��i hope they’re not standing out there getting rained on,” michael says earnestly from the bed.

“i didn’t see much of a crowd,” you hum, but you widen the curtain a little to make sure.

it seemed like the entire stadium had camped out outside your hotel waiting to catch him. they’d been there for hours, since 5 a.m. at least. michael had given them a few waves and kisses and thrown a pillow in the early morning before the storm came down fast and cold. the crowd stood still for a while even after that, chanting and clapping for him, but retired once the curtain was drawn and the roads got dangerous.

inside it’d always been far more quiet. the room was dark and grey from the gloom. occasionally, a ray of white from the sky peeked in and hit the foot of the bed like a sharp blade, but that lick didn’t come often.

“it’s really the one time i can even go out,” he laughs, “i can’t get any sun when it’s raining.”

“yeah. you’re right,” you giggle, collapsing into his arms.

the sound of fast tires sloshing against the asphalt stories below makes you feel like you’re down on the street instead of so high up in this new place. but his body makes it real. laying there on his chest, you tug at the neckline of his tank top. a few speckles, like flecks of dark coffee remain on his skin, a constellation you love.

“maybe we can still do something later. when it isn’t so heavy.”

you press a kiss to his heart. it beats slowly. his chest rises and falls.

“you know what we could do? to make the rain go away?” michael smiles, lifts his head up.

“what?”

“we can sing the song.”

rain, rain, go away

his eyes closed as he sang, hoping to open them and find his spell would lift the downpour.

you turn your body to the window, the rain still batters down.

“not yet,” you say with the slow nod of disappointment. “so,” you add with a cheerful smile, “we’ll just have to keep singing it.”
