isn’t it kinda ironic that in star wars, there’s a nod to poe being a spice runner, and in dune that leto wanted to be a pilot? kinda funny too, considering that a lot of star wars is inspired, if not copied straight from dune. i love both of the franchises though, and i love oscar isaac.

Now I see people saying that Paul Atreides is the character Daenerys should have been, or that Daenerys is just a straight-up future Alia Atreides. No ! Daenerys is just a hero ! That's all ! She's not meant to freak out ! I'm fed up with this bullshit that makes Daenerys a future villain, or a tragic heroine (like Paul is a tragic hero) destined to fall ! Learn to read damn it !

I was wondering how Denis would deal with the naked workout scene Alia has in the DUNE MESSIAH book and realised George Lucas has already crossed that bridge. He dialled down Frank Herbert's naked Alia to bikini clad Leia. And what a bikini! Designer Jacqueline West has one hell of a task making something just as iconic for Princess Alia. (But please comment if u think Denis should go for naked but shoot it in a PG 13 way, like Irene Adler in BBC SHERLOCK 🤔)

every so often someone is like george lucas made star wars great by copying the heros journey, no, george lucas made star wars great by copying dune

In George Lucas' 1974 rough draft of Star Wars, Princess Leia is a spoiled, snobbish teenage redhead whose character arc involves coming to terms with the harsh realities of life...

...so she's basically Sansa Stark, in other words.

Even funnier: the 1974 draft has a couple of scenes where Lucas was very obviously influenced by DUNE, even down to the wording of the dialogue.

And in Game of Thrones, Sansa's brother and mother, Robb Stark and Lady Catelyn, who lead the initial rebellion against the Lannisters in King's Landing, are quite similar in their dynamics to Paul Atreides and his mother Lady Jessica...

(...though the fate of the Atreides rebellion against the Padishah Emperor is rather different than that of poor Robb and Catelyn.)

I grow more and more convinced that many do not want writers to create stories, they want writers to create encyclopaedias detail all the ins and outs of their fictional universes. They want something canonical they can use to plug up what they perceive to be logic holes, but are simply things that do not matter to the narrative. The Starks and Atreides have no extended family members because they are not needed for the story. Save that stuff for appendixes or companion books if the writer is interested (GRRM certainly is).
