"Tim Friede’s YouTube channel is home to a collection of videos depicting the Wisconsin-native truck mechanic subjecting himself to purposeful snake bites, blood slowly dripping down his arms.
For the past 20 years, Friede has been one of the most notorious ā€œunconventionalā€ medical researchers, undergoing over 200 bites from the world’s deadliest snakes — and more than four times as many — 850 — venomous injections.Ā
He did it all in the name of science.
According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 100,000 people are killed by snake bites each year, with countless more being disabled by the venom of the deadly reptiles.Ā
While life-saving anti-venom is available, very few countries actually have the capacity to produce it properly, given that most bites occur in remote and rural areas, and anti-venom requires arduous sourcing and accuracy.Ā
But Friede’s blood is now full of antibodies, following decades of strategic exposure to the neurotoxins of mambas, cobras, and other lethal slithering critters.
His blood is now the source material researchers are using to develop an anti-venom capable of neutralizing a broad spectrum of snake bites...
Friede started this hobby — which he is indeed adamant no one else tries at home — out of sheer curiosity in childhood. After playing with harmless garter snakes in his youth, he began keeping more dangerous species of snakes as pets. At one point, he had 60 of them in his home basement.
In 1999, he began extracting venom from his snakes, drying it, diluting it, and injecting himself with tiny doses — keeping meticulous records as he went.
He had one major hospitalization in 2001, when he was paralyzed and in a coma for four days. But instead of giving up, he doubled down.Ā
ā€œIn hindsight, I’m glad it happened,ā€ Friede told The Times. ā€œI never made another mistake.ā€
Jacob Glanville, an immunologist and founder of biotech company Centivax, stumbled on Friede’s videos.
Now, Friede is the director of herpetology at Centivax and serves as something of a ā€œhuman labā€ to Glanville.
ā€œFor a period of nearly 18 years, [Tim] had undertaken hundreds of bites and self-immunizations with escalating doses from 16 species of very lethal snakes that would normally a kill a horse,ā€ Glanville told The Guardian.
ā€œIt blew my mind. I contacted him because I thought if anyone in the world has these properly neutralizing antibodies, it’s him.ā€
To develop the new anti-venom, Glanville and his fellow researchers identified 19 of the world’s deadliest snakes — in the elapid family — which kill their prey by injecting neurotoxins into their bloodstream, paralyzing muscles (including the big, important ones, like the heart and lungs).
The trouble is, each species in the elapid family has a slightly different toxin, meaning they would each require their own anti-venom.
But Friede’s blood contains certain fragments of each of these toxins; protein molecules seen across the various species. Because of his decades of service to science, his blood also contains the antibodies required to neutralize these toxins, preventing them from sticking to human cells and causing harm.
Combining the antibodies LNX-D09, SNX-B03, and a small molecule called varespladib that inhibits venom toxins, Centivax has successfully created a treatment effective against the entire range of 19 species’ toxins.
Their work, which was recently published in the journal Cell, will soon be tested outside of the lab.Ā
Trials will start with using the serum to treat dogs admitted to Australian veterinary clinics for snake bites. Assuming that goes well, the next step will be to administer human tests.
Researchers also believe that because the serum stems from a human, this should also lower the risk of allergic reactions when being administered to other people.Ā
ā€œThe final product would be a single, pan-anti-venom cocktail,ā€ Professor Peter Kwong of Columbia University, a senior author of the study, told The Times.
Or, he added, they could make two: ā€œOne that is for the elapids, and another that is for the viperids, because some areas of the world only have one or the other.ā€
As for Friede, he maintains his affinity for snakes, though his last bite was in November 2018, when he said ā€œenough is enough,ā€ according to The New York Times.
By then, he had certainly done enough. His pursuit of immunity could feasibly save countless lives.
ā€œI’m really proud that I can do something in life for humanity,ā€ Friede told The New York Times, ā€œto make a difference for people that are 8,000 miles away, that I’m never going to meet, never going to talk to, never going to see, probably.ā€

Jason (crossing his arms with attitude): What are you going to do? I refuse to apologize.
Bruce stared at Jason in shock, and in his anger, he made a decision that every parent dreads.
Bruce (stern tone): You are grounded!
Jason (this is a whole adult, defiant): You can't ground me!
Bruce (firmly): Grounded!
Jason (shouting, confused): But I don't even live here!
Bruce turned Jason around and pointed to the stairs leading to his old room. Jason was too stunned to respond.
Bruce (stern, but calm): Tonight. Your room. Grounded!
Jason (stammering): I- I- Wait- This isn't fair!
Bruce (scolding parent voice): I'm very disappointed in you. Now go to your room. I'm only doing this because I care for you. Grounded.
Jason (face turning red with anger and sadness): This is some bullshit!
Jason stomped upstairs and slammed the door to his old room. The sound of random items being tossed around echoed through the house.
Bruce (indifferent): He'll work it out of his system. I'm going to bed.
Dick (looking at Tim, then Bruce as he heads upstairs): Did you just ground a 23-year-old?
Tim (surprised): And did it work?
Bruce: You forget I'm Batman.

