one 100 word email written with ai costs roughly one bottle of water to produce. the discussion of whether or not using ai for work is lazy becomes a non issue when you understand there is no ethical way to use it regardless of your intentions or your personal capabilities for the task at hand
with all due respect, this isnt true. *training* generative ai takes a ton of power, but actually using it takes about as much energy as a google search (with image generation being slightly more expensive). we can talk about resource costs when averaged over the amount of work that any model does, but its unhelpful to put a smokescreen over that fact. when you approach it like an issue of scale (i.e. "training ai is bad for the environment, we should think better about where we deploy it/boycott it/otherwise organize abt this) it has power as a movement. but otherwise it becomes a personal choice, moralizing "you personally are harming the environment by using chatgpt" which is not really effective messaging. and that in turn drives the sort of "you are stupid/evil for using ai" rhetoric that i hate. my point is not whether or not using ai is immoral (i mean, i dont think it is, but beyond that). its that the most common arguments against it from ostensible progressives end up just being reactionary
i like this quote a little more- its perfectly fine to have reservations about the current state of gen ai, but its not just going to go away.
#i also generally agree with the genie in the bottle metaphor. like ai is here#ai HAS been here but now it is a llm gen ai and more accessible to the average user#we should respond to that rather than trying to. what. stop development of generative ai? forever?#im also not sure that the ai industry is particularly worse for the environment than other resource intense industries#like the paper industry makes up about 2% of the industrial sectors power consumption#which is about 40% of global totals (making it about 1% of world total energy consumption)#current ai energy consumption estimates itll be at .5% of total energy consumption by 2027#every data center in the world meaning also everything that the internet runs on accounts for about 2% of total energy consumption#again you can say ai is a unnecessary use of resources but you cannot say it is uniquely more destructive

Heads Up on AI for Google Users.
Hello Everyone, I recently got an email in my account that Gemini(Google's Gen AI) will be active whether or not you want to for tablets and phones. Make sure to have your Gemini in your Account Turned off in your profile and Phones - They give steps into how.
Seriously, can not help, but think that this is related to the "Big Beautiful Bill "and it's unregulated AI usage for 10 years...I am so done with AI 🙄!
I do not wish to see any of my fellow writers and artist have their work stolen unexpectedly, in addition - it is also feels like spying.
Please Reblog this Post to get the message out there, especially for Android Users.
Update: Since I am learning more: If the Situation was not bad enough as it is. Utilities can sometimes include note-taking apps!

Thoughts on Generative A.I.
Not only does Generative A.I. plagiarize human work, and not only does it consume energy at unsustainable levels (lowering the quality of human lives, even if all that energy came from non-fossil fuels), but the way it's advertised to the general public (via Grammarly™, Windows Co-Pilot™, and others) spreads the idea that learning new skills is too difficult to even try, and completely joyless, to boot.
It's that last element that tips it from being bad to truly evil. A.I. bots won't ever reach a Singularity, and enslave Mankind, like in the sci-fi dystopias.
But the mega-corporations are trying to convince us that human imagination is without any value. And if we surrender our imaginations, we will surrender our freedom—not to emotionless androids, but ordinary, mundane, tyrants.
What A.I. is good for: Finding tumors in medical screenings too small for human eyes to detect, and finding planets around individual stars in distant galaxies. In other words: counting and sorting super-massive numbers in short lengths of time (what computers have always been best at).
What A.I. is bad for: Predicting who will commit a crime before any crime has been committed, and setting bail, being a friend to the lonely, making music, writing a letter (even a form letter for business), and anything else where an actual human means to connect to another human.

(Article is from The Verge)
I don't know why this is something we still have to explain: if your industry cannot exist without being destructive, then your industry shouldn't exist.
The entitlement from corpos, to say without shame "But we won't be making tons of money if we aren't allowed to exploit people!" like it's a normal, socially acceptable thing to say, is unbelievable.

