As per OP's prev tags asking for a guide to installing Revanced, I'm here to step up to the plate as someone who had an absolute bitch of a time getting it set up the first time (due to what I'll call Guide Confusion) and would like to make it easy for anyone looking to get it! So...
Welcome to Katie's Impromptu and Exhaustive Beginner's Guide to Getting Revanced (with pictures!)
(Not kidding about exhaustive btw, this got long. Brevity? Never met her)
Step 0: Preparations and Beginner Tips
So, there is a guide on Reddit, but I'm still going to write out my own version with some more explanations of the steps involved.
For example, the Reddit guide lists turning off Google Play Protect as a necessary step before doing anything else. On my phone that wasn't required, and I was able to bypass all the 'Warning! This Application May Contain Harmful Content' warnings the installs threw at me without trouble. Your phone might work like mine, or it might not let you download non-Store apps at all if Play Protect isn't disabled, and if that's the case then all you need to do to turn it off is:
1. Open the Play Store app
2. Go to your profile picture in the upper right corner
3. Find the option labeled Play Protect
4. Go to the gear icon in the upper right corner
5. There should be an option to turn off scanning apps with Play Protect
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With that, Play Protect will be deactivated. With that, I'd also like to take a quick sidebar to issue a piece of beginner advice:
Downloading non-Play Store apps is generally going to give you a scary warning about how the contents could be harmful to your device. This is at least in part to discourage you from downloading anything not approved for the app store (i.e. anything they can't/won't monetize and take a cut from) but it's not an entirely empty threat. You don't ever want to be downloading and installing things onto your phone if you don't trust the source. All the links I'll be providing in this guide are ones I've personally used to get Revanced and have had no issues with, so you can do what I did and ignore the warnings on these.
As for Revanced specifically, you don't ever want to download something that isn't specifically from the official developers of Revanced or its predecessor Vanced (RIP). The links will be on the official Revanced github and apkmirror. If you find a Revanced download somewhere else, it's wise to be skeptical, especially since Revanced isn't just one download.
But before I get into that, there're two more preparation steps listed in the Reddit guide.
The second step listed is allowing unknown downloads in your browser. This I can't say anything about, since the option to allow/disallow this doesn't appear to exist on my phone. If you need to do this, my best guess would be to go to your browser settings and look around in the Downloads tab, but if you can't find it and can't download anything in this guide, I'd search something like 'allow unknown downloads for [your phone's make and model]' to see if anyone else has the same problem.
The third and final piece of preparation, however, IS entirely necessary and required: disable or uninstall your YouTube app. The reason for this is that modded apps like Revanced work on a slightly older version of the app than is up to date. You'll be downloading a YouTube APK for this — basically a copy of YouTube that can still connect to YouTube's servers. This is also the reason Revanced randomly breaks sometimes; as YouTube constantly updates, it stops supporting older versions, and eventually the version you have Revanced with will get cut from the list and it won't be able to access YouTube's servers anymore. This takes several months to happen though, so don't worry, you won't be needing to download and patch a new YT APK every other week or anything.
But I'm getting ahead of myself.
Deleting YouTube is the best play in my opinion, since it gets it out of the way and you can always redownload it through the Play Store if needed. If you'd rather disable it, though, you can do that by:
1. Go into your phone settings
2. Select Apps
3. Select All Apps
4. Zoom to the bottom to get to YouTube, open it
5. Disable it
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once you have YouTube uninstalled or disabled, it's time to move on to the non-prep steps.
Step 1: Download Vanced MicroG
You might be wondering why that says Vanced and not Revanced. This is because Revanced is the successor to the original YouTube Vanced project, which did all the same stuff but unfortunately flew too close to the sun and started selling NFTs, which allowed YouTube to slap them with a cease and desist since they were now technically making money off their ad-less YouTube mod that was barely legal to begin with. But programs to get rid of ads are like a hydra, and cutting off one head inevitably led to many others taking Vanced's source code and making their own. When the dust settled, Revanced became the best option.
However, we still need the Vanced MicroG to make it run.
