Being constantly reminded in the class I'm TAing for this semester of my 7th grade history teacher who decided to spend the year teaching us about the history of Haiti, South Africa, China, and Chile - by which I mean basically the contents of The Black Jacobins, anti-Apartheid activists (I remember that we watched the biopic of Stephen Biko), the Cultural Revolution, and the coup against Salvador Allende and the repression under Pinochet's government - at a school which was about 70% Black, less than 10% white, and solidly 80-90% immigrant kids. Also she was a lesbian and I know this because she mentioned her wife once or twice. Literally who was doing it like her
#she's the person that republicans are scared of and also she was such a good teacher#i remember so much from that class even though at this point it was well over 10 years ago#literally immunization against 'the us education system doesn't teach you anything' WELL IT COULD#the further i actually get into academia the more i'm amazed at how much of that she managed to bring to 13-year-olds#also this was the school that was 67% haitian so spending half a year talking about haitian history was very cool of her#perce rambles#also real boston moment but her being a lesbian never really even registered as notable#only by being on tumblr have i realized that growing up with 15 million married lesbians around you was not a common experience#the more salient thing i remember is that she had a dog named palomita#anyways shout out to ms [redacted] you were a real one

Maaan I love the optimistic advice "keep practicing and you'll get better at art" as much as the next artist, but it always rubs me the wrong way when that evolves into "just keep practicing and you WILL 100% succeed and CAN get into the industry."
It changes from good general advice to implying you're just doing something wrong if still haven't "made it" yet. Not in the industry? Well, you just haven't worked hard enough, obviously, as if there aren't plenty of other factors that play into "succeeding” in a highly competitive industry like art.
Don’t let advice that’s supposed to be encouraging turn into something discouraging 😭
#there’s a lot more to worming your way into the art industry than just. studying art real hard and working your bones off#hard work only gets you so far.#a lot of ‘success’ also starts at childhood and that goes for any industry#having supportive family and even better if they’re financially supportive#good early education. good physical and mental health. the ability to focus and do the same task over and over for hours#good social skills- because networking gets you a lot further than pure talent alone.#growing up in a convienaint location to even network at all. or the power to travel to such a location.#natural talent puts you ahead. brains work differently so it’s ignorant to pretend natural talent isn’t a thing#some take to a skill faster than others because their brain comes out more wired for it. so their skills develop easier and faster#music never came to me. I can’t hear the tone of my own voice most of the time. I DID study music and take mystic classes as a teen#it’s insulting to be banged over the head with ‘if you study music you’ll start to get it.’ I’m 28#I know myself and have tried during an age which music is easier to learn and yet I did not. I don’t have talent for it- my brain doesn’t-#-grasp it. the same with any art. some will struggle more to learn visual art ‘good enough’ for the industry#and implying that they just don’t get it yet becasue they haven’t tried hard enough is insulting#you can always get better. always always!! but sometimes grinding is just… grinding. fruitless and painful#I failed algebra twice as a teen. I couldn’t understand punnet squares till my 20s.#saying work harder and you’ll become a math professor would be insulting. implying I never tried to learn at all.#implying that even tho I took tutoring multiple times that maybe. if I just took one more. poor id suddenly be more able.#people work hard and it just clicks and 10 years later you’re in a great art industry job… you’re not the rule. you’re the exception#ugggh sorry :p just frustrated. sometimes people just don’t realize the kind of luck they’ve had in life and it irritates me