Dear, Vector Prime.
Are there other Transformers that transform into deer besides Scrapper? I would like to know the female ones if possible.
Dear Antler Appreciator,
The Scrapper you mention is far from the only one. Some non-Hybridizer incarnations of Thunderhoof turn into deer. The Autobot Herne, when outside of his Pretender shell, transformed into an electro-elk—as did Sero, a Maximal Resistance member who underwent the Beast Upgrade. Now that you mention it, it’s curious that of all the individuals who come to mind, from across the multiverse, not one of them is female. I wonder if there is some underlying metaphysical principle that precludes the adoption of the doe as an alternate form…
This reminds me of a story, which—if my chronometer is to be trusted—should be seasonally-appropriate. Gather around the energon furnace, and I will tell you of the time Sky-Byte learned the meaning of Christmas.
Between schemes, Sky-Byte’s personal mission to understand human literature was well underway. Having already enjoyed A Tale of Two Cities, he next set his sights on that seminal classic, A Christmas Carol. So moved by it was he, that Sky-Byte was inspired to spread the “Christmas Spirit” to his fellow Predacons—and thus he enlisted the help of Slapper, Gas Skunk and Dark Scream, to play the role of the three spirits in his own re-enactment… and as for the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge, why, that part would be played by none other than Megatron, of course.
The production went about as well as you might expect. Nevertheless, having been alerted to the magical properties of the “Christmas Spirit”, Megatron couldn’t help but covet this power for himself. He turned once more to Doctor Onishi’s memories, and in doing so, learned of the existence of the being known as “Santa Claus”.
Megatron reasoned that Santa Claus was the being who commanded the Christmas Spirit, and plotted to hijack the holiday. That night, he travelled to the North Pole to lie in wait… and when the sleigh appeared, he used his flying hand mode to snatch Santa Claus and all the presents! Having stolen Santa's list, he checked it twice, identifying the nicest humans with the most Christmas Spirit to take. On the back of the sleigh, he mounted the Predacons’ psycho-probe, which had been modified to absorb this psychic energy, stealing the hopes and dreams of children asleep in their beds. Dragging it behind him, Megatron changed into his reindeer mode… and took flight.
On Christmas morning, the Autobots were surprised to find a miserable Koji Onishi, who didn't even want to get out of bed to open the Autobots’ gifts. Their attempts to cheer him up only irritated him further. X-Brawn wondered if Koji was upset to be spending Christmas without his father, but Side Burn couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong…
Meanwhile, at the Megastar, Sky-Byte had been left to guard Santa Claus—as Predacon intelligence suggested the old man had a preternatural ability to break in and out of buildings unnoticed. But when Santa Claus revealed to Sky-Byte that his name was near the very top of the naughty list, the Predacon shark had a crisis of conscience. He sent out a transmission, which was received by T-AI at Autobot HQ, to warn them of Megatron's scheme.
Unfortunately, the number of humans affected by the psycho-probe was rapidly snowballing, causing a wave of humbuggery that would give even old Scrooge himself pause. Combined with Santa's magical sleigh, Megatron was moving faster than the Autobots could possibly keep up with! Only Rail Racer stood a chance of catching him, but Team Bullet Train was off-duty, as trains don’t run on Christmas Day. Thinking quickly, the Build Team modified the Global Space Bridge to lock onto Megatron and trap him in the transwarp field, allowing Prime and the Autobot Brothers to intercept. Cornered, Megatron needed more power if he was going to stand a chance—and unfortunately for the Autobots, the Christmas Spirit had unlimited power to give. Absorbing the stolen energy into himself, he supercharged his body into a menacingly festive new form, decked out all in red and gold. The victory he had chased for so long was finally within reach. The Autobots always got what they wanted. Why shouldn’t he?
Koji shouted to Megatron that he would never understand the meaning of Christmas. After all, it’s not about getting what you want—it’s about giving to others. But Megatron only let out a wickedly jolly laugh, for he did indeed have something for the Autobots… and with that, he began to charge his devastating Cutter Beam. Koji begged for him to listen. All the young boy wanted was to spend Christmas with friends and family—to see his father again, to have just one day without fighting. Why should such a dream be impossible? If only he promised to stop fighting, even Megatron would be welcome at their table.
And though Megatron laughed, some part of this warm sentiment touched his icy spark. It triggered a chain reaction in the Christmas Spirit coursing through his circuitry, which fought with his natural evil impulses… before finally exploding. Free once more, the Christmas Spirit returned to all the good little girls and boys. Bitterly, Megatron asked Koji if he had truly meant it. But before the boy could respond, Megatron saw a rift in the transwarp, and took his chance to retreat. Optimus Prime thanked Koji, and renewed his promise to rescue Doctor Onishi—though he regretted that they had not stopped Megatron sooner, and that all the children would be waking up without presents…
When Megatron arrived back at the Megastar, he was furious to discover that Santa Claus had vanished—and Sky-Byte, too! Meanwhile, all over the world, children found gifts had mysteriously arrived under their trees. A little girl looked out of her window, and caught a glimpse of a bearded man in a big red sleigh… pulled by a flying shark.
Merry Christmas, everyone.