MicroG on its own is basically a free, open-source software framework that mimics Google's libraries and services. Vanced MicroG is a modified version that's specifically designed to mimic GMS (Google Mobile Services). This is what allows you to log into and use your Google/YouTube account through Revanced and have everything still work as it's supposed to.
Vanced MicroG Download:
https://github.com/TeamVanced/VancedMicroG/releases/tag/v0.2.24.220220-220220001
Ignore the source code, all you need is the microg.apk file at the top of the list.
Tumblr media
It should automatically try to install when you download it. It'll also warn you that the contents could be harmful. They aren't, so go ahead and authorize the install.
If it does not automatically install, go to your files app and navigate to downloads. If you have it sorted by most recent downloads, it'll be at the very top. Selecting it from here should give you the option to install.
And with that, you're through step one!
Step 2: Download Revanced Manager
This is what allows you to patch YouTube APKs with Revanced. It also automatically checks for updates, and tells you what the recommended version of YouTube APK is without having to go searching for individual websites or blogs for news. You can also patch YouTube Music to be ad-free with this, though you will need to download the YouTube Music APK separately.
Revanced Manager Download:
https://github.com/revanced/revanced-manager/releases/tag/v1.24.0
Once again, you want the .apk file at the very top. From here, it's the same as with the MicroG, download and let it install.
Tumblr media
Once again, if it doesn't install automatically, you should be able to find it in your downloads and activate the installation manually.
Step 3: Getting the YouTube APK
Go into your shiny new Revanced Manager. If you can't find it, scroll through your apps. It should look something like this:
Tumblr media
When you get into it, navigate to the Patcher tab and tap 'Select an app'. It should look something like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My app is actually a bit out of date, whoops. But you can see that it lists a version in there. As of the day I'm writing this, April 24th, 2025, the current recommended app version is v20.07.39. Thankfully, it is very very easy to Google 'youtube apk 20.07.39' and find exactly what we're looking for. The very first auto complete, even.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The top result there is what you want. APKMirror is a safe site that, in my experience, doesn't have any viruses in their files. Unfortunately, it does have a shit-ton of ads. Scroll past all of them until you get to a section that looks like this:
Tumblr media
The answer to which you'll need is on the right. dpi means dots per inch; basically it measures screen intensity. Some APKs are made specifically for certain dpis and dpi ranges. nodpi means the download is for all devices — while the one above it, which lists 120-640dpi, is for devices that have a dpi in that range.
Unless you know what you have is specifically within that dpi range, select the nodpi version. Scroll down until you see this and select download.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lol. Lmao, even.
Congratulations, you now have a YouTube APK! Don't install this one, though. Instead, go back to Revanced Manager and open the Patcher tab. Go ahead and select YouTube.
You might just be able to patch it immediately from there. If you get this, however:
Tumblr media
Congrats, yours works like mine does. Go ahead and select the APK from storage. Make sure you're in your Downloads folder, not just your recents, as it may not show up there. It should look something like this:
Tumblr media
Go ahead and select it. It should immediately bring up this screen:
Tumblr media
There's a ton of quality of life stuff Revanced does aside from removing ads, like returning the dislike button. You can technically go in and select what you do and don't want in the patch, but unless you really know what you're doing, I'd advise sticking with the default settings. If it adds something you really hate, you can always repatch the APK and try again.
It can take anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes to finish patching the YouTube APK, so be patient. Once it's done, though, well... it's done! You're done! You've got Revanced! No more ads for you, and you can do background listening or picture-in-picture while you're in other apps! Enjoy!
P.S.
YouTube Music works the same way, so if you want that go ahead and grab the recommended version of that APK (through APKMirror). Patch that bad boy and enjoy your ad-free music.
Also, like I said before, Revanced breaks periodically. All you need to do is download the newest recommended APK version and repeat the process. Slightly annoying, but guaranteed 10000x less annoying than 2-3 unskippable ads before each video + midrolls.
Reminder that you can block most ads on Android. yes, including youtube ads.
Steps: Download Firefox -> Install uBlock Origin extension.
That's literally it. Enjoy ad free web browsing while we still (barely) have it!