This is just kvetching into the void but I periodically see posts on this here internet and website essentially trying to police the terms people use for their own art, ie "you can't call something a doodle if it looks finished (to me)" or "stop doing sketchbook flips that are finished pieces, it's supposed to be doodles and wips in a sketchbook!" and usually there's a reason given about these things setting an unrealistic standard either for other artists, or non-artists, and these irritate the piss out of me every time I fear.
Your 'finished piece' might BE someone's low effort doodle, that's just life sometimes! This is fine! It need not reflect on you!
Similarly, the sketchbook is the medium. Whether it's showcase of completed works or practice sketches is irrelevant. They are showing their sketchbook.
Much of this moaning is indirectly shot at people who are full-time artists, if not professionals, posting online. Are you under the impression their grasp of art terminology is just flat out wrong? Or is it just broader than you would like?
I can't take the fear of unrealistic expectations seriously, sorry. People are very ignorant, yes, but the cure is never a dumbing down of the topic, nor trying in vain to universalize it.
This all kind of wraps into how social media turns people sharing their art into this cut throat arms race, how divorced people become from means of actually learning their craft in that sort of environment, and the, to be blunt, sour grapes that grow from all of this. Sincerely, I just encourage people to worry less about other artists minding their business and focus more on personal growth. Maybe let yourself get inspired! And then we'll both win, because I will see less incessant whining out in the wild!
#transmissions from mars#I'm being polite and not reblogging what put this on my mind#but it's been bothering me too long to keep it to myself lmfao#Simply Never Post Things That Make Me Feel Insecure About My Skills#listen (genuinely) (I am clutching your shoulders): you have GOT to get over it#I could yap further about how people do not study art history and do not learn technique and do not participate in class environments#to be explicitly and loudly clear there is not shame illegitimacy or degradation in being self taught!#but this lack of engagement in both history community and critique can frequently lead to this sort of#fragile echo chamber and ignorance#access to full blown education on art is a privilege as much as anything else#but I do wish people would at least have some curiosity and research outside of like. viral art tutorials. yanno?#I'm not talking Art School either that is almost always a waste of fucking time and money#do like me and go to community college... sign up for a local meet-up... there's online groups too#fall down an art history rabbit hole#engage outside of what you already think you KNOW I guess is what I'd like

️🔥 Social Class
i think poor people are evil because money is the one single measure of moral and ethical worth in a person.
#i dunno man i dont have any controversial takes regarding social class#poor people are poor due to a mix of socioeconomic factors they tend to be born into and is really hard to get out of#and easy to slide further down#and rich people tend to be rich because of pretty much the same reasons#and the best way to solve this is through social spending in education welfare and investing in small bussineses and building more housing

The way grown adults in their twenties still talk about how they didn't learn about x historical event or y horrific thing the US did back when they were in highschool as if it's any excuse for their willful ignorance is like actually so pathetic. It's four years of schooling that you had a decade ago of course you didn't learn every single thing in the world, no one does in any school in any country. You're not special. It's time to grow up and make the effort to learn things for yourself, You're Not In Highschool Anymore
#txt#like it's always “I didn't learn xyz in school” and “the US education system sucks” girl you're 25.#Literally stop talking about highschool.#If you're not going to make the effort at least own up to it instead of making excuses and getting defensive#Like all of these people spend so much time complaining about what the US didn't teach them when they were a CHILD#when they could be spending that time. Googling? Reading? Asking their peers questions?#This is the information age. There is literally no excuse#when most of these people are on the computer actively using the internet for hours upon hours every day#or their phone or tablet or whatever else#making post after post on social media. But literally only getting their news from Twitter or Tumblr? Insane.#Do some reading yourself.#Idk check out library books. Your library needs the foot traffic anyway.#Ask questions on Reddit. There's plenty of people who actually are totally interested in answering your questions in good faith.#Ask questions on TUMBLR even. I know there's plenty of people HERE who are willing to answer questions in good faith.#Your peers are a great respurce to utilize for learning about Literally Anything!#Not that everyone knows everything. But it's still awesome to ask your peers questions and discuss things with them!#Like it's actually a great way to learn new things! It's kind of ONE of the big reasons things are taught in whole classes of people!#I can't stress enough! OP makes a post it is ok to ask them a question about it or ask about further reading or ask for a source!#As long as you're asking in good faith because you want to learn! It's not a bad thing to do!#If OP gets really upset and nasty about the question—that's not cool BUT you can't really blame them.#If they are a victim of whatever their post is about it's very frustrating for them and moreso that they feel they have to TEACH people#about it. So give people some grace in that regard. Not everyone will have perfect responses 24/7.#For the most part people will be able to recognise and understand the genuine desire to learn about something and help and will be at LEAST#willing to point you in a direction. Even if it's just a Subreddit or another tumblr acc or something#Like I cannot stress enough. You can do something to change your “lack of education” about subjects by Educating Yourself#and Asking. Questions. And. Talking. To. Your. Peers. About. Things.#There's a hobbyist for everything. There's one autistic guy with a special interest out there that has all the answers to your questions#There is also like. News that isn't state-sponsered. But use critical thinking and look into sources.