Just got back from seeing the live action HTTYD movie!! Now let me say that I had pretty high expectations for this movie as the original still remains my Favorite Film of All Time Ever and I was actually SHOCKED at how good it was. Disney take notes bc THAT is how you do a live action movie. It was so faithful to the original down to the actual shots, music and camera direction, I was actually in awe at how they essentially just copied the original film practically line for line. Ofc there were a couple changes here and there, some added dialogue and character interactions, but overall it was super close to the original. I had legitimate goosebumps during the test flight scene AGH they captured everything so well and as a diehard HTTYD fan since 2010 I’m so so happy with how well they captured the essence of the original 😭
Anyway if you’ve been debating over going to see it after being disappointed time and time again by Disney’s shitty live action remakes PLEASE give this one a shot. Dreamworks did it right and they should be praised for a fantastic job well done šŸ‘

ā€œAs far as the police report goes, the ā€œmatter has been closed,ā€ a spokesperson says. Gaiman’s career, meanwhile, has been marginally affected. A few pending adaptations of his novels and comics have been put on hold or cancelled. But the second season of The Sandman is set to premiere on Netflix this year, as is Anansi Boys on Amazon Prime.ā€
– Lila Shapiro, There Is No Safe Word: How the best-selling fantasy author Neil Gaiman hid the darkest parts of himself for decades
[and Good Omens starts filming later this month]
THAT’s why we should be boycotting him. That’s why we should be pressuring every studio and every actor to stop working with him. We can’t do anything about the judicial part, but his career should not have just been ā€œmarginally affectedā€; it should have crumbled to pieces.

Robin!Damian: Put your pew pew away! Wait—
Red Hood (confused chuckle): Put my what away?
Robin!Damian (embarrassed): I meant gun! I’ve been watching a lot of true crime videos, and that site sucks. They can’t say the word "gun," or the video gets taken down, and I won’t have anything to watch.
Red Robin: I bet you say "unalive" too
Red Robin and the others laughed, making Damian blush in embarrassment.
Robin!Damian: Damn that Ray William Johnson! He has to say those dumb words just to make those videos. I do still enjoy them though.
Red Hood: Ray William Johnson, the guy from the early 2000s?
Red Robin: He's making videos again; they're pretty good, actually.
Nightwing: The guy who did that weird online show back in the 2000s is making videos again… and he says "pew pew" for gun?
Red Robin: Yep and yep. Once you get past the words he has to say to keep YouTube videos up, it's enjoyable content. The website has gotten weirder and dumber over the years, but I like watching his videos.
Robin!Damian: Red Robin, it makes sense you are a fan, but why do you old people know about him? He’s ours!
Nightwing: What? Old?!
Red Hood: You can't claim a person as your own when we had him first! What the hell did he talk about on the show again!
Nightwing: You're not helping! We knew about him before you were even a thought!
Red Robin: You didn’t watch him, though! You knew about him and that doesn't count. You were already old, and he was dead… or working with the Al Ghuls.
Robin!Damian (siding with Red Robin, crossing his arms): Yeah... what he said.
Red Hood: I didn’t even say anything insulting!
Nightwing: And I’m not old!
Robin!Damian (pointing at Nightwing, mocking): OLD!
Nightwing (shouting angry): Stop it!
Nightwing stepped back angrily cusring.
Red Hood: We're not that old! We still had him first! And whatever he used to talk about on his show came before him saying stupid words like 'pew-pew' We had him first!
Red Robin: You did not watch him! You were busy shooting people and getting revenge!
Robin!Damian: Yeah, that's right! You were too busy being OLD!
Red Hood: You took my job!
Red Robin: We are not having this discussion again!
As the heroes and Robins argued, Batman and Oracle overheard the entire exchange. Oracle silently enjoyed the bickering while sipping her coffee. Batman's eyes widened for a few seconds as he watched the older men argue with the younger ones. He sighed, covering his eyes like the exhausted father he was.
Jim Gordon had already figured out that Batman was listening to the boys argue.
Jim: What’s it about this time?
Batman: Some guy named Ray William Johnson, and Robin called Nightwing and Red Hood old, so they’re arguing over who owns a human man!
Jim: Out of context, that’s a very weird statement. In context, this is hilarious. Who did you watch for news as a kid?
Batman: I watched the news, not a guy in his bedroom.
Jim: His content isn’t bad.
Batman: I need you to side with me right now.
Jim: It’s garbage content. There.
Jim laughed, taking a drink from his coffee. Batman was at least happy he wasn’t near his arguing sons.
