Just got back from Godzilla -1.0/C

A.k.a. Godzilla Minus One Minus Color.

The minute the 1940s-1950s era Toho logo popped up on screen, I knew this was going to be special. I saw this in color when it first came out last December and loved it but I think the Minus Color version may even be better. I noticed more little details and it just felt so right to the period it was set in. I cried at the ending again and at THAT scene in the middle and it still hit me so hard. This is such a powerful, well-made film and I don't think I will be over singing it's praises for a very long time, much like I did with Shin Godzilla back in 2016. It's that kind of a movie. I also saw it in 4DX, which was a new experience for me and the motion of the seats plus the added effects made it into something akin to a thrill ride (and a moist one with the mists of water shot at us in certain scenes). My only real complaint was that the 4DX seat was a little tight for someone of my callipygian body type. Still, it was an experience I am glad I paid a little extra for. Though at one point I was wondering how they got something to hit me in the back of the calves and then I realized it was the lace hem of my dress smacking me as the seat rocked violently during one of the action scenes. This is leaving theaters soon after an amazing run and I urge any of you even moderately interested in it to see it on the big screen. Just, if you have sensory issues of any kind, do not see it in 4DX.

Today I felt myself slipping. At once too much coffee and not enough coffee. Water didn't help, food didn't help, a stretching and twisting in my head like there wasn't enough oxygen. I was hypersensitive to other people's emotions and expressions, terrified that I might inconvenience them with my words or my tone or my presence. But I already had a movie ticket in my phone and I let that give me the will to keep moving.

There were four other people in my theater for Godzilla -1.0/C.

By the time the end credits rolled I felt validated. Calmer than I have in a long while. This is a story about being terrified, but also a story validating that terror and celebrating the value of every life. It's a story about war, inside and out.

I drove home when the roads were empty and all the lights were green. It took me fifteen minutes to get to the theater, and five minutes to fly home in the quiet dark.

There was a card in my mailbox, handwritten from a friend.

I'm still thinking about war. About how each of us is fighting in our own way until our individual war is over. And about how people-- and monsters --will always surprise you.

Yesterday at the screening of Godzilla -1.0/C, there were a couple of gentlemen sitting next to me who were talking about the movie, they had seen it in color and wanted to see it again. Not one to pass up a chance to talk about Godzilla, I started talking with them. About two minutes into our conversation they grinned and said, "Wow, looks like we have a Godzilla superfan here." Oh guys, you have NO idea.