tbh the only reason why I'm not skipping every math lesson and actually giving it ago is bc I know Alan Turing would be disappointed
#jinx's hijinks#but fr why couldnt i get the good at math neurodivergency#like i feel so stupid because my primary school fucked me over in every aspect#i missed out on so many key parts of my learning due to so many factors#all my classmates hated me and i spent so much time just out of class#my school didnt give me any accommodations because i hadnt been flagged as neurodivergent#even tho i was very clearly neurodivergent#i had to leave so many lessons because i would cry uncontrollably or hide under desks because i didnt want to be around anyone#i found it so hard to pay attention to anything that didnt interest me and it effected me so badly#i dont know my times tables because i wasnt taught in a way we could understand#everyone around me understood but me and i was left to fall behind because they cared more about extending other kids further#than helping the kids who were struggling#and i know my school was like this because i excelled in other subjects and watched other kids fall behind because they struggled#anyways can education systems care more about oids who fall behind because it so quickly can fuck up the rest of their schooling#and make it so much harder for them

i really want to get serious about decentering men
#i had this subconscious belief for a while that some rich guy was gonna swoop in and save me from working#my parents are lower middle class and in extreme poverty respectively#most men that are rich grew up rich#and most men that grew up rich will pick a girl that grew up rich#a man is not coming to save me#and if a man cant save me then he can only burden me#so there’s really no point in putting any energy or effort into finding a partner if it’s not going to benefit me#i need to take that energy ive been putting into men and use it to further my hobbies and my education#my career and my friendships

my prof just explained on the syllabus that he’s included more points in the class than we needed to pass, so we could skip up like?? 20 small assignments/quizzes/participation!! and still get a very high grade!!
the idea was that we could focus on assignments that played to our strengths - only do the participation stuff if we like to talk out loud - only do the quizzes/readings if we want to do the class remotely - only do online discussions if we like to talk and share opinions but struggle with anxiety in class ect.
and that’s cool enough but then he pulled up DnD character sheets with drawings he’d done of these hypothetical student player classes and how our various accessibility needs could be gamified to ‘max out’ different aspects of the class to get high grades and like!!!!!
hell yeah!!!! let’s treat accessibility in higher education not just as a necessity but as the fun, engaging, and creative aspect of learning that it is!!! I love this!!
EDIT: For proper credit or further questions about his system please find my professor on twitter @/kurtishanlon
#his drawings were so cute too and they had titles like ‘silent warrior’ ‘voice of the people’ ect waaaa im so#excited for this class#he also promised to wear a mask and asked us to do the same my mannnn#double shot

my fear of failure and pursuit of perfection is ruining my artistic endeavors and it fucking sucks bc i just Can't break out of it. probably bc of how ingrained being perfect and successful was in my family honestly.
#like mom got her hopes up with my sister bc she was a cheerleader#on the volleyball team and got a college degree#and got lots of academic accolades in high school and college#and is now making 100k a year as the head nurse on her hospital floor#so she thought i'd be the same way#bc my sister is literally a textbook model of the 'perfect daughter'#and then i happened and was absolutely nothing like her#so when i turned out to be dumb and unsuccessful and mentally ill/disabled#she just. further pushed the narrative of being perfect at everything#bc even if i wasnt educated and successful i can at least make perfect art#and bc she graduated top of her class in her art college in fine arts#and everything she does is hyper realistic and absolutely perfect#so she expects a LOT of me when it comes to art and creative endeavors#idk man i just feel like i was set up to fail and that i currently am