Holy shit
I just started watching a video on the youtube app, for the first time in over a year. And I was so pissed off about the ads, that within 20 minutes of opening the app, I found a guide on Reddit. Downloaded three apps. Then got the revanced version of youtube, which took me like 30 minutes to figure out how to do
I'm used to a few ads, sure. I even tolerate it. Sit through 15 seconds, twice, per 30 minute video. And the person gets paid: I'm cool with that. But I started a 15 minute video, and got 2 unskippable ads to start with, then 3 minutes in, I got another 2 ads. And that's intolerable.
I pirate apps, download APKs, install app managers to get content in games I've already paid for, that I'd have to pay more for. Shit like that, on the daily. But until now, revanced has just been too much of a pain in the ass to be worth it in my mind. But same as Firefox before it. You can only deal with so much shit, before you're willing to put in a few hours, watch a few tutorials, and change your daily use of the Internet.
And thusly I have.
Fuck YouTube, fuck Google, long live APK patches and browser plugins for simultaneous quality of life, and ad free use of the Internet.

You can now get an Ad-Free, Tumblr-Live-Free version of the Tumblr Android app
I've been writing some Patches for the Tumblr app in the ReVanced framework, and they just got released in the ReVanced patches Pack, so you can install them too! No computer is needed, and everything is open source, meaning anyone can look at the code and verify that it's not malicious.
Patches
Disable Dashboard Ads (Currently not perfect - doesn't block blazed and doesn't block Tumblr's own "Sponsored" posts that aren't real ads, like the ones that are just a cat sitting in front of a Tumblr logo)
Disable Tumblr Live (Fully and forever!)
Disable "Enable notifications when this person posts" popup
Disable "You can send gifts to people" bubble
Disable the update checker (Tumblr annoys you to update if you're on an old version, who knew?)
Maybe more to come. Please suggest new ones!
Installation
I'm not good at writing beginner-friendly guides, so this one might be hard to understand if you're not a somewhat experienced user - there's already a bunch of guides for ReVanced, and they have a support discord where you can ask for help. I encourage anyone to write a better guide for this.
First we need to download and install the ReVanced Manager. You can get it here: https://revanced.app/ Just download and install the APK.
Just like with any android app download that doesn't use the Google play store (or similar stores), you'll get some warnings that the file could be dangerous (since it's an app installer package), and you'll likely have to give your browser or File explorer permissions to install apps.
Next, we'll need a Tumblr APK to patch it. We usually can't use your already installed Tumblr since it's a Split-APK, and ReVanced doesn't really support those. Get one from APKMirror (preferred) or alternatively from APKPure (often doesn't have all app versions). Make sure you're selecting the download to a normal APK, not a Split-APK/XAPK. Also probably don't download a version that has alpha or beta in the name.
If you downloaded the Tumblr apk, don't install it. Open the ReVanced Manager we installed earlier, click Patcher->Select an Application->Storage (bottom right)->Pick the Tumblr APK you just downloaded.
Now you can de-select patches if you want, but the default is fine, it includes all patches made for Tumblr. Then click Patch in the bottom right and wait for it to finish. Before you install the patched Tumblr, you'll have to uninstall the old Tumblr since they have the same package name but our patched one isn't signed by the Google Play Store. So uninstall the Tumblr app now (and probably save/reblog this post if you're on your phone right now so you don't lose it), then switch back to the Manager and click Install to install the patched app.
Yay, now you have patched Tumblr. Everything should work as normal otherwise. If you're reading this in the (far) future and Tumblr ever updated the app and broke the patches and no one updated them to work with newer versions, you can use an old Tumblr APK and it should keep working forever. Right now, I am using v31.5.0.110 and everything is working fine.
Tell me (asks/dms/rbs) if anything is broken or you have more ideas for patches I could add. I have like 10 followers so no one is gonna see this without reblogs. Oki bye!

