Pancakes with Concord Grape Syrup

Layered Fruit Salad (Vegan)

Ready for some delicious syrup made from grape hyacinth (muscari) flowers?! LET’S GO.

Ingredients:

1 cup grape hyacinth flowers

1 cup water

2 cups sugar

1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions:

Wash the flowers (we REALLY don’t want bugs in our syrup).

Add the flowers to a mason jar or other heat-safe container. Pour 1 cup boiling water over the flowers and let infuse for 1-2 hours (no longer or it can turn bitter!)

Strain the flowers and add the infusion to a pot along with the sugar and lemon juice.

Simmer over medium heat, until the sugar is completely dissolved.

At this point, your syrup is technically done. BUT if you want it to be thicker, you can continue simmering, stirring occasionally, until it’s to your liking.

Remove from heat and pour into a sterilized mason jar. At this point you can either 1) Store your syrup in the fridge if you plan to use it soon, or 2) Water bath can it for long term storage.

YOU DID A SYRUP! This can be used to make lemonade, mixed into cocktails, poured over ice cream. . . you do you!!

I first heard of cherry-plums from @elodieunderglass, as part of an ongoing jam competition saga (I'm rooting for you)! I second heard of them when my coworker pointed them out on a walk to the bus stop. So, naturally, I picked some. I...probably should have massed them, but I went by volume instead; it was about three cups worth.

Per the excellent advice given to me, I pitted the fruits by squeezing them, then simmered them for a bit until they were soft. Then I added sugar. About two and a half cups. Which...may have been too much. Because I definitely got syrup out of it (which was my goal!). But...it tastes like liquefied grape jelly. Or grenadine. Somewhere between the two. Beautiful color, but gotta try again when more of the bush ripens.

Cirque’s resentment toward Concavex is rooted in the fact that she is the one who enabled his rise. His ambition, though vast, is also deeply tied to his insecurity about his own abilities, although unquie on their own. He might have been a gifted composer and inkshifter, but it was Concavex’s telepathy that earned him his noble title. Though he would never admit it to her, Cirque often feels as though he owes his success to her, and that bitterness fuels his controlling behavior.

The relationship between father and daughter is one of duty rather than love. While Cirque may claim that his strictness is for her own good, Concavex sees through his guise. Prehaps, he was afraid of his own daughter. The deeper she grows into her telepathic abilities, the more she begins to understand her father’s inner turmoil, but she doesn’t know how to confront him without even more pressure. She loves him in her own way, but she cannot help feeling that her identity is being subsumed by his vision of what she should be and his fears.