100%! - and the other way around!
I wish so much that teachers in my school or any kind of careers advisor would have bluntly sat us kids/teens down and said something like "what kind of lifestyle do you want as an adult? Here are 5 career paths that would facilitate that."
I was a working-class kid. "Follow your dreams" is great advice for those that have a safety net if those first dreams don't end up working out. For kids like me, "here's how to secure a baseline that will give you multiple chances in the future to follow the dreams you later develop" would have been much more valuable advice.
Even to the extent of hammering home "going to college/university is the one time in your adulthood you will be provided with guaranteed funding to train yourself to gain some lasting skills. It would be wise to pick something you have no other path to picking up." A lot of students misuse that opportunity to study something they could just take an informal class in as an adult. Nobody seems to tell prospective students it will cost you the exact same amount whether your degree involves three years of just attending talks and lectures once or twice a week, or whether it's three years of getting the chance to use and gain expertise on expensive specialist high-tech equipment in laboratories and tech specialist workshops, getting access to field leading specialists to shadow and network with and intern for, and having the opportunity to publish, travel, present at conferences and really establish yourself in a field before even graduating.
The next generation really need to be informed of the true ins and outs of further education before asking them to fix in a certain lane, not least because we all benefit from a maximally-skilled population - we might need people with the optimal knowledge possible in the right fields someday.
When you're a kid/teenager everyone expects you to base your career around your passions and interests and that works for a lot of people but it's not the full story. I wish they would also teach students to consider the lifestyle that career would require.
Like... if I had to choose a passion and work a career around it, I would probably work at a zoo or aquarium. But those jobs require a lot of schooling with STEM classes (which I hate) and a lot of early mornings (which make me feel ill) and an obligation to work in person with no flexibility to move (which makes me depressed). So even if I'd enjoy caring for animals all day, it's not a good career path for me.
My current job is travel writing, which is not my passion. I like it, but it's not my passion. But I work a flexible schedule, I can live anywhere, I get a travel stipend, and my team is really chill. So it works for me.
Rather than solely focusing on "What topics do you like?" I think we should ask students "Of the careers that suit your preferred lifestyle, which are the most interesting?"

Sick of this shit
#i want to kms violently in front of the people who admitted her into those fucking magnet programs and not me#I want them to admit it at least I’m tired of being gaslit by the entire education system#I’m not as smart as her. you decided she was gifted and I’m not#if there are gifted kids then there are non gifted kids#and clearly gifted kids at least to you are superior#acedemically intelligently socially it doesn’t matter you decided they’re superior#and I’m inferior#and you left me to come to that conclusion on my own#but when I confront you then it’s all ‘ohh your smart ohhh don’t compare yourself to others’#like shut the fuck up. YOU created that comparison when you came up with the concept of a gifted program that only some people get in#and further more when you set me back in other classes#you made that comparison first and now you act like it doesn’t matter#so while she gets every opportunity handed to her you stick me in average or below level classes#you could at least be honest and tell me I’m retarded#we both know it’s true.#asking for a rope for Christmas im not spending another year on an earth where she’s happy#vent

Did my bachelor's degree get me a low level reception job just because they required a four year degree? Yes. Can I work in my field with just my bachelor's degree? No. Because I'd have to get at least my master's to have the knowledge base needed to do any job other than a research assistant in my field.
But here's what I can acknowledge: yes it sucks that my degree can get me a minor administrative position but did not educate me enough to do what I wanted to do.
If you're getting a degree because all jobs require a four year degree, yeah that sucks and causes disillusionment with doing the work to get the degree. But if you're getting a degree to do a job you are only qualified to do with your specific degree and you use chatgpt to get it? You're screwed and so is everyone else relying on you. If you throw away tens of thousands of dollars to not learn how to do your job you're just entitled.
And if you'd like to say I'm being ableist about this, to put it lightly I nearly died while I was getting my degree. My disabilities progressed, because of school, to the point that I couldn't work at all within 2 years of graduating. I will acknowledge that being disabled does not mean you are immune to ableism, but on this front I think my experiences are directly correlated to this matter.
Why are you using chatgpt to get through college. Why are you spending so much time and money on something just to be functionally illiterate and have zero new skills at the end of it all. Literally shooting yourself in the foot. If you want to waste thirty grand you can always just buy a sportscar.
#although i hate the debt and what it did to my life#i do appreciate the education i received#because so many of the skills i developed were just critical thinking#and examining deceptive language and sneaky claims#i was going to go into research#so one of my classes had homework every week to read two research papers#and identify strengths weaknesses and what further research needed to be done to support the present research#that has helped me in unexpected ways like how to evaluate advertisement claims#which honestly like 9.9 times out of 10 are intentionally deceptive or misleading#primarly by omitting information that would reduce the impact of their statements#like “9 out of 10 dentists recommend crest whitening strips!”#yeah because of things like only polling 20 dentists that you provided free whitening strips to#and they dont say the dentists *prefer* crest strips over another#just that they *recommend* them#which is different by the way#honey rambles#chatgpt