How to Steal Youtube like your Dad Stole Cable: A non-comprehensive guide.
Piracy is cool and you should do it.
I mean it, I fully condone the theft of copyrighted material online for the masses. You should consider the relative prices of a sturdy VPN to the cost of all your monthly streaming subscriptions and see what I mean: The mere fact that so many of these services trade the same movies back and forth on a bi-monthly basis only proves one thing, They don't respect you or your hard earned money. The prices go up, the services offered get more narrow and ill-defined, and worse to boot, but the torrent sites still exist and they still have everything I could ever want.
There are other guides on how to get any movie or album you want online, and maybe I'll write another, but today I want to talk you through something different. Piracy for the modern age, stealing something that would make the eyes of any tin-foil antenna wielding cable pirate misty with pride.
Let's get around youtube's bullshit under the jump:
We're going for the big dog. We're going… for youtube premium. I'm writing this guide with Firefox and Android in mind, but as far as I'm aware this will work more or less on chromium based browsers as well.
The two web extensions you'll need for your desktop:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/sponsorblock/
If you're like me and find yourself in a youtube death spiral more often than you wish, you might want this one too:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/hide-youtube-shorts/
Now, we address the app on your phone. Real heads have known about this trick for years, but it recently came to my attention.
ReVanced is a revival of the original Vanced app modding tool, and what it lets us do is very simple: bypass restrictions in many of our favorite apps like youtube, duolingo and others, so that we can get back essential features that have been paywalled. Specifically for youtube, we can now access off-screen playback, windowed playback, ad-free viewing, and we even GAIN a feature for our trouble, sponsor block, which uses crowdsourced data to find and skip embedded sponsor spots in videos. Think Squarespace and raid:shadow legends.
When you're installing revanced, you need to be careful not to install a pre-made hacked .apk, you really need to apply them yourself because nefarious users are everywhere and WILL send you malware. The ReVanced Manager app makes it very easy anyway, so you shouldn't need to rely on pre-hacked apks anyway.
You can get revanced from their page. Make sure it's the real deal, because there ARE fakes around.
You can find a current or slightly out-of-date youtube app around online very easily if you search. A slightly out of date apk is preferable here, as it means more of the hacks will work out of the box. If you've already downloaded the ReVanced app, then it will suggest a version for you to download.
"What about my TV?!" I haven't done this one personally, though I do intend to soon. My understanding is that you can use the command line on your fireTV stick to download a hacked app there as well! It's not an Enter The Matrix-tier operation, you just have to type a couple lines into a console. Super simple!
"Why aren't there more links in this post?" The companies have the internet too, and you probably know how to use it a bit more than they do. Posting links is like handing info to the enemy.

Youtube Mobile: Youtube Vanced/Revanced Manager
Twitter: Minimal Theme extension
Tumblr: xKit/xKit Rewritten, Dashboard Unfucker, Stylus with "Old Tumblr Dashboard" userstyle
Spotify: xManager (desktop & mobile)
Firefox: High chance you'll love it and curse holding out for so long.
Linux: No whiney search box trying to Edge you, no ads in the start menu, no trending searches reminding you about celebrity gossip & politics.
i would move heaven and earth to avoid hearing one single advertisement

Note
about that ad block post you reblogged:
- pihole is super cool, but can be annoying to setup for most people as it requires a device that is always on, such as a raspberry pi or a spare pc/laptop
- ublock origin is the best ad blocking browser extension and if you want to block ads you should have it installed. it won't block all the same things that pihole would (e.g. requests from your TV) but it would block all ads in your browser
- if you have an android smart tv you can install smarttubetv app to watch youtube without ads
- if you're on android you can use revanced manager to patch youtube(and also tumblr!) to remove ads, probs best to look up guides on reddit, google will give you a bunch of fake websites otherwise
Thanks for the info!

