GNARWHAL Premiere Tempestuous Single “Tides”
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
The Electric Highway Festival is just around the corner in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Among the bands featured at this signature stoner-doom fest is GNARWHAL, a fiery four-piece from the beautiful city of Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories.
Today, Doomed & Stoned gives you a first listen to "Tides," a brutal, stormy track that meshes fuzzy, downtuned vibes with unrelenting proggy rhythms. Forlorn vocals that seem to prophesy the inevitable collapse of civilization, as illustrated by the single art.
The band remarks:
"Tides" is a song we originally wrote in early 2023. It’s a bit of a departure from some of our other standard rock songs, but definitely hits a little heavier too. Lyrically, singer Benji Straker was just spitting out doomy ideas on paper which ended up synthesizing into a concept that fit really well with the other tracks on the EP. It sort of tells a tale of despair and dread about decisions made and your place in the world. There’s a bit of an apocalyptic feel to it.
Gnarwhal's Altered States comes out on May 24th (pre-order here). Add it to the soundtrack for the End of Days, and stick it on a playlist with Mastodon, High on Fire, Torche, and Die Like Gentlemen.
Make plans to see Gnarwhal along Anciients, Dead Quiet, Empress, and 20+ other bands at The Electric Highway, April 4th, 5th, and 6th (details & tix here).
Give ear...

SOME BUZZ
Gnarwhal's innovative sound seamlessly blends elements of classic and contemporary fuzz and heavy rock into “Altered States”, which promises to deliver a dark and immersive musical journey that resonates with listeners on a profound level.

In addition to their eagerly anticipated EP release, Gnarwhal’s appearance at The Electric Highway Festival on Saturday, April 6th supporting headliners further solidifies their status as a burgeoning force within the Canadian rock landscape. The band's electrifying live performances, coupled with their distinctive blend of genres, continue to captivate audiences and leave an indelible mark on the heavy music scene. Look out for the conch! Gnarwhal is recommended for fans of Mastodon, The Sword, and King Buffalo.

It would be dishonest of me to say I was one of the first people to live in the house on East Broadway Boulevard once known as, “The Gnarwhal House”. I didn’t name it that, and to be honest, I don’t know exactly how it got that name. But for all the more reason, it made it that much more spectacular. It was a house allegedly built in 1929, near downtown and the University of Arizona campus in Tucson, AZ. The biggest aspect of the house was the backyard, complete with a huge fire pit that people used to dispose garbage into. Often people would park their vehicles back there, given that the house was facing a major main street and had little room on the front driveway, or lack there of, but a large front porch. Besides the essential kitchen, there was a large common space that was used for bands to perform or practice in, a living room, a decent sized bathroom, laundry room, and three bedrooms. Technically, it was either two and a half bedrooms, or two bedrooms and a den, but the den had two doors that could open into either the laundry room or the bedroom in the center end of the house. I was perhaps the second or third generation of people to live there for what it was known for - an anti-jock DIY punk run house. Before I get into my share of my life in the Gnarwhal House, provided will be some backstory. It was perhaps my junior year of high school. I ran with friends that had no particular name, but we later became known as “The Gnarwhals”. If memory serves correctly, this was mostly a result of selecting the most obscure animal in our school textbook, wearing canvas Vans, and gray hoodies of the band, ‘Down To Nothing’ of their album art, “Splitting Headache”. A straight-edge, young man that was about five years our senior, known as “Tucson Tim” had headed the household along with two others about his age. Personally, I never attended any shows at the Gnarwhal House before 2006. The only thing I knew about Tim was that he was a pretty well respected man in the scene, known for stealing books and knowing his hardcore. He’s what some may call, “militant”. I heard he was moving up in the northern states, and his fellow roommates were moving out too. In place of Tim, there was Josh. Josh moved in early 2006 and signed a year lease. Shortly after, two additional people moved in, one of them being not on the lease. As they took on the mantel of having touring bands play often, the house became a shit wreck. Of course as a party house, no one, not even the residents, cleaned up after their guests or themselves. Not to mention, it was full of testosterone of southern youth. One of the said residents of the household at the time had a young dog and would shit often, and everywhere. Sure enough, holes began appearing in the floor, garbage piled up outside, and there was most certainly never any pleasant odors as people left cigarettes and empty tallboy cans and bottles everywhere. The house mostly lacked furniture, which was to be expected more or less if the space was mostly provided for bands to play and crash on the floor if they were touring and needed a place to stay.

The Electric Highway Festival 2025 Returns to Calgary
Doomed & Stoned is proud to rally for the upcoming spring festival in Calgary, Canada: The Electric Highway 2025. The line-up for this April 4/5 event is nothing short of exhilarating.
Kicking things off with the grim rhythmic doom metal band CASTLE on Friday night, who are on the tail end of the Evil Remains Tour, which has taken them to Europe, Canada, and the US.

Robust Canadian sludge attack BISON, long a staple of the scene -- with albums stretching back to 2008 -- headlines the whole festival on Saturday, April 5th.

They will be joined by SoCal rock 'n' roll, out of control band FEVER DOG dishing out ample feel good groove and hard jamming vibes to the stage.
A splattering of Western Canadian bands (of which there are a damn good many) join the roster including LA CHINGA, BUFFALO BUD BUSTER, THE GETMINES, 88 MILE TRIP, CHÛNK, HYDRACAT, THE ASTRAL PROPHETS, BLACKSMITH & BREWER, LOVER, BUNS, and G.E.O.F.F.
There's nothing quite like the live experience. Witnessing the magic of music brought to life on stage. Feeling the impact of that massive low end rumble. There's something visceral about the whole stoner-doom sound in a concert setting that should drive you out of the house for a good show.
The Electric Highway Festival takes place on April 4 & 5 at Dickens (1000 9 Ave SW) in Calgary, Alberta. Here's the full line-up:
Friday, April 4, 2025
Castle (San Francisco/Vancouver)
Buffalo Bud Buster (Calgary)
Blacksmith and Brewer (Vancouver)
CHÛNK (Vancouver)

Saturday, April 5, 2025
Bison (Vancouver)
La Chinga (Vancouver)
Fever Dog (Southern California)
The Getmines (Vancouver)
