to announce that DROSS is taking over with Demo Update 0.8.1. Bringing a lineup of new features — fresh weapons, new enemy types, and creepy Dross nest infestations. Plus loads of fixes and tweaks to make Linux gameplay smoother. So if you're into FPS roguelike games with a heavy dose of horror, you’ll definitely want to dive back in and see what’s changed. DROSS Demo Update 0.8.1 throws you into a derelict facility crawling with alien bugs—the Dross. As you explore this spooky, procedurally generated world, you’ll collect powerful weapons and gear to help you survive. Each run is different, keeping things fresh (and terrifying) every time you drop in.

The DROSS - 0.8.1 demo Update Features New Weapons

First up in Demo Update 0.8.1, we've brought back the Plasma Rifle and the Automatic Shotgun in DROSS. These bad boys are higher-level, so they’re a bit tougher to snag. You can grab them in the shop (for a price) or track them down in armories as you level up. Time to bring some serious firepower!

Armored Enemies

Now, some enemies are coming at you with face armor. This makes them spawn slower and move a bit slower, but also makes them a tougher target. As you progress and start landing more headshots, you’ll see these armored enemies pop up more frequently.

Nest Infestations

Things are getting creepier with nest infestations across levels. You’ll see more enemies around these areas, which are now visibly infested on your map. In the Demo Update 0.8.1, tThe higher the infestation level, the stronger the red marks on the DROSS map. So, if you see a red zone, be ready for action!

Improved Enemy Director

Our updated Enemy Director now keeps tabs on how you’re doing in-game – shots fired, damage taken, accuracy, all that good stuff. This should help balance the combat, giving you breaks and ramping up the action depending on your performance. It also affects which types of enemies spawn, so every run will feel more dynamic and suited to your skills.

Polished Details

We’ve added tons of small touches. Locked doors now glow red, explosions add some smoke and light, grabbing items out of combat has its own animation, and time slows slightly when selecting grenades or switching weapons. These Demo Update 0.8.1 tweaks should add up to a smoother, more immersive DROSS game on Linux.

First-Person Animation Fixes

We ran into some issues with first-person animations, mainly with arm and hand rotations that caused…well, some wild spinning! It was quicker to rework animations from scratch, so things look a bit different. Now, switching from holding a weapon to guarding is smoother, and you can even guard without a weapon. Some animations aren’t fully polished yet, but they’re getting there.

Corridor Themes

To make each floor feel unique, Demo Update 0.8.1 has different themes for the DROSS corridors. It’s simple for now, but it adds a bit of atmosphere as you go deeper. This will continue to evolve based on feedback, so let Team_Derelic know what you think.

Player Luck & Shops

We’ve introduced a Luck stat that affects item drops and shop discounts. Higher luck means better chances for goodies in boxes and sales in shops. You can boost your Luck in subtle ways as you play, adding a nice layer of strategy to item hunting.

DROSS Demo Update 0.8.1 Bug Fixes and Adjustments

We’ve tackled a long list of bugs and issues based on player feedback. Here are a few highlights:

Fixed problems with some rooms not updating infestation visuals correctly.

Adjusted armored bug AI so they don’t get too close or start walking on walls unexpectedly.

Smoothed out the shotgun reload and grenade animations.

Addressed issues with vending machines not spawning ammo or grenades.

Added map icons for bigger machines to make navigation easier.

DROSS Demo Update 0.8.1 Final Touches

Lastly, there is some polish around locked doors, item pickups, and ambient lighting. Due to make the whole experience feel more immersive. It's taken a lot of work – and more than a few all-nighters – but it's coming together very well. Remember, the DROSS FPS roguelike is still in development, so keep that feedback coming for Demo Update 0.8.1. Hey!! I took part in Acerola Jam 0 and squirted out a new game in 2 weeks!

Hostel West Coast, a barebones lil roguelike FPS set in a hellish hotel.

Was a great learning opportunity for me, particularly in regards to using resources in Godot and in general making things that are more expandable. As light as this may be in content, I feel like I have enough of a basis that I could VERY easily build on this and turn it into something more exciting with time. I even made music for it, how fucked up is that?