the tutorial is markdown formatted, even though tumblr doesnt use markdown. sorry! it wasnt ment for this site, and the only changes i made were updating information. i wanted to be quick about it.
eta: this may not work on all devices. if it aborts, sorry. try revanced builder. its more difficult to use, but seems to work even when the manager fails. i dont have a gide for it yet, but the link has instructions.
this is a sequel to my general adblocking guide for android

hello stranger
the install option in revanced manager seems to be broken, you'll need to export the patched apk (click on the save button) and install it manually. also you don't need microg unless you log in via your google account
maybe you could add that to your step-by-step tutorial? i'd make my own post but more people would see it on your blog i think
(i'd like to add that i am very normal about transformers. hopefully that means i'm living up to your moral standards)
thank you! the first issue seems to appear on a case by case basis, I've had it happen with the YouTube patch and reinstalling manager seemed to work.
As for MicroG, I wasn't able to install the Tumblr patch without it, but after some testing, it also seems to be a faulty cache or something.
I'd add the info to the post as you mentioned, but I highly doubt people would see it. The guide is already in circulation, so unless some large blog reblogs it, it would just get lost.

adding on to this to say that android fuckery doesn't require root, if you sorta trust adguard, or don't care if they know what websites you visit. they run public DNS servers accessible from anywhere, and you can go to settings -> network and Internet -> private DNS and set it to dns.adguard-dns.com .
you can also use Tubular instead of YouTube revanced:
I install/update it using Obtainium:
also adding that the *arr stack is 1) a fucking pain and 2) there's better options, IMO. this is a rough guide for getting a smart TV set up with stremio. you can search, click, watch immediately, and you don't have to wait for the download to complete.
also also adding my lists to add to ublock origin:

genuinely wild to me when I go to someone's house and we watch TV or listen to music or something and there are ads. I haven't seen an ad in my home since 2005. what do you mean you haven't set up multiple layers of digital infrastructure to banish corporate messaging to oblivion before it manifests? listen, this is important. this is the 21st century version of carving sigils on the wall to deny entry to demons or wearing bells to ward off the Unseelie. come on give me your router admin password and I'll show you how to cast a protective spell of Get Thee Tae Fuck, Capital

Thank you a lot for the last answer! Sorry to bother again, but where do I find those settings? I have downloaded revanced and checked the official reddit guide, but they seem to be of no help and the tumblr updates keep getting worse :(
Assuming you know how to install a non-root patch, the manager should give you the choice of either manually selecting which patches to use, or downloading all available. It seems there are only those 5 available, so select the latter option.

guide to ad-free youtube for mobile via. youtube revanced
since youtube vance is no longer maintained and youtube is cracking down on adblockers here is how to download youtube revanced which has the best options for customising youtube features; including removing youtube shorts popups, sponsorship segments in videos, hiding unused buttons, bringing back dislikes, and more! [official revanced github]
this guide is for android only. sorry apple users idk how to help you. your device doesn't have to be rooted. even if it is, you should still be able to follow this guide. if you have youtube vanced installed, revanced shouldn't clash, so you don't have to uninstall it if you don't want to.
installation guide:
1. download all 3:
i. microg (this will let you log into your youtube account) [apk mirror] (scroll past description, download the latest one)
ii. revanced manager apk [github] (select the latest release, scroll to the bottom in assets, install the .apk file)
iii. latest youtube apk [apk mirror]
2. open revanced manager
3. select in this order: "patcher" -> "select an application" -> "storage" (note: if your phone asks you to let the app have storage access, say yes)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[id. two screenshots of the revanced manager app. there are red markings drawn overtop, indicating areas to select mentioned in step 3. the three spots are circled by a red square, an arrow pointing towards it, and a circle with a marked number to indicate the order at the end of each arrow. id end.]
4. select the youtube apk you downloaded
5. select patches. you can tap "recommended" or "default" or turn on/off patches you want
6. once you have selected, select: "done" -> "patch"
7. wait as it intialises youtube revanced. when it's done select "install" (note: if your phone gives you a warning that the app is blocked, select: "more details" -> "install anyway")
8. if this worked, you should have youtube revanced installed, and you can log in like normal. if this didn't work, read the next part.
(under the read more are troubleshooting solutions + other alternative apps)
issue a) if the botom right now says "open"
1. select: 3 dots on the top right -> "export apk"
2. save it
3. open whatever file browsing app you use (most phones should have a default one that comes pre-installed called something like "files" or "my files". if you don't have one, you can go to the play store and search "files" and pick one. if you aren't sure, i use "files by google")
4. find the exported file and install it (it will be called something like "youtube-revanced-versionnumber.apk")
5. if this worked, you should have youtube revanced installed, and you can log in like normal. if this didn't work, you can read the next part.
issue b) can't build or install youtube revanced with no option to export
1. something may have gone wrong with the file installation at some point, so try a clean start. to do this, uninstall:
i. revanced manager
ii. youtube revanced
iii. microg
iv. (optional) disable/uninstall the default youtube app
2. follow guide from step 1 again, hopefully it works. if it's still not working, you can try other alternatives. i've listed some in the next part of this post
alternatives:
libretube, newpipe, songtube, vuetube, astron, puretuber
i haven't used any of these personally, but i haven't seen any problems with them. let me know if there are and i'll remove it from the list.
you can also use youtube through your web browser with adblock add-ons. i'm not sure whether youtube has affected their mobile site though. with the firefox app you can use ublock origins (for ads) + youtube high definition (for general quality fixes)