Spectagoria Magazine’s 1978 “Swimsuit Issue” mocked the popular institution with themes of pollution and global warming, depicting melting, skeletal, oil-drenched models on apocalyptic beaches. “Just a decade after the carefree innocence of the ‘Endless Summer,’ we are careening towards an uninhabitable future of poisonous air and a deadly summer that truly does not end.” Editor Sera Clairmont said she was inspired by her experience in the record-shattering British Isles heatwave of 1976, which “felt as though the whole of my skin was surrounded at all times by the bone-dry specters of imminent death, crowding ever-closer around me, nipping at my flesh.” The playful, sexy tone of “the swimsuit industry’s most lucrative marketing stunt” felt absurd to her after that experience, as she witnessed what she described as “psychic visions of a future where our relentless destruction of the planet boils it with rage, and dooms mankind to melt and crumble into the dust of our own ruin.”
It was far from the only time Spectagoria’s fashion photography drew influence from supposed visions or “visitations” from the future. But the British Isles heatwave was widely regarded as a standalone extreme weather event, and Clairmont’s prophecy of an imminently burning planet was mocked as the latest example of her supposed “mania” since going into hiding two years prior and shifting the magazine’s focus towards darker and more other-worldly themes. But while critics found its predictions easy to dismiss, still no one had any explanation for where the magazine was staging such elaborate photo shoots, who the models were, or how some of the seemingly impossible visuals were executed. Rumors intensified that Clairmont had powers to commune with realms beyond our own…
Two years later, the 1980 heatwave in the United States was among the most destructive and deadly natural disasters in US history, claiming at least 1700 lives. It was reported as an isolated extreme weather event. As was the next one. And the next one. And the next one…

i'm reading this book (the poem itself) which is a poetry collection of famous poems in french, german, spanish, portuguese, and italian, rendered into english in a "literal translation", with about a page and a half of scholarly commentary each. the general impetus for this collection was that you can never really get a feel for a poem in translation, you have to be exposed to it in the sounds and rhythms of the language in which it was written, so there's a pronunciation guide at the back so you can attempt to read the poems aloud to yourself even if you don't speak the languages. the first hundred pages or so were french poems, which i did not need to consult the pronunciation guide in order to read, but i've since moved on to the german section and i don't know anything about german pronunciation except that w is pronounced [v]. so i'm having to refer to the pronunciation guide for every single letter which is not in fact giving me any sort of sense of the feel of the original poem. i'm not sure if i should give up and just look at the words silently...it seems like if i keep going i'd eventually start to retain some of the pronunciation information and not need to look it up as often? but man it is a total slog. and even when referring to the guide i know i'm not actually pronouncing any of this like german, it is all a complete approximation. and i can't even attempt the prosody because (despite the fact that there is also a prosody guide) how the hell am i supposed to magically know where the stress goes on all these words? i get that there are rules and patterns but there are also things like "except stress this other syllable if it's a verb with a prefix" ok you're assuming i know enough about german to know which letter arrangements (that look just like all the other letter arrangements to me) are prefixes??? or verbs?? the barrier to entry here seems a bit high. i think i will be able to fake it to some extent with spanish and italian, maybe with portuguese, but german? hmm.
#when i first started reading this i was like man it's a good thing this isn't a book of originally english poems translated into french etc.#because i cannot even imagine how you would attempt to pronounce english based on a pronunciation guide#if you don't already speak english#it makes sense to me for french because french actually has a fairly consistent relationship between spelling and pronunciation#and does not have lexical stress at all#but english? i have no idea how i would summarize the rules of english pronunciation for say a french speaker in half a page#better to just write out a phonetic transcription of every line of the poem#poetry#phonetics#prosody#german#my posts#the other thing about it is okay so let's say i memorize how to pronounce all these letters/letter combinations#how much more information does that actually give me than just looking at the letters themselves?#i feel like maybe what i need is just information like 'these are the letters that represent sibilants. these are the letters that represen#guttural sounds' etc. because then i would know enough to be like oh this line has a lot of [similar kind of sound]#and 'these are the ways to spell the same vowel sound' so that i could tell if two words rhyme or not#maybe i should just try to figure out only that level of information and stop trying to pronounce it#because it's one thing to know that 'ei' and 'ai' make the same sound and another to attempt to remember what that sound is#and recreate it with my mouth. that takes time. i can't get anything more global from the poem that way

"I don't use chatGPT, because it uses way more energy and water than a Google search"
Ok, but every time you search Google, it also runs a generative AI query.
So it's all of the resources of a chatGPT call + all the resources of a Google search. So chatGPT is actually more eco-friendly.
"But I have an AI blocker blocker"
I think that just stops it from rendering. If I'm not mistaken, the math is still happening in the background.