Youtube vanced finally stopped working for me this morning T_T
I insantly went searching for a replacement and found ReVanced was a thing \o/ It's apparently a little buggy but getting better with each version. It's working fine for me so far. No adverts and it even lets you hide the youtube shorts button so that's nice :D
Took about 5 mins to get it installed using this install guide

Adding a quick guide in case people are confused:
1, get Vanced MicroG & ReVanced Manager, install both. Guides on the official /revanced subreddit if you need help
2, Go to the Manager app once installed, then Settings > About, it should say arm64-v8a. It means the device and app are mutually compatible
3, Get a Tumblr apk. Do not install, just download it
4, Through RV Manager, go to Patcher > Select an Application > Storage, find the .apk file and click on it.
5, A progress screen will show up, at the end of which you'll be asked to allow Tumblr to install. This is the patched version.

Good news, the ReVanced project (of YouTube ReVanced fame) has added Tumblr patches to their arsenal, so not only can you patch YouTube with it now, but also Tumblr (and more, even). This can let you remove ads from the Tumblr app, and even nuke Tumblr Live.
Grab the ReVanced Manager and give it a shot. Android only, sorry.

Ive used the ReVanced project stuff for upwards of a year now. The manager gives you a list of every modded app it can install on your phone. The biggest ones I use being YTRX (Youtube ReVanced Extended, it has some features like sponsorblock and autoskipping certain video sections), and Tumblr. Some stuff like notification requests and advertising specific tumblr stuff (like the "hey stop using an ad blocker) thing gets through but I havent seen an actual AD in months.
For the whole thing you need: - Vanced Manager (this lets you update revanced apps) - microG Settings (this hooks into every revanced app to let them update/bypass certain things like google play) Here's the link to the GitHub for the manager, it SHOULD let you download the MicroG Settings through it but if not here's a link to that as well. IMPORTANT NOTE: ALL OF THIS IS ANDROID ONLY
Vanced Manager MicroG Settings
Do all of this on your phone, there are plenty of guides for it on places like reddit (ew I know) but otherwise its pretty intuitive. You install eeeeeverything through the manager. Good luck and happy ad blocking!
Is there like, an alternative tumblr apk or something autoplaying ads is really the last fucking straw

I used the official revanced app and then I followed their guide BUT! you can't use the most recent tumblr versions, which I also got from this reddit guide u shld also check, so when you search for the apk versions through the revanced app, go on uptodown! search for older tumblr versions. the apk links will have a little XAPK or APK square next to them, and i downloaded the first APK I spotted (the reddit guide suggested version 29, but it didnt work for me, so I used version 35 that was an APK, not and XAPK), and then I downloaded it, patched it through revanced, and installed it through revanced. Excellent.
